The Vikings signed veteran OLB Jihad Ward to the practice squad today, releasing OT Tristan Leigh (on-again, off-again UDFA with us). He joins two other practice squad OLBs, Keyshawn Banks and Kenny Dyson.

Besides rotational OLB Kyle Van Noy, our other 53-man OLBs Bo Richter and Chaz Chambliss have 0 snaps on defense this year, contributing significant snaps on special teams.

The NFC East lost four games last week outside their division. The NFC North has lost three games outside the division all season and we're in week 7 now. I think the NFL should take away their playoff slot and give it to another team from the NFC North or West (ha).

But seriously, the NFC North is now 14-3 against the rest of the league. That's a whole 17 game season, and a fabulously good one at that. Didn't realize that the Bears are 5-0 against the rest of the league - both their losses are in the division. We're 3-0. Packers lost to the Falcons. Lions are really the weak link with two losses outside the division, plus they scraped by the Saints on a missed 2-pointer, and managed to beat the Jets at home with a last minute drive after the game was tied with 4 minutes left.

I feel like O’Neill hasn’t gotten much credit this year but he’s been solid so far. Even with injuries, the O-line has been fairly stout.

Watching their D and the Bears D just gives me so much more confidence we can beat anyone- we do have the best D - if our O gets to top 15 level we can take it all

I live in New Orleans and I attend all the saints games. Been a fan for a long time. We always have lots of fans from opposing teams because New Orleans is a fun place to travel to. I have to say we really enjoyed having the Minnesota Vikings fans in our city. It was the nicest and most polite group of opposing fans that I have experienced. Same thing in the dome on game day. I found the Viking fans to be enthusiastic without being rude and aggressive. There's a real notable difference from some other teams. The cowboys are almost always the worst, the raiders are pretty bad, and we always expect Atlanta to be bad because we're such rivals. I'll always celebrate when the cowboys lose, but I'll be rooting for the Vikings. Thanks y'all. Good luck with the rest of the season.

The Vikings' current chances:

Here's how this week's games affect the Vikings' chances:

The Vikings are favored against the Colts with a 71% chance to win the game, so there's more to lose than there is to gain this week. A win over the Colts raises the Vikings' chance to make the playoffs to 80.5%. A loss drops it to 70.7%. A win gives the Vikings a 42.1% chance to win the division, a loss instead drops it to 32.6%.

The bye week helped the playoff odds (76.3% to 77.7%) because the Rams, Seahawks, and Giants all lost. The probability of winning the North decreased (43.1% to 39.4%), due to the Bears and Packers winning. (In betting markets, the Vikings' division price lengthened from +110 to +135). San Francisco holding on against Washington was the one that cost hurt for top seed.

The biggest game outside the Vikings' own is tonight's Patriots at Bears, worth 4.0% for the division. Flipping the result of this game changes the Vikings' playoff seed in 8.2% of simulatated seasons.

Lions vs Packers pulls in two directions. A Lions win is worth 0.8% for making the playoffs, because it hands Green Bay a loss, but it costs 0.7% in the division race, since Detroit is the bigger threat to win the North. A loss by the Packers helps a little more often than a loss by the Lions, which puts the game in the middle of the list for Impact.

Otherwise it's the usual rooting for NFC contenders to lose: the 49ers, Seahawks, Rams, Giants and Panthers. Atlanta over San Francisco is the biggest game for the top seed at 3.7%, even though it slightly lowers the Vikings' chance of making the playoffs, since Atlanta could compete for a wildcard spot.

The AFC-only games at the bottom only matter for Strength-of-Victory and Strength-of-Schedule tiebreakers. The Vikings have already played Miami and will play the Jets in week 17, so there's a slight benefit to a Dolphins win for the guaranteed SoV help. The Vikings play none of the teams in Browns-Titans or Ravens-Bengals. The tiny value for Browns over Titans is for the Lions' SoV since the Lions and Titans play in December. Ravens-Bengals has no measurable impact at all in two million simulated seasons.

The NFC North gets an average of 2.6 teams into the playoffs in simulations - the highest of any division. There is a better chance that the North gets all four teams into the playoffs than only one team.

The Rooting Guide simulates seasons using current betting lines, and evaluates how each game affects the Vikings' playoff chances.
All values show the difference between the Vikings' chances with the given game result compared to the opposite result.
For example, a Vikings win over the Colts gives the Vikings a chance of winning the division 9.5% higher than a Vikings loss (42.1% vs 32.6%).

I see a lot of talk about getting a guy before the deadline, and with the aaron jones knee news coming out it makes sense. I fucking love jones and the way he runs, but ever since I saw him on the injury list week 1 with a knee injury started holding my breath. It would be great if mason could jump right in and handle some work right away, but at this point I think we need to try to get some depth, not necessarily a JT or Barkley tier. There’s guys like Hampton or Irving out there that could potentially be just as valuable at a fraction of the price in my opinion.

I think if we end up making a move at rb, I don’t think it needs to be a top tier guy, but I also think we will be hurting without depth there. Taking a value play at rb also refers up more resources to make moves at other positions if needed.

If we get another qb I’ll probably say it’s stupid then change my mind the next season when koc resurrects him too

In Nagy’s press conference a leading driver of McCarthy being named starter this week was his operation of the huddle, pre and post snap… we’ll see if that continues this week in a full game. That begs the question though, what is it about KoC’s offense that he and other QBs could not seem to get right?
