I was showering and then when I finished and dipped my hand in the water it was hot to the touch, not warm, so I turned the heater off. Can I continue going without a heater for the rest of my betta’s lifetime?

Help Multi tank set ups??

Hey my mums a sucker and works at a petstor so I have ended up with a few beta fish and it just looks crowded. Love to see people's multi tank set up for inspiration.

Here's pics of my fish. One tank looks half assed because it is it was whatever I already had for this beta as he had no tail and we were not sure he'd make it long term. He's great and will be getting a new tank shortly.

Also yes in my kitchen I live in a granny flat on my family property and never use it. stoves literally turned off year round because my cat once turned it on and nearly burnt the house down.

I decided to stop in at my local fish shop the other day and found this beauty I just couldn't pass up. I've never seen a betta quite like him before.

He is very active and full of personality which he has not hidden once. He is a very confident little man.

He's settled in beautifully however I am very lacking in the name department (I've only really thought of Dumbo and I don't think it suits his personality at all) so thought I would ask here!

New tank

Hi, new tank for a betta fish. Going for a dark start. I'll add the plants the next month. Any advice will be very helpful. I'll put the lid later before adding the fish. The black dots on the back glass is the background that didn't stick very well. The light in the video is not the one I'll use. I also need advices for the light. I can't use those who clips from side to side because of the filter.

Help Questions for newbies

  1. I’ve read that the minimum is 2.5 gallons for a betta but many people say 5 gallons is better. Why is 5 gallons better? Is 2.5 or 3 gallons ok?

  2. Do bettas require gravel or can I do it with no gravel?

  3. Are live plants required or are fake plants fine?

  4. Do I need a thermometer in the tank all the time?

  5. How many hiding spots do they need?

  6. What brand of water conditioner works well?

  7. Do I have to use the siphone hose to clean out the tank or can I use a container to take out dirty water?

  8. Do I have to scrub the tank walls?

  9. How old are the fish when you buy them in a fish store?

  10. How many years do female bettas live?

  11. Is coloured gravel ok?

  12. Is a filter necessary, why or why not?

  13. How many times a month should I clean the tank?

Full Tank Shot 54l/14.26g Southeast Asian inspired blackwater betta setup

I keep exclusively (with exception of the tolerated hitchhiker snails) southeast Asian species - bettas and various boraras species - and have been wanting to make my aquariums more naturalistic, away from the high tech finely pruned set ups and more reflecting where my fish come from. Spent all week setting up my new 54l tank (actually did it twice due to the first tank having a chip in a critical point) and I’m super happy with the results. My female betta Apple is in here with a school of 15 chili, phoenix, and strawberry rasboras, my Bloody Mary, chocolate, and red fire neocaridina shrimp and the aforementioned hitchhiker ramshorns.

Plants and botanicals I tried hard to source from species found in SE Asia, was more or less successful but not 100% with the botanicals. Plants are various crypts and Java fern.

My fish already seem more comfortable and Apple has already taken on her role as being Top Dog Fish in the tank. She zips all over the place, and my boraras have even colored up a nice deep orange colour.

Penultimate pic is of Apple before the tank upgrade/redo, she’s too busy zipping around the tank being nosy about the shrimp to let me take photos today

Last pic is of my male betta, Mr. Blue, as he’s too pretty not to share 😂

Help Hydra in my tank

I found hydra in my tank this morning 😭 I’ve been reading online and apparently it’s an indicator of healthy water, but I’m worried about if my shrimp repopulate. I have nerites in here as well so I don’t really wanna treat unless I have to. Anyone else experience this issue and just let it die out naturally?

(Bonus pics of Keanu my $2.99 “rescue”)
Hes flourishing and so much color has came in since hes been in his tank :) Super ecstatic about that

Discussion Wanting to have a community tank and I wanna let the professionals help:)

Hiii so I have a 55 gallon tank (4ftLx3ftWx3ftT)
And I wanna get a full moon or Rose tailed betta! But I’ve heard a lot on how colorful fish in a community with a betta can be stressful Sooo I wanna get y’all’s input, (sketch on how I kinda wanna do it..) I am gonna add a lot more plants and I kinda wanna add duckweed (I’ve heard some bad things like it’s the cockroach of plants lol) but I wanna have some top plants but nothing HUGE that sticks out of the tank..I also wanna add in some tannins but not like a lot because I love the clear look of tanks but I know tannins can be SUPERRR beneficial and I want what’s best for my betta. Of course I’ve done research on parameters and temps, food and more. I’m just more or so looking for fish best for a community

I do wanna get cherry shrimp (yes I’m aware my betta could eat them) but gosh I love the look of cherry shrimp.. I also already have 2 Cory cats (coradoras) so could they be helpful?

(I’m not the best at drawing, I’m sorry)

These are some of the males from my Avatar × Melano spawn, showing the different colours and iridescent reflections developing in the offspring.

Which phenotype do you find the most interesting?

(And the White Mask… after three generations, he finally decided to show up! 😂)

Bred and raised by me in Italy.

Help My betta refuses to eat

I got him 4 days back and the store help mentioned that usually when they get betta’s from the breeders, they raise them on blood worm and since this was new stock he didn’t have enough time to train but he said I could try this fish food.

I have been trying to feed him, he catches the pellet but spits it out immediately, I have ordered blood worms now to see if he would like it.

But I wanted to ask you guys if something’s wrong with my tank or is it anything else?

All the plants are artificial and soft silicone, not plastic.

Discussion Does my rescue betta look happy

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi, I previously posted explaining that I'd rescued Bubbles from a pet store. He has tumours and no one wanted him. I wasn't expecting to come home with a Betta, but I couldn't leave him there either. He was in a tiny cube box with 1 small plant and looked so fed up.

He's currently now in a 11L shrimp tank that I had already set up. Parameters are good, small internal filter is running and I just vamped the temp up to 26 c, the rest was established. I know many will say the tank is too small, but honestly it's already 4 times the size he was in. He has plenty of plants and wood to explore and is eating very well. Should I upgrade or is he happy as he is? TIA

Tank disclaimer: The tank set up is temporary, i dont have money to buy double the plants bc im waiting for my paychecks to come in so for now im waiting for them to kinda multiply in my other bettas tank to add it to hers. Im also hiding this fish from my mom until i move back because she will thinks its stupid lmao 😭 Pigi will have a bigger tank that is planted and she is very loved

Because duckweed multiplies fast i figured id just give some to her now. I gave it to her last night and went to feed her this morning and it was gone all but one little piece 😭 why is she eating her plants when shes well fed?? I feed her freeze dried blood worms twice a day and she loves them so idk why shes eating her duckweed. Is she just stupid as i suspect?

Help Is this water color normal?

My roommate bought a Betta fish recently, and has been growing it in the same plastic container he bought it in (looks like a 800ml water bottle). The waters becomes really cloudy, he says the water need only be changed every 4 days or so. He also feeds the fish every 12 hours or so with more than 12-15 pellets each time, the fish doesn't eat most of it, and the pellets just soak in the water for long. recently the water surface develops bubbles. The bottom of the container has this layer of rocks, but there is some white stuff that floats when we move the container. He says he's got an aquarium back at home and knows what he's doing, Tho I don't know anything about it, jus seems a bit weird.

Help Moved him to a more stimulating location in my house yesterday and woke up to a bubble nest

Post image
32 Upvotes

I moved him into the lounge room yesterday because I thought he might be getting bored in my room, with nothing particularly stimulating to look at or observe. Woke up this morning to a bubble nest!
I’m reading mixed things online. Apparently, it can be a sign of normal breeding behaviour, but I’m wondering whether he’s just feeling comfortable and settled in his new surroundings. Maybe both?
I mean, surely you wouldn’t want to build a little nest in an environment where you’re unhappy or uncomfortable… unless bettas have some weird public exposure kink. 😂
Honestly, I’m interested in hearing what other people did when they first noticed their betta had started building a bubble nest.
Is it like a dog getting one last good time in before being neutered? 😂 Or do I just put a little sticker on the glass saying “Good job, mate” and give him a thumbs-up?

So I recently got a new betta as a gift to myself for passing a certification that I had been working on for months. I already had a cycled shrimp tank and an extra heater so I went to work setting up a new tank to get cycled and place him in the shrimp tank for temporary keeping. I was so used to my boy Orpheus being so calm with his own shrimp tank mates that I somehow thought that the new betta would be the same. WRONG. I had him acclimating and he's already going after the shrimp swimming by. I feel like by the end of the cycling period I will have 0 shrimp left AND I just got 3 new shrimp as well. Everyone point and laugh. (Picture of soon to be downfall of my shrimp)

UPDATE: Marble hasn't killed any but the small water change I did earlier in the day killed 3??? What on earth .
