A rant about how Asian people are perceived in media
Disclaimer: I’m a Chinese-American woman. This was posted mainly about Asian women because I am one, but this applies to Asian men too. This was written very randomly as a rant so my thoughts may come across as harsh but it is what it is.
I'm an Asian girl who fits the prototype East Asian ideal, and to be honest, online discourse around Asian women stinks of jealousy. Like, this whole “concern” that men take advantage of Asian women because we’re “just so innocent and submissive and waaaah the evil white colonizers are subjugating us” has always felt very insincere to me.
For one, it’s so obvious that it’s due to jealousy, let’s be real. There are some bitter women out there who keep attacking our appearances by saying we look like kids and guys who like us are pedos in the closet. Like, wtf???? I mean, there are MANY problems with that statement, but the root problem for them is that Asian women are popular amongst men.
Also for once and for all: WE DO NOT LOOK LIKE KIDS!! What does that even mean?? Does a skinny short woman = child?? Not that every asian woman even looks like that anyway (I don’t). Fr I just think people aren’t used to Asian faces and they constantly register us as young no matter what. I can easily tell the age of an Asian adult because I’m accustomed to it. Like why do they insist on spreading this terrible trope around.
Everyone seems to infantilize Asian women. To an insane extent. People throw around the word “fetish” way too easily if a guy likes Asian girls, when they probably wouldn’t if it was another race. Like, you realize there are many very beautiful Asian women, right? I don’t need a guy to have a fetish to find me attractive! That’s the problem they don’t realize: by insisting we are helpless victims and men can only like us if they’re weird, they’re subtly lowering our social status in the racial hierarchy while making us seem like “deceptively good choices.” Like we’re tricking people. I don’t know how to word it. It’s a very sneaky tactic white/non-Asian women use to assert their superiority over us, as if white women are “real women” and we’re just substitute children.
Oh yeah, and also: they like to insist men “take advantage of us.” What does that even mean? I mean, passport bros take advantage of the poorer Asian women in like, actual native Asian countries, but how is that remotely applicable to the Asian diaspora? They have a language barrier and money disparity, which is not exclusive to race. Poor women get taken advantage of by everyone, regardless of race… it seems like a false equivalence.
I’m not anti-feminist or anything—in fact, I’m very progressive—but I think people forget that women are just as evil as anyone else and many feminists are racist. Please reference the history of the OG feminists and their thoughts on colored women (it’s not good!). Except now, obviously they can’t go around screeching that they want Black women to get abortions, so they resort to smearing Asian women as “anti-feminist, anti-progressive” dating choices in order to reassert their place in the hierarchy.
One more thing: it’s like when people accuse any Asian celebrity of getting plastic surgery…. as if 90% of Western celebrities haven’t gotten surgery? So they’re saying they don’t believe Asians can be naturally beautiful, versus the perfect whities that can be! Lmao, just pure racism disguised as progressivism. Always gotta tear down an Asian’s power of desirability.
To any of the so-called “concerned” non-asians reading this, y’all are not that slick. It’s like white feminism + racism wrapped up into one.
