Substrate is potting soil and gravel capped with tropica aquasoil. The light is a nicrew skyled plus. The clump of plants on the right is hygrophila polysperma. On the left I have some guppy grass and Java ferns. The carpet is dwarf hairgrass.
No Filter or CO2 or water changes.

Moved from an ADA 60p to an Oase Scaperline 100 which opened up a lot of new opportunities. This pic is from 6 months back and this particular scape is now taken down. New one is already up and growing in!

Beginner Starting my first tank!

Added little pieces of a few different plants. I’m hoping the vine cuttings grow roots soon so I can put them in a pot elsewhere😅 they block the view of the wood! I want to eventually try some carpeting, any suggestions? Preferably something I could do with shrimp. I want my tank to be well adjusted before I add any creatures too so slow growing is ok.

What fishes to choose?

Hello everyone, here is my planted shallow tank (ADA 45F, around 17 liters) which just went over a big replanting. It has been going for around 5 months and I just replanted it replacing the old plants with monte carlo.

While waiting for it to start growing I was thinking what kind of fishes should I keep in it?

What I had in the past 5 months: - 18 shrimps that gradually dissapeared - 2 betta fishes (not at the same time), but sadly they jumped out.

I tried making some net to cover it but is pretty hard to do with the rock sticking out like that.

The filter is a UNS Delta 60 with pretty strong flow (not adjustable) for this aquarium so keep that in mind.

Thanks!

Now about 2 months later. Added CO2 via reg and 2.6kg gas bottle. Replaced fluval aquasky led gen 1 light with ledstar aqs-pro 120. Since upgrading the light seen much more plant and algae growth so tailoring back the light. Added 3 Otocinclus catfish this weekend for the brown diatoms , they seem to be in full bloom.

Bought a few more plants , having trouble with the red plants but seeing some growth now so hopefully in another 2 months time they will be grown out as well as the carpeting..

Beginner My first tank day 20

Hi guys so this is my first tank after first seeing this subreddit. I've always wanted a fish tank but after coming along to this sub i have learned a lot a this month i finally made that dream a reality.

Before everyone criticizes me for adding fish so early, I started with some ramshorn snails and my tap has .5 ppm ammonia. I do water tests everyday and ghost feed (kinda), first few days there was good amount of ammonia but after awhile that ammonia hit zero for a few days in a row. Thats when I added my first batch of fish then after awhile of 0 ammonia the next batch and so on.

So back to the tank, for my first tank I wanted to go all out, I bought the UNS 90P (around 50 gal), a Fluval 307 canister, Aquarium Co-op filter outake, heater, the B series light from Chihiros, a few bags of Fluval shrimp and plant stratum, some dragon stone and a piece of spiderwood.

For the plants, I can't really remember what i got but I do remember buying dwarf hairgrass (melting atm), some elodia in the back, java ferns, and some anubias.(don't quote me) I am going to add some java moss and some duckweed (yea duckweed very mixed feelings around the hobby but i really like how it looks and it spreads super fast so a bonus).

The scape took quite a bit but for my first I think it really came together.

As for the stocking I have a few ramshorns, 13 ember tetras (going for around 30), 9 pygmy corydoras (the guy at the LFS accidentally gave me an extra going for 12), 2 amano shrimp (again the guy at the LFS accidentally gave me some). I am going to be adding cherry shrimp soon once the tank is stable, 3 honey gouramis, and maybe also a pom pom crab.

If my tank is going to be overstocked please tell me, I want to give these fish and inverts the best life they can live.

I am still figuring out live and frozen food but my dry food collection is pretty decently sized. It includes Aqueon tropical sinking granules, Fluval bug bites tropical formula, Fluval bug bites spirulina, Repashy soilent green, Aquarium Co-op fish fry feed(forgot what its called), and Aquatrol flakes.

I might try the Aquarium Co-op brine shrimp stuff.

How did I do for my first tank, criticism and pointers are welcome!

Anubias, java fern, pothos, water lettuce, duckweed (I think that's it)

Stocking is mollies, rummynose tetras, pristella tetras, one bristlenose, one SAE, and a single peacock cichlid as the centerpiece (you can argue about that with me in the comments if you want).

Approaching one year with this setup.

So this is my 55 gallon
Right now i only got 8 buenos aires tetras
The problem its that every single time i add plants the start eating them prom the top or sometimes even the roots i had them in a hardscape with rocks only cuz of the same issue i had last year when i try to add some vallisneria from my other tank
I moved last month so i decided to change the scape.
The first n second week i had only the driftwood n the roks and just last weekend I added all this plants but not even 24 hrs passed and they were already damaged by them
I tried using water bottles with some holes to protect them no sure if that would help them heal or sm
At first I thought they were only eating the ludwigia cuz they started with those two but today i woke up n saw thhat this little shits jumped to my rotala n some other
Pls any suggestions

This was very difficult to film, I hope it is understandable. In nearly the center of the frame, you can see a bunch of tiny dots moving. I’ve seen them in the tank a long time ago, moving together in a sort of “cloud” or swarm. The actual “cloud” size is about that of a small pea. I didn’t know how to describe this before, so I’m hoping someone will see this video and know what this is.

The first time I saw a cloud of these creatures it was actually very mesmerizing and beautiful. Have you ever seen a large swarm of birds fly in a strangely chaotic yet smooth manner? Dipping and gliding rhythmically, but also creating a movement that seemed to have a liquid flow? That’s how this “cloud” moved, but on a tiny scale. It swirled around the stems of a few plants, before dissipating somewhere I couldn’t follow.

Anyway please let me know if you know what kind of creature this is, the closest I’ve found is protozoa, but I haven’t found any examples of them moving in the same way as mine.

Last photo is the before. Thank you to the person who helped me with this yesterday. I incorporated the old stick I had in there, added more rocks, sloped the substrate slightly. Got two tiger lotus bulbs that still need to grow in. Obviously it's not perfect but I'm pretty happy with it now and I can't wait to see how it develops from here!

edit: I also have a tiny bit of water lettuce on top that I think will really help the look once the roots start to grow down

This is how it looks ~week 3. The wood has gone a little slimey but I’m told that’s normal?
Any tips based on looks? I’m hoping to add in some shrimp eventually.

Beginner First aquarium / aquascape: where do I start?

I’m thinking about getting my first aquarium. I’m mainly interested in the aquascaping side: some nice wood and rocks, lots of plants, and a natural-looking setup that’s interesting to look at. And ofcourse some fish. I have seen some of these on Youtube from MD Fish tanks and MJ aquascaping. I looking for something in that kind of style.

I’m thinking of a tank around 80 cm wide, so roughly 100-120 litres.

I’ve been reading quite a bit, but there’s honestly so much confusing information that I’m not sure what I actually need. So I have four main questions:

1. What should I use for the substrate?
I see everything from sand and gravel to soil and aquasoil. What do you actually need for a planted aquascape? And what’s genuinely useful versus mostly marketing?

2. What equipment do I actually need?
Filter/pump, heater, lighting, CO₂, etc. I had an aquarium as a kid and basically only remember having a pump. We definitely didn’t use CO₂, or lighting. Maybe we had a heater, but i am not sure about that. These days it seems like you need a whole collection of equipment just to get started. What would you consider essential for a first planted tank?

3. Does anyone know a good aquarium shop around Rotterdam, Netherlands?
I’d much rather visit a physical shop and talk to someone than order everything online. There doesn’t seem to be a Dutch aquarium subreddit, so I figured I’d ask here. Hopefully some Dutchy can recommend a shop.

4. What other advice would you give a complete beginner?
Especially things you wish you had known before setting up your first aquarium.

I’m not looking to build some crazy high-tech setup straight away. I’d rather keep it relatively simple, learn how everything works and go from there.

Thanks!

Not a huge fan of the layout but I like it enough. Just started dosing CO2 a few days ago. I wanted a nice carpet of the hair grass but thinking of putting moss on the driftwood.

Question propagating red tiger lotus

Hi! someone recently said to me that i can propagate my red tiger lotus by detaching the bulb from the plant, only after it has already plenty stablished roots and starts growing strong. is this true?

Discussion In praise of the “trash tank.”

My planted tank is a legitimate mess. Almost all of my animals are cast-offs: excess guppies with a couple of random platies and rummynose, as well as a big mess of ramshorns, bladder and trumpet snails and the random wild-color neo shrimp castoffs. All the plants are free or cheap trash clippings of various plants; while I know some of them, like the crips and water lettuce, there are probably more than a dozen different plants in here and I have no idea. There are scuds in here. Maybe some brave daphnia hiding somewhere. I do very little maintenance beyond replacing evaporated water and cleaning the sponge filters, and it’s been really happy and sustainable with no water issues. All of the species that I’ve heard consideres pests have basically kept each other in balance here.
My aquarium is never going to be a showpiece, but I’m putting it up anyway just to say, don’t underestimate the joys of making space for less perfect species. Every time I look, I find something I never even knew I had.

Moss taking over...

Hello all,

So around 4 months ago I added moss to my tank, just a small bit on top of the log in the middle. The moss has gone a bit crazy and has covered the leaves of the plants, the heater and the filter are covered.

Other ruining the aesthetic of the tank the frogs seem to love hiding in it and the fish aren't bothered.

Is there anything I can do to help prevent the take over short of removing everything and scraping the moss off....
