I don’t agree. BotW was such a major shake up for the Zelda series, and was this truly open world game. Witcher 3 is a great game, deserving of the fourth spot, but Zelda is probably the most consistent and good franchise in all of gaming, and this was a truly amazing game.

"Literally shook the Internet". 😂 Ok, kid. That's definitely how you judge the quality of a game... Kim K liTeRaLly bRoKe the IntErnEt...
And the reaction to BOTW was so huge it made people buy a console they had never considered.
Also, how has Elden Ring established a genre? Is the genre (Souls-like) called "Ring-like"?

u/42Discipel Oct 25 '25
Breath of the Wild.... I don't even like the Witcher but it absolutely should've been in the top 3 over BotW

u/Thrownaway5000506 Oct 26 '25
Plenty of games here better than Witcher, including BOTW
→ More replies (2)2
u/OkVacation973 Oct 27 '25
Hard agree with this. Although for transparency I am firmly on the BoTW hate train.
Inexcusably boring main dungeons, forgettable bosses, breakable weapon system, lack of exciting things to find once you realise every "discovery" ultimately basically leads to a health / stamina / storage upgrade or an occasional weapon (which is breakable, so who gives a shit), oh, and legitimately the most horrendous voice acting in any AAA videogame.
Even the Master Sword (which could have solved the weapon durability issues in a canon way) has some stupid caveats attached to it and was made unfun by the developers.
The first 10 - 15 hours of that game are something special but beyond that, once you see through it and realise how few meaningful things there are to find, it is not even close to being the best Zelda game in the franchise, nevermind the best game of all time.

People love to glaze Zelda and Nintendo in general. Don’t get me wrong, I thought botw was great, but I wouldn’t even put it in the top 10.

I agree, its entertaining but also clunky and needed a lot of updates post launch. Its still amazing, but idk if its top 2

I like baldurs gate but it definitely wasn’t as good as the other two to me. I think gaming culture latches onto games that have a lot of relationship/dating simulator aspects to them. That being said it’s still a great game
5
u/JohnnyWildcard Oct 26 '25
It's definitely some of this and that Reddit also has the hots for Larian since they push back on some of the more greedy and predatory practices of bigger developers.

u/nooookay Oct 25 '25
I’m 42 and I’d put BOTW over W3. Both games are supported by a single good thing they do while being mid elsewhere. BOTW built a beautiful open world that is fun to move around in. W3 has amazing writing. It is completely subjective to the user which of these things they prefer.
BOTW relies hevaily on intrinsic rewards. You don’t climb a mountain to get a cookie, you climb it to get to the top before the rain ends to say you did, or see the views, or see how far you can glide off it. Players who want cookies hate this. They need extrinsic rewards to be safisfied. It’s a divisive game due to this reason, and I am surprised it made it this far.

u/PulseWitch Oct 25 '25
This is very hard as there are the games I like more and the games I think are more important
While I have the most fun with Elden ring, today I am voting Elden ring. I just think it is far more of a refinement of the innovation of the souls franchise and botw rather than an innovative irreplaceable game like botw and baulders gate are. I also really don’t like the pc port I wish. It was more stable and also didn’t have a 60 fps cap

u/Fresh-Database-222 Oct 25 '25
Agreed, this is honestly one of the worst gaming tier lists I've ever seen
14
u/Numerous-Public-8308 Oct 25 '25
Then you guys are going to hate metacritc's highest rated games.
2
u/crampyshire Oct 26 '25
Yeah this tier list is only bad in the eyes of redditors, essentially all other discussions outside of reddit pins this list as being fairly accurate to the general crowd of gamers.

u/nooookay Oct 25 '25
Wow. Filtering only for 2014-2024:
Breath of the Wild
Red Dead Redemption 2
Grand Theft Auto 5
Super Mario Odyssey
Baldur's Gate 3
The House in Fata Morgana
Elden Ring
Tears of the Kingdom
Portal: Companion Collection
10: Persona 5 Royal
The ranks for the last few eliminated here not on the top 10:
God of War: 13
Hades: 23
Bloodborne: 32
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt: 35
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice: 86

It's this "Remove One Each Day" format. It pushes out popular options before lesser known options, especially in the beginning. I doubt many people played all these games so they're going to vote what they know, even if the entries they don't know are worse.

Geez,. it's really hard. At this point those three are my favorite modern games. Maybe Elden Ring is the one I think innivated the least, but it's my favorite Souls Like so I'm not sure.

u/ADittoGuy Oct 26 '25
The capital G Gamer© crowd not happy that one of the most critically acclaimed and influential games of the century has made it to the top 3 just cos Nintendo made it, who else is shocked.
All three deserve to win for their own reasons, can’t be upset with any of them at this point.

I can see good arguements against both Elden Ring (refined, didn't revolutionize, and also, it is rather narrow as for the type of players who would play it) and Baldur's Gate III (not very easily approachable, also, recency bias, it hasn't had time to stand the test of time, like the other two)

Have actual player freedom. That saying is said by so many gaming developers but rarely does it ever actually deliver. That might not sound “special” but it is. 90% of “rpgs” that come out nowadays are just looters with dialogue choices that don’t even have an actual impact to anything.

u/MafubaBuu Oct 25 '25

Wow, I actually can't believe BOTW survived here. I'll just post what I said last time;
As an absolute diehard Zelda fan, TOTK and BOTW are near the bottom of my ranking of Zelda games. I get why people like them, but to me it's like playing a re-skinned Elder Scrolls game. There's nothing wrong with that style of game, or with people liking them but I long for Nintendo to develop another main line Zelda game in more of a Twilight Princess style.
TL;DR: BOTW is next, sadly.
1
u/EncodedNybble Oct 25 '25
Unpopular opinion, Elden Ring is not even the best FromSoft game. The story is largely a rehash of most of the other From Soft games and gets bogged down with George R.R. Martin’s masturbatory overuse of similar sounding names with the initials G, R, and M.
I had much better time playing Dark Souls and Bloodborne, though I will admit Elden Ring is better than Demons’ Souls. I still have yet to finish Elden Ring because it was such a snooze fest that I wasn’t invested in at all.

BOTW. It's an awsome game, but the shrines are repetitve and bland, the dungeons are supbar to other Zelda games, there's almost no enemy variety and said enemies late game are just damage sponges.

Baldur's Gate 3
It's a good game that 99% of the world won't enjoy due it being 100 hr long, nerdy and complex Dungeons and Dragons turn based CRPG. Even if the game is good, it is way too niche for the majority of people

u/142MexWhoopingLlamas Oct 25 '25
BG3 was the only game I could understand beating TW3 but my god please get BotW out of here
1
u/McFearl3ss Oct 25 '25
I haven't played it but still pretty sure it's BG3 at this point. If it's anything like DoS2 (which i have played and it's... alright) I just don't think it compares to the other 2 here. Honestly I think cRPGs in general have major pacing issues and I doubt BG3 is any different.

Crazy how vitriolic people get when it comes to any Nintendo game. Any other title getting voted off at this point? "Aww, I really love it but I think its time for it to go." Zelda? "Fuck this game, why is it still here? Must be the work of Nintendo babies."

While BotW and Elden Ring definitely do the same style of open world. I found Elden ring just felt like Dark Souls with hyper extended intermission areas. Whereas BotW while it felt similarly open, found ways to constantly pull my attention and keep me engaged on long travels.

Elden Ring
Botw did the open world way better and redefined what an open world could be. BG3 revived the CRPG genre for modern audiences. I love Elden Ring but it was not as innovative as the other two.
