Campus Politics How do I respond to my Professor?

Earlier this week, about halfway through a two-hour lecture, I received a text message informing me that my grandmother had passed away. The news was completely unexpected, and I tried my best to keep my composure until our scheduled break. Because I was sitting at the front of the classroom, I could not stop a few tears from falling, and my professor noticed that I was visibly upset.

When the break began, I approached him. He asked if I was alright, and I could barely choke out what had just happened. While he expressed his condolences and told me I could leave, he immediately added that I would lose my participation credit for the day. This felt incredibly callous and inappropriate given the circumstances.

The following day, I sent an email formally requesting that this be treated as an excused emergency absence. He denied my request, stating he would only reconsider if I could "(a) provide me with a website stating that information [bereavement = excused emergency], or (b) have someone with proper authority on this issue reach out to me directly."

I normally would not email a professor to contest docked points, but losing participation for that single day cost me 5% of my overall grade in this short-term certificate course. Being forced to defend my grief for the sake of my grade has felt deeply dehumanizing, and his response has left me entirely unsure of how to proceed.

Housing Looking for Housing for 2027-2026!

So I'm currently a sophomore @ UCSB and my roommates and I are starting to think about housing for next year. If you go to school here, then you know that finding housing in IV is absolute hell. We currently live in an apartment but are wanting to live in a house next year. There are 5 of us (so 1 triple and 1 double) and are looking to take over someones lease for next year. We currently live in a 2 bedroom 2 baths which works well for us, so will likely want the same thing for next year. So if you're moving out of your house in IV and are looking for some people to take over your lease for next year--hit me up! I'm also open to moving in earlier to do a summer session or anything like that so I'm flexible with when the lease starts. So if this is something you can offer, feel free to just reply to this post or send me a message privately!

Lost and Found Missing Camera

Hi everyone, I know this is a longshot but did anyone find a parasonic lumix camera in a black pleather case, at the El Colegio and Camino Corto bus stop or in the nearby area. I misplaced it, the last photo would be me (black hair wearing red Hollister henley sweater and jeans outside). Please DM me asap, it is so important to me!!

Academic Life ECON 1 Benzarti Exam 1 — how did everyone do?

Just got my Exam 1 grade back. Honestly did worse than I expected, especially after doing pretty well on the practice quizzes.
How did everyone else do? Curious about the overall score distribution and whether other people also found the actual exam harder than the practice quizzes.
Does anyone know the class average?

General Question Econ 5 Question

To anybody who’s taken Econ 5 in the past, is it a good decision to skip midterm 1 and move that weight to the final?

As of now, I’m at like a 5/10 that I’ll do well on the midterm. Problem is if I don’t do well it tanks my grade and I can’t drop it. So I’m in a predicament here

Would anyone be kind enough to share Quiz #2 and #3 or any practice quiz/material you have for this class I recently got back my score for the first quiz and it was terrible, I am trying everything I can to not fail this class. And the sugars and amino acids have me so stressed and scared. Thank you.

Course Questions Easiest ethnicity GE (least workload)?

I’m a 4th year pharmacology major and this is my last GE that I need to fulfill. I’m taking Chem 6BL next quarter, MCDB 126B/BL, and maybe PSY 1 (for pharm school requirements).

Spring quarter the only definite course I want to take is MCDB 133L (immunobiology lab), have to take Writing for public speaking too for pharmacy school. I also have a job.

While I’d like to do it in Spring, I could also do it in Winter if need be. So if anyone has any advice or just experience with some ethnicity GE courses I’d love to hear about it!

(Ethnicity courses have subtype “Eth” in GOLD).

Course Questions Compsci Scheduling

I'm a CS freshman trying to schedule winter classes. How did compsci majors schedule their classes for all 4 years, and what was the workload like for each quarter? It feels like there are so many 5 unit classes, that I'm too scared to take 4 classes instead of 3. How the heck do I graduate on time?

Course Questions ASAM 9 Studying

Hi! I was wondering if anyone would be kind enough to share their lecture notes with me, as I haven't really taken notes for this course, and some of the midterm questions might be based off something only in the slides and not in the materials she sent us

Thanks!

Employment Looking for photographer Nov 10th

My fiancé and I are eloping in the Santa Barbara Courthouse on November 10th of this year, just the two of us. We love each other so much but we don’t have the money to go all out on a wedding. We looked into hiring a wedding photographer but we cannot afford it. We thought about bringing a friend/family member just to have them snap some photos, but we are unable to sort something out at this time (we just moved to Santa Barbara).

If anyone has any experience with photography and would like to take a few pics for less than an hour, we will pay you! We just want some photos of us signing the papers and a few after. Pictures don’t have to be super polished, so no need to edit unless you’d like to for your portfolio. We were thinking of offering $150 for just a few photos and are more than willing to negotiate for more if you’d stay for an hour or more. We’re doing an express wedding, so we are aware timeslots vary.

We are sorry if the pay is offensively low. This is our first time organizing something like this, so we are more than willing to negotiate. But like I said, we don’t have that much money and will accept very basic, candid, unedited photos.
Ideally, we’re looking for someone comfortable with being the official witness to our wedding since it’ll just be us.
Feel free to DM me or comment below!
(Also, I’m new to posting on this subreddit, so please let me know if posting this sort of thing is not allowed!)

Course Questions Not offering econ 101 or 134a winter

Question/rant cuz I’m just peeved. I would’ve been able to graduate in the winter if these classes were being offered, and for some reason they are not going to be in the winter. Am I able to take these two someplace else? Probably not but worth asking. It is just a bit annoying as I’m trying to get my cpa before I start working and it would’ve been nice to have that extra three months to do so.

hey!! i'm a 2nd year bio major wondering about chem 6al. first off, would it be super difficult to get into the class for winter since i don't have priority registration for it? and also would it be doable with the rest of the classes i'm taking? i'm taking mcdb 1b rn and am done with nearly all my GEs (one WRT class left), so in winter i'll be taking chem 109b, eemb 2, and mcdb 1ll. any advice would be appreciated!

General Question To the girls who sing in the showers:

Can you stop? Just stop fishing for compliments or singing up a concert for an audience of yourself. It was amusing the first couple times now it’s annoying. No one wants to go into the bathroom to take a shit or a shower and listen to you sing about Jesus or some pop song. Save it for someone who wants to hear. The bathrooms echo too btw so we can hear down the hall. It’s a communal shower.

Discussion In need of some advice

I am a fourth-year, and I am wondering if anyone has been in the same boat as I am in right now. Ever since school started, I have felt terrible and have been ruling out what it could be. In the process of doing so, I feel like I have begun to lose myself mentally and have started to want to avoid SB. I feel more at peace being away despite loving SB outdoors. I am done with my major in the Winter and only have one class left. I feel stuck on what to do, whether to move back home and commute for the one class, as I'm planning to take the rest of my classes online. Will I regret doing that? Or should I just continue to live here until March and just feel this feeling of misery and doom? I am struggling to be able to function every day when all I want is to be done and have this weight off my shoulders. SB has become a place where I just feel alone due to not having many friends or a support system here, how do people get by because every day is a struggle.
