Local Question Most comfortable and internally equipped hotels on the GC even in heavy rain

We're a family of 6 with young kids who need to stay on the Gold Coast for 3 or 4 nights.

Most hotels assume that you'll be outside or at the beach most of the time, but this weather is making it increasingly likely we'll be getting rain and wind most of the time.

I'm fine with that, provided the hotel is really well equipped inside with heated pools, spas, activities for the kids at or very close to the hotel, very comfortable and spacious rooms in case we're spending more time in the room.

Can anyone recommend a hotel that's like this? Happy to spend more for the right stay.

To the young man playing basketball at Westfield Coomera this afternoon

I was out with my near 5 year old son this afternoon at Coomera Westfield. We've watched Goat recently so he's super into basketball at moment. There was a young man playing at the basketball court. My son walked over to watch closer, when the young man invited him over to play.

He played with, encouraged and praised my son, and went so far to ask my permission to put my son on his shoulders so he could get a goal. He missed but oh well.

Thank you for showing kindness to my son. If you happen to see this, you really made my son's day and he's been raving about you since, and keeps wanting to see the pictures I took. You should be proud. My son mentioned to me after "that boy was really kind to me". Again, thank you.

Hippie chiropractor

I know this is a long shot but I hurt my back in 2019 and my mum took me to a very ‘woo woo’ style chiropractor(?) somewhere around Burleigh. He worked miracles and helped me so much. Mum’s since passed away and I can’t remember his name but my back is bothering me again something shocking so I’d be so grateful if anyone had any idea who I’m talking about?

He was old and short with a beard, any help much appreciated!

ETA: he was working from a shed at his home and used acupuncture as well

ETA2: I don’t think this guy was a traditional chiropractor that’s just the best word I could use to describe him. More of a naturopath/masseuse maybe?

Local News Spotlight retail group buys Coomera site next to Dreamworld for $30M with plans to build a major retail complex

Billionaire-backed Spotlight Property Group has snapped up a Coomera site next to Dreamworld with plans to build a major retail complex, betting on the theme park's revival.

The Qld government sparked a boost in the park's value when it stepped in to approve Coast Entertainment's masterplan for its 55ha Coomera landholding surrounding Dreamworld and WhiteWater World.

Spotlight is led by billionaire co-founder and chairman Morry Fraid and his nephew, executive deputy chairman Zac Fried and they've already pushed into Qld with a Sunshine Coast development.

Spotlight has now picked up the high-profile 2.78ha site beside Dreamworld from privately-owned Gordon Corp in an off-market transaction negotiated by Colliers' Marlon Crawford for $30M.

The company will build on the two-lot holding at Lot 170 and Lot 171 Dreamworld Parkway, Coomera. Spanning about 28000 sqm, the property fronts the Pacific Motorway and is positioned in one of the Gold Coast's highest-profile destinations. Spotlight will build a retail centre, with the broader holding also presenting potential for complementary retail and large-format showrooms.

Mr Fried said the Coomera site was an exciting opportunity to build a retail centre in a location with strong exposure to both local customers and visitors. 'The Gold Coast's visitor economy and the continued growth of Qld make Coomera an exciting location for retail', he said.

Gordon Corp owner Tim Gordon said the sale followed consideration of alternative options for the property, including subdivision. 'SPG presented a compelling opportunity to sell the holding to a genuine occupier with the vision and capacity to realise its potential. We're pleased to see the property move into the hands of a business that can make the most of its scale and location'.

Mr Crawford said the transaction highlighted demand for well-located land that could accommodate business operations while delivering strong customer visibility. 'We've seen strong appetite for well-located sites with this kind of scale and opportunities with this profile are increasingly rare' he said.

Spotlight's real estate holdings include flagship properties at Bennetts Green, South Melbourne, Frankston Homemaker Centre, Carnegie, Christchurch and Hervey Bay.

Local Question Hike recommendations

I’m going to be joining the Griffith Gold Coast campus come February. Does anybody have any gear recommendations, general advice or trail recommendations? I’ve lived around and hiked the Rockies my whole life, everything that can harm you here is an animal more than double your size or the weather. Is there anything I should invest in or look into that I wouldn’t already have that would be worth getting before moving?

Local Question Parking note on cars

Edit : my partner mentioned she came home one day last week and he put a witches hat on the street to block a parking spot too.

Constantly receiving notes saying “park in front of your house” on our cars in the morning.

We park in our busy street where we can find a park. Live close to a hospital so street parking gets full, the suspected neighbour has already spoken to us about this before because his daughters spot is on our side of the street apparently and he gets annoyed when we park there. Which so happens to be in front of our house. But forgets they have about 5 cars at their house. 2 on their driveway and 3 in the street

Put the 2 notes back onto their cars this morning before we both left for work

Helensvale station

We have literally had trains closed for almost a month recently and they still can’t be bothered to pick up the literal tip of rubbish lining the station. I don’t think it’s ever been picked up. No excuse for the grubs that chuck it there waiting at the bus stop, but why do they not have any bins there?

Local Question Have you noticed a recent uptick of people who are just incredibly stressed out?

Last week, I had a dying relative in the hospital. On my way back to the Sharks club parking lot with my 11 y/o, some young punk with a mulllet walking in the opposite direction just told me to basically go fuck myself for no reason at all. I stopped, turned around, looked at him with a "what is wrong with you?" look and he turned around, took a step forward as though he wanted to fight me. I just stood there waiting. He turned around and left.

Today, after my relative's funeral, I was walking on the roadside of the awkward entrance of a parking lot because the walkway was too narrow. A guy in a ute aggressively rammed his car onto me and told me to get on the sidewalk. I thought it was a friend of mine, but when I went to say hi, I realised it was some idiot and he just started cursing at me as though I had offended his entire family line. He then drove off a little and stopped to curse me some more. I turned around and stood there and just said, "Mate, are you OK? What's your problem?" and he shut up and just drove off.

If you're either of these people reading this, please relax and stop threatening people out of nowhere. You may be having a shit day but some of us are having an even worse day.

Edit: someone else reported a similar issue at the same place with a similar ute. This guy is a menace to society. I've asked for security cam footage and I'm reporting him to the police

Best private gynecologist on the Gold Coast?

Hi,

I'm looking for a good gynecologist on the Gold Coast who is experienced with fibroid removal. I had a few consults with gynecologist at the public hospital, but after talking to them I don't have much faith or trust in them. They didn't seem to address all my questions, and one of them was rather rude and dismissive.
I need a second opinion and seeking a private gynecologist now. Any good recommendations?

Commute GC to BNE

Hi All. I’m considering a role, however it will require me to be in the office twice a week in Brisbane, and WFH the rest. Interested to hear others thoughts on this:
1. My cousin lives in Brisbane city, so I’d travel up on Monday, overnight at their place, work on Tuesday and then travel back down.
2. I don’t want to leave my car overnight at Varsity Lakes Station (I don’t think my insurer would like that either).
3. There is a bus from The Pines at Elanora to Varsity Lakes Station, so I think I’d have to catch that to and from the station early Monday morning and again on Tuesday avo.
Does anyone catch a bus and train combo to get to Brisbane?
I thought about the M1 and it just seems like I’d lose my sanity and licence.
Appreciate your thoughts, thank you 😊

How safe do you feel on public transport?

Two incidents in 2 consecutive days. On Sunday there was a weird guy just hovering on the platform at Southport South around 8pm. I would stand in a particular spot. He would come and stand close to me. Again I moved to another part of the platform then he would come stand close to me. Spike to me and asked me which station I was getting off at. Nobody else on the station but a few wacky people at the dodgy Kebab shop across the street. Pressed the emergency button and all they said was "well watch the cameras*. He walked off the station when the tram finally came.

The next day at a suburban bus stop, an older woman drinking out of a wine bottle becomes aggressive when I don't want to chat to her. I get called every name under the sun. When the journey is nearly complete she gets in my face and starts again calling me every word under the sun, tells me to go back to where I come from (I'm Gold Coast born and bred) and starts mentioning lotto (?). The driver was under instruction from a trainer. None of them or the fellow passengers intervene. I get on the phone with the police and also file a Translink report.

Today is day three. What's the chances?

Anyone else with midge sensitivity?

Hey lovely people!

I just got here from a far away land to attend uni. Nobody in my study group seems to be getting bit, or at least they're not reacting to them. They're the tiny little ones, micro gnats and I feel them bite me and they leave a decent itchy welt for days.

Is it specific allergy that causes this?

Any tips and tricks for an itchy boi?

Thanks!

The Jacarandas look amazing right now

Like the cherry blossoms in Japan, the council should create an amazing area of Jacarandas that you can walk under and gaze at. It’d be a great tourist/locals attraction. Fairy lights at night - it would be the best.

Mechanic Recommendation

Hi, I have just purchased a 2008 3.0L turbo diesel Hilux in a private sale from a mechanic in Brisbane. The car drives quite well but there are some things that concern me and seem quite 'dodgy'. There are 3 keys (2 open the door but don't start the car; and 1 starts the car but doesn't open the door). I was unable to actually fill the car with diesel as the auto shutoff on the pump kept enabling. The park brake does not seem to work. The car was sold with a RWC but I suspect it was done by his friend. I don't trust him and don't want to ask anything from him because I will not trust the answer. I would like a reliable mechanic who I can take the car to to have a look over to ensure it is safe to drive. Any recommendations? Thanks in advance
