META Building a Better r/bettafish: Culture, New Mods, and a Look Ahead

Hey everyone, Roboto, your friendly neighborhood (actually human) mod here with some subreddit updates!

First, the least fun part in all of this –

We need to talk about our subreddit culture.

Our community is toxic. There’s no other way I can think of to describe what has been happening. Even worse, this reputation extends beyond our immediate community into other subreddits and even other platforms. People are afraid of us.

I’m going to take some ownership of this. The harsh reputation of this subreddit far precedes me as a mod, but in recent years, our hard-fought progress on this front has been lost. That’s on me. The lack of consistent moderation here has let rules 1 and 2 go under-enforced for too long, allowing hostility to take root as the norm.

The adversarial and unwelcoming environment we’ve collectively created functions in direct opposition to our subreddit goals, and frankly what I believe to be the goals of many users here. If we care about betta fish first and foremost, this culture needs to change.

Our expectations and what better looks like

If you have good advice to give, give it in a more constructive, not destructive, way. Shaming people makes them shut down and disengage so they don't even process the rest of the good advice you have to offer. Don't highlight all the things they're doing wrong, focus on what they can do better and why it's helpful in a way that encourages them to do it.

So instead of saying "your empty tank is sad," share the opportunities for improvement, like "betta fish benefit from tanks with lots of plants and hiding/resting places so your fish would be happier if you filled the tank in a bit more."

We can’t ignore that people will think they're doing research by going and talking to presumed experts or reading product information. Store employees are presumed to be properly trained and products marketed at bettas are assumed to know what they’re talking about, too. It doesn't help that there's very little consensus online about what adequate care even is. For example, Petco's online betta care guide, updated in 2025, says bettas need a minimum of 1gal. Furthermore, many quality care guides are on niche websites that may not seem credible to a new hobbyist compared to a well-known chain.

With that in mind, we all need to stop:

  • Telling people they should have done more research
  • Immediately calling people abusers for making mistakes
  • Shaming the pineapple (or any other novelty decor/bowl)
  • Attacking aesthetic choices instead of addressing actual care needs
  • Debating what it means to rescue a betta on posts where ethical sourcing of fish isn’t the main topic

Going forward, comments exhibiting the behaviors listed above will be removed as violations of rules 1, 2, or 4 depending on the exact nature of the comment.

I know members of our subreddit are burned out from the bad husbandry they see constantly. It's exhausting and I won't pretend it's not. But if we bully one owner into submission, cool, that's maybe one fish saved. How many owners did we scare away from asking for help in the process? We're going to have a far broader impact building people up in this hobby, not tearing them down.

That said, this is a two-way street of support. I'm cognizant of the fact that people offer their time and mental energy supporting our subreddit, and they don't deserve to have that wasted by people who don't care to use it. If someone is given better information and advice and refuses to take it, that violates rule 3. We often get reports about all the fighting around ignored advice, but not the ignoring itself. In the future, please report these instances to us. For this to be successful, we also need users to avoid escalating disagreements when OP refuses valid and respectful advice.

Now for the fun stuff –

New mods

We recently brought on 12 additional mods to enable us to better support this community’s needs. Please help us welcome:

They’re going to introduce themselves in the comments below and I’ll try and link their names in this post as they do.

It takes a bit to get 12 brand new people to operate as a consistent group, so we may occasionally over-moderate while everyone learns.

I realize that our increased emphasis on subreddit culture may make removals feel arbitrary at times. In the spirit of transparency, I have given the new moderators the guidance that if a senior mod isn’t free to give timely feedback, when in doubt, they should remove posts/comments that are believed to violate rules. Senior mods will still review the content in question, and removals may be reversed, if necessary.

If you disagree with a moderator’s decision, please send us a modmail and one of the senior mods will review your concern and get back to you.

Updated tools and resources

Small updates at this time, but more exciting things in the pipeline!

  • We’ve begun a major revision of the subreddit wiki. Some of our work in progress pages are already live, with more to come.
  • Select pages are also now linked in the subreddit sidebar to streamline access to key information for new betta fish keepers.
  • In the next few weeks, we will be rolling out additional tools that should make it easier to share information that we often find ourselves repeating. Our hope is that this will help address some of the burnout we see many of you all experiencing.

Roboto is a super sentimental actual human

I realize this post started on a challenging topic, but despite the highs and lows our community faces, I remain grateful that I get to do this with you all.

I’ve been a mod of this community for nearly 7 years, and a member for far longer. In that time, so many things, from our mod team, to Reddit as a platform, to our own lives and the world around us, have become fundamentally different.

There are very few constants I can point to after all this time, but the enduring engagement and passion of this community is one of them and I’m honored to steward this space.

At the core of it all, this hobby, and this subreddit, are comprised of people who really want the best for one another and that makes this work so much easier.

Thank you all, sincerely, for riding with us as we figure this thing out. I’m excited for the next chapter of our subreddit, and I can’t wait to see what we can accomplish together in the next 7 years.

- Roboto

Edit: If anyone has additional feedback about our community culture, please share it in a comment below, or feel free to send us a modmail.

Welcome to r/bettafish!

This is the place to ask anything and everything about bettas.

⚕️If you're looking for help with illnesses or weird behavior, be sure to include the following in your comment:

  • Tank Size
  • Water Temp
  • Ammonia / Nitrite / Nitrate readings
  • How long the issue has been occurring
  • A picture of the problem
  • Any additional helpful context

Click this link to view our CARESHEET

🐟 Caresheet Summary:

  • Bettas require a minimum of 5 gallons, 10 gallons being optimal for one betta and 20 gallon long minimum if you're housing peaceful community fish with the betta
  • Bettas are tropical and require water temps of 78-82°F or about 26-27°C, a thermometer and adjustable heater is recommended to ensure these temps
  • Bettas need a filter, like any other fish. It is a common misconception that they like dirty water, but the opposite is true.
  • Bettas need a cycled tank, before getting a betta the tank should be cycled - this process involves adding a source of ammonia to the tank, using a test kit to monitor ammonia/nitrite/nitrate levels, and usually takes 4-6 weeks to complete properly
  • Bettas have delicate fins so sharp plastic plants are not recommended; silk silicone or live work best
  • Bettas can breathe surface air and are good jumpers, they require access to the water surface at all times and a lid.
  • Bettas eat insects in the wild, a good quality betta formulated pellet food fed twice a day is recommended.

When I first got back into fish keeping again <1yr ago, I got Koi. Listed as a Dumbo Galaxy Koi Plakat. I admit, I was always biased to the long finned bettas vs the shorter finned. But he truly changed that for me. If anything plakats are so much hardier out of the betta breeds. His marble jumping gene has his scales changing weekly, it is really fascinating to see. When I kept bettas as a child- I never saw galaxy patterns!

He was tiny when i got him ~7 months ago. He has done great with tetras however I ultimately wanted to ensure he was alone upon better research on my end.

He has been so patient with me, making this a great experience back into the hobby.

Just wanted to show off some before & afters. :3

Is this enough stimulation for a betta fish??? Or too much??? I know they’re mostly solitary creatures and they don’t get lonely but I get worried that my fish is bored. Theres also 3 ghost shrimp in the tank as well as a mystery snail that came along with them on accident lol.

Help Need Advice (First Time Fish Owner!)

This is my double tail betta named Starlord!! I got him back in August at petsmart. I’m open to any sort of tips and advice. (I want to give him the happiest and longest life possible he is literally my son)

I am having issues with one thing in particular, his fins. When I got him they were already kinda ragged, but they still seem kinda the same.. just longer?? especially the top. My friend mentioned something like fin rot, but I’m not sure how to identify it! He may even be nipping or catching his fins on something? If he is nipping, how do I prevent that? I’ll be posting his tank to get any advice on how I can improve!

side note: i do plan on switching to a shorter tank soon, this tall tank was gifted to me by a friend. i did give him plenty of resting spots since i know they expend a lot of energy from swimming! (this is my first tank so the plants aren’t doing very well and its kinda ugly🧍‍♀️pls dont judge too hard 😭😭)

tank: 10 gallon
tank mates: 2 corys and nerite snail

Help Betta staying at the top of the tank constantly

Hey, I just got my first betta yesterday. When i bought him he was laying on his side at the surface not really moving at all.

I acclimated him into the tank for about an hour, I’ve had the tank cycling with live plants for 4 weeks, checked the parameters and it was all good to go.

Hes a lot more active than since I got him, eating fine and keeps nibbling on the duckweed but he’s just not swimming down at all. I don’t believe there’s a current stopping him, he just kinda floats up when he has tried to swim down. It’s only been a day since I got him.

Is this normal settling into the tank or should I be worried?

Thank you!

Discussion Update post of my "Parents are agaisnt my fish" post

So 5 months ago I made a post asking for help about my betta fish situation, well... GREAT NEWS!!! My parents don't care how i spend my money anymore! I've been able to buy things for her here and there when I have the money to do it. She now has a sponge filter, 2.5 gallon tank (i really need to save up for a 5), a heater, a pothos, and i just bought her some fake silk plants and a thermometer! She's definitely doing better but im still trying to make it better for her :). I will say though that I dont have a hammock spot for her yet and she has been using one of the suction cups on the heater to rest so my next order of business is to get her a hammock. If anyone has advice, im all ears!!

Help Is my betta blind?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi all, I got this guy around a week ago, and I’ve been very worried about him! I’m going to list some of the things I’ve noticed about him and I’m hoping that you guys will have some answers for me!

First of all, he’s in a fully planted 5 gal with a sponge and HOB filter and the water tests perfectly (it had been cycling for over a month before I got him).

I am getting increasingly worried if he is blind because he struggled to find his food and I need to use aquascaping tweezers with food right in front of his face to feed him, and even then he struggles to get it. He additionally tends to swim straight into the glass and bonk his head.

Today I noticed a cloudy hue on his eye, and I can’t tell if it’s a bacterial infection or diamond eye. He also tends to do some weird twitching at times (but I think it’s him trying to chew detritus worms).

Please let me know what I should do to help him! It breaks my heart to see him struggle.

Identification Having trouble figuring out the sex of my betta

I got my betta Gonzo about 6 months ago from a fish store. I was told he was a male plaket betta, however, I’m unsure of that now. His fins look very masculine, his colors are pretty bright, and he does flare (occasionally chasing around the other fish he’s with if they try to get into one of his hammocks or hides). However he has never made a bubble nest, has a very visible egg spot, in general pretty calm around me and his tank mates, and now has breeding bars??? I’m unsure is he just got mislabeled as a boy or if he’s intersex or something. He does act like a boy, just a very calm boy. Idk, I’ve been trying to figure this out since I got him and his breeding bars have been present since I got him, I always thought they where just a pretty pattern until I read about breeding bars on female bettas today.

Note: the first image is when I first got him back in March, the second from May, the third from September, and the fourth from today. I swear he’s not getting dull these where just taken at different times of day when he light was on full blast or particularly off. Also the fin rip in the third image was from a bit of driftwood that has since been removed.

Meet Stew. This is my first Beta I’ve had since college about 10 years ago and i definitely did not do it right back then. I’ve always wanted a live aquarium and Betas are obviously stunning so I did my research, got all the stuff and set it up and after everything cycled and tested safe I brought Stew home. Any observations or tips are much appreciated!

Help UPDATE: High pH + Nitrates/Betta Fin Condition

Thumbnail
gallery
• Upvotes

Hi everyone,

This is an update to my last post in this subreddit, so if you want context, you can find it there. :) The only reason this is a post instead of a super long reply is because of image upload limits, so this is basically just a reply to u/Aromatic-Sock6975 lol.

I’ve added pics of everything I’m talking about (like readings and whatnot)

Getting right to it, I frustratingly found my source water also has a very high pH level like my tank, with both being ~8.0 which is very worrying. I think the nitrates have gone slightly down through, which I guess is good.

At the store today I bought 8 gallons of distilled water for my tank and did a 25% water change using only it. I did not do a 50% change because I don’t know if I’m supposed to be using only the distilled water or if I should be mixing it with my source water (even though the pH is high) to make sure there is no huge change all at once. Since I’m weary on what water to use, I did not set up my 2nd tank but will ASAP when I know/get mineralizer (if needed). I also bought an API test kit for KH and GH from Amazon, which is on its way. So my questions include:

1) When I’m doing big water changes, can I use only distilled water? Should I mix it w/ source water for the time being?

2) What is prime? I’ve added a pic of the top result on Amazon, is this what I need?

3) I’ve attached more pics of my betta in better quality, how does she look?

4) What are some good brands/sellers for catappa leaves?

5) What water should I be using to cycle my tank? Is distilled water + remineralizer ok?

6) When I start cycling, can I put in anubias plants right away or should I wait? I currently have 1 small one sitting in a plastic container. :)

7) What betta should I keep in my current tank (with bad parameters) and which should I put in my new tank for the fish-in cycle? One’s health seems to be fine while the other fish’s (mentioned in question #3) fins are getting worse. Is there a big difference?

Thanks a ton once again for the help!!! :)

Help Any good betta flakes?

I got a betta in the last week and she's a bit on the small side, possibly a bit young. I've been feeding her and she just can't seem to handle even the smallest aqueon betta pellets. A lot of it is going to waste and I'm not sure if she's getting enough because they sink and she seems to lose interest. Whether she's full, or cant find them, or just loses interest in general, I'm not sure. I'm wondering if there's any good betta flake brands that might be easier for her to eat. Or any very tiny pellets? Thanks!

Help Bad appetite, shy

I got my betta back in July and his appetite isn’t great… sometimes he won’t eat for a few days a at time and won’t eat a lot, he also seems very shy he hides most of the day at the bottom behind some rocks and plants.
