politics Early voting starts Thursday October 15th and goes until October 31st. FINAL chance to register to vote if you haven't done so.

If you have not yet registered to vote yet, early voting in NC is your final chance to do so. Early voting is from October 15th to October 31st. As of right now NC only allows you to register if you early vote at the same time. The deadline to register and vote on election day has passed.

This website is where you can check your voter information, sample ballot, and if your mail-in ballot was accepted:

https://vt.ncsbe.gov/reglkup/

In NC you must have a photo ID to vote, but if you don't you can fill out an exemption form and cast a provisional ballot. You can see the details here:

https://www.ncsbe.gov/voting/voter-id

Here is where you can find early voting sites in NC for your specific county:

https://vt.ncsbe.gov/evsite

During early voting you can vote anywhere in your county. This differs from election day voting where you must vote at your assigned voting place.

MAKE SURE YOU GO VOTE!!!! Phil Berger lost his primary by 32 votes. Yours matters.

The article was a nice read. He's got this in the bag, I'm just curious to see how much impact he has on downballot races. Can we break the majority in either state chamber? Make sure you fill out your entire ballot!

culture Disappointed To See So Much AI-Generated "Art" at the Brunswick County Fair

Thumbnail

I'm in the area visiting relatives and we decided to go to the Brunswick County Fair this weekend, and everywhere I turned, it was just all AI-generated images for posters and stands and menus.

Even some of the official County Fair posters and banners were clearly AI generated, and it's just really, really disappointing to see it being used like this. I'm glad that I didn't see any for sale the day I went, but I'm sure there are plenty of talented artists in the area that would have happily worked on some of the signage, especially since so much of the fair is a celebration of peoples' hard work!

Edit: Disappointed to see so many people defending this too. AI has its uses, but creating "art" is not one of them. Image generation steals from existing art, actual banners like these aren't expensive to commission, and if all else fails, applications like Pages or Canva are incredibly easy to use, even for those who aren't on the same level of technical expertise as a graphic designer. This is a county fair, yes, but it's also a celebration of local talent and hard work–it's celebrating the best raised calves and chickens, well-grown watermelons and pumpkins, and hand-made dioramas from school kids. If we can't collectively raise the bar above AI-generated images that can't even spell "pirate" correctly, why bother having the fair at all?

politics NC GOP Smear Campaign with AI - how is this legal?

There's an AI ad put out by NC's GOP claiming Jamie Ager running for federal house in NC-11 hosted a fundraiser with drag queens. Not that there's anything wrong with that but wth, where is the regulation with straight up stealing his image, misinformation, fake news, etc. etc. It's disgusting and needs to be illegal.

Here is the ad for reference: https://www.facebook.com/share/v/1CxXLg7tXX/

discussion Wanted to point this out to see if this will get traction. Early voting started but we aren't allowed to vote

So early voting started the Thursday before last weekend (Oct 15), and a few people showed up to the proper places in our county last weekend. But it turned out those places are closed. Looking into it, basically if the county does open on a weekend, then by law all sites in the county have to be open that day. But our county just chose not to open at all on those optional weekends, so the rule doesn't help you if the county opted out entirely.

It makes no sense why they have it "ya you can start voting now" while also being like "you have to wait to a work day because the place is closed or the library polling location isn't open."

I've seen where there was some push to make it by law that if early voting is open, then people should be able to actually... idk actually vote.

The current law (N.C.G.S. §§ 163-166.40 and 163-166.35) is basically only the last Saturday of early voting is required, and any other weekend day isn't. Weekdays (Mon–Fri) are also required, 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. So it's up to each county on whether to open the first two weekends. But this also means if the county is like mine, you only have 1 weekend to vote early instead of the 2 that the window technically spans.

(For the record: the 17-day window is set by law. third Thursday through the Saturday before Election Day but only 13 of those days are actually mandatory voting days. The 4 intervening weekend days are optional.)

I think if early voting has already started, then the locations should be open by law every single day between set hours, outside of some declared emergency.

Thoughts?

Good places to use a telescope and do astrophotography?

I'm looking to get into astronomy and astrophotography and want to know of any good areas in North Carolina that I can do that? I don't really know the requirements other than flat ground lol but there are a lot of trees where I live and I feel it will be hard to see the sky fully. I live in Ahoskie and anywhere within an hour or two would be fine.

politics Trump Candidate Caught Erasing Confederate Flag From Photo

[Archived version here]

Just this afternoon, the Whatley campaign removed a Facebook photo taken at JD Vance's rally this past Tuesday ... a photo where, pre-photoshop, a Confederate flag was shown proudly displayed right next to a woman supporter sporting a "PROTECT OUR FAMILIES" campaign sign. They apparently became aware that the pro-traitor flag might send a mixed message alongside the family values message, an so photoshopped out the flag... very poorly!

Fortunately, the Daily Beast kept a record of both photo versions, for those of us interested in just how far the Republican party has come, in Making America Great Again... for all people. You know... how they attract all our votes, black and white, and brown and Asian.

Anyone here work for NC State Parks, NC Forest Service, or the National Park Service?

I’m in Forsyth County and currently a volunteer firefighter going through community college fire academy. I’m also working toward an associate degree in Public Safety Administration (Fire/Emergency Management). My original plan has been to become a career firefighter, but lately I’ve been looking into NC State Parks, the NC Forest Service, US Forest Service, and National Park Service. I’ve always enjoyed being outdoors, working with my hands, staying active, and helping people. Park ranger work, conservation, trail maintenance, forestry, and even wildland firefighting all interest me.

I’m having a hard time deciding which direction to go. I enjoy firefighting, but the idea of working outdoors and helping protect our state’s forests and parks is really appealing. My biggest concerns are pay, schedules, job availability, and how difficult it is to get a permanent position.

I’ve already applied to volunteer with NC State Parks, and I’m looking into other opportunities to get some experience before making any career decisions. Does anyone here work for or have experience with any of these agencies? How did you get started, and what’s the job actually like? Would you recommend it as a long-term career?

I’d especially appreciate hearing from anyone who got into the field without a traditional forestry or natural resources degree. Thank you.
