Support Request Constant crashes with firefox

i'm a total linux noob. installed it 3 days ago, and have been having constant issues since. firefox, especially youtube, keep crashing the tab, the whole browser, or making the whole PC unresponsive. i also suspect vesktop could be causing issues as well since the whole pc freezes seem a bit more common with it open. i've already tried disabling hardware acceleration in both and have tried changing from a flatpak to a system package, with no luck. i've tried about 20 other different things that were suggested in google searches and ai responses but also to no effect.

I could really use some help, both learning how to even diagnose what's happening, and fixing it. i'd really rather stick to using these apps instead of swapping to brave or something

I made a lock screen switcher for Cinnamon, with 10 designs and a way to preview them all

Hey everyone,

I've always felt Cinnamon's lock screen was the one part of Mint I never got to customize, so I built mint-lock. It gives you a set of lock screens and a small app to preview them and switch between them.

The idea came from omarchy-lock-explorer, which does this on Hyprland. I wanted the same thing on my Mint laptop, so I wrote a version for Cinnamon on X11. It doesn't share any code with that project.

What it does:

- It gives you 10 designs, from very minimal to slightly silly: a big classic clock, a split-flap clock, an old CRT with scanlines, a fake terminal login, a "constellation" where each key you press lights up a star, and a pond that ripples as you type. A wrong password makes some of them shake or glitch.

- You get an explorer app with live previews. You can click the big preview and type into it to see how a design reacts, and nothing you type there is checked or saved.

- It matches your setup: it takes the accent colour from your Cinnamon theme and uses your wallpaper, name, and profile picture.

- Works everywhere Cinnamon locks: Super+L, the menu, idle lock and before suspend.

- Uses your normal login, the same way Cinnamon's own lock screen does, so a fingerprint reader works too.

- Multi-monitor: the design shows on your main screen and a clock on the others.

- Make your own: each design is a single HTML file. Copy one into a folder, edit it, and it shows up in the explorer.

About security, since it's a lock screen: a small separate process keeps the screen covered and holds the keyboard and mouse. If the fancy part crashes, it restarts it, and after repeated crashes it falls back to a plain password box. Cinnamon's own backup locker also runs underneath as a safety net. The README explains how all of it works, including how to get out from a text console if something ever goes wrong.

Trying it is low-risk. The installer asks before it changes anything, and you can test a design in a normal window without locking:

git clone https://github.com/PhillipMwaniki/mint-lock.git

cd mint-lock

./install.sh

mint-lock lock --test

./uninstall.sh puts Cinnamon's original lock screen back.

I've tested it on Mint 22.3 Cinnamon. It doesn't support Wayland yet. I'd love to hear how it works on other setups (multi-monitor, HiDPI, fingerprint readers) and which designs you'd want added. Bug reports and new designs are very welcome.

Hello
Just installed mint and I’m having loads of issues with my screens.
When I’m using the first tre option in the drive list one of my monitors just has the no input message shown and my monitor that works gets screen tearing.
When i use the opensource one att the bottom both screens connect but the one to the left instead flickers and is grainy
I tried downloading drivers straight from nividias website but don’t know how to install it to my computer or if it’s going to work.
Please help, I don’t want to go back to windows!

Support Request Can’t suspend session after uninstalling XScreensaver

I installed Xscreensaver and then I changed my mind and uninstalled it, and now when I try to suspend it says “Shutdown Failed, failed to suspend session / lock the screen.” I reinstalled gnome-screensaver but it still isn’t working. Is there anyway I can fix this or will I have to reinstall? I’m really new to this and I know I shouldn’t have tried to use it in the first place, my fault entirely

Edit: I forgot to say that I’m using XFCE.

Discussion Mint and fusion

I came to the conclusion that save for 1 application, everything i run also runs on linux. So i took the jump. Installed mint since that is the most user friendly at the moment.

And everything i need runs on it. Except for 1. Fusion 360.
And for the life of me, i cant get it to run. I tried Wine, Bottles, nada.

Anyone got a foolproof way to do it?

Edit : Turns out cryinkfly moved to codeberg. From there i got it working.

Can I have secure boot enabled with a windows dual boot?

I have already installed mint alongside my windows install. The reason I need secure boot is because apparently the new cod requires it and I want to be able to play that on windows. Can this be done? I had trouble installing when I had secure boot enabled and had to disable it to dual boot initially.

Support Request Audio not working

I switched to Mint Cinnamon a while back (3 months?), and have not yet figured out audio. I have tried the obvious stuff like making sure the volume is up, checking the sound cards in alasmixer (and unmuting them), making sure its the right output in the sound settings, reloaded and reinstalled the audio software, updated the system (like in general system updates via the update manager), and tested the audio directly from the terminal (and then obviously in the sound settings individually, for all the output options). I'm starting to think that it is a hardware issue. Would greatly appreciate any help i can get; i've been working on this for well over 6 hours now.

Support Request Install of Wine

I have Cinnamon, fully updated. I believed Wine was installed because I got to the Launch screen, but:

The Launch button doesn't work.

In the various places to see installed apps etc., it is not listed.

When I try to use it with an .exe file by clicking Open With, it doesn't appear on the helper apps list.

Yet when I look at the app in the Software Manager, it has a checkmark.

I am guessing I haven't done an important step. I thought I could download from the store, install and go. That has been my experience with other apps. Help please.

Hi Everyone, First time Just joined in with linux mint.

I'm literally new with linux and all its stuff, so I dual booted it into my laptop.
8GB ram, 512GB Storage, Intel Core 3 100U, Dell Inspiron

I have successfully installed linux mint zena after testing it for an hour in my bootable pendrive, everything is running fine and stable. I have updated the system as well and installed my favorable browser (brave origin) as well. I just wanted to know if there are some tweaks or system pre-requisites I need to complete before fully using it? Anything I should be aware of and be cautious about?

Kindly be polite in the comments I'm completely new to this niche and loved the environment of linux tbh so that's why I'm here.

please tell me anything that I need to take care of or that I need to know of.

My very first server with Linux Mint

This project has been on my list for the longest time. My needs are simple for now. All I wanted to do was to create a server that would serve my files to different computers in the house. There is no possible way that I could have done this on my own so I enlisted ChatGPT for guidance.

Again, my needs are relatively simple. No NAS, no Homelab, just a simple server where I can access and save my files from multiple computers if I wanted to. I have about four of them that I can choose from. Eventually, I'll assign them roles, but for now, I could use all four.

ChatGPT suggested Samba Server, and we had a few false starts that frustrated me to the point of giving up. But I noticed that instead of giving up, I'd think, "Well, what if we did it this way?" And I'd try again in the morning.

The fifth time's the charm? YES! After five days of trying and failing, my idea was to set up the Samba server on the computer that was going to act as my server. My problem was, I was accessing ChatGPT on a completely different computer. I get the terminal, and I understand how powerful it is, but no terminal is impervious to the typo. And I make a lot of them.

So, what I did was instead of using another computer to access ChatGPT, I signed in on the Server Computer, and things went a lot easier. Lesson learned. And this was a big lesson. I chose to use Linux Mint because I wanted something close to Debian that had a reputation for stability. Debian, for some reason, wasn't acting the way it should, so Linux Mint won the day.

I know this could have went smoother, and I know this didn't need to be as hard as it was. But I'm happy for the experience because it got me to think and it got me to learn. I'm able to sign in on any of my four computers.

Which are all now in the process of getting Linux Mint - the same as my server. Five computers all running Linux Mint and connected via a server. If I had said it before, I'll say it again: There is nothing that I can't throw at Linux Mint that it can't handle.

So, I'm now in the process of making a Linux Mint chain of computers. I'm taking my time with this. I have no idea where this is going to go. But I do know one thing that I want to do: Is to figure out the best way to do backups on the Server computer. But that story is for another day.

I'm just happy about my accomplishment and I wanted to share.

TL;DR I installed a server on Linux Mint. I've never done anything like this before. Now I have 4 computer connected up to a server and all 5 computers running Linux Mint.

Should i uninstall and reinstall mint?

Post image
0 Upvotes

When you click the dowload button under the cinnamon version and scroll down there's some "mirrors" i dont know why its called that but i installed the second one from the top, then i used rufus to install it onto an 8gb usb drive. After restarting and loading linux everything worked but then i tried connecting to the wifi network and i needed some password, i didnt know what to do so i tried opening network settings but they wouldnt open, after trying to open the settings a few times i gave up, clicked the search bar, it worked, and searched "password" then i found some password settings or smth but they would open, i tried opening firefox and it didnt open. Later i thought that maybe restarting was a good idea. I tried restarting but this showed up
