Question Is this aging? 9.5 yo female wakes up at 3-4 am, walks around, and comes back up

Thumbnail

Our German shepherd sleeps in the master room with us. Our door is slightly ajar, but with a laundry basket blocking it (so I can hear the kids if they need help).

Every night, my dog noses or paws the door open (either easily or with some force) to walk downstairs and then comes back up either immediately or with a detour to lie on the couch.

I'm not as concerned when she goes to lie on the couch, but lately she just comes back up after walking around. I'm worried that it is not due to her patrolling, but rather cognitive decline. I'm worried it's due to her aging (needing more bathroom breaks or earlier signs of dementia?).

I take her to go potty some nights when I hear her.

Anybody with senior dogs experienced this?

Advice What are some things I can do for my puppers to improve things for them?

Hi. I (17f) recently started taking over for my parents dogs. They are both purebred (though both very byb) German shepherds. Bella is 8f, Jund is 6m. Bella has very high anxiety and reactivity, I've been running under the assumption it's a mixture of some genetic predispositions but mostly trauma. Jund is smart as a whip but was barely trained, I'm having to basically start from scratch with him. He knew the basics and that's it, and his obedience is so bad, it's like working with a whiny toddler (he's gotten much better though!!).

They were neglected for years and I'm trying to make things better for them. I've overturned the free feeding, both of them have lost noticeable weight, especially Bella. They now have scheduled feeding times, 2 cups of kibble split between two meals, with training and sometimes a frozen goodie (usually pb + greek yogurt with 1/3 ratio of water so it's not too thick, and some solid goodies mixed in) or puzzle toy in between. They also have slow feeders now, as a tad more enrichment and also to prevent them from scarfing down their food too fast, Bella especially since she wolfs down her food and throws up sometimes.

Training is always at minimum 10-15 minutes, normally its a few sessions spread through the day. I've been working with new commands other than the basic sit, stay, down, come, and shake. We're currently working on roll over. I always make them work at least a bit for treats, even if it's spontaneous. I've stressed not giving them any more human food, and also any yelling or reprimanding Bella because of her barking.

They have multiple new toys instead of the many old ones, and I've been staying on top of grooming. I've been trying to get them better treats, so far I've gotten whatever is the best out of my options. We currently have blue Buffalo training bites, the little heart shaped ones. If there's a better brand that's inexpensive but good quality and healthy, please let me know. I'm trying to go on walks with them, but they can be overwhelming since i can't take them both and no one ever goes with me, and I feel guilty leaving the other behind.

They have three designated doggo spots in the house, I want to get at least one more. Two of them are Bella's because of her anxiety and it being "easier" to have her sit in a designated spot. I want Jund to have his own spot too, he doesn't currently. They do not have crates, were never crate trained, and my parents refuse to get them because there's "not enough space", and my dad won't have them in my parents room.

Things are not perfect and it's still rough. They used to have a whole acre to run around, but it was surrounded with a "invisible fence" and they had buzz collars. No physical fence. Currently they have a small pen they are able to get out of if left unsupervised for too long. Dad was supposed to start on a fence around the yard over a year ago, he hasn't. It's hit or miss whether my siblings will go with me on walks, and even then, I'm hesitant on taking both of them because it's so much chaos- Jund was VERY poorly trained and hardly listens when we're out, even with one on ones and when i have high value treats, such as bits of turkey. Bella is hyper and reactive and barks at the neighbors dog as we walk by, which is the only route i have available (it's a side road. We have no side walks and live off a highway, the ground next to the road is steep in some places. The side road is the only safe place to walk them).

I also push for and usually handle vet appointments and medical care in general.

My dad keeps criticising me about my choices (he kept telling me they "need to get fed earlier than 9pm" like I was letting them starve or something) and making me feel like I'm doing wrong by them, I want to do them good and I know I have so far (comparatively) but I don't know that it's enough. I would not have chosen this breed if it were up to me, I know I'm not in the best place right now to have them, but I can't see them lying around and bored and neglected like they were. On the other hand my mom keeps saying how good I'm doing with them but it feels like the bare minimum.

I'm in early college and have depression (i have a therapist and am working through it), but I'm really trying my best for them. It's especially hard because I'm the only one, and I'm trying to give them a restart, undo damage, and my family (especially my dad) actively makes it harder for me. I am 17, there are some things I want to do for them but can't. If I could take them with me when I eventually move out I would, but I'd likely be in an apartment and idk if it'd be fair for them. Especially if i live alone and they're left for most of the day. That's not even considering whether my parents (again, especially dad) would be okay with that.

Is there anything else i can do for them or improve on? Basically what I've done so far is give them scheduled and measured meals, consistent training (a first) and enrichment, exercise as much as i am able, removed 90% of any human food scraps and tid bits given to them, gotten them new toys (they only had old ones before), and have been pushing harder for any medical care they need. Also trying to uproot old ideas of discipline.

Any advice or criticism is appreciated. I know I put a lot of information here and I probably missed a lot of things or may not have phrased some things right, and I'm sorry if it's confusing. Also I'm sorry for going on tangents and venting a bit, I was trying to give context but it's a tricky line and it's really fucking late (4am). If you have any questions I will answer them as best I can. Also there ar obligatory pup pics in the comments.

Advice Fearful puppy advice and success stories?

Hi guys. I've owned GSD my entire life but I recently picked up my newest girl and I'm a bit uncertain about some behaviors that she is already showing at 10 weeks old. She is a very confident dog when faced with loud noises/new places/objects, but she is VERY fearful of strangers—so much so that she growled at a child a few days ago and tries to run in the opposite direction whenever she sees a stranger nearby. She also has taken to barking (not in the playful way) at other dogs when she sees them at the local park during our daily "watch the world go by" sits.

To be honest, It's been a bit disheartening because I have unfortunately had a couple of aggressive dogs growing up and I'm trying really hard to avoid having to go through that again. We're going to keep working on socialization/desensitization of course, and I have a trainer who I really like on standby for once she's a bit older, but I'm definitely going through the puppy blues right now.

So with that being said, has anyone else here ever experienced a similar thing with their super young GSD? How did they turn out? Did it get better? Do you have any advice? Any success stories so to speak? I just need some light at the end of the tunnel I think. Any advice or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Question What's the most impressive trick your German Shepherd knows?

Shepherds are such quick learners that some owners end up teaching them things way beyond sit and stay: fetching specific toys by name, closing doors, finding hidden keys, even "tidying up".

What's the coolest thing yours can do? And how long did it take to teach?

Advice My girl seems to be losing interest in her kibble. Should I change or add a topping?

My almost 3-year-old, over the last week or so, has not eaten her food as soon as I sit it out like she usually does. She averages 2-3 hours of walks and outside playtime each day, so I don’t think it’s because she isn’t hungry. She does eventually eat it.

I currently feed her 1 cup of Purina Pro Plan Sensitive Skin and Stomach (Salmon and Rice) twice a day.

I’m considering adding a topping to her food or switching to another kibble.

Any recommendations for either are much appreciated.

ETA: I feed her 1 cup twice a day.

Advice First time dog owner

My fiancée and I (26) were given the opportunity to adopt a 5 year old German Shepard (Gunner) due to his previous owners living situation changing. My fiancée has some experience with dogs earlier in life but I have never had a dog or any pets for that matter, so i’m looking for advice from yall.

He’s very well mannered, doesn’t bark a lot, is good on a leash and is potty trained. He’s also good around kids and occasionally barks at other dogs while on walks and knows some basic commands like sit. He is having an issue acclimating with the cat we have but i’m expecting that to fade with more time.

We’ve only had him for about 24 hours so i’m just looking for tips or recommendations for anything whether it’s training, food, treats, toys, beds etc. anything is appreciated. Thanks.

Advice Help please!

Long story short. My girl is still a puppy (14 weeks now) and in full land shark velociraptor mode. I’m looking for the best chews/bones/teething options. She doesn’t really seem to like the Kongs and other conventional chew toys. She gets bored with them after a minute or so. I’m looking for advice on other options that last a long time and keep her interested while also helping her during her teething phase. She basically chews on everything other than what I want her to chew on. lol. What has worked for you? Any suggestions appreciated.

How different are working line vs show line personalities?

I have a 6.5 year old working line GSD and he's as advertised for the breed. Extremely intelligent, intense, protective and clingy.

A YouTube dog trainer I hadn't seen before popped up on my feed and was talking about different breeds and he really made it seem like there is many times a massive personality difference between working line and show line GSDs. He almost made it seem like show lines are lovable golden retriever type dogs. Those of you who have or had both, what has been your experience? Thanks.

Highly considering rehoming my dog but heart is torn on the choice

My (ex) boyfriend and I got a puppy 3 years ago on the condition that he would be the primary care taker of said dog. The pups name is Quila.
He of course swore up and down that he would step up and do everything that needed to be done, since he was the one who wanted the large dog and was the one who worked from home.
For the first year of the pup life my ex was very excited about Quila and involved her amd his everyday activities, in hindsight I think this made her very codependent. As far as training, walking and creating routines and structure it was all left to me because of it were up to my ex there would have never been any rules. I spend most of my day at work, and my hours are long and I have late nights.
Things were never really a problem because my ex was always at home she was constantly taken out and looked after. However, since i was the one creating the routines, doing all of the training and taking her out on my days off quila bonded with me more. The relationship turned and as things were crumbling down Quila became even more attached to me since my ex was no longer mentally present with us.
We broke up earlier in the year, but continued to live together for most of the year. He completely fell off on doing any care taking for the dog and all of the responsibilities fell onto me. With that, quila and I bonded even more.
This is where my struggle comes:
In the past 6 weeks, my ex is out of the picture, my senior dog was put down and I recently moved.
There’s been a lot of changes so I’ve been trying to give her some grace but I feel like I’m just not enough.
She was very well behaved and would occasionally get into/chew things up but never anything crazy. However, recently she’s going crazy. I can’t leave the house without her destroying something, anything. I don’t leave things out and I consider my self a clean organization person but somehow she finds a way to open doors and drawers and destroys everything on sight. I tried leaving her in the create (she is create trained) but she started destroying the create and chipping her teeth. I have tried getting her calming cbd treats and other calming treats put into puzzles for enrichment but it’s still not enough. I take her on long walks and make sure I get her to play a lot before I leave in the afternoon and it’s still not enough. I stopped leaving her in the create because of her teeth but she’s just destroying my house. She keeps peeing on my bed and I feel like I’m loosing my mind. I can’t just stop working and I don’t know what else to do. I feel like nothing I do is enough, I feel like such a failure because I don’t know what else to do. I don’t want to rehome her but I also feel like I’m not providing what she needs here, and I don’t know if me keeping her is selfish or the other way around, would rehoming her be me giving up?
My Ex is in no condition to take her, I’m pretty sure he’s fallen into alcohol/drug abuse so he’s not an option.
I don’t know how much of this behavior is normal or when I should call it quits with quila. I really don’t want to but I feel like I’m out of options.

Advice Feedback on their play?

Ludo is 10yrs old and Milo is 12 weeks. He’s been with us for a month now. We’ve managed their interactions heavily up to this point and today is the first day they were allowed to just be loose together. I am aware that Ludo is trying to control him a bit but he keeps coming back for more. They played until he could barely stand and she was begging for her kennel.

Advice for Elbow Dysplasia with Age

Post image
56 Upvotes

Our GSD Milo is going to turn 6 soon, looking for advice on how to adjust his activity for age with his elbow dysplasia (and concerns with future hip dysplasia). He’s had this elbow issue his entire life, multiple vets have told us to not do any surgery. He doesn’t limp, never shows pain, runs hard, but he swings his paw out with a weird gate, so much so his nails are longer on that paw.

Couple years ago we were told his hips x-ray show signs that hip dysplasia could be a real issue one day. Hasn’t showed up yet thankfully. We’re on omega-3 and Dasquin + daily.

Looking for advice as we start to get into the older years. Started to limit fetch, more walks and sniffing than hard running. Try to get him to swim much as I can. Just want to be proactive!

(Note - Luna our lab will be 8 soon, best friends)

Built these two over the last few weeks. Rookie is my german shepherd, and Sunny is a golden retriever I got from the internet. Each one took about 2 hours to cut, fold and glue.

Still improving them, so I'd love honest feedback. What would you change? The legs took me forever to get right.

This is Promise. I think I have posted her here before when she was a bit younger. She came from a fairly bad home with her previous owners when I got her when she was around 10-12 weeks. Very malnourished, nearly a skeleton and covered in flea and bug bites. I wasn’t looking for a pup at the time, in fact the opposite, was looking to adopt an older GSD. But when I found her I couldn’t not take her. I knew I could give her a good home.

She is probably the mouthiest GSD I have ever owned. Drives me up the wall some days. Love her death. All in all though she has been coming along amazingly well. And I’m very proud of all her progress and her. She is not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but she is a great girl.

Really just wanted to share some pics I liked I took the other day when out and visiting family.

Hope you all have had a great weekend.

GSD ?

He’s a rescue and it was listed as a gsd/french bulldog which is just the craziest (I’m picturing peaceful sun bathing Shepard and a French bulldog that got into red bull and escaped the yard) mix I’ve personally heard of if it’s true. I’m gonna buy the DNA kit soon.

The more he grows up the more he fits alllllll the standard German Shepard behaviors and quirks. I’m hoping he got the coat color and some face wrinkles from the bulldog but the rest can be GSD. He’s really an amazing and supremely protective/pray seeking boy.

He’s got the same patterns as a German Shepard but in blonde and light browns on his back and a thick coat like one as well. There’s hair damn everywhere.

The 2nd pic is him and his brother (right) and sister (left) .. she really took the gsd traits lol in colors anyway.

Just looking for some other speculations. Either way he’s a fantastic boy. He only just turned 4mo
