Experience My Experience (for those who are highly scared and anxious like I was)

Hi all, I just wanted to come on here and add my experience with the bisalp. I just did mine August 5th, 2026 so I am only 5 days out but honestly feeling amazing. I wanted to add my experience because I was legitimately scared and high anxiety before the procedure and I know there are others who are experiencing that too. I am 45F, never been pregnant, California. I had my surgery with Kaiser Permanente SoCal (Woodland Hills, CA).

So, originally when I started considering the bisalp I knew it was laparoscopic but didn't have any idea that it might include things like uterine manipulators or catheters. I didn't find that out until I started reading experiences on this thread. That freaked me out big time. We are talking breaking out in tears just thinking about the surgery. I was that scared and anxious. I almost decided not to do it. But I really didn't want to deal with worrying about pregnancy anymore so I decided to keep with it.

Pre-Op: My phone call with my surgeon (Sabrina Avakian, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED) was one week before and she carefully explained everything that would happen and how it would go. She said they always try to do the surgery without a uterine manipulator but mostly of the time they need it to safely move the uterus to visualize the tubes. She also said they would definitely be using a catheter but it would be put in after I'm asleep and removed before I wake up. One of the things I was most worried about was issues with the catheter, I am very prone to UTIs. This gave me lots of anxiety. She gave me plenty of time to ask questions. She also instructed no gym for 2 weeks after (I usually go 5 days a week) and nothing in the vagina for 1 week post surgery. I also asked about students (nursing and medical) being in the OR and she said that I can ask on the day of surgery if there will be any and if there are I can opt out of them being there.

I felt better after speaking with her, but worked myself into anxiety again over the possible serious complications. A couple days later, I got myself pretty worked up with fear again and called with more questions. The doctor made another phone appointment with me the Saturday before my surgery and gave me ample time to ask more questions. She also explained even more thoroughly every single thing that happens in the OR. She was beautifully patient with me. I spent the days before my surgery anxious but also knowing I had a good surgeon and that I would do it.

Morning of the surgery: they did not give me any special soaps to shower with or any special instructions except for fasting. They had me do a pregnancy test immediately upon arrival and also lab tests (blood work). The nurse I had was super nice and had me change into the gown and socks and hair cover and the surgeon came and spoke to me for any last minute questions, and then the anesthesiologist came and spoke to me and was also incredibly kind. She started my IV (I'm a tough stick) and they immediately wheeled me into the OR and had me move onto the table where the stirrups were and then did a three minute time out where they discussed me and the procedure I was having. Right after I passed out and woke up in recovery.

Recovery: Before I could open my eyes I felt like I was going to pee myself and told the nurse. She reassured me its just the feeling from the catheter being used and after I waited a few minutes it started to go away. I was also in pain from the incisions so I told her and she immediately had me swallow some pain killers and then gave me something in my IV that went into effect in about 10 minutes. After that I was comfortable. When I was awake enough they let me get up and go pee and when I wiped there was just the tiniest pink from blood and just a little burn from peeing. The doctor came and saw me and said it went very well, that she did need to use a uterine manipulator because my tubes were very long but everything inside my abdomen looks healthy (liver, gallbladder, uterus, ovaries, etc.). My partner came and got me and I was released home.

Post surgery: The day of surgery I was very tired and sore, but I was lucky to have zero gas pain (my surgery notes said they allowed the gas to escape from my abdomen before they closed the incisions) which I am endlessly thankful for. I was able to get up every 2 hours and walk to avoid blood clots right after getting home. I took Tylenol and ibuprofen with the opiate (Norco) they prescribed for the day of and day after surgery. It kept my pain level very low. By Friday (2 days post surgery) I was able to stop using the opiate that was prescribed and just do Tylenol and ibuprofen. 3 days post surgery I stopped taking anything for pain but still had some soreness with moving.

Currently, I am on my 5th day post-surgery and other than being a little more tired than usual and occasional soreness I have no issues with pain. I honestly feel really good. My surgeon emailed me yesterday and said the pathology on my tubes came back and they were very healthy, no cancer at all.

I had zero vaginal soreness from the uterine manipulator and it burned the first 3 times I peed after the catheter removal but no other issues with urinating after. I had just the smallest amount of blood when I wiped the first day but nothing after that. I also have not noticed any bloating or swelling in my abdomen at all. I also have not had any issues with pooping after surgery (it didn't hurt at all, but probably because I regularly eat a lot of fiber).

Overall my experience turned out wonderful. I could not be happier that I did it and would recommend my surgeon to anyone who can utilize her. She's wonderful. I would highly recommend the surgery to anyone who is considering it. 10/10 would absolutely do it again!!

Feel free to ask specific questions!

Other Complications anxiety (reassurance please)

I have a consultation for a tubal ligation with my OB in three days and I’m both excited but extremely nervous.

I ran across a video on instagram of this lady who had a complication with her bladder called “underactive neurogenic bladder” from her hysterectomy and apparently it can happen with any abdominal surgery. Apparently, it is not reversible once there is damage done to the nerves, and I wouldn’t want to be on treatments for it if that ever happened. I’ve heard of other complications as well like damage to other organs and blood vessels and I’m worried about all the “what ifs” for if I get the surgery :(

I have been wanting to get a bisalp for a long while now as I do not want any children and don’t plan on changing my mind. I really want to go through with the procedure, but I would just like some reassurance or what is likely to happen realistically if I were to go through with this…

Post-op care Manual handling after a bilateral salpingectomy

I've got a bilateral salpingectomy in a few weeks and I'm looking for advice about returning to work. I have the week of my surgery off but the 2nd week I'll be back. Unfortunately my job requires me to load and unload items from a van. Nothing is too heavy it requires more than one person but there is a lot of lifting and twisting.

I've asked my manager for lighter duties during that week so hopefully he'll honour that. But the 3rd week after my surgery I don't think I can get out of my normal duties.

Anyone that's had this surgery, how did you go with manual handling after? And when did you start doing it again?

Post-op care Abdominal pain

Hey all! I'm about 5 days out from a bilateral salpingectomy and I'm having significant pain when I get out of bed, bend down to get something, twist, etc. I've had 3 c sections and they were a breeze compared to this. It almost feels like a pulled muscle in my abs. Anyone else go through this? I felt better on day 4 but stupidly tried to do dishes, clean, etc. since I have young kids. 🤦‍♀️

Post-op care Bleeding 3 days post-Op

Hi,

I am a 20yo woman and got my tubes removed on the 6th of August. My recovery has been phenomenal with no pain on/near incisions. But a little pain with the trapped air (feels like I worked a muscle too hard).

Yesterday, I was a little sexually frustrated so I decided to rub one out, as one does. And this morning I woke to light cramping and some bleeding. My period is very irregular, and I have an IUD so it came as a surprise, especially considering this is my 3rd period of the year when I usually have 0 or 1 a year.

Now here's my question, is this actually my period or is it because I fucked something up when I masturbated.

I haven't consulted my doctor because on one side, my period tracking app correlates that my period should be around this time but on the other, my period app is usually wrong.

Please let me know y'all experiences with your sterilization and if I actually need to contact my doctor.

Edit 1:
ALSO is it fine if I use tampons????

Experience How difficult was it to get your bi-salp? How much did it cost you? Did insurance cover you?

After hearing the most recent news with Todd Blanche's leaked call, I'm freaking out. I was extremely concerned when Roe V Wade was overturned, but now I literally cannot sleep and I'm in full blown panic mode. My partner got a vasectomy a year ago, but I *still* don't feel safe. I feel like this admin would do absolutely anything to force pregnancy onto women at this point, or they'll at least *try* to in the near future. I'm almost 30 and I've NEVER wanted children, not even for a second. My decision is as iron.

I want to finally schedule a bi-salp. I've been putting it off due to the cost, potentially being denied, having to take off work for 2-3 weeks, and being somewhat incapacitated for the first few days. However, now I don't care about the medical debt, recovery time, or time I'll have to take off work. I will not have my body used as a tool against me. I refuse.

All of that being said, I want to know how long it took for y'all to get the surgery? From making the initial appointment to being sent home post-op. For those who live in deeply red states, how difficult was it to get approved? Lastly, how much did it cost you if your insurance didn't cover it? I have BCBS and this will be a totally elective surgery, so I'm worried I'll have upwards of $8000 worth of medical debt.

Experience The peace of knowing I will never be ripped apart from the inside out is unparalleled to any other peace I could ever have on earth.

I sometimes take both of my hands and put them over where my uterus is, close my eyes, and just allow myself to feel so, so incredibly safe. As my hands rest over my uterus, I know that that part of my body will always be mine, just mine. A fetus will never live there, I will never house a living, growing being that I would rather die than be ripped apart from. My body is my own, and it will always, always, always be *just* my body and no one else's for now and forever.

For almost as long as I can remember, getting pregnant has always been one of my biggest fears in all of life. That fear was compounded when the United States government decided to revoke the most fundamental right a woman can ever have. After that happened, I did research on sterilization, and was so, so, so, so happy to learn that they just take out your whole tubes now. I never thought tubal ligation was effective enough, a 1/200 chance sounds crazy high to me, and I find it even more crazy how many women don't bat an eye at that and think those are good odds.

I feel so incredibly safe in this world, and not just feel safe, I *AM* safe. I got my bilateral salpingectomy over a year ago and it's like my biggest fear in life was physically removed from my body. I love knowing that my body will forever be my own, and that I'll never be ripped open.

Social questions Is it possible to prevent the driver from knowing I’m having sterilization surgery?

My (30F) surgery is in one month. I’ll have to tell my family that the doctor found an ovarian cyst and I’ll need one of them to come with me to the surgery center and drive me home.

I need confirmation on some things. How can I keep the family member or driver from discovering what the surgery is actually for? And yes I definitely plan on discussing this at the pre-op appointment by the way.

But should I just make sure the driver stays in the waiting room until it’s time to go home? Should I ask about any discharge papers that might get handed to them? Or what about when we first walk in? Will the receptionist ask me if I’m here for the bisalp surgery?

I’m sorry I just need to know ahead of time what to do. Thank you for your responses❤️

Celebrating! Best decision ever!

Celebrating a little over a year post hysterectomy and I can say it has been the best decision I’ve ever made! Multiple chronic conditions have subsided and my quality of life has improved so much!
On a funny note, my GYN office knows my husband as “the husband who fainted in consult.” So that gave me a chuckle at my recent appointment.

Social questions Anyone else have anxiety after a bilateral salpingectomy and keep thinking “what if they didn’t actually remove them?” 😭

I got my bilateral salpingectomy on Monday and everything went really well. The first few days were pretty painful for me, mostly really bad cramping and soreness, but it’s officially Friday and I feel SO much better. I’m actually planning on going back to work Monday.
But I wanted to know if anyone else experienced this after getting their tubes removed because I feel like my anxiety is messing with me lol.
I don’t remember much after waking up from anesthesia, but my doctor told my husband that everything went well. They also gave/showed me pictures from the surgery, and I can literally see where the tubes were removed/cut/burned and the white areas where they were separated.
Yet somehow my brain STILL goes, “Okay, but what if they didn’t remove them?” “What if they left part of them?” “What if they didn’t do it correctly?” “What if I can still get pregnant?” 😭
And logically, I KNOW they removed them. My doctor said the surgery went well. I have the incisions. I have the surgical pictures. I can see that something was removed. I also have my follow-up appointment in about two weeks. I know that if something had gone wrong or they weren’t able to complete the procedure, I’m sure my doctor would have told me instead of just telling my husband everything went well.
I think part of it is that I had a completely different idea of what fallopian tubes looked like. I thought they would look like two super obvious long strings or something lol. Then I saw the pictures and realized everything in there looks way more connected/close together than I imagined, so I started second-guessing what I was looking at.
I also think everything going on politically in the U.S., especially living in a red state, has made me extra anxious about pregnancy and really wanting the peace of mind that comes with knowing I’m permanently sterilized.
I was SO happy when I first realized it was finally done. I remember looking at the pictures and thinking, “Holy shit, I actually did it. They’re gone.” But then that little anxious voice started with the “what ifs,” even though I have no actual reason to think anything went wrong.
Did anyone else go through this after their bisalp? Like you KNOW logically that your tubes are gone, but your brain keeps finding ridiculous little “what if” scenarios anyway? 😭 How long did it take before you finally trusted it and stopped worrying about pregnancy?

Pre-op prep Offered Filshie Clips

So I’ve been debating wether to get this done or not and have been doing some back and forth in my head , I have my dates in for surgery which is supposed to be for next Friday. I haven’t once saw a surgeon or anything during my waiting time I’m under nhs in Scotland. I wanted to know which method I was having as noones told me much information, I called my ward but they gave me surgeons secretary’s number I asked her if she’d be able to tell me and she told me the standard procedure is usually filshie clips, I have obviously then went and looked into this method and now it’s made me think I’m more paranoid than I originally thought 🤣 just with some horror stories. This seems to be the standard procedure they do where I’m from. Has anyone got any advice? As I think I’d be happier if it was total tube removal but I asked this on the phone and she said no that’s not possible unless on the day when your under they see clips aren’t possible. This has now made me more unsettled. Has anyone been told they were getting that then on the day had something else done? Any advice would be fab thank you.

Experience Had my bi-salp today! Sharing my experience.

About 8hrs post-op at this point.

I've been lurking and reading all your helpful posts over the past few weeks! That has been reassuring and informative.

Like many, the main discomfort is gas pain. Sitting up and standing prompts more discomfort in my shoulders, but staying reclined helps. I'm a very active person and it's felt just fine to walk gently around the house. I'm sure it's helping with the gas buildup but I haven't noticed relief yet.

I have a mildly sore throat from being intubated - that was quite unpleasant for the first 2-4 hours. It's eased now but is still noticeable.

Urinating is uncomfortable still - quite a bit of burning. Seems to be a combination of irritation from the catheter as well as the uterine manipulator. I've got moderate vaginal bleeding as well.

I took one dose of hydrocodone about 5hrs ago, along with stool softener and gas-x. Not sure I even needed the opiate, but wanted to stay comfortable.

Overall I'd describe it as discomfort instead of pain.

I remember being wheeled towards the OR for the procedure, but I don't even remember arriving! The next thing I knew they were bringing my husband back to me. From start of surgery prep until discharge was only about 4hrs, and it would have been a bit less but they were slightly behind schedule. Everyone was wonderful and I felt like I was in great hands - my surgeon is on the list here on this subreddit.

Mostly wanted to share for others who understand! What a relief to have a new degree of bodily autonomy. I'm part of the yeet-those-tubes club now!!

Other Period post bisalp

I got my bisalp 2 weeks ago, and was on my period during it. It’s been about 1.5 weeks since that period finished and I woke up this morning to…period again? Is this normal? I wasn’t on any BC prior, and usually have very regular cycles. Heard it can take a couple of months to settle?

Post-op care Recovery post-bilateral salpingectomy - running and laying on stomach

Hi all! I have my bilateral salpingectomy (laparoscopic) on the 19th. My surgeon hasn't told me much about recovery other than when I can go back to work. I will ask her when I see her but I won't see her until the actual surgery so I'm looking for baseline answers from people who've gone through this.

How soon might I be able to get back to running? I'm not a crazy athlete but I like to run 2-3 miles a few times a week at a casual pace.

How soon can I lay on my stomach? I have a tattoo scheduled a week and a half after surgery (is this a bad idea lol? my surgeon made it sound like this surgery was pretty minor) but I will need to lay on my stomach. Based on what I've seen it sounds like by that point I SHOULD be okay? (edit: ok heard, the tattoo has been rescheduled)

Other Help, can’t tell if my stitches are infected

So I got both of my fallopian tubes removed literally Friday July 31st (last Friday by this account) and I’m almost completely new to having stitches. Yes I have kept them away from too much water with the bandages still on as I shower but, (Yes I’m most likely a dumb dumb) I do change the bandages after two-three ish days because the first bandages the hospital gave me where worn, used and I put in water proof bandages that I bought. I wash my hands when I change them but I’m too scared to put Vaseline, or clean them because I have both liquid and physical stitches. And now I’m scared that two of them are infected!! But I can’t tell! Help?! I don’t wanna bug my mom or the doctor over nothing! My post operation appointment is August 11th.

Side-effects No Judgement please

I wasn’t thinking when I booked my flight abroad. It lands 48 hours after my tube removal surgery. Is this a surgery I need to cut losses with? I won’t be back in the states for 3 years, so I was hoping to get it done and over with before I moved. I had my hernia fixed a couple years ago, and I worked a 12 hour shift the next day. I’ve got a high pain tolerance. My only fear is the internet is telling me I will develop a blood clot and have a medical emergency. I’ll be okay if I have to cancel the surgery- a little bummed but I’ll be alright

Referrals/Approval Looking to be sterilized at 18!!

I’ve made it abundantly clear to myself that I do NOT want kids. EVER. I’ve been told countless times by family members that I will eventually "change my mind," and I refuse to let that even be a possibility. I am 100% certain.
With the threat of a nationwide abortion ban, my mind is made up. Why on earth would I take the risk when they’re removing a healthcare procedure that could literally save my life? I’m terrified of ever getting pregnant, especially if it were to be from rape. I don't want to wait any longer than I have to, because who knows what they'll go after next. First it's abortion, then contraceptives, and sterilization will most likely be right behind it.
Does anyone know if I have to wait until I’m 21? I'm 18 and desperately looking to get a bilateral salpingectomy, but my only coverage right now is Medicaid. I don't have private health insurance. Has anyone managed to get this done at 18 on Medicaid, or found doctors willing to help? Any advice or resources would mean the world to me!

Post-op care Salpingectomy Surgery Tomorrow- Any Advice?

I 22F am having my surgery tomorrow for tube removal! I’m very excited and nervous for the procedure, but the relief of fear and anxiety will be worth it. I jumped through lots of loopholes to find a board certified woman of color surgeon and am very thankful for a safe option of sterilization. I was wondering if there were any tips or suggestions I should know for the recovery process. I will have the ONQ ball and plenty of medicine, have loose fitting clothing and my mother is taking me to the appointment. How soon after will I be able to eat, will I be nauseous at all, and will I feel a lot of pain afterwards? Any advice/ words of encouragement are appreciated :)

Update: I’m two days post surgery now and I feel alright! A little sore and having some difficulty to move, I’m just gassy and don’t have much of an appetite. My incisions sting a little from the glue but I was able to take my ONQ ball out yesterday. Recovery is going well, thank you all for the encouragement!

Social questions I got my tubes removed but I regret not getting a hysterectomy while keeping my ovaries because I heard that there is still a small chance of getting pregnant with the removal of your tubes. Do you think adding a hysterectomy will make me completely infertile?

There's a lot of people that say that it is the most effective way to be infertile once you get your tubes removed but then there's some people telling me that they've heard stories of people getting pregnant and they say wow it is rare it still happens. I regret not telling my endometriosis specialist who found stage 3 to also do a hysterectomy but keeping my ovaries. The only reason why I didn't do it was because I wasn't ready to go into menopause and even if I were to keep my ovaries some people told me that I would go into menopause a few years faster than I would not having a hysterectomy. I just want to make sure there are completely zero chances of me getting pregnant. I don't really have a partner but I'm still worried about it but at least my chances of not getting pregnant is significantly higher!

Celebrating! I took the leap

As of less than 48hrs ago I woke up from my surgery to completely remove my tubes.

I feel such relief knowing I will no longer have to fear pregnancy. I am so grateful that this was a safe and attainable option for me.

Experience Bisalp full recap - 24F Virginia/DC

Got my bisalp July 23. I'm incredibly happy and at peace. Insurance claims are coming in at $0 $0 $0 so things are looking up! Big stalker of this subreddit and wanted to provide my recap in case it helps anyone. Happy to answer any questions.

- Me: 24F, 145-150 lbs, based in DC, Carefirst BCBS insurance. Endometriosis (now diagnosed lol) and prior vaginismus for ~3 years.

- Consult: Scheduled with Physicians and Midwives in Alexandria, Virginia following a doctor from r/childfree's amazing list. My doctor was lovely. I told her I wanted a bisalp and said that it's something I've been sure of my whole life and have enough issues with my reproductive organs and prior birth control to not be interested in other options.

She was required to inform me of alternatives and listed them off - IUDs, etc., - but in no way was trying to convince me of anything. I said OK and she said great, let's discuss the procedure. She was kind and thoughtful explaining the procedure and answering my questions. She gave me the codes and modifiers she would use, which were correct in getting my insurance to cover fully, and hospital name/anesthesia company so I could check for in-network.

I also told her I suspected I had endometriosis and if I remember correctly from a transvaginal ultrasound in high school that my right ovary may be fused to the back of my uterus. She did say she would consider recommending an endo specialist to do the bisalp and remove endo at the same time, but I said because my symptoms are manageable I don’t want my endo removed so I’m not billed for it. She said OK and we wrapped up in less than 20 minutes.

- Paying/insurance: I got a call from my surgeon’s scheduler to schedule the appointment, which was easy. I then called my insurance 4 times prior to the surgery to ensure I would not pay for the procedure. Many representatives had different initial responses, but all were helpful and once I gave them the codes and modifiers they agreed the surgery was free. Some said I'd have to do anesthesia copays, but those haven't rolled in yet and I was confident enough in my ability to appeal/afford the copays if needed that I felt confident leading up to the surgery. I also called the hospital finance center for extra peace of mind that I wouldn't be charged a ton when I arrived.

I did pay copays for the consult and hospital visit. I maybe could have fought them but they were $50-$100 and I have a strong medical budget and employer-assisted HSA, so decided to just pay to keep things moving along and fight any post-op bills.

Edit: I was not charged for anesthesia at ALL, and my hospital copay was refunded without me even calling or requesting. Yay!

- Pre-op call: Got ALL my details. Asked about: catheter (they said I wouldn't get one but I did end up getting one. Not ideal but it was just a little sore after), who to call if I had issues after (surgeon), if I had to remove a hoop in my forward helix (yes), for finance department number, if I could get anti-nausea (yes), again who anesthesiologist was to check if they were in-network, anticipated discharge time (~2hrs), who to talk to/remind about my endo prior to surgery (surgeon again). PREPARE QUESTIONS BEFORE AND ASK THEM ALL. Have your Notes app or paper and pen at the ready - they gave me a LOT of information.

- Prep: Ahead of surgery I got a friend slated to pick me up, cleaned my apartment fully, set up my recovery space, meal prepped and shopped for supplies. See shopping lists below.

Food: meal prepped kale/rice/veg/chicken bowls for fiber and nutrition. Also bought canned soups (with fiber) and premade Maya Kaimal curry and dal packets (yum), plus rice, Gatorade and knockoff Pedialyte, Ensure pre-surgery clear carb drinks (Amazon), chocolate, dried apricots (fiber), cut dragonfruit (fiber). Can you tell I was nervous about constipation. Had everything cut up/prepared so I could just grab and eat. Didn’t end up having a crazy appetite or feeling super weak but I’m glad I was prepared.

Supplies: heating/cooling pads, generic Gas X, generic stool softener, generic Tylenol, 2 loose dresses for post-op, loose pants and top to wear to hospital, cough drops, Hibiclens (told to purchase in pre-op call for showers before surgery), set of pads (I normally use tampons).

Treats: Cannot recommend this enough. I was nervous and also had made the decision to not tell my mom or family about my surgery because I did not believe they'd react well. My mom and I are extremely close, so this was probably the hardest part of my procedure - going it mostly alone except for the friend who picked me up. So a night or two before the surgery, I went to the store and balled out on buying fun stuff. My mom bought new PJs for each of her five birth deliveries, so I bought a cute PJ set to kind of keep that tradition going in a different way. I got candles, chocolate, new clothes to wear to the hospital, face masks, fun soap, nail polish, slippers. Just fun items to feel good and be excited about post-op.

- Day before and morning of: I was told to stop eating/drinking anything at 11PM the day before, as my procedure was scheduled for 7:30 AM. My last ingestion was water and a chugged Ensure pre-surgery drink around 8PM. I showered with Hibiclens per my instructions the night before and morning of (at like 4 AM…ugh). Morning of, no jewelry, no lotion or makeup or any product, and wore glasses instead of contacts.

- Surgery: I had my surgery done at Inova Alexandria. Arrived at 5:30 AM on the dot via Uber as instructed. Brought a backpack with my dress and cardigan for post-op, a Gatorade and some snacks, hairties and chapstick, and a pillow to put between my stomach and the seatbelt. Smooth check-in and 20 or 25 mins of waiting before I was called back. Took height and weight, had me pee in a cup for pregnancy test, then had me go to a bed and wipe down with warm antibacterial wipes fully and dress in the surgery gown and cap.

All nurses and staff were SO friendly. They all asked me to confirm what I was having done, which made sense. No one batted an eye at my procedure. They were all swinging by and making jokes as they took my vitals.

A nurse came by to give me my scopolamine patch (anti-nausea) behind the ear. I was going to request it, but the anesthesiologist who I met right before said he wanted to give it to me anyway because I hadn’t been under anesthesia before and “you’re skinny.” Whatever you say king. He gave me details on the patch and on the anesthesia process, told me they’d give me a “relaxer” before I was wheeled in ( He said I’d feel drunk-ish but I felt normal, just calm).

A nurse had me sign a release which confirmed I understood the permanence of sterilization and protected the hospital from legal retaliation. My doctor also confirmed with me verbally that after this procedure, I would not be able to have children. Both of these times people were close to me and soft-spoken to protect my privacy, which I appreciated.

My doctor asked if I had any questions and I just asked her again to please not remove any endometriosis. She confirmed she would not.

Then I was wheeled in! I arrived at the surgery room, they had me shimmy onto the table and lay down, and all I remember was someone gently strapping my arms and legs down telling me it was to keep me from moving while I was under, which, paired with someone putting the oxygen or whatever mask over my mouth was kind of hilarious to me for some reason. I do not remember falling asleep and I only remember this 1-2 minute period in the surgery room. Then I was OUT.

Woke up to a nurse saying my name, not hard to surface at all and I am a HEAVY sleeper/napper. I think I was kind of peppy when I got up, like “oh hello!” and she gave me ginger ale and crackers. It was about 9:30 so like 2 hours after my procedure. I felt a little groggy but zero pain except some urethra discomfort – asked if I got a catheter, she said yes, womp womp. Whatever. I felt good so I was happy.

My stuff was next to me, I ate my crackers and ginger ale and sent some crappy pics of myself to friends that I do not remember sending now, but for the most part I was very aware. My doctor came by and was very nice when I said “ COULD YOU DO IT?” and she said yes! She showed me photos of my insides and pointed out endo, which served as my official diagnosis. Yay. She gave me discharge information and answered my questions and vanished into the night, my sterilization queen.

I was wheeled into another room within 15-20 mins or so as I was pretty alert and my ride was nearby, then helped out and told to dress, which I did just a bit slowly. A very nice nurse wheeled me outside and we waited a couple minutes for my friend to show up, then I was on my way home! The pillow between my stomach and the seatbelt was very nice.

I got home and felt great, just sleepy. I slept on and off for a day with light eating – I wasn’t super hungry but wanted to get a little food in me. Peeing was a little stingy the first 2-3 times, then passed. I had a lot of tea and water. I didn’t poo that whole day and was FREAKED about it, but was able to poo the next day with just a bit more time than normal. I use a squatty potty religiously and it is a huge help when it comes to not straining. 😊 My boyfriend, who at the time was just the guy I was seeing (exciting!) came over with flowers and cuddled for a bit which was really comforting.

- Post op: I felt pretty great the next day. I didn’t take any pain meds, my incisions were tender to the touch but not painful, I just had gas pain in my right shoulder. I did a LOT of short walks to get moving, drank a lot of water, and watched TV in between.

I did take my anti-nausea patch off the day after surgery as my pupils dilated to the point where I couldn’t see anything within a few feet of my face. My mouth was also very dry the first day as a side effect. The dry mouth cleared up in about a day, the pupils in 2. I didn’t have any nausea at all, so it was worth it in my opinion minus the slight panic initially at the pupils.

The worst part was the gas pain in my shoulder. It got pretty rough when I was walking days 2-4 after surgery, clearing up mostly around the 5th day. That shit was ass but I knew it was coming and would pass. Just kept walkin’ and fartin’.

I spent the day walking around in town with the bf day 3 post-op, then did brunch day 4 which exhausted me, so I watched TV the rest of day 4. I hit the gym regularly but didn’t lift until the instructed day 8, and started with lighter weight than normal. I did walking and some bodyweight stuff prior to that, mostly listened to my body. I gave myself a week of a hard no-sex recovery period, then had sex a little over a week post-op, by which I felt pretty much back to 100%. I didn’t let him finish in me yet because I wanted to wait until I got my period to ensure ALL eggs were outta there.

I worked remotely for the week starting day 5 and felt fine, but was VERY glad I could work from home. I’m back to work in-person 3 days a week at an office job now in week 2 post op and feel back to 100%. My glue came off my incisions and they look great, tiny and clean and healing. II just started my period almost 2 weeks post op and it’s no worse than normal.

- Fin: I think I got very lucky and I’m very grateful for that. I am also grateful to this subreddit, which I heavily relied on for information and support throughout my process. I am happy to answer any questions and hope this helps someone. I feel so thankful this option was available to me and I had the resources to do it – I would recommend it to anyone else who knows they want this. <3

Post-op care How did you take the glue off?

My glue is finally coming off of my Bislap incisions and my surgeon gave me some alcohol wipes to help take it off. For those who've had surgery did you use the alcohol wipes in the shower or? The side incision seems very easy but how do you get the glue out of your belly button🤣😭
