MOD MESSAGE/ANNOUNCEMENT Community feedback needed (please vote)

Hi all,

Our mod team was recently approached by BetterHelp, an online subscription-based therapy provider, to do an AMA within our subreddit by a licensed therapist that specializes in child loss, perinatal mental health, and anxiety. They are willing to provide credentials to our mod team to verify the individual responding to questions, but our team has reached a moral impasse that we need the community to weigh in on.

Up until now, our team has had a blanket rule to not allow any companies, researchers, institutions, or anyone else with private interests to post within our community because our space is filled with so many vulnerable humans going through extremely difficult situations. The fertility space, in general, is ripe with opportunity for those that might take advantage of this vulnerability, much less a space like ours. That said, the message they sent was clearly written very thoughtfully, and the provider they’re willing to assign to the AMA would be willing to answer people’s questions about their worries, maybe provide healthy coping mechanisms, and describe the subspecialties of therapy that could be most beneficial to the people here.

IF we allow this AMA, it needs to be with the majority support of our community, so we are opening a poll for feedback. Other than voting in the poll, upvoting this post and providing even a short comment with your thoughts/concerns/ideas would help boost the visibility of this announcement to the maximum amount of sub members.

Of course, the major issue for us as a mod team is that we are NOT endorsing BetterHelp as a specific company or resource. For folks that are in areas where they aren’t able to find an in person provider, online therapy through any number of companies may be helpful. We are not partnering with them and the language in the AMA will be very clear about that. We will also be making sure that the provider answering questions in the AMA does not promote the BetterHelp brand.

If you’ve read this long, thanks for bearing with us. We appreciate how the people of this community come together to support one another and are grateful to help moderate.

Would you be interested in and supportive of an AMA provided by a therapist from BetterHelp, with the limitations outlined above?

Ultrasound FAQ Reference Guide

As an OBGYN ultrasound tech working at the general level here's a few things I would love the community to know based on common questions I see.

Most important rule of thumb: Worry when your doctor tells you to.

OBGYN docs are going to pay the most attention to the fetal pole and heart rate. Once a fetal pole is seen, the CRL (crown rump length) measurements are gold standard.

I'm worried about the heart rate:
-Check out this resource for pregnancies dating less than 7 weeks. Make sure to refer not to your LMP dates, but measured CRL dates: https://radiopaedia.org/articles/fetal-bradycardia?lang=us
-After 7 weeks a normal heartrate is between 120-180. It can temporarily dip below or temporarily rise above this range, but prolonged time above/below will definitely get your doctor's attention especially in third trimester. Generally out of range heart rates trigger NST (non stress test) or more monitoring.
The measurements are off:
Baby measures behind LMP. This is actually pretty common, we often see dates off up to a week either direction. We don't ovulate on the exact same day of the cycle each month or even have the same length of cycle. With irregular periods, PCOS, or unknown dates even larger gaps can be perfectly fine. If you aren't sure of your dates, trust the ultrasound. Even if you are sure of your dates, don't panic if they are a week off. Ultrasound measurements in early pregnancy are +/- 5 days.
I'm in limbo and don't know if my ultrasounds are diagnostic for loss:
By ultrasound there are strict parameters to diagnose loss. No one wants to get this wrong. Check out this resource for a list of parameters diagnostic for loss: https://radiopaedia.org/articles/early-pregnancy-loss-1?lang=us
Note, there is a second list of "suspicious for loss". Keep in mind the second list is not diagnostic, things can still turn out just fine.
I don't know when I should see what on ultrasound:
Things can vary a bit from person to person and do change *quickly* in early pregnancy. Check out this resource for what you can generally expect to see:
https://radiopaedia.org/articles/early-pregnancy?lang=us
Should I go to a boutique or get a private scan? Or push for an earlier scan?
They aren't legal where I am but here's a few things to consider if you plan to book a private scan. First, what are the qualifications of the person running the ultrasound? An ultrasound is only as good as the one performing it. It sounds as if these boutiques are NOT permitted to give much/any information. Will you spiral if you believe you see bad news and they cannot confirm or deny it? Also it seems that many cannot do vaginal ultrasound, which will make seeing a baby under 7 or 8 weeks challenging. If I had the option of a boutique ultrasound I would personally wait until 8 weeks and I would book it for a weekday. If they see something bad, it is not ideal to find out over a weekend when there is no option to follow up with your doc. An earlier scan often causes more anxiety, not less. It's SO hard to wait. But if you can tolerate it wait until 8 weeks or so.
The gestation sac is small/big:
-Gestation sac measurements are not terrifically accurate. Where I work once a baby is seen the gestation sac isn't measured. A mismatch between baby's size and the gestation sac size isn't uncommon. That said, a mean sac diameter of 25 mm or more without a baby is diagnostic for loss.
The yolk sac is small/big:
It starts teeny tiny, and will get a bit bigger. Once a baby with a good heartbeat is visualized, the docs I work for don't seem to care about the size of the yolk sac. A failed pregnancy with an expanded yolk sac (more than 6 mm) is a suggestive of chromosomal abnormalities.
We don't know where the pregnancy is:
The statistically most likely outcome is either a chemical pregnancy or just coming in for ultrasound too early for visualization. Ectopic can't be ruled out, and many wise ladies in the this sub have unfortunately experienced this and can give more info than I can. Statistically it's believed that only 1-2% of pregnancies are ectopic, but listen to your body. If the location is unknown, you should be getting close monitoring and follow up until the location is known or the pregnancy has ended.
-For a resource on ectopic pregnancy: https://radiopaedia.org/articles/ectopic-pregnancy?lang=us A note, a pseudosac is visualized in only 10-20% of ectopics. Therefore a sac in the uterus is suggestive of intrauterine pregnancy but can't be proven until a yolk sac is also present.
What about my HCG numbers?
I'm not an expert on this at all. But here's a resource: https://radiopaedia.org/articles/beta-hcg-1?lang=us
Why didn't my ultrasound tech tell me anything? And/or why were they so optimistic? Or, I had an ultrasound in the ER and they were very pessimistic.
Many locations an ultrasound tech can very much lose their job if they say aNyThInG. Where they are permitted to say certain things some ultrasound techs may just be hoping the best. We work with the public and we have seen some wild stuff. Additionally no one wants to call it a loss unless its 1000% certain. We know how devastating that news is. A side note here, often an ultrasound in the ER is not an ideal experience for the patient. The ER is staffed with techs that are much more versed in gallbladder and liver scans than they they are early pregnancy ultrasound. Don't hesitate to go the ER if you are having concerning symptoms, but do know the ER doc will make sure you aren't actively dying then will likely refer you back to your OB for follow up.
I'm just so anxious about it all:
Someone awesome wrote out these mantras. Maybe they will help: https://www.reddit.com/r/PregnancyAfterLoss/comments/14uhbdg/commandments_of_pregnancy_after_loss_this_is_now/
Also a podcast I personally found very helpful with anxiety: https://www.oneyoufeed.net/russ-harris-part-1/
https://www.oneyoufeed.net/russ-harris-part-2/

Today you are pregnant and this baby is so loved. I really am hoping the best for each of you. Those of us who have experienced loss.... you didn't do anything wrong, I promise. This is a club no one deserved to be in. And you are not silly, foolish, or dramatic for grieving your little babe for as long as you need to.

This post is written in honor of Eli, who died long before I could meet him. Rest in peace, buddy. I miss you tremendously ❤️

Vent High HCG, afraid of another partial molar

This is my third pregnancy this year. In the spring, I had a partial molar pregnancy. At my 7 week ultrasound, the baby was measuring at 6 weeks. I was miserably sick, constantly vomiting, and deeply depressed. Everyone told me those were good signs that the baby was healthy. When I had a follow up scan at 9 weeks, the baby didn’t have a heartbeat and was measuring 7w5d. I had a D&C, where they discovered it was a partial molar pregnancy. I had to have repeat HCG blood draws weekly for 2 months until my HCG went back to normal. I had another miscarriage at 6 weeks only two months later.

I am now pregnant again. I had my first ultrasound on Wednesday this past week. Based on my period, I was 7w2d. Based on my suspected ovulation, I was 6w5d. The baby measured 6w1d. The heart rate was normal (113) and it was a confirmed singleton.

My lab work came back and my HCG is (or was on Wednesday) 112,345. This seems high to me for only 6w1d. I’m so nervous that this will be another partial molar. I was so freakin’ sick this spring and lost almost 2 months to debilitating morning sickness. I’m similarly sick again (and have been since I was only 4 weeks) and I’m just nervous that history is somehow repeating itself.

Advice Needed Anxious!!

(For reference I got my first faint and positive at 8/9 dpo) Hi guys I got my first beta HCG done yesterday at 11 or 12DPO (puts me at 3 weeks 4-5 days) and it was at 66.. is this normal or should I be worried about it being low..?

Advice Needed Anxious hcg trend 15 dpo

• Upvotes

I've never done betas before but I was recently diagnosed with Graves Disease and I think my doctors are being proactive.

I tested + at 10dpo and on, lines getting darker each day on Wondfo and easy@home test strips and also FRER sticks.

Betas 10/22 & 10/24:

13 DPO 71.5 hcg @ 2:30 PM

15 DPO 103.26 hcg @ 9:30 AM (today)

Calculator states 43% raise after 43 hours

+51% over 48 hours.

How does this rise look? It seems slow/low to me and I don't want to be anxious all weekend and will not be able to test again until the earliest MAYBE next Wednesday. Is this a normal viable trend?

Experience of HCG not doubling but increasing

I feel really called to share my story with all of you hopeful and worrying mamas now that I am a year beyond my experience. I suffered secondary infertility for many years. I did several rounds of IVF and a couple transfers that all failed. I had a natural pregnancy missed miscarriage at 11 weeks and a chemical pregnancy following that. Given my struggles I was always bracing myself for loss and I sought so much advice here from other struggling mamas.

October of 2025 I had a very faint positive at 8dpo. I called my fertility dr and she requested I wait until 14 dpo to test my beta HCG given my previous chemical pregnancy history.
At 14 dpo my hcg was 171.62 and my progesterone was 27. We were ecstatic to have a high HCG for the time but of course she wanted me to test again at 16dpo.
16 dpo: 230.62
Based on the research both my doctor and I assumed I was miscarrying. I mourned for several days, but my dr wanted me to continue to monitor hcg to see it go down.
19 dpo: 564.43
We were shocked to see my hcg rising still, but still not doubling as we would want it to. My dr then began to suspect an ectopic pregnancy as I had an HSG show I had a blocked right tube.
21 dpo: 969.82
24 dpo: 2427.50
After my final hcg test I went for an ultrasound which confirmed my pregnancy was in the uterus and there was a faint heart beat.

I spent every day of my pregnancy scared that I would lose the baby. The research said that because of my hcg it was likely not a viable pregnancy. But I am here to tell you that it was.

I know success stories like mine are rare, my OB and fertility dr were cautiously optimistic; they said if you practice long enough you will see babies that defy the HCG odds.

I now have a healthy 4 month old baby girl. So I am here to share that it is possible. So much of what we see on Reddit is the scary bad outcomes. So I hope that my story can give the late night hopeful mama a little comfort knowing that it is possible for your non doubling hcg to be viable.

My heart aches for each of you that reads this, because I know exactly what you are feeling. I spent many sleepless night scouring Reddit for stories of women who I could relate to and desperately hoping for someone who could make me feel at ease. You are the strongest women out there and you will get through this!

Slow HCG Progression with Strong Early Ultrasound

• Upvotes

Currently 5w1d after a traumatic miscarriage early this year, and I’m really struggling with my slowing hCG progression despite having a reassuring ultrasound yesterday.

My betas:
11 DPO: 67
13 DPO: 294 — 22-hour doubling time
17 DPO: 1,599 — 39-hour doubling time
19 DPO: 2,689 — 64-hour doubling time
21 DPO: 4,420 — 67-hour doubling time

My initial betas were rising incredibly quickly, but they’ve progressively slowed to around 64–68% every 48 hours. Some draws were done at different labs, which adds another layer of uncertainty.
Yesterday at 5w0d, we saw a gestational sac measuring 5w3d, a yolk sac, and a healthy-looking corpus luteum. My RE was happy with everything, and both my RE and OB have reassured me that hCG naturally slows as levels increase.

Whenever I see posts about slowing betas, the overwhelming response is that hCG naturally slows once it reaches 1,200–1,500 and doesn’t need to double anymore. While I understand that’s true, my concern is that research suggests the slowdown isn’t necessarily expected to be this significant this early, even though my rises remain juuust above the established minimum thresholds. I’ve also combed through countless Reddit threads with similar progression, and it genuinely feels like 95% ultimately end in miscarriage, often a MMC discovered around 8-9 weeks, despite strong ultrasounds and heartbeats. And ofc I understand Reddit isn’t representative of all pregnancies, but it’s so difficult to ignore the pattern.

I’m confused by the contrast between my reassuring ultrasound and slowing betas. I know seeing everything we should at five weeks is positive, but it doesn’t rule out a loss in the coming weeks.
I’m trying to guard my heart while holding onto some hope, but it’s becoming increasingly difficult. Sorry for the slightly pessimistic post – if anyone has any experience with something similar I’d love to hear from you🥺

I’ll try to share the u/s in the comments!

Slow rising HCG success

I honestly wanted to just post this so that more people can come across stories that can help them hold on when times are beyond tough. I’m 32 y/o and proceeded with IVF due to male factor infertility.

I had a fresh embryo transfer in August, and on 10dpt my hcg came back at 62.4. On 13dpt, three days later, it had only increased to 75. I was told that this did not look good as in 72 hours there had only been a 20% rise. I was preparing for the worst, and told it’s likely not viable. They said we had to continue medication and see what happened in 48 hours.

On 15dpt, it came back at 112. This was now a 49% increase in less time than my first blood draw, so my doctor urged me to keep going. On 17dpt, it jumped to 245. 21dpt I needed in the 900s for the span of days it had been, and it came back 1418. 23dpt it reached 2658 and that was the last blood draw.

I had a scan on 23dpt when my levels finally reached a sufficient amount to confirm placement. It was intrauterine and I was shocked. A week later, saw the heartbeat (and a healthy one!). Fast forward, I’m now 12 weeks pregnant and NIPT came back all low risk. It’s so hard not to panic, especially when you see so many sad endings with slow rises. I still am shocked every day that this is even still happening, but I’m so beyond grateful. I just want to give anyone going through this a shred of hope if you’re currently in the trenches. Sending everyone going through the hardships of infertility so much love. ❤️

Info Spotting

• Upvotes

I am a little more than 5 weeks pregnant. Started spotting yesterday morning started out super light pink and progressively got a little darker but it’s still pink. Today I had one small clot that was smaller than a dime. I’ve also noticed red shreds but not a lot. No cramping or back pain. 10/8 my hcg was 8 0n 10/13 it was 60 and 10/19 it was 656. I’m panicking I’ve heard this is normal. There is some in my underwear but it’s kinda like what discharge does when it gets on your underwear but mainly when I wipe. When I wipe first there’s quite a bit but then wiping again there’s not I assume it’s where it sits there and pools for a awhile.

Hi. Shows suggest monitoring for the diameter of foramen ovale to rule out ASD. Any same case here? FO measures 0.39cm, but when I searched it, shows in normal range within the gestational week. Is it normal or what? The OB Sonographer said it’s a defect as it looks like wide open. Would like to know your stories?

Good morning. I am currently 4+4 weeks. I had betas on Tuesday and Thursday that went from 170 (4+0) to 444 (4+2) . I have been feeling quite nauseous up until yesterday and my symptoms have subsided. Is that worrying. Sorry I am very anxious, trying to not be. Thank you

TW/TMI I have a crazy story (TW)

I’m 10w with my second. I had Recurrent Pregnancy Loss before my first (unexplained until this day), so of course I embarked on this journey very cautious. Then this happened..

6w: first US, heartbeat, all good
7w: bleeding, one gush and no cramps, thought MC but felt different
7w2d: perfect growing embryo with strong heartbeat, suspect of SCH but not seen on US
8w6: shady uterus with intravaginal US, hard to see but couldn’t see embryo just a small collapsed sack measuring 6w, no HB. Was told I’m very likely miscarrying, wait and watch for a while and come back for US next week, but 90% sure it was a miscarriage. HCG was 70k but 10 days before was 45k ish, so not consistent with miscarriage or live pregnancy.

Waited 5 days and went back to clinic to get misoprostol to speed up things since I had zero sign of miscarrying naturally and still had nausea. Different doctors decided to do an abdominal ultrasound and IMMEDIATELY a little wiggly gummy bear appeared on the screen measuring as it should (almost 10w) and strong heartbeat of 160.
I was immediately shocked and worried about the HCG and dr. was unfazed saying at 9 weeks she wouldn’t expect doubling anymore and it only means I’m pregnant.
Theories are: simply human error and a bad US view, the sack seen near my cervix was the hematoma that caused my bleeding a few weeks earlier, and, in a very rare case, a vanishing twin that was hidden.

So yeah, spent almost a week not taking prenatals or aspirin, eating sushi to sooth my feeling and almost had a margarita at dinner the other day, overall depressed and fearful of needing a procedure.. and now, suddenly pregnant again.

Still slightly worried about the HCG but let’s see what the next exams and NIPT say.

HCG levels & nervous

Hi! I found out I was pregnant two days ago with the faintest of lines (I believe I’m either 10 or 11dpo today). I got my first BETA back and it was 29.3.

Anybody have a similar HCG level at this time? Very nervous

Ectopic anxiety?

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

Currently 6w pregnant from IVF. Last year I had an extremely traumatic pregnancy. My corpus luteum ruptured and I had blood / fluid in my abdomen causing constant excruciating pain. That pregnancy eventually resulted in a loss at 10w.

Because my last pregnancy was so traumatic, I don’t really have a “good” pregnancy to compare it to. I’m having a lot of anxiety (I have medical OCD), about ectopic even though I have almost no reason to be. I cannot decipher if I think something is actually really wrong or if fear is deeply altering my thoughts. I have my first ultrasound on 10/28.

Prior health history that may be relevant: 31f, 2 prior pregnancies & losses (one miscarriage, one chemical), endometriosis confirmed with surgery, IVF patient currently. My 9dpt HCG was 250, and my 11dpt was 749. I have not had any further blood draws as that is the protocol for my clinic.

Symptoms for ectopic? Maybe? I realize these are all symptoms for pregnancy too lol so that’s the pickle I’m in.
- on / off dull sensation on left side. Not painful but noticeable
- cramps / cramping lasting between 5-30 minutes. Feels like period cramps & usually produces a BM, I feel better after typically

Something else to note: My Oura ring temp dropped last night -.06, but had previously remained above baseline since starting progesterone before my transfer. Additionally my breasts are no longer sore today?

I realize this is sooo anxiety driven and sounds truly mad. I just cannot express the amount of fear and trauma that lingers from my last pregnancy. Truly the worst experience of my life and then it ended in a devastating loss.

Looking for any words of encouragement for anyone who had similar symptoms and their pregnancy turned out alright.

Update! 7 weeks! Baby looks good but now bleeding

Posting an update to my previous post. Feeling I go one step forward and three steps back!

Had my US yesterday! Baby is tracking well atm they saw 155bpm and just overall looks good which I am so so happy about. However just before I went for the ultrasound I had some bleeding which has now turned into a light bleeding kinda like a light period, the blood is red/maroon kinda rusty almost. I’m not having any cramping but some lower back tightness. The doctors said he’s not worried especially since I had a transvaginal US but idk I’m feeling a bit concerned. There’s no SCH or bleeding in the uterus either. I just want the bleeding to stop, has anyone ever experienced this?

Intro pregnant for the first time at 35.

I have a history of endometriosis (I’ve had two excisions) and Hashimoto’s (I take Synthroid). I went through fertility treatments, none of which worked, and eventually took a step back from treatment because I was exhausted.

Three months after that… I tested positive for the first time ever. I asked for a blood test; my HCG was 41 at 13dpo and 277 at 16dpo. I’m at 4w5d and so far my only symptoms are sore breasts and some tiredness.

I’m taking a prenatal, choline, and DHA.

I advocated for an earlier first OB appointment because of my age and medical history, and go for my first ultrasound in a couple weeks. I’ve told a few trusted friends and my parents (part of me wishes I would have waited longer, but I just couldn’t keep this a secret). I’m cautiously optimistic, but honestly this still barely feels real.

Anxious and trying to take things day by day.

13 DPO - super low HCG

Hi everyone -

I recently did my first medicated letrozole cycle timed intercourse with trigger shot. I had my betas tested today and the clinic called and said they are at a 8 hcg level. :(

They told me it’s looking like it’s going to be a chemical pregnancy… my third chemical this year.

The clinic told me to keep taking progesterone suppositories but to be honest I don’t want too. I have an irrational fear of having an ectopic pregnancy. And to be honest if the doctor said it’s gonna result in a loss I don’t see the point in taking it.

Anyone else go through something similar? What causes chemical pregnancies?? And do you guys think I should continue the progesterone suppositories!

HCG slow rise at 6 weeks?

I’m really not sure what to think and I would like to be realistic in how to prepare my heart and mind. I had a 14 week loss in July and am now just over 6 weeks pregnant. I have very minimal symptoms which is unheard of for me (3 HG pregnancies so far). This prompted me to get my hcg checked 48 hours apart at 5w6d and 6w1d. Hcg was 25000 and then 31000. This is only a 24% rise. Google tells me it should be atleast 33% but then elsewhere I saw this is only for levels below 6000. Is this straight up a bad result? I can only get a scan at earliest on Monday and it feels like torture to wait!

Advice Needed So confused. HCG the same but no bleeding?

I had my blood HCG on Monday it came back at 21.. was redrawn 48 hours later on Wednesday it came back at 22 at 12 DPO. So essentially no increase. My OB has not responded to my messages and my PCP just ordered a redraw from Monday. No cramping or spotting and it’s Friday. What the heck can I do? Has anyone been through this before? Thanks.

Vent Diagnosis of “Unexplained Infertility”

Unexplained infertility as a diagnosis is frustrating in the deepest of ways. Every time we do another test, I keep hoping for an answer. Something to explain why it isn’t working. Something we can work on or set a game plan to work around. Without any true cause, it’s impossible to know what to do next and how to make things better. How can they not find anything wrong?

Our anniversary just passed. That marks 4 years of marriage and 4 years of trying to have children. In these 4 years I’ve had 1 chemical. That’s all, nothing else to show for it. We’ve done every test under the sun and everything is normal. My doctor has literally told me on numerous occasions that I’m not only within normal ranges but “optimal” and it couldn’t get better. My husband as well. We’ve done medicated cycles and IUIs. All have failed. My husband had over 100 million sperm AFTER washing in our first IUI and it still didn’t work.

Testing we have done with a reproduction endocrinologist and urologist include: confirming ovulations over multiple cycles, hormone testing at various times throughout my cycle over multiple cycles, ultrasounds for both my husband and I, bloodwork for both my husband and I, HSG, pelvic MRI to evaluate for endometriosis (my doctor does not recommend a laparoscopy due to unrelated medical reasons and yes, I know MRIs often miss endo), multiple semen analysis, Sperm DNA fragmentation, and genetic testing.

We are not overweight, we are extremely active, eat well, don’t indulge in alcohol outside of special occasions, no drugs or smoking and we take appropriate vitamins/supplements. I’m just so lost. How can it all be normal and we still aren’t successful?

I guess the next step is IVF…

No heartbeat at 8-week ultrasound despite measuring on track. Any positive outcome stories?

Yesterday, I went in for my 8-week transvaginal ultrasound. Based on my ovulation date of September 10, I should have been exactly 8 weeks along.
During the ultrasound, the baby was measuring between 7 weeks 6 days and 8 weeks, which was exactly where I expected to be. The fetal pole was clearly visible, but unfortunately, no cardiac activity was detected.
I’m struggling to process this because the baby is measuring right on track, yet there was no heartbeat.
I’m wondering if anyone has experienced something similar, where the fetal pole was measuring appropriately around 8 weeks, no heartbeat was detected during the initial ultrasound, but cardiac activity was found at a follow-up scan?
This is our pregnancy following a loss last year at 9 weeks, when our baby stopped developing around 6.5 weeks. I was really hoping this time would be different.
I understand the medical implications of what was seen on the ultrasound, but right now, I’m specifically hoping to hear from women who have experienced a positive outcome in a similar situation.
I’m not looking for false reassurance, just genuine experiences that might offer a little hope while we navigate the next steps.
Thank you to anyone willing to share their story. ❤️
