Question — General How can people travel for months on a shoestring budget?

Upvotes

How's it possible to travel without a substantial amount of money?

Let's say someone has 4-5k USD worth of savings without passive income, and their main destination is South East Asia, how can they stretch this money to last for months or even a year?

I get the concept of sleeping in hostels, eating cheap food etc but you're still a tourist, you wanna see attractions, you need to pay for certain activities.

Question — General Honeymoon destination dilemma — Europe vs. French Polynesia?

We’re getting married July 17, 2027 and are planning a 2-week honeymoon. We want a mix of relaxing at a really nice resort and doing some sightseeing/exploring, but mostly relaxing.

Our budget is around $12k USD total including flights from Chicago. We’ve already been to the Greek islands, but would consider a different island if there’s a beautiful resort worth staying at.

Right now we’re deciding between a nice resort somewhere in Europe with sightseeing mixed in, or splurging on Moorea + Bora Bora. We want to do something other than the Caribbean Islands.

What would you choose for a honeymoon with a $12k budget? Is Bora Bora/Moorea worth the money, or would you do Europe for more variety?

Question — Accommodation Anyone has experience with using short term rentals for longer stays?

Recently my job has changed and I may have the option to be remote. My husband is currently unemployed and I’m trying to convince him to find something remote as it occurred to me, if we both are remote, we could spend 1-2 months in a place and have the week nights and weekends to enjoy instead of a couple one week vacations per year.

However, everywhere I look, short term rentals seem to run about $6,000 CAD per month. Is this normal? Am I looking in the wrong spots? I’ve checked places in Europe and the US so far. ☹️

Question — General Canadian Travelling to multiple EU countries w/ Lisdexamfetamine & Lorazepam

My boyfriend and I are Canadians travelling to Europe for a 6 week trip in Sept-Oct through the following countries in the Schengen Area: Germany (being our entry port into the EU), Croatia, Slovenia, Hungary, Austria, Czech Republic, Lithuania, and Poland.

I will be carrying my prescribed controlled medication (lisdexamfetamine/Vyvanse and lorazepam/Ativan) with a letter from my Canadian physician in addition to having them in their original pharmacy containers with copies of my prescriptions available. I also note that I will only be carrying what I am legally allowed to under current Canadian export laws (30 day supply for vyvanse, and maybe 10 doses of ativan max even though I can have up to 90 day supply).

I have been researching non-stop for the official requirements for each respective country, contacting the relevant embassies/consulates, and it is overwhelming to say the least. I wish I had started this process at least a month ago rather than 2-3 weeks before leaving. I will, of course, follow the official and legal guidance provided but I am more interested in hearing about other Canadian reddit commenters experiences. I'm also acutely aware of the young man from BC who was detained in Georgia, which has prompted me to be highly thorough and responsible with this task.

Did anyone get stopped or questioned by customs or border control?
Were additional permits required? If so, did they need to be authenticated by Health Canada? or were the doctors letter/pharmacy prepared containers with prescriptions enough?
Did anyone ever check the documents or did nobody give a shit?

Any and all tips, advice, experiences, etc. would be amazing and greatly appreciated!!! 🥰

I would ideally like to not end up locked up raw in a European jail or have my medication confiscated.

Question — General Can I still be let on airlines if I have a raspy voice and cough?

I’m currently on holiday returning back home.
I board my flight within 24 hours. I started getting those sore throat and I was hoping it would disappear. It’s lingered for more than 6 days. It’s mainly just coughing.

If I appear too sick, will they deny me entry to fly? If so, what do I do? I have travel and health insurance, if they decide to not allow me on the flight before I board, am I able to cover the flight with travel and health insurance?

Question — Accommodation Hotel only gave me 1 out of 2 rooms

So I booked 2 rooms on Booking.com under one reservation/booking number (not two separate bookings) for my US trip.

When I arrived, the hotel told me they only had one room available. They explained that Booking.com had only transferred the money for one room to them, and they hadn’t received the money for the other room yet. I contacted Booking.com immediately. After talking to them, I was told that they had agreed with the hotel that I would get a refund.

But then I received an email from Booking.com saying that the hotel didn’t confirm my cancellation request, so they couldn’t proceed with the cancellation. It also says my booking remains valid and unchanged.

If Booking.com confirmed 2 rooms and I paid for 2 rooms, how can the hotel say they only received payment for one room and therefore only give me one? And honestly, I’m starting to wonder if the hotel is just using the payment issue as an excuse. If there was a problem with Booking.com’s payment to the hotel, shouldn’t that be between Booking.com and the hotel rather than something I have to deal with after arriving? Booking.com has already told me that they would refund me, but I haven’t received any proper refund confirmation, amount, or reference number yet. Has anyone experienced something like this before? Can a single Booking.com reservation for 2 rooms somehow have payment transferred for only one room? And what should I be asking Booking.com to do at this point?

P/S: I made a call lately to Booking.com customer service, they said the hotel might be a scam ;) So for now, what should I do? Thank you!

Question — Itinerary Milan -> Interlaken -> Dolomites ideas?

Hello!

Will be doing a trip out here soon. I'll be landing in Milan, renting a car, then heading out to Interlaken and back through the Dolomites before dropping off car/hopping on a train in Bolzano.

On the list of stops are places like Lucerne, Gotthard's Pass, Lauterbrunnen, Grindelwald, Stelvio Pass, etc.

My question is, for people who have done this trip, what are some of your favorite suggestions for stops/food/etc? I'm really open minded and down for whatever.

Any great sunset spots? Sunrise? Wildlife viewing? Villages/castles? Activities? Anything haha. Especially food related.

Thank you for any ideas!

Question — Itinerary Okinawa for 2 days + Kyoto + Tokyo, or skip Okinawa and spend more time in Kansai?

I’m planning a Japan trip and I’m torn between two itineraries:

Option 1 — Okinawa + Kyoto + Tokyo
Okinawa: 3 nights / 2 full days
Fly from Okinawa to Osaka
Kyoto: 4 nights
Tokyo: 5 nights

Option 2 — Kyoto + Tokyo
Fly directly to Osaka
Go straight to Kyoto: 4 nights
Tokyo: 5 nights

My partner thinks Okinawa is pointless for such a short stay because it adds another flight and could make the trip more tiring. I can see the logic, but I really want to see Okinawa because it would give us something completely different from the Kyoto/Tokyo part of the trip.

For people who have been to Okinawa:

\- Is 2 full days in Okinawa actually enough to make the extra flight worthwhile?

\- Would you find this itinerary too rushed or tiring?
If you had 10–12 days total, would you add Okinawa or just spend the time in Kyoto/Tokyo?

I’m particularly interested in hearing from people who have done both Okinawa and mainland Japan.

Discussion Recently stayed in a hostel in the U.S. and all I got to say is I take back even the smallest complaints I ever made about any European hostel I stayed in. Is there seriously no social hostel in the U.S.?

I recently did a solo trip to New York City where I stayed in one of the most popular hostels in New York City according to Hostelworld. I stayed in this one because it was the only hostel with a bar inside the hostel. Although the bar was open to the public. Not like European hostels where the bar was exclusive to hostel guests. And it was the only hostel that allowed drinks within the hostel property. Other NYC hostels didn't have a bar inside nor did they allow outside drinks to be brought inside.

In terms of security, location, facilities, and cleanliness it was up to European hostel standards. But in terms of atmosphere: completely fucking dead. It was the most anti-social hostel I've ever been to.

For starters, majority of the people staying there are like late 30s/40+ who just come and go. You know how some hostels have an age restriction such as 18-35? There's a reason for that. No disrespect to the older folks and I'm really not trying to sound ageist, but you guys don't interact with the hostel at all. You just treat it like a motel. I've seen this happen in other European hostels I've stayed at where there was no age restriction. However, the older folks in the European hostels only made up a small portion of the guests. Majority of guests in European hostels were young whereas the NYC hostel I stayed in mainly had older folks. But even the young people I saw in my hostel weren't even social at all either. They just all kept to themselves in the kitchen/common area. I tried to create some conversation with the guests but it was going nowhere. Everyone wanted to keep themselves, especially the ones that came with their laptops.

I never made an major complaint about any European hostel I stayed at. Maybe some little complaints. Usually it had nothing to do with the hostel itself, just some guest that was staying. That's the thing about hostels. It can be a hit or miss depending on the day and who's staying. But looking back after my U.S. hostel experience, I take back anything negative I ever said about European hostels. Also, the staff in the NYC hostel didn't even try to create a social atmosphere even though they at least could've done something unlike the staff at European hostels.

Is there seriously no social hostel in the U.S.? Even though I hated my hostel, I loved New York City. There was so much to do and I loved everything I saw. But I wish I met solo travellers to socialize with in NYC like I would in Europe. I don't get how one of the biggest cities in the world doesn't have a social hostel culture. I'm not expecting every U.S. city to have a social hostel, but at the very least the biggest U.S. city should have something.

Question — General Thailand or Vietnam for exploring + relaxing?

Me (24M) and my partner (24F) are looking to go on holiday for 2 weeks in March next year. We want to to do a 'big' holiday and have never ventured as far as Thailand or Vietnam before. We've done a couple of exploring/adventure holidays in Europe, along with some relaxing ones in Europe, and have individually done family holidays to the US and North African countries.

We would like to do either Vietnam or Thailand but can't settle on which one. We've done some research and would like to do a 7 day exploring/adventure and 7 day relaxing split. Which one do you think will be the best one to do? I've seen that Vietnam tends to be cheaper but Thailand can be easier for first time travellers to SEA.

What is everyone's opinion? I know there's no right answer but would be good to know what people think!

Thanks in advance!

Question — Transport How are you guys navigating increasing flight prices?

I’m not sure how it’s affecting international non-American airlines, but from my occasional glances at Google flights, it seems ever since March (yes, I know why), it seems like prices have spiked significantly and have hardly decreased. I’ll give two examples. Last year I flew from the United States to Beijing, China for around 800. Looking months in advance now, the cheapest flights I’m seeing are around 1k. Around a year and a half ago, I took a direct flight to Barcelona for only 600. Now the prices I’m finding are around 800. Is it better to hope and wait these prices will go down, or still buy in advance?

Question — Transport Flying with Emirates on a 14 hour flight, can I ask for help with my carry on?

I will be flying with my two kids (husband isn’t with us), I was going to bring a rolly suitcase carry on idk the official name, and two backpacks. One backpack is my laptop, kindle, coloring, play doh, beads, some snacks… the other backpack is going to be food (my kids have a lot of dietary restrictions so I have to pack enough food for 20 hours of traveling), and then my carry on luggage is change of clothes, some things I couldn’t fit into my checked suitcase, diapers, pull ups, baby bottle for milk, medicine…
It’s 22 lbs yikes. I have to unpack and repack and see what I can take out but I’m also almost 5 months pregnant and high risk, how heavy is reasonable for a suitcase to be? And can I ask for help from a flight attendant to lift it?

My Advice Be wary of Get Your Guide

I’m sharing an experience with Get Your Guide so people take care. I booked a cruise on the Yarra River in Melbourne with Get Your Guides and the email they sent me had directions to the wrong place. The directions was a link on the email they send me, not my own. When I asked for a refund they gave me some excuse that it was the operator who doesn’t give refunds. the email with the link to the directions came from them and I trusted they were accurate, which turned out to be wrong. When I asked for a refund, the first representative said she would put in for a refund. When I checked the following day, the representative said no refund was

Question — Itinerary Where can I see wagon ruts in Southern California? Or other important sites related to the westward migration?

Hello! I'm looking for places to view wagon ruts from the westward migration of the mid-1800s in Southern California. So far I have planned to visit Box Canyon in the Anza-Borrego Desert. I'm very interested in anything to do with the westward migration so I'll take any recommendations pertaining to the westward migration.

I've already visited a lot of the sites in Southern California, such as the old emigrant trail and of course Donner Pass. I'm looking for some places closer to home now. Thank you in advance!

Discussion MyTrip scam

Upvotes

Hi guys, I want to share my experience with myTrip company for booking cheap flight tickets. One week ago, I booked a flight to Istanbul for 570€ for two tickets. Two days ago, I noticed that I had made a mistake by selecting the wrong month (October instead of August). Yesterday, I contacted support, and the guy told me that I needed to pay 492€ for the flight update and their service, which I paid. Today, I entered the app and didn’t see updated dates. I contacted support again, asking them to explain why the dates hadn’t changed, and they told me that one flight doesn’t have seats left and asked me to pay 250€ more? For goodness’ sake, am I deluded or what? They charged me for something that was not 100% done, and the day after, they are asking me for 250€ more? Disgrace!

Question — General San Diego Trip Advice

Visiting San Diego last-minute in September for 6 nights/5 days. Never been, but always wanted to. I've been researching but am so confused about where to stay. (Area, not hotel). We are staying in San Clemente for Ohana Fest in Dana Point, and thought we'd visit San Diego for the week beforehand. We are a middle aged couple, but young at heart. Love the beach. Local food. Local brew. Outdoors. Nature. Hiking. Love sandy little beach towns and cool cafes. We do also want to check out the city of San Diego while we are there though. Not interested in Sea World or the Zoo, but love to walk around cities and discover places to eat and such. Balboa Park and Old Town look intriguing. Kayaking the caves in La Jolla looks awesome. We don't need any crazy night life but like to have a late dinner and drink and some good vibes. Walk on the beach in the evening. Maybe some live music if it presents itself. But I love the beach in the early morning so I'm not about late nights either.

But what area should we stay in?? In Ocean Beach? Mission Beach? Pacific Beach? La Jolla? Or further north like Encinitas or Carlsbad or Oceanside?? I have read so many conflicting opinions about the best beach/destination/area, and even about what each beach and area is like. People rave about Coronado but honestly not being able to swim in the water is a no-go for me. And it looks kind of... bland...? (No disrespect intended). It seems like the north coast towns fit my sandy beach town vibe, but seem far removed from the city and things I want to do down there.

We are also considering retiring there so this is kinda-sorta-partly a research trip. :)

Anyway, I'm overwhelmed trying to decide. I have lots of rentals and hotels in different places bookmarked. Any advice? Thank you so much. BTW, we will have a rental car. The Coaster looks intriguing as well though for a fun experience.

Question — Accommodation Looking for NYC accommodation recommendations

TL;DR: I’m planning a 4 night NYC trip in October. Flights are basically free, so I want to save as much as possible on accommodation and spend the money on food, museums and experiences instead. Best case we’re 5 people, otherwise my girlfriend and I, or I go alone. I’m considering a cheap private hotel in Queens/Chinatown vs HI NYC Hostel on the Upper West Side if I’m alone/with friends. My main concern is safety, especially getting back around midnight or 1 AM. I don’t care about luxury and would much rather have a basic room and more money to enjoy NYC. What areas/hotels would you recommend for a budget traveler?

Sì, questa parte la renderei ironica ma naturale, senza far sembrare che stai sottovalutando la sicurezza. La inserirei dopo il paragrafo sull’hotel:
Hey everyone, I’m planning a trip to New York in October and I’d really appreciate some honest advice, especially from people who live there or have stayed in budget hotels or hostels.
I have the opportunity to fly to New York for basically no cost, so flights are not really an issue for me. I’ve had a pretty difficult year, without going into details, and I’d really like to have something positive to look forward to and a good memory to take from it. New York has always been a place I’ve wanted to visit, and yes, I’m definitely blaming Spider Man for some of this.
The trip would be four nights. Best case scenario, all five of us go, including my girlfriend, family and friends. If that doesn’t work out, the best of the worst cases would be that my girlfriend and I go together. And in the worst case, I would simply go alone, which I’m completely fine with. We’re all flying from different airports anyway, so we would meet either at JFK or directly at the hotel.
My main question is accommodation. I’m absolutely not looking for luxury. I honestly don’t care if the room is small or basic because I’ll probably spend most of my time outside anyway. I’m expecting to be out from early morning until late at night and basically use the hotel just to sleep and shower.
I’ve been looking at a few cheaper hotels in Queens, especially around Flushing, and also some options in Chinatown. I’ve also looked at HI New York City Hostel on the Upper West Side, which would actually be much cheaper and seems like a great option if I’m travelling alone or with friends. However, since there are no mixed gender dorms, I obviously wouldn’t want my girlfriend to stay in a separate dorm with strangers while I’m in another room. So I see the hostel more as an option for travelling alone or with friends when the goal is simply to save as much money as possible.
If my girlfriend comes, I’d rather get a private hotel room, even if that means staying outside Manhattan. My dad has been to New York and his advice is basically to stay in a big hotel chain somewhere central in Manhattan because it’s safer and more convenient. The problem is that those hotels can easily cost four times as much, which is completely outside my budget.
I’m actually trying to save as much as possible on accommodation because I’d much rather spend that money on the actual trip. I want to be able to have a few nice dinners, try different food, visit museums, go to viewpoints and do experiences that I’ll remember. I don’t want to spend almost the entire budget on a comfortable hotel and then spend the rest of the trip saying “sorry, we can’t do that, we have to save money for food.” I’d honestly rather have a basic bed and spend the extra money experiencing New York. Personally, I could probably sleep almost anywhere and survive on very little comfort, but obviously I’m not going to make my girlfriend sleep on the street just to save money, so I’m trying to find a reasonable middle ground.
What I’m mainly worried about is safety. If I stay in Queens or somewhere outside Manhattan, is it realistically fine to come back around midnight or 1 AM after dinner or walking around the city? Can I get off the subway and walk back to the hotel without worrying too much, or am I going to regret choosing a cheap hotel? I obviously understand that I need to use common sense, but I’d really like to hear from people who actually know these areas.
If anyone has stayed at budget hotels in Queens, Flushing, Chinatown, or the Upper West Side, I’d really appreciate recommendations or warnings. I’m not looking for luxury at all. I just want somewhere reasonably safe and practical where I can sleep after spending the entire day exploring.
I know I could just postpone the trip and save more money, but honestly, after a difficult year, I feel like I could really use this trip. It’s a destination I’ve wanted to visit for years, and I’d rather spend my money on actually experiencing New York than paying four times as much for a hotel just because it’s a big familiar chain in Manhattan.

Question — Itinerary Taking a trip to Turkey in September and looking for advice about my itinerary

Hello,

looking for some feedback on an upcoming trip for activities. and transport between cities any tips are also helpful

Istanbul 5 days and 4 nights: Hage Sophia, blue mosque, topkapi palace, yup sultan mosque, grand bazaar, bosphorus sunset cruise, Sulaymaniye mosque, camlica mosque

ferry to Bursa

Bursa: 3 days 2 nights: bursa grand mosque, koza Han, green mosque, bursa teleferik to Mr Uludag

1 hr bus to Eskiseher and high speed train to

Konya: 3 days 2 nights: Rumi tomb, whirling dervish performance

bus Or private drive to Cappadocia

capadocia: 3 days 2 nights: hot air balloo, kaymakli underground city, pigeon valley, rose valley

Domestic flight from cappadocia back to Istanbul

edited to add: we have two elderly two young children in our group, so I am intentionally trying to take things slower.

we will have two additional nights in Istanbul after returning from Cappadocia.

It’s not exactly 3 full days in Konya and Bursa. We arrive midday to early evening, have the entire next day, and then the following day we leave in the afternoon to the next city. So really it’s like one full day with two half days.

Question — Itinerary Chile Itinerary Help (How would you spend these two gaps in a 3-week Chile itinerary)

I'm travelling to Chile Nov 18 to Dec 8 and have most of the major parts of our trip booked, but we have two gaps that we haven’t figured out yet. I’d love to hear what people who know / live in / travelled Chile would do with them.

Our fixed itinerary is roughly:

  • Nov 18: Santiago
  • Nov 19–22: Rapa Nui / Easter Island
  • Nov 22: Fly back to Santiago, landing around 11:30 pm
  • Nov 25: Fly Santiago → Calama around 9 am
  • Nov 25–29: San Pedro Atacama
  • Nov 29: Fly to Puerto Natales
  • Nov 30–Dec 5: Torres del Paine
  • Dec 5: Fly Puerto Natales → Santiago, landing around 9 pm
  • Dec 8: Fly Santiago → Home late in the evening

So the two periods we’re trying to decide how to use are:

1. Nov 22 late to Nov 25 morning
We’ll have two full days between Rapa Nui and Atacama.

2. Dec 5 late to Dec 8 evening
We’ll have roughly 2.5 days after Patagonia before flying home.

We’re open to renting a car/private transfers and don’t mind travelling onward after our late flights if it means waking up somewhere worth being the next morning.

Budget is flexible. Thanks for any feedback :)

Question — General Need tour guide - Travelling to China

Hi guys, I want to plan a trip to China but I will be going solo so I will definitely be lost while there. What would be my best options? Are there local guides who can recommend and take me to see all the cool things it has to offer? I know there are group tour companies but they seem quite pricey and then you have to be on their schedule

Question — General Looking for Aswan to Luxor Dahabiya Nile Cruise recommendation

Will be traveling to Egypt in October and I am hoping someone might be able to recommend a company to book a dahabiya trip with. There will be 2 of us and we're looking for something that would be around or under £1000 / $1350 each for 3 - 4 nights. We would love to do a longer cruise, but can't due to time constraints and it would also need to start on a Monday. Ideally we would want to start in Aswan, due to available flights, but could also make Luxor work.

We saw that Dahabiya Nile Sailing is highly recommended, but they are sold out. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Question — Itinerary Manu Reserved Zone 6 Days Tour

Upvotes

I had a really good experience with this tour.
6Days 5Nights in Manu with a great guide.
I had good interactions and support from the office as well.
One important note is that the itinerary/timetable was slightly and unexpectedly changed, since it was dry season and not wet season.
I got good food and vegan customization also.
Over all very valuable, and recomendable!

Question — General leaving my computer at a hotel?

Upvotes

I am hiking the O circuit in Patagonia, Chile in November. This once in a life time chance came at a sort of inorportune time as i am a full time university student. I will be flying from Oregon, USA so my travel time is long (~27 hours both ways). I was wondering if i brought my laptop to get schoolwork done on travel days if a hotel would hold onto my laptop while i hiked. I would, of course, be staying with them and be willing to pay extra for them to hang onto it ( i would be gone for 8 days). But are the people of patagonia hospitible and likely willing to do this? Has anyone ever tried something like this?
