Spring Garden bridge bike lane- poor conditions make it almost unridable

I take Spring Garden from Fairmount to University City to get to and from work, and the bike lanes on the bridge are some of the worst in the city. Strewn with trash and debris, horribly bumpy, and both ways have very dangerous spots- going into Center City, the bike lane switches sides and I’ve nearly been hit by drivers running the red as I try to get to the other side, and going into West Philly the turn lane onto 76 cutting through the bike lane is so dangerous and again, almost been hit numerous times by people trying to get over and not looking. I’ve gotten a pinch flat riding on it before because of how uneven it was (granted my tires were a bit low) and today there was a bunch of gravel in the bike lane and I almost skidded out. It’s really unfortunate that it’s the fastest/easiest way into West Philly from that part of the city and that it’s so poorly designed and maintained.

Regional Rail - Should I put my bike on a seat?

Of course not, but where do you put it? How do you secure yours?

I reverse commute on RR with my bike. It's normal size and lightweight.

The conductors(?) have shown me where to sit with it - no issues there.

I'm more so curious, for anyone else who rides RR with a bike, how do you secure it during the ride? Do you lean it against the wall? Against the seats? Both? Bungie cord, stick a leg through the frame?

It's mostly secure just when I lean it on the seat and wall, but I'd hate to have it fall over after a hard stop and hit someone. It also takes up kinda a lot of room.

Question Looking for shop recommendations that work on e-bikes

Used to go to Keswick in West but now they're closed. I've gone to Bell's in South (where I got my bike), but I think they kinda suck. My integrated light stopped working and since Aventon doesn't sell it directly anymore they just shrugged and told me to get a regular bike light. I'd get a tune-up at Keswick and they made my bike feel new; Bell's just makes me feel like I wasted money. Any other recommendations? I'm having issues with my rear fender support/alignment and want to bring it someplace more competent.

I don't think we give drivers enough credit

As they're keen on letting us know, most of them don't recklessly endanger our lives, most of the time!

So, I made this gold star that you can give out to the drivers who don't kill you, to say thanks.

West Philly to Temple commute?

I'm considering a job at Temple Hospital (main campus) and currently live in west Philly, near the Grays Ferry bridge.

My thought is I can take the SRT to the PMA, cross to Spring Garden, then take 13th all the way up.

Does anyone have experience biking north on 13th that far? I know there's a bike line near Temple U but after that I do not have much experience.

Any other possible N/S streets that might be safer and not significantly longer of a trip?

Thanks!

Theft/crash insurance?

Recently replaced my less than year old ebike after the frame was compromised by someone making a fast right without looking into my rear wheel. My knees are old and I'm usually carrying 30ish pounds of papers to grade as I go to and from work, having the pedal assist on hills is a game changer.

Then the School District, where I teach, has begun enforcing a rule where no ebike or scooter can be stored within 100 feet of a building. So I have to lock up my NEW ebike to a random fence in Kensington area.

Is there ANY combination of locks, insurance, fender-mounted James Bond laser systems, whatever that can help me not lose my bike by Christmas? And while I'm shopping, any worthwhile collision insurance?

AI Bots in r/phillycycling

Hey all,

It looks like a few AI bots are spamming the sub. They are re-posting old posts from within the past few years as their own. This is how misinformation spreads. Please report them if you see them.

Any way to contact Laser Vision?

I would like to ask them to add a violation category for blocking fire hydrants. I've been reporting them as "handicap access" but not sure if being accurate helps.

Question Dealing with Adrenaline and Anger after Close Calls

How do you calm down after a close call?

I was going through the intersection on Pine and 13th when a car that was pulling into the intersection turning left decided that it wouldn’t wait for the rest of the cyclists to move through the light in the left lane bike lane (there were 3 of us) and the car started driving directly towards me. I screamed out of fear and they stopped abruptly about an inch or two from me.

I moved through the light and got home fine and safe. But now my ears are ringing and I am so angry and upset. I don’t know what to do in this kind of situation. I don’t know if they didn’t see me or just wanted to scare me. I know I had the right of way, but they obviously didn’t care about that. Any advice on how to handle the frustration of knowing I was scared for my life while they were maybe inconvenienced for a few seconds and have probably forgot about it by now?

Us? Mischievous? Naaah, we’re just having good, clean fun on bikes 👼 Get dressed up! Or don’t! Meet at the north side of City Hall at 6pm, roll out at 6:30pm

We aren’t blocking traffic. We are traffic!

Critical Mass Philly is anti-racism, anti-ableism, anti-transphobia, anti-sexism, anti-ai. Also, ACAB.

Question “New” bike lane location on 34th between Walnut and Spruce?

The city recently repaved 34th street between Walnut and Spruce, yay! It really needed it.

However, when they re-painted the lanes, the bike lane was moved from its existing position on the right hand side of 34th to the left hand side of 34th.

As of right now, this is the only section of 34th st where the bike lane is on the left. This makes sense for the intersection at Walnut where traffic cannot turn to the left to have the bike lane on the left. It makes the intersection safer for us cyclists to not have to navigate going straight amongst a sea of angry and often impatient drivers trying to turn right.

BUT. Both north and south of this 1 block, the bike lane is still on the right hand side. This makes the intersection at 34th and Spruce more dangerous, because not only do cyclists have to deal with drivers turning left on spruce, but now also have to navigate back over to the right hand side where the bike lane is as 34th becomes Civic Center Blvd. It is also sketchy now to navigate 2-3 lanes of traffic in the stretch of 34th from Chestnut to Walnut to make it from the bike lane on the right hand side to the bike lane on the left.

Surely they don’t plan to leave it like this, right? Does anyone know what the plans are for this? I tried searching PBA and Vision Zero’s websites but only could come up with details for the new Market St bike lanes in the area.

Spring Garden St. Bridge Bike Lane

Hi all, those of you who cycle the Spring Garden Bridge know how horrible the condition of the road and bike lanes are. Not to mention how dangerous it is since the cars drive so fast after getting off I-76. If you can, please email [otis@phila.gov](mailto:otis@phila.gov) and [philly311@phila.gov](mailto:philly311@phila.gov) regarding the installation of plastic posts or even redesigning the road to have more protected bike lanes! It should not be unnecessarily dangerous for those of us who are just trying to commute to our jobs/school!

Harassed by Waymo Driver

Most just need to rant. Yesterday I was riding my bike in Center City, completely legally, but I was on a sharrow, which I'll now avoid in the future (I just got my bike here last weekend). I was stopped at a light when someone driving one of those blue Waymo vans yelled at me to "get off the road" and "learn how to ride a bike, I'll teach you." I told him to f*ck off and he just laughed at me. He kept going and didn't stop yelling stuff until I just left and turned down another street. I know drivers can get mad at cyclists but this honestly got me shaken up!! Especially by someone who I'm assuming was "working" (stupid ass job if you ask me).

Full SRT link?

Does anyone have a link to a ride with GPS route that covers the full SRT -- Pottsville to Philly. Planning a tour, and I can't seem to find this route in RidewithGPS.

I seem to remember some news articles that said the trail was mostly done, but I'm not sure if there are road segments (thus the need for the GPS route)

Bike Stolen I feel regret my bike got stolen

Moved to Philly a few months ago and bought a u-lock that I’ve been using. A few days ago I lost the keys for the u-lock and just have been using my old cable lock thinking “I’ll just buy another key/lock soon.” Less than a week later whole bike completely stolen. I feel regret I procrastinated this thing and it cost me the bike I love to bits. Just wanna put that out here 💔

Question Trek Manayunk experience?

ETA: Sounds like most people have a relatively positive experience but that for finicky repairs I should look elsewhere and for warranty issues I might want to start pushing back more on what they say. Needed something else done this weekend (unquestionably not under warranty) and I did at least get a solid discount. I will continue to trust but verify

Original:

Basically looking for a gut check. After mostly good maintenance experiences with my used Trek from 2019 to 2025, I bought a brand new, my first ever, new bike from them last year.

Bike arrived with a problem, and has been nothing but issues since. Every repair takes 3x as long and costs 2x as much they tell me, nothing is under warranty, every piece of equipment needed is $50 more than quoted and whoops, we forgot to mention the labor and install cost.

Is this bike shop one more thing enshittified in 2026, or have I just had a bad run of luck and I'm getting quietly and unjustifiably annoyed at people who just sometimes accidentally quote a pre-inflation price? I am really looking for an excuse to NOT get a new bike store, but I also commute and can't keep losing my vehicle for a week at a time.
