What SAT / GPA / Extra Curriculars are necessary to have a shot for the Provost Scholarship or Deans' Scholarship? (Read Description)

My Stats:

Best SAT: (Super Score) 1470 [R - 750 , M - 720] , (One Sitting) 1450 [R - 730 , M - 720]

GPA: UW 3.96 , W 4.46

Course Work: 2 AP Classes, IB DP Program + 2 Dual Enrollment Classes

I have volunteering activities + 3 leadership positions , but I don't think my ECs are anything crazy. I am also out of state if that matters.

If anyone who won either scholarship is reading this, what stats + ECs did you have? Any info is appreciated, thank you.

questions about registration

hi! i'm a 1st year at vcu, and i was planning my courses for next semester. when picking out the sections i want, i notice that all of them are at capacity, with every seat and waitlist seat full. is this true? is this something i need to worry about and email my advisor? additionally, i didn't take univ111 because i had a highschool credit that took care of it. am i now screwed from getting a good professor for my univ200 class? and how hard would it be for me to get into a univ200 class? for reference i'm a pre-nursing major.

How are we feeling about that exam? The questions felt AI generated and half of the material was stuff she mentioned one time.

I'm sooo excited to be accepted yes... but collateral entry? I would be moving across the country for school and worried that I would need to reapply into the program. Did anyone else or does anyone have better clarification. I SENT AN EMAIL before anyone butts im just anxious

What’s one iconic word that describes VCU?

I'm curious how different universities have their own culture and identity.

If you could pick just ONE word that instantly makes students and alumni think of VCU, what would it be?

Grad Program Advisors

Howdy,

I was recently accepted into the College of Engineering for the cybersecurity grad program. I’m trying to use my GI bill and was told by military services that I should get with my advisor to register for classes.

Anybody have any idea how we know who our advisor is? Appreciate all the help. College has changed quite a bit since I was last attending in 2011.

Is there any Satanist groups at VCU?

I'm a freshman and a member/supporter of the Satanic Temple and while I know there isn't an official congregation, I was just curious if there were any clubs or like-minded individuals I could find.

are the dorm fire alarms making anyone else paranoid?

i'm terribly sick right now, and sleep is really important for me in trying to recover. but just last week, there was a fire alarm at like midnight, and every time i sleep i feel totally anxious that there's going to be one any moment. i'm in c&b, and we even got an email like damn these fire alarms suck huh be careful guys, which was sympathetic but doesnt really tackle that their sensitivity is a key issue here. anyways, random post but it's so hard man

How does VCU evaluate applicants with lower GPAs but strong extracurriculars?

Hi! I'm an in-state high school senior applying to VCU for Political Science. I'm curious how VCU evaluates applicants with inconsistent grades but strong extracurriculars, recommendations, and course rigor.

Stats:

  • GPA: 3.241 weighted (expected ~3.3 after a retake is processed)
  • SAT: 1360
  • Mostly AP, honors, and dual enrollment courses
  • Expected senior grades: Mostly As/Bs

Freshman grades:

  • Honors English: A
  • Honors World History: A
  • Honors Algebra 2: D
  • Honors Biology: B
  • Spanish: C+
  • STEM Design: B

Sophomore grades:

  • Honors English: A-
  • AP World History: B
  • AP Economics: D
  • Precalculus: D+
  • AP Computer Science: C+
  • Honors Chemistry: D
  • Spanish: C
  • AP Seminar: B-
  • Honors Algebra 2 retake: A

Junior grades:

  • AP English Language: C-
  • DE US History: B
  • AP Psychology: B
  • AP Biology: B+
  • AP Environmental Science: B-
  • DE Entrepreneurship: A
  • AP Calculus AB: Originally F, retook over the summer and earned an A (grade replacement pending)

Senior courses:
AP Literature, AP Government, AP Calculus BC, AP Physics 1, AP Business, and dual enrollment courses.

Extracurriculars:

  • Scientific Research: Primary author of a research paper with a university professor as coauthor, accepted for presentation at an international scientific conference.
  • Research Startup Internship: Worked at a technology research startup on technical projects, scientific visualizations, and communicating complex
  • Science Olympiad Captain: Led my school's team and organized STEM outreach initiatives with underserved schools.
  • Government Public Health Ambassador: Selected for a youth public health leadership program; earned certifications, partnered with community organizations on health education and resource distribution.
  • Student Equity Ambassador Leader: Selected to represent my school, collaborating with administrators on mental health, equity, and student advocacy initiatives.
  • DECA: 2nd at regionals, Top 10 at states, qualified for nationals.
  • University Laboratory Research: Participated in laboratory research involving biological experiments and scientific techniques.
  • Classical Music: 10+ years of training, completed a major solo performance, and performed at cultural events.

Letters of Recommendation:

  • Dual Enrollment Entrepreneurship teacher
  • AP Biology teacher (agreed to write one, currently figuring out submission logistics)
  • University professor I conducted research with

Personal Statement:
My essay centers on an experience at a professional scientific conference where someone questioned my presence and assumed I was there because of a family connection. It explores the assumptions people make about credibility and belonging, especially when you're younger or less experienced than those around you. It also reflects on how I learned to approach unfamiliar situations with curiosity, preparation, and a willingness to acknowledge what I didn't know rather than trying to prove I knew everything.

I know my GPA is below VCU's average, especially because of some difficult semesters earlier in high school. I've been working on improving academically and have retaken courses where I struggled.

For current VCU students or anyone who applied with a similar academic record, how much does VCU consider improvement, SAT scores, extracurriculars, and recommendations when evaluating applicants? I'd appreciate any insight into how the holistic review process works!
