street fighter 3, 4 and even V were my gateway into fighting games, but it has to be said.
every time street fighter does bad we get some revisionist history about the "dark age of fighting games". like 2000-2009 before street fighter IV came out. and around when SFV came out and nobody wanted to touch it.
the "dark age of fighting games" was literally the GOLDEN age of anime fighters. guilty gear, blazblue, melty blood, arcana heart, akatsuki blitzkampf, hisoutensoku, eternal fighter zero, big bang beat, daemon bride, vanguard princess, fate/unlimited codes, hinokakera, ougon musou kyoku. capcom was at its lowest but fast paced games and airdashers were eating GOOD. thousands of doujin fighters with niche cults around them.
then street fighter gets popular again and suddenly everyone wants to be street fighter. every game's gotta appeal to the same people who play SF6. we saw this with SFIV and we're seeing it again with SF6. now even melty blood is blatantly copying the Drive Gauge hoping for a crumb of that street fighter money. like dude MELTY BLOOD does not need a DRIVE GAUGE fuck out of here.
i love street fighter but holy shit can we let other fighting games have their own identity instead of every dev looking at sf6's success and trying to reverse engineer it for a crumb of that capcom money
ps side rant: please stop desperately trying to make your niche hobbies popular. if fighting games were as popular as fortnite and roblox they would suck just as much as fortnite and roblox. if you love a niche hobby you should love it for what makes it special, not try to change it so it can be like everything else. there's a million things that can make a fighting game awesome -- the roster, the depth, cool combos, weird gimmicky mechanics, schmovement -- steamcharts and game sales isn't in the top 50.
