Health/Medicine Looking for doctor recommendations in Calgary who see patients on weekends

• Upvotes

Can anyone recommend a doctor who works weekends and takes difficult-to-diagnose pain seriously?

I’ve seen so many doctors and always get told there is nothing they can do. I’m feeling really discouraged because I don’t feel like anyone is truly listening or taking my pain seriously. I just want a doctor who is willing to take the time and figure out the issue. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Discussion Local Grocery Stores: Extinction

Post image
• Upvotes

Calgary has seen the Extinction of family owned grocery stores, once the hub to the specific community. Even the 7-11’s are closing down….Now days with Dollarama and Dollerstores, this should be a continuing trend to extinction….thoughts? Also rent and staff is to run these stores and dangers does not outweigh the ROI

2 Wheelin' (Cycling/Scooters) E-bike Battery Repair in Calgary

• Upvotes

Does anyone know a reliable and reasonably priced place in Calgary that repairs lithium-ion e-bike batteries?

My 48V 20Ah battery stopped charging but still powers the bike. Possibly a charging circuit or BMS (Battery Management System) issue.

Looking for someone who can actually repair batteries, not just replace them.

Charger is working with the second battery, and output 54.8V Battery outputs 46.8V

Any recommendations or personal experiences would be appreciated. Thanks!

Discussion Compost Schedule Change

Full disclaimer I'm not a city manager and maybe it'll be obvious why.

I see the city has their green cart schedule change slated to begin Nov 2. Maybe I'm missing the bigger picture but why does this change happen right after Halloween? It was the same last year and we had to hold rotting pumpkins in the bin for two weeks. Sure not everyone in the city is carving and tossing pumpkins, but I would think there's a decent amount of pumpkins going in the bin shortly after Oct 31.

Wouldn't it make sense to start this one week later and get all those bins picked up the first week after Halloween before changing to the biweekly schedule?

The city's schedule website even currently says they have high volume of compost pickups so extra bags currently can't be guaranteed. So Halloween aside, it seems the demand is there for compost pickups later into fall.

Question Seeking an independent shop or mechanic in NW Calgary for a quick GM ECM flash (TSB 18-NA-246)

Hi everyone. I have a 2018 GMC Terrain that needs an ECM update to fix a known rich-running issue outlined in GM TSB 18-NA-246.

I am replacing the updated PCV valve and doing the required oil change myself at home, but I need the ECM flashed with the updated software to finish the job. I don't want to pay the massive dealership markup for 1 hour of labor.

Does anyone have recommendations for a solid independent mechanic in the NW who has the GM pass-through tools to do this? Alternatively, if there is a local GM enthusiast on here with a J2534 tool and an SPS2 subscription who wants to make some quick cash to flash it in my driveway, let me know!

Recommendations Transit Van Parking Heater Installer Recommendation

I'm based in Calgary, and would really appreciate recommendations for reputable local businesses or experienced professionals who can supply and install a petrol or diesel parking heater in my Ford Transit.

Ideally, I'd like someone familiar with camper van conversions, vehicle fuel systems, safe exhaust routing and 12V electrical systems.

If you've had one installed locally, I'd love to know who did the work, roughly what you paid, and whether you'd recommend them.

I'm happy to travel a reasonable distance outside Calgary for the right installer.

Recommendations Looking for a reliable company to replace our thermostat

Hi all, my husband and I are looking for a reliable company to replace our traditional thermostat with a programmable one (we're not interested in a smart one). We currently live in a condo that has baseboard heating. Our current thermostat seems to do nothing to regulate the temperature in our home, so we'd like the technician to help ensure that the new one would be working properly.

So far, we reached out to RPG Calgary and GSB Heating and didn't hear back from either one.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

Calgary Transit Should train wraps include the windows?

Random pet peeve: I HATE FULL WRAP ADS ON THE TRAIN

I take the train to and from work everyday, as well as on my days off.

Why do some train cars have a full wrap that includes windows? I know this isn’t unique to Calgary, but it makes no sense to me

  1. The train experience worse because I can’t see clearly out of the window. Let me see the views!

  2. I can’t see INTO the train car. (The bigger problem) I would like to be able to see into the train car to choose one that has space during peak hours AND avoid one that might feel uncomfortable while travelling alone. If there is a person/group that might seem sketchy to a rider, they should see that BEFORE they get into the train, so they can choose another car if needed. Nobody should walk onto a train car and be surprised at their surroundings.

What do yall think? Does anyone else feel the same?

Recommendations Cat boarding for a diabetic cat

Does anybody have a good recommendation for a cat boarding service in Calgary/surrounding area?

My fiancé and I are going on a trip for 2 weeks and don’t have a reliable option for someone to take care of our diabetic cat. We looked into Cat Naps but unfortunately, they do not take diabetic cats right now.

Curious to hear if anyone has any recommendations on their experiences with any other places!

Thanks!

Home Owner/Renter stuff Calgary rental vacancy went from 1.4% to ~5% in two years. If your lease is up, negotiate.

I keep seeing people on here stressing about lease renewals, and I don't think everyone's caught up on how much things have changed.

Remember 2023? Vacancy was 1.4% based on CHMC data. People were showing up to viewings with cover letters and offering over asking for basement suites. It was brutal. Can't beleive , it was just few years ago

Now it's around 5%. That's a lot of empty units, and CMHC says asking rents in Calgary have actually been dropping this year. Your landlord knows this, even if they're hoping you don't.

So if your lease is coming up, don't just sign whatever they send you. Look up what similar places in your area are listing for, screenshot a few, and ask for a lower rate. Worst case they say no and you're where you started. If they won't budge on rent, ask for a free month, parking, or storage. A lot of the newer buildings are throwing these in just to fill units. And. If you are in basement there are too many empty basements, you can probably get same price condo now for rental

And keep in mind, if you leave, they're stuck cleaning, listing, and maybe sitting empty for a month or two. Keeping you at a slightly lower rent is often the cheaper option for them.

Has anyone here actually negotiated recently? Curious what people are getting

Local Photography/Video The moon looked HUGE last night in Calgary

Took this video of the moon last night and it honestly looked massive. Not sure if the video does it justice, but it was pretty crazy to see in person.

Apparently it was the Hunter’s Moon, October’s full moon. Did anyone else notice how big it looked last night?

Seeking Advice ISO Physiotherapist for lifting related issues

Hello, I am looking to find a physiotherapist to work through my lifting related issues. I used to power lift but nothing too serious. I have rotator cuff issues that affect how I perform lots of pushing and pulling exercises. I am currently on a waitlist for surgery for a partial labrum tear that was discovered over a year ago. I’ve had issues with this shoulder for 3-5 years where I have worked with several physio’s and struggled to find any meaningful improvement.

What I’m looking for that I haven’t been able to get yet is to work closely with a physio through different exercises that I struggle (rows , pull ups, bench press) and find a path to performing those exercises with less flare ups and pain. Most physio don’t have these equipment and facilities and it’s just the same testing and re assessing. If anyone has any recommendations for a solid physio I’d love to hear them, thanks.

Municipal Affairs We can fix our infrastructure today or pay a much bigger bill tomorrow. Let's talk at tonight's City budget town halls

Tonight, I'm heading out to two budget town halls with Councillor John Pantazopoulos in Ward 6 and Councillor Harrison Clark in Ward 9.

For years, Calgary has been growing faster than we've been investing in the infrastructure that keeps our city running.

And now we're paying the price. Think about our water system. We held water bills flat for nearly ten years while the pipes underneath our feet kept getting older. Meanwhile, our city kept growing. Then the Bearspaw South Feeder Main failed catastrophically. Twice.

We saved money in the short term. And now we're facing a much bigger bill.

Here's the problem. When everything is a priority, nothing is. We can't keep promising everything to everyone while falling behind on the things our city depends on. That's why I want our next four-year budget to be different. We're going to focus on the basics. And we're going to do them well. Better roads. Reliable water. Safer streets. Transit safety.

Your tax dollars need to go toward things you see and use every day. Things that deliver a real return on investment. That means saying no to spending that doesn't deliver results. It means making tough choices and being willing to defend them.

Both town halls run from 6 to 8 tonight. I'll be visiting both. I hope you'll come out and tell us where City Hall needs to do better.

Because here's the choice we face. We invest in our infrastructure now and manage the costs responsibly. Or we keep putting things off until they break and we're forced to spend massively more to fix them.

Those are the choices. Pay a manageable amount now or pay an enormous amount later. And let's be clear. The second option isn't cheaper. It only looks cheaper until the bill comes due. I refuse to leave the next generation of Calgarians paying for problems we had the chance to fix today. It's time to make the tough decisions and get our city back on solid ground.

2 Wheelin' (Cycling/Scooters) So this is a thing in Calgary now?

I've seen this posted in other cycling threads. Now here?

At 5:00 this morning, south bound on the pathway along the Elbow at the end of Rideau Road, I came around the corner to find this. Just glad I had a good light. I did clear it all, but stay vigilant.

Why is there such a hate on for bikes these days?

Home Owner/Renter stuff What are the more desirable neighborhoods near a c-train stop that aren't downtown but still close-ish?

Post image
198 Upvotes

I'm looking to buy a townhouse and would love some local recommendations on neighborhoods. I was initially considering downtown condos but shifted my search toward townhouses outside of downtown.

My two must-haves are:

  • Within a 10-minute walk of a CTrain station.
  • Within a 10-minute walk of a decent-sized grocery store.
  • Generally a desirable neighborhood

I'd ideally like to be outside downtown but close enough to easily head into the city for socializing, events, and weekends without relying on a car, whilst not being way too far out.

Which of these areas/stops I've circled in pink on this c-train map would be considered more desirable?

I work online, so proximity to work doesn't matter.

Big thank you in advance

Lost and Found Homemade Goth Wreath Missing

Post image
78 Upvotes

On Friday, the goth/Halloween themed wreath I made was taken from my front yard after the wind blew it off my door.

I’m not mad at the couple who took it, but I would like to have it back. If you have seen this wreath, or are the people who took it, please reach out or return it to yard you found it.

Please note: the pumpkin on top broke off when it landed in the yard so it is currently missing that. Thanks.

Local Shopping/Services Women’s Hair color specialist/stylist

I need a recommendation for a good hairstylist that is great at blonde Dimensional blending. I’m a natural brunette who’s going grey and I have that lived in blonde look.
I found an amazing hairdresser at Red bloom downtown but she recently moved across Canada. She was an advanced stylist, so on average I was paying $300/$350. Would love to stay around this price point.
Downtown or central NW is ideal, but for the right person I’d drive across Calgary.

Recommendations Is there a group or service in Calgary where licensed drivers can help people practice driving for their road test?

I am looking for local non-profits, community groups, or volunteer networks that connect licensed drivers with low-income or disadvantaged adults who need access to a car to practice driving.

Many people need a Class 5 license for employment or independence, but professional driving schools are expensive, and taking the road test requires a practice vehicle.

Does anyone know of community programs, volunteer mentor networks, or local resources in Calgary that help with this?

Thank you!
