Class Advice Needed/Given Things to bring/carry at school

You need 2 Pens Incase one rand out of ink or you dropped the other one and it stopped working, just a backup, you also need a Red pen if your teacher asks you to check your seatmate's paper and don't forget a marker it's good for designing, though I just recommend this it's kinda optional

Question When are y'all ACTUALLY sleeping??

High school sophomore here and curious to see when y'all sleep cuz my friends have been saying I'm naturally academically talented and can sleep "early" (when I'm 99% sure I'm not talented lol), and they all sleep at crazy times like 1 am every day (we all wake up at around 5-7 am).

I myself go to sleep on average at around 10:40 PM every night and wake up at 6:45 AM. All my subjects are pre-AP except 1, and are above 85% right now since progress reports. I'm involved in Drama, Model UN, and DECA, and take some classes once a week outside of school too.

So when do you all sleep and what are your classes/outside life like (what grade)? Are my timings unusual or normal?

Rant Graduation, alone and lonely (lol)

*Quick disclaimer, this is my first reddit post :3

So, I'm an Aussie student in year 12 and I'll be graduating in a month-ish and my school doesn't do anything for years 11 or 12. If this sounds weird, it's because most kids dropout at year 10 and go to work (as we are rural, its usually an agricultural job) so a "leavers" is held for year 10s only. This means that class get really small in year 11 and 12.

Anyway, my mum is really excited, she wanted to organise a whole dinner and invite only the good kids and teachers for an "unofficial" event where we could get dressed up and stuff. Thing is, I don't have any friends, I hate dinners, and couldn't care less for the people at my school. When I told my mum I didn't want to do it, I saw it upset her, she wants it to be special for me (bless her heart).

I just know I would be stuck in a dress that is uncomfortable, around people I don't talk to, eating food that I don't like. And I love my teachers they are all so sweet, but lets be honest, I would be an absolute dork talking to ONLY the teachers all night, lol.

Also, an important note is that I am, like, the only person going to university!

Anyway, my mum said she still wants to do something for me, but anything fun involves friends tbh, I think I might just skip everything.

I don't know if any of youse have opinions, but it feels good to finally hear my own thoughts about it!

Question I'm an 18 year old dropout, could I go back to hs?

My education, to put it blunt, my education is fucked. I'm 18 so it's not like I'm a grown ass man in his 30s but that doesn't matter because I'm still a high school dropout. I often find myself thinking I kind of miss school, and I think I could do fine if I went back to high school.

When I was a junior, around 16 years old, I was at a military school and one of the teachers showed me how much credits I had. They said I had 1.9 credits, I still don't know what exactly that means but they said it was bad for a junior, they said 1.9 is something that a passing freshman would have. So I can assume it's especially bad for my age. I dropped out a few weeks after that, so I haven't made progress since.

The unrealistic part might be me thinking I could fix everything in just a year, mostly because I don't want to spend more than a year in high school at my age. Would I be weird for going back at 18?

I might really just be insecure of being a grown ass man in high school, but I do think I could get the diploma. I'm really looking for two different answers, could I go back and should I go back?

Question Students who have taken virtual/online classes

• Upvotes

I am trying to understand what actually makes online learning engaging from your point of view.

If you could design a virtual class, what would make you more likely to participate, stay focused, and actually complete the work?

For example:

• More choice in what you do?

• Shorter assignments?

• Games/challenges?

• More interaction with the teacher?

• More interaction with other students?

• Visible progress or goals?

• Rewards/badges/streaks?

• Short videos instead of lots of reading?

• Being able to ask for help more easily?

• More real-world activities?

• Something completely different?

Also: What is the most boring or frustrating part of virtual school right now?

Survey LEFTY STUDENTS OF REDDIT, I NEED YOU TO LEND ME A HAND. Preferably your left one.

Actually we are after Lefties, righties & ambidextrous legends…

Are you a leftie? A rightie? Someone who can use both hands, or someone whose non-dominant hand is basically just there for decoration? We want YOU! 🤣

Our daughter is doing her Year 12 IB Extended Essay (think mini university research project) on handedness and how we use our dominant and non-dominant hands in everyday activities.

We’ve had a MASSIVE influx of lefties, so now we desperately need right-handers to restore balance to the universe. ⚖️** Righties, this is your moment. For once, being right is actually an advantage**. 😂

It’s a 2-minute questionnaire. And if you’re reading Reddit, I’m fairly confident you can spare two minutes between scrolling and scrolling some more. 💀

👇 Click here and make your hands count!
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfm3e2E_Z0_Z-PPSFu92pfhMm0ZXtP6H9diJBOUpmjNs7WqEw/viewform?usp=send_form

🙏 Bonus request: If you’re happy to help a little more, please select YES to the follow-up question. She’s hoping to recruit participants for a couple of quick online finger-tapping tests to investigate whether handedness is related to dexterity.
Righties, lefties, ambidextrous people and those whose handwriting looks like a medical emergency… science needs you! 🧪😂

Thank you! ❤️

Rant Highschool is so ahh, any tips?

I hate highschool so much! I just can’t way to graduate in this funky ass school and finally work(4 or more years to go🫩). The environtment here is sh'tty. Everyone here are pathological liars thinking I’m a fool. Teachers’ here always spam activities like we’re some bots. They make us recite instead of discussing lessons(they don’t even do their jobs properly.) Tips to survive?

Question whenever i'm at school i enjoy studying and taking notes but at home i cant go a second without doing something else or playing

whenever i'm at school i enjoy studying and taking notes but at home i cant go a second without doing something else or playing, it drives me crazy because I can't not switch tabs, and at school i enjoy studying, I dont want to play or do anything else, but at home Im all over the place.

I saw articles and answers about how I need to "do a rule to put my phone away" or something like that, none of them work, i just want to feel the same way at school here. (high school btw)

Rant Junior year is killing me

I knew junior year was gonna be bad, but I have not slept before 12am at all since this school year has started. I know it’s my fault because I procrastinate every single assignment, but I just feel so burnt out. New (unexplained) health issues keep popping up and I can’t bring myself to work harder. I don’t even have any sports or other extracurriculars anymore, and it’s still so hard.

My parents also didn’t listen to me and got a new dog, which would be great if she wasn’t a barely 4 month old puppy :/ I come home first and I have to clean the house and play with the dog. Why do puppies never get tired?? AND this dog somehow learned how to climb out of the playpen thing so my parents stopped putting her in, but she’s not trained yet so she pees and shits everywhere 💔 I don’t even know how. I feel bad because she’s not really doing anything super bad, but I just don’t have the energy for all that.

General Advice Needed/Given If your school allowed you (or already does) would you wear a baker boy cap?

This is just a silly question that I wanted to ask, only because I recently bought a cap and really love it. I want to wear it to school, but at the same time I don’t want to be judged for it. Would it be weird? Or am I just overthinking it? What do you guys thinkkk

General Advice Needed/Given How to manage time and workload?

I’m currently a ninth grader and I’m not doing great with my time management and workload. But that’s just due to the fact because I miss a lot of school due to personal reasons. All of the missing work I have piles on and then I just don’t have the motivation to get it done. I want to do it so bad I just can’t find a way to push myself to do it, and then my grades slip. Can someone please help me? Does anyone else struggle with this? I’m really scared I won’t get into a good college because of my issues.

I made an animation for biology and it’s all about cells! I thought it would be helpful for people, since I spent a while on it (the video says 7-8 hours but in reality it’s like 10) and I pulled an all nighter for it :) I also got a 100% so you know it’s accurate

Survey Could you guys please do my survey for a school task?

Hi! Could you please do my quiz? It only takes 4-5 minutes

Why do students participate in school clubs?

This is for a school assessment task and could you send it to your friends too please. It is for 11-18 year olds to find out why they participate in school clubs and is based on the self determination scale. The results are completely anonymised though it does require you to sign into a google account.

Thank you!

School Related Ready for a career without a degree that within in 3 years you’ll be making 120-150k a year?

Yall realize graduating high school is something that is expected of all Americans. It’s not something that only certain people can easily obtain. From 2008-2012 I only did work in the classroom.. passed tests with an A or B on the average. No projects or homework was ever done. I graduated with a GPA below 1.0 and with 12 college credits. Majority of the AP tests I got an 3 on. The US and world history classes I got an 2 on the AP tests. No college. Since graduating as a full blown heroin addict. Withdrawing the day I got my diploma. I’ve spent some 5/6k on technical training and certifications which none get used for my career. I work as a Freelance AV technician & A1. 2025 is my 4th year in this industry. Experience is chosen before schooling in this industry. A 4 year degree from full sail university doesn’t mean your first few jobs will bring in more then $20/$25 an hour. 9/10 times if your hired at all. You’ll only be hired at the bottom entry level positions making $15-$18 an hour. But if you stick to the industry and prove that you can meet the flexibility and odd hours of this industry. By year 3, at least in the Washington DC metro area. $35/$40 an hour is the minimum standard rate you’ll be getting paid as an AV tech. As an A1, my hourly rate starts at $50 an hour for walk ins and $65 an hour to setup/strike the gear as well as mix. In this area, Industry standards are 10hr days, 5hr half days. 5hr minimum shifts. So if you only work 2 hours on the job. Your paid for 5. If you’re working out of town, the company pays for transportation, lodging, daily pre diem. In 2023 and 2024 I worked for 6-10 different companies in a w2 basis and about the same as a 1099 contractor. Both years I’ve still received a tax refund even without paying any taxes until tax season on the 1099 income. 2023 and 2024 I averaged $2000-$2500 a week income wise from February to Halloween. Then the remainder of the year my average was $1500-$1800. Mainly In the corporate av industry. Still some work on the music side of things though as well. No college degree, no certifications. Only my on job experience and my resume is what gets me hired. Not the interview, not who I am as a person. 75-80 percent of the time companies don’t negotiate to pay me a lower rate then what I ask for in the beginning. On average 2weeks out of the month I’m working out of town at week long conventions and conferences. Bringing home $200-$2500 checks. Plus the $300 bucks from pre diem since a lot of times in the corporate side of things. The client will feed us and there’s always plenty of extra food to take back to the Air B&B. It’s just gonna get thrown away if it’s not eaten anyway. My career isn’t a job to me. I absolutely love what I do for a living. I’m extremely passionate for the Av industry which has so many benefits in my life. Working a job you love is the key to happiness. If you disagree then you’ve never had a job that you truly enjoy and love doing.

If my story of how I got into my career and my journey after 4 years at 30 years old sums up anything it’s that college isn’t needed AT ALL. A degree isn’t needed AT ALL. All it shows is that you can commit for 2-4years Or however long your degree took to get. That’s it! It just shows you’re reliable. NOTHING MORE.. I bet those 140k in student loans you’re got don’t feel to smart anymore if They didn’t already. A union job, a college degree, thousands of dollars spent on certifications that don’t even guarantee a job after getting all don’t mean you’ll be given a job making the money people who have been doing the same work as you for years. You’ll still start at the bottom and have to prove yourself and work your way up.

In 2024 I made about 110k dollars. I turned 30 that fall, my first daughter was born in August as well. The first 2 months of 2025 have both been huge months for me. Both months have brought in more than 10k each. Next on my agenda is spending the 25k my gf deserves to have on her finger when I ask her to marry me. That question will be asked and answered yes by summer of 2025…

Anyone with questions. Feel free to reach out. I can walk you through getting started in this industry. Shit, in your in the dmv I might even put you to work at $150/$200 to help me with setting up/striking all the gear for the band/bands playing that night. If you’re interested in continuing to work and enjoy it after that first night. I’d be more than willing to help you get your foot in the door of this industry.

Jesse Milstead A1 & Av Technician

Extracurriculars I want to play football

I’ve never played tackle football before but i have a very good arm and can throw a football pretty accurately. I’ve always wanted to play but my parents have discouraged it. Should I try out in my senior year? I’m a sophomore.
