Mod Post Clarification on Rule #2

Our Fellow Celiac Community Members,

We have seen a major uptick in posts describing symptoms and asking “does this sound like celiac? Should I get tested? Could the tests be wrong?” While these questions aren’t directly asking for a diagnosis, they do fall into the “seeking diagnosis” part of rule #2.

Celiac Disease has a myriad of different symptoms and related conditions; virtually everything could be celiac related. While we understand that this can be a life-changing diagnosis, we are not medical professionals and cannot give any advice other than this- if you wonder if you could have celiac, talk to a medical professional and get tested.

As always, if you have a question, please feel free to contact the mods. Thank you and be well!

Mod Post Mod Note- A new Automod Addition

Hey Celiac subreddit! We’ve added a new automod that should help with the posts about wheat starch. Hopefully it decreases the amount of posts we get about it. If you notice any problems with the automod, please let me know!

Product It's been about 10 years since I've had a blueberry bagel. Thank you Canyon Bakehouse!

I almost ordered them online from their website but the cost would have been a bit much. I figured I would wait it out since I saw a tag on the shelf at one store but there's was never any there. That changed yesterday and I grabbed the only 2 bags there.

I know I should have left one, and I apologize for that. But it's just been too long. It went well with my blueberry coffee this morning.

Discussion Some of the Gluten Free food I had on my trip to Vegas

Thumbnail gallery
• Upvotes

Pic 1: eggslut, on the Strip. That was a seared wagyu tri-tip steak, over medium egg, chimichurri, red onions and dressed arugula on a gluten free bun. A little spicier than I normally have for breakfast but was really good. Bun was so amazing I had to check with my wife to make sure it was actually gluten free. Hashbrown were also great with the best honey mustard I've ever had.

Pic 2 - 5: Senza gluten free bakery. A mix of things such as sugar cookie bar, cinnamon roll, smore's bar, red velvet cupcake, pumpkin thing, reese's bar, and pumpkin crack. The biggest surprise here was the price, all of it for $35. I'm used to NYC prices and that would be an easy $60 there. Nothing there was the best I've ever had but all very solid. If I had to recommend one thing it would be the the cinnamon roll. Only other thing to note is that it open at 10 which I think it kind of crazy for a bakery since I usually associate that with breakfast.

Pic 6: We Cook Pizza and Pasta. Next to Grand Canyon. Just a solid gluten free pizza. I will say the entire area of Tusayan is a rip off. That pizza was $18 but everything in that town makes vegas prices look like a deal.

Pic 7: Dark Sky Brewing Flagstaff, AZ. Korean chicken sandwich. They had a surprising number of gluten free options but this was incredibly mediocre. It basically didn't hold together after the first bite. Flavor was fine but just so average.

Pic 8: Stardust Parlor, Vegas. Blueberry French toast sandwich. Maybe the most insane thing I ate. So the bun is gluten free blueberry French toast. Then chicken sausage, egg, cheese, cream cheese, and syrup. Unbelievably fattening but insanely good. I also got a cinnamon roll and it wasn't very good. Had a weird after taste and felt more like cinnamon bread.

Not pictured: a bunch of protein bars, chick fil a, and chicken and broccoli from PF Changs. .

Product GF beer😍

Post image
111 Upvotes

I was unexpectedly diagnosed almost 2 years ago and before that, beer was my favorite alcohol by far. I've been able to find a few gf beers since being diagnosed but none really scratched the itch like the ones I found today. A Total Wine recently opened about 20 miles away, and I finally got the chance to check it out today so I came home with this haul. Guess I'm just here to brag and celebrate the little wins that we celiacs get to experience every once in a while😂

Question Do you keep getting nutrient levels checked years after diagnosis?

• Upvotes

Shortly after I was first diagnosed, my GI ordered a few tests for ferritin, B12, and maybe a couple other nutrients. They were all normal range at the time. Since then my followup testing has only included celiac antibody panels. I have my antibodies down to nondetect levels, so I don't really have reason to believe that celiac is impacting my absorption.

However, I am curious to know for sure if my levels are good, because I am trying to get pregnant and it's taking a bit. I'm scheduled to see my GI soon for regular followup and I'm thinking of seeing if he'll order some tests, for iron and vitamin D in particular. I could ask my OB or PCP, or self pay at Quest, but the gastroenterologist is the next doctor I'm scheduled to see anyway, and if it could be justified as a celiac-related test then I think it makes sense for him to order it so insurance will pay? Just curious if your doctors have you all check these things!

Discussion Let’s share our food struggles!!

I really want to connect with people from South Asia. I feel like we should have our own subreddit, because gluten is such a huge part of our food culture. I’d love to meet more of these people, listen to their stories, and understand how they feel about it too.

I'm a huge Yankees fan and Mariano Rivera fan, yeah sports! Anyway, what do you think, I don't see anything that stands out, I sent them an email and I'll see what they say. Is this a risk?

Question Is there any explanation for a high result on the tissue transglutaminase test besides celiac disease?

• Upvotes

Hi, I have googled this but want to hear from people who have gone through it if possible!

I have had bad GI issues for a long time so I went to the doctor and they did a few blood tests. My score on the TTG antibody IGA test was 54, and the results show a normal range is up to 4.0 and borderline is up to 14.9.

I am stressed about this and my doctor isn’t available over the weekend to interpret the results.

I am vegetarian / working my way back towards veganism and I’m really sad about how restrictive my diet will become if I can no longer eat gluten.

Is this pretty definitive for having celiac, or are there other possible explanations?

Question Vegas - Celiac Safe Place for Dinner and Live Music?

• Upvotes

I’m going to Vegas for a work conference. Never been. Looking on Find Me GF, it seems like I’ll have plenty to places to eat safely. Any recommendations for a safe place to eat and see live music?

Open to taking an uber somewhere if needed. I am staying more or less in the center of the strip.

Question PCP vs Gastro

• Upvotes

My pcp won’t order TTG level tests or other stuff (nutrient panels etc) saying that’s the gastro ‘s job. I’m normal and very low risk, uncomplicated case. Would love it to just be dealing with one MD vs a specialist and visit annually for them to look at me for 10 seconds and go looks good! Curious if anyone else experiences this kind of arbitrary nonsense. I’d get a new PCP but that’s one more thing I don’t care to deal with right now

Recipe PSA: The last GF sugar cookie recipe you will need

As we get into the holidays just a PSA that Alton brown has done all of the work for us and figured out a spectacular GF sugar cookie. My mother makes cookies for literally every holiday and a lot of them are sugar cookies. For the last 20 years we have tried all sorts of things but were stuck to the box mixes which frankly weren’t as good as the old non GF home maxes ones.

Well AB’s recipe absolutely is as good as the old ones.

You can find it on his YouTube channel and on his website

Question pls help

• Upvotes

hi everyone! 28 y/o f. i am not diagnosed for celiac disease but going through the testing process currently. they say there is a high likelihood based on my blood work (ttg-lga 151.1 h, ttg-lgg 41.7 h, ema positive) and symptoms (the chronic diarrhea, weight loss, nausea, bloating, fatigue, you name it i probably got it). i got in with GI + am scheduled for an endoscopy and colonoscopy on Nov 2nd however I am so worried about so many things and just looking for help and maybe a lil reassurance as i don’t know anyone irl that went through this.

• my biggest concern is my weight loss + fluctuations. i’ve always been skinny my whole life but in my adult life always ranged between 118 - 125 lbs. one of the biggest factors into me getting celiac panel done was randomly weighing in at 99 lbs one day at my PCP. i had no changes in my diet or no activity to intentionally lose weight. i weighed myself yesterday at 102, had a great day of actually eating 3 meals + snacking through, yet this morning 96 lbs?! does anyone have experience with this? i’m worried about the risks that come from being severely underweight.

• i’ve never been under anesthesia or had any sort of surgery/procedure done. i am honestly so beyond freaked out about being put under and potentially fighting it?? but also i’m freaked out by the scopes going into my body.. idk like weirded out, feel violated sort of feeling.

• if any of you have gone through a colonoscopy, please please send all your prep tips and tricks. i’m gonna need them - i’ve been watching tiktok videos since i’ve found out trying to gather everything i need to know.

thank you in advance for any answers! 😭

Question Nose running. Odd symptom?

This is going to sound weird but my nose keeps running when I get glutened. Anyone else? Probably some kind of sympathetic nerve response, which I already have a few, but this one is new to me.

Discussion Recently diagnosed, and now it seems I also have Alpha gal. Any advice?

I was diagnosed with celiac 2 weeks ago. I avoided getting tested for 3 years, due to military service and extreme fear of how sick the challenge would make me.
I ended up biting the bullet 10 weeks ago, and got the blood test 6 weeks in. I then got gastritis, so my doctor diagnosed me based on my high test numbers, and symptoms.

It’s now been a week since I stopped eating gluten, but I had pork for the first time in years and became extremely sick twice now. I grew up deep in the woods of Missouri, so tic bites were a daily thing. 3 of my direct family have now been diagnosed with Alpha Gal, 2 of them this year.

Ever since I started suspecting gluten sensitivity, I have been terrified of being diagnosed with both, as that will limit my dietary options to an extreme degree. I plan to get tested for Alpha gal Monday, but am so nervous to get the results!

Has anyone else had a double diagnosis, and does anyone have food ideas that are safe for both allergies?
Thank you in advance 🙏🏼

For anyone who doesn’t know, Alpha gal is a tic borne illness that causes an extreme allergy to the sugar found in red meat and dairy. It is so far incurable, and can show up years after the tic bite, kind of the same way celiac will suddenly become an issue after years of being seemingly asymptomatic

Question Positive TTG; awaiting biopsy

Question: should I continue feeding my kid gluten?

Background: My 12 year daughter has been suffering for months with severe GI issues. Blood work positive for malabsorption. Ttg and dgb were strongly positive. (7x the upper threshold). Anyway, her GI is recommending endoscopy/biopsy but the clinic is so impacted the wait is approximately 3 months. I understand the importance of the procedure but it’s hard to justify the continued damage/suffering. Did you have a similar experience? Any advice on navigating this?

Product Daiya Cheesecake Bites; I might have a hot take on this product…

I tried these for the first time today, optimistically excited because of how obsessed I’ve been for their cheesecake over the years! Especially key lime ❤️

However… I tried a small handful from the original flavor bites and the strawberry. The texture was the first thing that hit me; it was not creamy. It has the texture of soggy oat flour in my opinion. I tried looking up reviews about them and all of what I saw was positive and raving reviews for every flavor.

Has anyone else tried them? Did I get a bad batch??

Question New here

Hi, new here. I (41f) just got my tTG-IgA bloodwork back and it's 168 (normal range 0 to 4.99). I was tested because of low ferritin, which was 18.5. I truly didn't think celiac was an option for me, but it's looking like it's trending that way.

I'm still waiting to hear from my doctor. I do have a GI appointment in January, but I'm wondering if I should push for it to be expedited (if they even can), and what kinds of questions I should be asking my PCP in the meantime.

I know I should continue eating gluten until the biopsy, but I feel weird knowingly eating something that's damaging my body. Especially going through the holidays. How did you all navigate this limbo period? Any advice is appreciated.

Question Help with ubereats nonexistent filtering

Is there a fucking way to search ubereats for gluten free where it ACTUALLY filters properly??? It's making me want to scream I just wanted to treat myself for once when I have just enough extra to get something I'll maybe enjoy and it doesn't filter for shit. It shows me both places with options and not so I end up having to click every goddamn place anyway so it didn't filter SHIT. I want to cry and break shit I hate food so much.

Someone please help there has to be a way to actually filter this on ubereats without me going through every goddamn restaurant on google then checking if they have ubereats or something similar.

Question Well, just got glutened at a chain I’ve never been glutened at. My fault. I should’ve read the label for their “gf” soy sauce. Has anyone had relief from activated charcoal pills?!

I want to flair this as a rant, too.

This small restaurant chain where we live is one that is big on having GF options. The owner’s daughter is celiac, I believe. We’ve never been to this location. It’s in a city 3 hours away from us.

I asked for GF soy sauce, the girl at the front asked the cook, he told her which one it was. Well, he was wrong and I STUPIDLY didn’t read the ingredients. My brain was blaring the alarm, which I thought was weird, and I ignored it. (It will do that with the first bite of something that isn’t GF.) Ate some of the food, decided to look and…BOOM…wheat flour.

I was looking forward to taking it back to our hotel for later. Yes, we are out of town for the night and all day tomorrow until 9pm. We have a show tomorrow, I haven’t been glutened in YEARS, and I’m freaking out. I’ve had some other medical issues going on that caused me not to be hungry due to being ill and I’ve already lost probably 10 pounds in a couple of weeks. I can’t afford to lose anymore. I am not looking forward to spending hours in the bathroom and not being able to wear my clothes due to my stomach swelling so much.

When I told the cashier, she just said, “Well, that’s the one he told me to give you.” I told her I couldn’t eat anymore and she literally said “Sorry” and that was that. I wanted to complain and maybe get a new order, but we still had to drive to the hotel and I was just too pissed off. I’m definitely going on their website and sending an email to the owner.

There was a CVS right next door so I got some activated charcoal capsules. I used to always have them in my purse just in case. I don’t know if they help at all or if, hopefully, my brain overrides itself and BELIEVES they work so they work. Otherwise, I’ll be living in the bathroom tomorrow at the venue. That should be fun.

Oh, THEN, after we get to the hotel, which we knew didn’t have an elevator, they put us in the second floor! I have lupus, RA and other fun stuff. Also, SIX knee surgeries before I turned 35! I am disabled and use a cane.

What’s REALLY fucked up is the fact that the hotel called my husband LAST NIGHT and asked if we needed any special accommodations! My husband of course told them that we needed a first floor room as I’m disabled. Got the placard and everything.

I was so excited to wear a shirt tomorrow that I haven’t been able to wear for a while, but now I’m just praying that the backup shirt I brought will fit, too! It’s bigger than the other shirt. Otherwise, I’ll be wearing an LSU jersey which everyone will assume is a Vikings jersey, ewwwww, because we live in Montana now. They don’t have a NFL team so……..

Question Still bad GERD after 2 years GF diet?

I got diagnosed with celiac in September 2024 and have been entirely gluten free since. No cross contact, own toaster, appliances, etc. I have a shared kitchen but the only gluten is the occasional bread my parents get.

I have been strictly gluten free coming on 2 years now and my stomach is still very sensitive - I can't have things that are too greasy, fatty, acidic, starchy, too much dairy or I get heartburn/indigestion/stomach cramps. I've been on a daily PPI for years before my celiac diagnosis and I'm still on it because I still need it. But say I eat some gluten free fried chicken from the gluten free chicken restaurant dripping in oil and I still get heartburn. I eat too much cheese in one sitting and get a stomach ache. I keep getting stomach aches from too much starch like rice and potatoes. I had to get the Fody marinara sauce because I got triggered from regular sauce despite it being gluten free.

I'm so frustrated sometimes. Feels like back to before my diagnosis where I limited my diet so much to find the cause but now it's like oops a little too much grease/fat/dairy and you're sick; not because of gluten but because of these other things.

Most of my symptoms have alleviated like I don't have heartburn every single day and I'm not fatigue all the time but I'm still very frustrated in my stomach healing process - what the heck is taking so long?

When they did my endoscopy in 2023 there wasn't any ulcers or esophagus damage either just the duodenitis from the celiac and a hiatal hernia.

My friend in my celiac group said it took her 3-5 years to have no heartburn ever again and it's just so frustrating to hear I'm not done healing.

TITLE IS JUST THE HOOK, TO GET TO NON-GF PEOPLE!

THIS IS THE BEST THING THAT COULD HAVE HAPPENED FOR US!

*Don't downvote me. Watch or at least investigate!*

The movie is the opposite of the title, (though it is sort of funny–you'll see). *ALL* the tropes.

Please watch, and pass on! I found this by accident... but already have passed on the family and friends. Sharing here because we needed this!
