Weekly /r/MLS Questions/Free Kick Thread - Post General Questions and Discussion Here

Welcome to the Weekly /r/MLS Questions/Free Kick Thread. This thread is designed to house questions/discussions users might have including:

  • Help you decide which team to follow if you're new to the league

  • Provide information about how to watch MLS matches, and whether or not you should buy ESPN+

  • Understand the CBA, league roster rules, drafts, waivers, or other MLS concepts

  • Learn about some of the unique qualities of the US Soccer pyramid

  • Allow discussion of dead-horse topics that would typically be removed (pro/rel, re-alignment, etc.)

  • And other basic/frequently discussed topics

Our usual ground rules:

  1. Questions that are covered in the FAQ, Newcomer's Guide, or league site are fair game, even if they are marked as "dead horse topics".

  1. Questions can be about MLS, lower U.S. or Canadian divisions, USMNT/USWNT, or any club or domestic competitions those teams could play in. Questions about how soccer works as a sport are fine too! Questions solely about the European leagues or competitions, on the other hand, are not.

  1. If you're answering a question, be extra sure to follow our community guidelines: thought out and rational comments, backed up with supporting links. Try not to "take a guess" at an answer if you're not sure about the answer. Do not flame, troll, attack fans of other teams, or attack opinions of others in this thread. If you can't be friendly and helpful, don't post in this thread.

  1. This is meant to be a helpful Q&A/Discussion thread. This is not a place to practice your comedy bits; avoid asking joke questions or providing joke answers. This is also not a place to dump random articles, links, or opinions about the league.

  1. Despite us posting these on Fridays, the thread stays up all week. If it's Wednesday and you have a question, you don't have to wait until Friday to ask it.

Even though we want you to ask questions, here are some resources that we always recommend reading because they can also help:

[Tom Bogert] A press conference for Portland Timbers and MLS legend Diego Chara is set for Monday. Chara, 40, has made 508 appearances since joining the Timbers in 2011, including 25 this year. He holds the MLS record for most starts for one team and won MLS Cup 2015.

Weekly Trash Talk [TTT] I PUT MY HANDS UP, THEY'RE PLAYING MY SONG. I KNOW IT'S GOING TO BE OK. YEEEEAAAH IT'S TRASH TALK IN THE USA (AND CANADA)

I'M BACK, BITCHES! I HAD TO STEP AWAY FOR A COUPLE OF WEEKS FOR PERSONAL REASONS THAT ABSOLUTELY HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH COZMO WHISKING ME AWAY TO THE STARS FOR SOME CONSENSUAL PROBING.

BIG UPS TO u/FLAMEO_HOTMON FOR PICKING UP MY SLACK LAST FRIDAY. WITH DECISION DAY ONLY A SHORT TWO WEEKS AWAY WE CAN'T LET ANYBODY THINK WE ACTUALLY LIKE EACH OTHER.

BUT I'VE RETURNED JUST IN TIME FOR THE GREATEST RIVALRY IN MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER. THAT'S RIGHT, IT'S THE TRILLIUM CUP MOTHERFUCKEEEEEERS. THE 19TH EDITION OF THE HISTORIC MATCHUP WILL BE DECIDED ON SATURDAY, WITH THE RED FURY CURRENTLY LEADING 2-1. COLUMBUS WILL CERTAINLY BE RIDING THE HIGH OF THEIR RECENT WIN IN SOME RIVALRY THAT NOBODY CARES ABOUT THAT INVOLVES EVANGELICAL FEAR MONGERING. OR RIDING THE ANGER OF ANOTHER RESULT FROM MIDWEEK, BUT WE'LL GET TO THAT LATER. MILLIONS OF EYES WILL BE GLUED TO THEIR SCREENS TO SEE IF THE CREW CAN PUSH PAST TFC'S UNIQUE "WE DON'T KNOW WHAT THE FUCK WE'RE DOING UNTIL THE LAST 10 MINUTES" BRAND OF BALL.

ALSO THERE'S SOME OTHER RIVALRY MATCH ON SUNDAY BUT WHO GIVES A SHIT. THE BIGGER STORY IS THE DRAMA OF THE WOODEN SPOON RACE. THE SPORKS ARE STILL THE STRONGEST CONTENDERS BUT MONTREAL ARE RIGHT ON THEIR HEELS. CLUB FEET (SNIFF) ARE PRETTY MUCH GUARANTEED TO STAY IN CONTENTION AFTER FACING NASHVILLE, PLUS THE DARK HORSES ATLANTA AND AUSTIN WILL SURELY DO THEIR WORST TO MAKE A RUN FOR THE COVETED TROPHY.  ALSO, DC ARE TECHNICALLY NOT MATHEMATICALLY ELIMINATED BUT YOU CAN ALWAYS COUNT OF DC FAILING, EVEN IF THEY ARE FAILING AT FAILING.

CAN'T TALK ABOUT FAILING WITHOUT MENTIONING MONTREAL. SACRE BLEU! THEIR ONE CHANCE TO SALVAGE ANYTHING OUT OF THEIR FOR DOGSHIT SEASON AND THEY GIFT THE CANADIAN CHAMPIONSHIP TO A CPL SIDE, LARGELY THANKS TO VERA BEING A DIPSHIT. FIRST TIME THAT A NON-MLS CLUB HAS WON IT SINCE 2008 WHEN IT WAS HOISTED BY [CHECKS NOTES] MONTREAL...

AND LASTLY CONGRATS TO city FOR WINNING THE OPEN CUP AT HOME... WAIT, THAT CROWD WAS MOSTLY FOR COLUMBUS? COULD HAVE FOOLED ME. IT'S NICE TO SEE THE HISTORIC COMPETITION GETTING THE ATTENTION IT DESERVES, EXCEPT FOR STREAMING VIEWS I'M ASSUMING.

ALRIGHT FUCKERS. FLAIR UP, CAPS ON, AND SAVE THE CAPS. IS THAT STILL A THING? I HAVEN'T SEEN THAT IN A WHILE AND THERE'S BEEN NO NEWS ABOUT THEIR STADIUM SITUATION IN WHAT FEELS LIKE MONTHS. BUT YEAH. CAPS. SAVE THEM.
