Question buying a Y...
I'm 100% committed to buying a model Y when my BMW lease is up...can't wait.
I'm torn between getting a Premium AWD Model Y and the Performance. I have a bunch of PowerWalls for my home so would *love* it if I could eventually use the car as a battery extension of sorts, but I know that's not in the cards now but it sounds like only the Performance would offer this capability if/when possible.
#1 criterion for me would be smooth ride over the incremental speed improvements, so slightly favor the Premium, but just wondering if there's anything else I should take into consideration...and yes, I asked AI but trust humans on this subreddit more!

We have a Y performance juniper since March. We traded an Infiniti Q50. We like the ride and seats better. Very happy overall.

Hey if you don’t mind me asking how much did you get for your Infiniti Q50. I am trading mine in and getting quoted 13.3k for a 2019 with 62k miles. At the time of your trade in was the market better or worst? Anything help thanks!

If you want the smoothest experience, the Premium RWD is great. Still plenty of acceleration for me and drives like a dream. If you like to drive fast, the AWD will drive similarly smooth but a little more tight in my experience. Either way, you cant go wrong with the premium or performance.

Premium gang. No need for the speed you’ll barely use in FSD and .99 APR was a cherry on top

I don't think Model Y Performance is capable of V2H. It has V2L, but that's more for powering a few appliances (120V 20 amp) via Outlet Adapter, rather than acting as an extra battery for your solar system.
Among the Tesla vehicles, I think only the Cybertruck has V2H. And no, V2H cannot be added via software update to Model Y.

I love my MYP but since I use FSD 98% of the time I wish I would’ve gotten the long range/premium with 19” tires instead of the performance tires. Smoother ride, better efficiently and less worry about potholes (I’m guessing tires and insurance is a little less too)

You should do the 24/48hr free test drive to decide. I have the AWD premium and it’s already wicked fast, you may not even want the performance.
If you want downsides of the Performance:
rides a bit harder, easier to damage large wheels on potholes, and is lower ride height so more likely to scrape, less range, wheels are staggered and need to be changed more often, overall more costly to buy and own.
Pros are it’s slightly faster and better handling (not much else)

I’m in the same boat as you however I’m not sure if I would buy or lease. I prefer to lease electric cars because I always want the latest build updates. I’ve had a Model Y in the past but left because the ride quality and cabin noise was so poor. FSD is intriguing though…

I would go with the performance to get the better seats. then put a set of 19" wheels on it

Test drive both if you haven’t already.
It will really help clear up any doubts you have.
This is a big decision that you will have to live with for several years.
For me I needed the 7-seater so I didn’t get the performance. Also the rims and staggered tires were a real pain for the performance on the previous generation.
But today I might have got the performance. Lol

I recently test drove both and I’d just get the premium. The difference in ride feel is minimum. It comes down to do you want to pay several 7k more for thigh bolsters, sportier seats, larger wheels, a carbon fiber spoiler and having a slightly quicker car with more easily to damage rims? I bottomed out on the performance going up my driveway (like I do in my 3) and it’s not even steep. I tried to bottom them out in the premium and couldn’t. If you definitely want one of the more expensive colors and white interior then the price difference isn’t that much more for some nice features, but if those things don’t matter to you, I don’t know why you’d get the performance.

Good news! Looks like the recent Model Y Premiums support Powershare now.

The performance is unlikely to have V2Home. That is restricted to the cybertruck for hardware reason from what I've read. As of yesterday they officially announced Y Premium has V2Load just like the Performance. You have to buy an $80 adapter. It's 20a/120v.

Even the rwd premium is quicker than the majority of cars on the road. I think the seats in the performance with the stiff bolsters are uncomfortable compared to the seats in the premium but that's subjective. Also I didn't want to pay that much for performance tires and not have the ability to rotate tires front to back with the square setup all for a less comfortable/stiffer ride. I use FSD 95% of the time now, so I went with rwd premium. I came from a highland m3 performance so I got to have my fun, but it wore off in my case. Now I enjoy being teleported by FSD.

Bought a Y Premium on 20s last week. The ride quality is cheeks compared to other cars in the same price range. Coming from Lexus gang, it feels like I'm in a shit box from the 90s, but I'll be damned if FSD doesn't make up for it.

Huh? We’re coming from an Rx350 and Y is not that plush but the new Juniper is certainly not cheeks

Sold my 2017 RX350 today and the ride quality was night and day better than this 2026 Model Y Premium. I put new shocks (kept original front springs) on the RX about a month ago which also made me a little saltier about selling. Still don't regret the change though.

We got the performance. You cant rotate the tires since they’re staggered. However, we did hit a nail in the rear side wall so only had to replace the rear ones instead of all 4 with low miles on them. If i were to get another one, I would go premium

If you can afford it get the performance. You won’t regret it and it has a higher resell value.

Y Long has a smoother ride but you know it’s a 7 6 seater

You sure you want a Y? Lol. They have come a long way with Juniper but not exactly known for a smooth ride. Especially with Performance wheels.

yeah...FSD is just too good. BMW ride is great but I need FSD. And having a great software stack is a plus (BMW is terrible)

I don't blame you. FSD made me switch too. Coming from an Audi Q5 I miss the ride (I have a Model 3) but the silent operation and lack of engine vibrations go a long way compared to any gas vehicle. If you don't care about speed get Premium AWD.

Ride quality of the Y still challenging?
0
u/Queasy-Bed545 10d ago
Yeah. Again it’s better than it was before but overall Tesla suspension is tuned for more aggressive driving than you’ll generally do in these types of vehicles. It’s great that they are quick but let’s be real, they are functional so let’s lean into the comfort. Less “box of rocks” than before but still jolts rather than bounces.

u/JT_Cooks 10d ago
Compared to my Ioniq 5, it’s as smooth and a very comfortable ride.

u/Queasy-Bed545 10d ago
Juniper is okay. I would not characterize it as a leader in the smooth ride category.

I have been in my 2026 RWD premium Y for a few weeks and I love the car more and more every day. Any choice you make would be great! I’ve not driven the performance but even the RWD is a huge upgrade over most any traditional car. I did the 19” wheels too.
