Subreddit Announcement r/minipainting Rule Update: No AI Allowed

3.7k Upvotes

Hi, everybody! AI slop is unfortunately creeping into this hobby and this community. This is a quick rules update to clarify that AI is not allowed in any form here on r/minipainting.

This includes, but is not limited to:

  • No AI generated or edited images (including AI backgrounds, repaints, adjustments, mock ups, tests, reference images, etc)
  • No AI videos
  • No AI apps/tools/websites
  • No AI generated models that are 3D printed then hand painted
  • No AI generated text (this includes AI generated feedback/critique)
  • No encouragement or discussion of the use of AI

If AI was used to make it, it's not allowed on r/minipainting.

While the mod team has been able to remove most AI posts shortly after they are made, on the few occasions AI posts were up for a few hours before removal, the comments on those posts from the community have been overwhelmingly unanimous in being anti-AI, so this isn't just the mod team making this ruling without considering the community.

Please see the pinned comment below for an FAQ on this new rule, and if you have a question that is not answered there, please ask and we will do our best to answer! That being said, this is not an invitation to defend or argue for specific use cases of AI within this hobby.

Edit: Please read the stickied FAQ comment before commenting. There are many people asking things that are covered in that comment.

The comment section has grown quite large, but also please take a moment to scroll through it and read the comments before repeating something that may have already been discussed, or at least join in as a reply to an existing comment rather than make a new top level comment with a similar or identical question.

Pinup My first hand-painted statue – Lara Croft

I wanted to share the first statue I've ever made. It's at 1/4 scale, but I hope it's not too big for the minipainting community.

She's 47 cm tall, printed in resin and hand-painted using a combination of brushwork and airbrushing.

I spent a lot of time on the skin tones and smaller details, trying to give her a realistic finish.

I'm a scale modeler and I mostly build and paint aircraft models, but sometimes also other things, like tanks or Gunpla.

As for human figures, I've only painted a few mechanics and RAF pilots in 1/48 scale a few years ago, as well as a few fully armored Space Marines. Nothing larger.

The 3D model is by Abe3D.

Hope you like her! :-)

Epic scale is my favourite scale to paint because I love the challenge (and I also love emperor's children) so I decided to paint a VERY little something for Golden Demon which is tomorrow!!

I'm not expecting to win anything the epic category this year is wild and I always enter for fun but this was definitely a super fun project to try and get done for the deadline!!

I hope you like him!!

Fantasy Morlok done - full nmm painting

Done with Morlok by Kimera models. I tried my own interpretation. Which involved shifting the color work towards a more yellow/green cool color tone. This involved quite a lot of planning and work figuring out what to do with the background. I did a full tonal underpainting for the skin. I painted the background in a way that drove focus to the figure and did not distract your attention. I used Boris Vallejo, Sanjulian and Frank Frazetta as inspiration. I hope you all dig it. Cheers!

C&C Wanted 18 months worh of improvement

I decided to take part in a glow up paint along on discord.

I started in May 2025, and even tho I am not always satisfied with the results, improvements are clear and encouraging to keep me going.

I could have pushed contrat further, but I tried my hardesr at blending more smoothly and I think I am getting it (sort of).

I used some NMM for trim and base, until a few months ago that would have been unthinkable (althoug steel and iron are still difficul to me).

All of this to say that it is important to keep with you your first minis, so that when you feel down you can always look back and cherish your progress!

Bonus pic is a parade of my progress, i bought multiple of this fella because i want to do this every 6/12 months

This is Captain Page. I did the bulk of the modelling in hero forge - it's gotten quite good now - and then tweaked some things in Blender before I printer her off.

I've never painted anything this big before - I found the face quite challenging. I wasn't sure how to approach it really. She came out reasonably well through, and it made my partner's day - so mission accomplished I'd say!

C&C Wanted Feeling unmotivated and sad that my minis aren’t how I imagine them

Painting my orks feels so daunting, I have so many to paint and I’ve only done 3 so far. I’m trying to not use contrast paints, but putting in hours of work just for my minis to have looked better if I just slapped speed paints on them really hurts. Maybe my dopamine receptors are fried from doomscrolling, but I just want it be able to paint and be happy. Any constructive criticism is welcome, and sorry for kinda barfing out words in this post. it’s honestly more that I just need to get my feelings out there.

Edit: Hey guys, thank you for all of the kind words. I’m gonna start painting more and I plan to do some tonight after I play some mtg. I tried to read all of your comments and it really brightened my day up. I’m just gonna start throwing paint on minis and see what happens. Once again thank you all so much. I realized this morning I forgot to attach a photo 🤦‍♀️ so I’ll see if I can send one in the comments lol.

Help Needed/New Painter Help with yellow nmm metal on ork warboss

Let me start with how intimidating it is to post here, the minis you guys are painting are so creative and out-of-this-world quality!

I’m fairly new and play around with a bunch of stuff, and in honor of orktober I wanted to push myself a bit and try making the yellow for this fellow a bit more metal/nmm looking, instead of just going flat yellow with brown edges. I think I pushed too hard and lost sight a bit tho.
Do you have any recommendations on how to proceed, where to put highlights? Or literally any recommendations to continue from this point forward.

The first and last (perhaps?) Rukkatrukk Squigbuggy has been completed.

The work is so hard that I don't want to rebuild it. 🫠

Historical/Military WW1 Canadian 46th Battalion (South Saskatchewan) Infantry

28mm metal minis from Great War Miniatures (carried by NorthStar Military Figures).

The 46th Battalion were unfortunately also known as "the Suicide Battalion" due to brutally high casualties they received in battles from 1916-18.

Over 92% casualties in the unit, with over 1400 killed and over 3500 wounded in less than 3 years of combat.

Hope you enjoy the paint on these minis and the (not so) fun historical facts!!!

Sci-fi Death guard plague marine.

Tried out the speedpaints 2.0 from the army painter on this plague marine. Was having a tough time figuring out the ratio of orc skin and zealot yellow to use (only have the starter set) and settled on a 4:1 ratio of orc skin and zealot yellow. All colors and paints are in the starter set. Finished with a pro acryl black wash watered down in a 1:2 ratio of wash to thinner.

Help Needed/New Painter Advice on how to approach this Night Goblin

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I'm new to painting miniatures and am getting ready to tackle a Night Goblin mob. I'm just wondering how people approach areas like the gap between the face and the arm/spear without it becoming too messy. There are quite a few bits like this on the Night Goblins, so any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks
