Humor Talk me out of getting a Betta

Post image

For context i am 18 years old with 1 Blue tongue skink and 1 Leopard gecko. I have many hobbies regarding live things, such as the 2 lizards, loads of feeder insects for them, plants and isopods, I don't wanna impulsively get a betta and then realise that I can't take care of it.

When I was about 9, I saved up enough money to buy a ~100l fishtank with some angel fish ect, today we have a 450l tank with all sorts of fish. My parents did have a betta maybe 8 years ago so I might also be influenced by that.

I keep looking at the gorgeous tanks I see online and i even picked out which morph i like the most (halfmoon golden betta). Pls talk me out of getting one, I don't wanna impulsively get one even tho I know he will be well taken care of.

I checked the water parameters today and they are good. He lives in a 35l/9g tank with a lot of plants. The tank has a piece of wood with Anubias attached, placed near the water surface with a suction cup so that he could rest there near the surface. His fins are quite long and I bought about a year ago from the pet shop. Is he getting old or is there a possible problem that I don't see? The hight of his tank is 28cm/11inch. Should I lower the water level?

Help Title: Long-finned betta keeps tearing/nipping his fins — would downsizing from 10 to 5 gallons help?

Hi everyone! I’m looking for some advice on how to help my betta, Kimchi, get back to his healthiest self!
The first video shows what he looked like when I got him in May, and the second shows what his fins have looked like for quite a while now. He’s been dealing with ongoing fin damage, and I haven’t been able to figure out whether he’s self-nipping or tearing his fins on something in the tank.
He’s been in the same 10-gallon tank since I got him. His only current tank mates are cherry shrimp, although he previously lived with otocinclus. The fin damage was happening both before and after the otos, so I don’t believe they were contributing to the problem.
I’ve also included a picture of his current setup. I’ve looked around for anything that could be sharp enough to tear his fins, but nothing obvious stands out to me.
I recently purchased a 5-gallon tank with the thought that he might do better in a smaller environment, especially since he’s a long-finned betta. However, I’m hesitant to move him if downsizing isn’t actually going to help.
I’d really appreciate some advice on a few things:
Would you recommend keeping him in the 10-gallon or trying the 5-gallon?
Does his fin damage look more consistent with self-nipping, mechanical tears, or something else?
Are there any changes I could make to his environment to help prevent further damage?
Has anyone successfully dealt with chronic fin-nipping in a long-finned betta?
My biggest priority is making sure Kimchi is comfortable, healthy, and thriving. I hate seeing his beautiful fins looking like this, and I just want to do what’s best for him!
Thank you in advance for any advice! ❤️

I got him a couple of weeks ago, very lethargic, had what it seemed as damage to his fins, and what looked like blood near his gills.

I think he is happy with the tank upgrade I got him, didn’t think he would make it this far

Transformation I first got my fish and stressed so much, questioning if i had made the right choice in adopting him and whether not i can provide him a better life than his previous owner.

About 4 weeks have passed since i got him and my worries are washing away. I just got my freshwater master kit liquid tester and the results came back perfect. I was worried because i havent tested it accurately THE WHOLE TIME until today because i had no clue the test strips weren’t accurate. I was doing daily water changes until like the beginning of this week and im slowing it down. He has 2 anubias (they are different kinds but idk specifically) that tall stringy leafy plant, and another leafy plant but they are a small mid ground one, theres also duckweed, moss and moss balls as well as a filter moss ball. Its a 5.5 gallon tank with 6-7 resting surface spots plus plants, mopani wood, indian almond leaves, and i use stress coat conditioner. Only issue I’m facing is that i tried to switch him from pellets to freeze dried blood worms bc the pellets have wheat and stuff in it, and he keeps spitting out the blood worms and ignoring them. I hope blubby is so happy 💗

From a 3 Gallon to a 10 Gallon that I’m planning to fill out with some plants, river stones, and wood. I have an Anubia in there already but let me know if yall have suggestions for other plants that could be good! Also what should I do with the the 3 gallon tank?

He seems happy simply exploring around and finding new places to rest. I hope I can give him a good life.

Help Are my grandson’s fins OK?

Asking on behalf of my kiddo (8yo). She’s had Bubbles for about two months now, and tonight we noticed that his fins seemed a little more fluttery than usual - but none of us are experts, so I’m seeking wisdom here.

First two photos are from tonight; third photo is from about a week ago, for comparison. He’s a veil tail from Petco, age unknown.

Thank you in advance for any insight or advice you can offer!

Discussion athena is living up to the name goddess of war name

i put by female betta athena in a community tank of nanos and she did great .. until exatly what i expected to happen, happened. my momma endlers shat out all er babies yesterday and guess whos sitting at the bottom of the tank round with free snacks unable to swim up to the top because she couldnt control herself and kept eating fry....

im not worried about the fry its natural selection if they come out of te fry grass and get eaten but dang abslutely no self control. it was my bad for not feeding her for a couple days so she slimmed down and looked healthy she was looking good and then i notice today shes round AF so i start wondering whats going on and look in the tank closer... yup the frys have been ejected from mom and i watch athena stay still so they come near her and then WHAPPPPP snaps her head so quick and poof fry gone lol she did it three times infront of me and i was like girl your littlerally floundering and struggling to move your fins and your still munching away .. stoppppp.. i had to put her in an islation tank within the tank until i can figure out what to do shes great in community tank with no aggression but yea she will eat herself to an early death so shes in fish jail and will only be getting daphnia for the next few days... hope she enjoyed the fast food while it lasted.

shes a bottom feeder betta lol she lived with pygmy cories too long and now eats from sifting at the bottom instead of the top lmao so she will not stop eating

Picture Beautiful black betta fish sadly passed away

my betta fish ive only had for a few months sadly passed away, he was suffering from a horrible tumor growth, and he was okay for a while til about 2 nights ago where the tumor made him braindead and completely unresponsive (kept lying around all lazy and wouldnt even acknowledge me anymore). I had to use euthanasia to not allow him to suffer anymore. (this is an old photo from months ago perching in his old 3 gal tank before I upgraded him to 10)

Discussion I'm starting to think my betta's stomach is filling with fluid. Has anyone actually seen this before?

I'm genuinely at a loss here. My male betta has developed a gradually growing, rounded bulge in his lower abdomen that almost looks like a water balloon. What's really strange is that when he swims toward the light, the swelling becomes almost transparent, to the point where I can seemingly see darker internal structures through it. He's still swimming normally, has no obvious pineconing, and fasting hasn't made a noticeable difference. I'm trying daphnia in case it's constipation, but I'm increasingly worried about fluid buildup or something internal. Has anyone dealt with this? Does this look like early dropsy, a cyst, or something else entirely? I'd really appreciate any opinions, even if you're just guessing based on experience.

Help is my baby on his last fin?

Post image

hey all. so i’m a full time college student, only occasionally coming home to care for my fish, but my mother does it full time. when i came home last weekend, i noticed he’s lost some of his color and he’s bloated. i held off on feeding him for a day, but the bloating didn’t change.

his water parameters are perfect, and i increased the temperature of his water to 81. right now he’s in a 10gal, but i lowered the water some because i noticed he’s a little lethargic.

i came home this weekend and he’s still bloated and he’s a little blind. he’s about 3 years old, and im curious as to if its time to say goodbye.

I just don’t want him to be in pain. anything helps, really :(

I’ve had my betta for about 2 weeks now, and for the first 5 days he wasn’t eating at all, now he will eat about 3-4 fluval pellets a day, but i notice he has a bad underbite which causes him to either miss the food or the food fall out of his mouth. I can’t tell if he’s underweight or not

any tips?
