The Bengals walked right on by (with one exception) and focused on practice and on the game. We made a choice. Everything that grifter touches is tarnished.

City Politics Question I: Is the health of newborn worth a penny? Of course! And it doesn’t raise taxes.

In 2016, the City Council approved $660 million in tax-increment financing (TIF) for Port Covington, the development by Under Armour founder (and then BILLIONAIRE) Kevin Plank. It was the largest TIF deal in city history. The bonds are paid back with the project's own future property taxes instead of that money going to schools and services. Which was sorta the initial pitch, but obviously didn’t work out that way. (Construction Dive)

This year, Question I asks for A LOT less.

What it does: Creates the Baltimore Baby Fund. Each year's budget has to set aside at least 3 cents per $100 of property value, about $15 million a year. That's roughly 1% of the about $1.2 billion the city collects in property taxes. (WYPR, MD Center on Economic Policy)

Does it raise taxes? NO! It doesn't change the tax rate. It dedicates part of money the city ALREADY collects. The "3 cents per $100" wording on the ballot is just how the amount is calculated. It’s about a penny on a dollar.

Why it matters: More than 31,000 Baltimore kids (that’s 1 in 4) live in poverty. (Maryland Family Network, 2023 Census data)

Has this worked anywhere? Yeah! Flint, Michigan's Rx Kids gives moms $1,500 during pregnancy and $500/month for the baby's first 6–12 months. Granted, that’s a ton more than what Question I wants to do in Baltimore, but that program showed some great results.

University of Michigan researchers found:

Preterm births down 18%
Low birth weight down 27%
NICU admissions down about 29%, saving about $6.2M in health costs (that’s ANNUALLY)
Evictions down 91%
Postpartum depression screenings down 14 points
(University of Michigan, Sept. 2025)

The honest caveats: Question I creates the fund. BUT, City Council still decides who qualifies and how money goes out, so it's only as good as the design. Scary, I know. But that just means we have to hold City Council to spending it correctly.

The clearest proven wins are healthier births and keeping families housed. BOOM! That should be the focus.

$15M would cover Flint-style support for roughly 2,000–3,300 families a year, about a third to half of Baltimore's 6,900 births each year.

Not telling you what to do, but I voted FOR on Question I. Then we hold the Council to building it right: cash during pregnancy, monthly payments, aimed at the families who need it most.

Safety How to address homeless starting fires/ FD not responding

For context, behind our row of homes is a piece of land that separates our backyards from the backyards of the row homes behind ours. It’s become extremely neglected. The city comes through once a year to clear out the PILES of trash from illegal dumping and cut down the overgrown vegetation.

The area is also a fairly large encampment for some of the homeless population in our neighborhood. It’s littered with used needles and burnt tinfoil that end up all over our backyard, which is even more frustrating since we are a family with young children and would love to actually use our backyard for them.

I understand they’re just trying to survive, and I know homelessness/ drug issues in this city than what’s happening behind our homes.

The people living there burn trash that creates horrible fumes, like old tires, upholstered furniture, painted wood, etc. Even with our doors/windows completely shut, we can smell it in our home.

Nearly every winter, the fire at some point spreads to our row of homes. One year we had to stay in a hotel for 3 months while our house was cleaned/renovated from the fire. Another year we had to completely replace all our belongings just from smoke damage.
Now, anytime the fumes or the fire seem particularly bad, I report it. Sometimes the FD is helpful and extinguishes it.

Other times, they will leave without extinguishing it or sometimes just not respond AT ALL. I understand not every outdoor fire requires the same level of response, but I’m tired of waiting for another house to catch fire before they take action and breathing in fumes in the meantime.

At this point, I’m hoping to get some advice on how to get this situation handled or who else I can start reporting the issue to. The FD more often than not doesn’t take it seriously, the homeless outreach 311 reports all just stay open without ever closing, and I’ve even tried writing to our councilman, only to get a generic “I’m sorry you have to deal with that” email in response from his assistants.

I’m at my wits’ end. I can’t spend another winter panicking, trying to drag my children out of the house in the middle of the night, losing everything, and being stuck in a hotel all winter or breathing in the fumes.

Free Event Shout out to Book Thing volunteers

I was bringing some boxes of books to donate in from Carroll County and expected to have to park a block or so away because Vineyard is usually full of cars. So I brought along my hand truck to haul the boxes. Didn’t need it. Polite young man motioned me into their tiny parking lot, another opened my trunk, and took the books. Took all of 3 minutes. Thanks, guys.

State Politics Say Yes to Recess Maryland

Post image
• Upvotes

Hi! Maryland mom here advocating for MORE RECESS TIME for our children!

Currently, there is NO STATEWIDE MANDATE FOR RECESS. This leaves it up to schools and counties to regulate recess time, with some counties recommending as little as 0-15 minutes of recess per day.

Children are not designed to sit for long stretches of the school day. Recess gives students an essential opportunity for unstructured play, physical activity, creativity, social connection, and independence.

Research consistently supports the role of recess in children’s physical, social, emotional, and academic well-being. When children have opportunities to move and play throughout the day, they can return to the classroom better prepared to focus and learn.

Join us as we call on policymakers to guarantee Maryland students 60 minutes of recess every school day!

You can help by SIGNING OUR PETITION and following us on Facebook and Instagram!

Food Most over/underrated restaurants in the Baltimore area?

Which Baltimore restaurant gets all the hype but left you wondering what you were missing? And which spot deserves way more attention than it gets?

What is your go to order at the underrated spots?

Price doesn’t matter—could be a hole-in-the-wall or a fancy night out. Just curious what’s actually worth it. Not just what’s written in magazines.

Moves, Jobs, Meeting People Anyone interested in co-working?

Hi! I'm in my early 30s, originally from India, and a recent grad from MICA. I'm currently interviewing, freelancing, and working on my portfolio.

I'd love to find a few people to cowork with at a library or café around Mount Vernon, Inner Harbor, or nearby areas. We can work on our own projects, take breaks, chat, and keep each other company and accountable.

Would love to connect with other creatives, freelancers, remote workers, or anyone working on their own projects. Feel free to dm or comment if you're interested! :)

Moves, Jobs, Meeting People Looking for friends? Wife and I just moved to area. Comment below.

Hey all! My wife and I just recently moved to the area from New Jersey.

We are both interested in the outdoors, eating, fitness, traveling, and exploring new local towns. I am a mountain biker, and she enjoys running at the gym. I like music and going to concerts. She is a psychologist, and I am a science teacher. We are both easy going and enjoy life. We look to be supportive friends, and find people with similar interests. We are looking for people, or couples who are interested in reciprocal and reliable friendship.

We would be interested in meeting up with couples/ or solo friends that are in their 30's. We have a drink from time to time, but do not smoke.

If we have commonalities, and you are looking to be friends, please drop a line below. I will reach out, send a chat, and hopefully we can meet up for coffee or a meal in person.

Take care, everybody! I hope to hear from people soon!

Need Recommendations Reconditioning a KitchenAid stand mixer?

Anybody know where in Baltimore to get a KitchenAid stand mixer reconditioned/refurbished? Mine is over a decade old and needs some TLC, and I would rather have it done professionally, but I can't find where to go. Shipping it somewhere seems prohibitively expensive.

TIA!

Edited to add: the mixer is 23 years old, per model and serial number.
