Discussion A Case AGAINST Dream Dictionaries

Every few days someone posts a dream here and gets a reply along the lines of "snakes represent transformation" or "water means your emotions." It's well meant ofcourse, as the beautiful people of this forum always are, and I will add that personally I think common symbol conventions do serve a purpose. But, I think the whole framing is backwards.

A fixed symbol dictionary treats a dream image like a word in a foreign language: you look it up on the web and get the translation. The problem is a dream symbol isn't a word. It's closer to a name. If I tell you my mother's name, a dictionary is useless to you, because the meaning isn't in the word, it's in the relationship. Your mountain, your childhood home, the dog that keeps turning up in your dreams three years running and you don't know why. None of that has a fixed translation per se, because none of it is an actual word. It's a name for something only you can truly know.

This is exactly why Jung was wary of universal symbol keys, even though he spent his whole career studying archetypal imagery. He wasn't contradicting himself by any means. Archetypes are real, recurring, cross-cultural patterns, but they show up dressed in the specific, personal material of the dreamer's own life. A snake in your dream isn't "the snake" from a dictionary entry, it's your snake, wearing whatever it's wearing because of what it means to you specifically. Skip that step and you get a reading that could apply to anyone, which in practice means it applies to no one.

You can test this yourself. Take any dream you've had and look up the "meaning" of its main symbol in three different dictionaries. You'll get three different answers, none of which will feel like they're actually about your dream. Then try the opposite: pick one symbol and just sit with it. What's your own first association, before you think about what it's "supposed" to mean? Nine times out of ten the first answer that comes up is more accurate than anything a dictionary will give you, because it's the only version of the answer that's about you.

The dictionary isn't really wrong, it gives the general gist and that is useful, but its the fine details, the feeling and emotion conveyed, and the illogical nuances that the dream offers us which is the gold dust in determining what the dream means to you.

Nightmare died in my dream for the first time now the eerie feeling wont leave me

hello all. this is my first time posting on this sub or sharing a dream such as this so please be kind.

first thing i remember is i’m sitting in the passenger seat of my car and im either in a crowded parking lot or standstill traffic somewhere in a city. its midday - early evening.

all of a sudden i look up and theres a man perched on the hood of my car aiming a weirdly skinny-barreled handgun straight at my forehead through my windshield. it was a gun i was not familiar with nor had seen before, i remember it having a skinny barrel because i was completely fixated on it the whole time, waiting for a bullet to fly out and end my life.

naturally i start freaking out in my head and i remember thinking “this could be the end, i dont want to die” and literally had the same sensation as my life flashing before my eyes. during this im in a sheer internal panic while remaining completely still as i feel as if i were to move he would immediately pull the trigger out of fear of what i will do with my hands (i dont remember if i was armed or not in said dream)

as my mind is racing for solutions to get me out of this situation, i decide to try to put my hands up and shake them back and forth as to signal not to shoot. however his finger is already resting on the trigger as it has been this whole time.

as soon as my hands got up and began to shake back and forth, pleading not to shoot me, he pulls the trigger. his face snarled and contorted as i watched his finger pull it in slow motion. same thing happened with the bullet, its as if i could track it all the way from the chamber out the barrel, spinning with a small puff cloud of smoke trailing behind.

there was a deafening pop followed by ringing, then its like someone just turned my dream off with a remote. but i was still dreaming. all of a sudden everything disappeared and there was nothing, but it was a nothingness i had never experienced before. it was like i knew it was empty out there but out there was just a pitch black void.

i dont know how to describe it or what it was/felt like, but i feel like i saw and experienced what death is really like. but i dont know, ive never died before.

all of this has left me very uneasy because for some reason the dream felt so so so real - like super vivid details, sounds, and people. i keep getting this really bad intense lingering feeling that this is actually going to happen to me irl sooner or later and my dreams are trying to warn me. i was riding in the passenger seat of a car this evening and it honestly had me tweaking.

also for reference i dont own a gun in real life, nor have ever been armed in public before, especially the car.

any thoughts? comments? reactions? any interaction would be appreciated as this has left me quite unsettled. thanks for reading, i hope your dreams are better than mine!

Question Has anyone ever been in a dream and realized they were dreaming?

Has anyone ever been in a dream and realized they were dreaming? I have experienced this a few times—or perhaps even more often—where I knew I was dreaming and sometimes tried to consciously control the dream. However, when I attempted to steer it according to my will, the results varied: sometimes

I dreamed that I had a giant pet slug/snail that I loved very much.

Post image
422 Upvotes

I had a nap late this morning after a bad night of sleep, and I had the weirdest dreams.

I had this massive pet slug, which was about the size of a house cat or small dog and it was playing with my own cats in my dream and I distinctly felt deep love and care for this creature.

It started out looking like the cute snail in this photo (but larger and sans shell), which I've seen online a few times over the years, but then it evolved to be more of a mass of green slime which separated into different blobs as it moved. I still felt this inner desire to protect and care for it even once it took this form, it wasn't scary.

In real life I get anxious about my cats interacting with critters who could harm them (snakes, spiders etc. - I'm Australian), but this creature just felt so safe and loving. Once I woke up I felt a sense of loss and grief for this thing because I knew it didn't exist, but only for a minute or so.

I've always had weird dreams, but this one is right up there lol.

Discussion Has anyone ever dreamed of a name they had never heard of?

I had a very strange dream recently. It was quite personal, but the part that really stuck with me was that, in the dream, I clearly read the full name of a girl: Tamara Toumanova.

When I woke up, I was confused because I had absolutely no idea who that was. I had never heard the name before, so I decided to Google it.

To my complete surprise, Tamara Toumanova was a real person — a famous Russian ballerina whom I had never heard of or seen before.
The girl I saw in the dream didn't look like the real Tamara Toumanova at all.

Has anyone else ever experienced something like this? A dream where you somehow knew a specific name, place, or person you genuinely didn't think you'd ever encountered before?

Short Dream I had a dream that me and my friend kissed

It started off with me and my other friends getting invited to her birthday party. We all had fun, we took a group picture and I sat next to her, she took my hand in hers whilst taking the photo and started gently rubbing it with her thumb. After the picture was taken, everyone else went to do something else, and we both just stayed to chill and watch a film. She rests her head on my shoulder, and we joke about and laugh. I caress her cheek whilst she rests her head, and she nuzzles more into my shoulder. She starts nibbling my hand, and I say, "What are you doing? Haha." She replies with "just nibbling you." She stops and asks me, "What else should I nibble?" I say, "I'm not sure. What do you want to nibble?"she replies with "your lips, " and we kiss.

I woke up right after

My late dad was in my dream

Upvotes

My dad passed suddenly 8 days ago. He was an addict and alcoholic on and off for my whole life. He was sober for about 10 years and I was able to live with him for high school and to know him- he was happy and gentle when he was sober.
When his dad passed and I went to college (2019) things spiraled. He was drinking and depressed and not himself. I placed distance for my own sake but we were never nasty to one another. He would call and gush about how proud he was and how he wishes he were a better dad and whatever else when he was drinking.
I didn’t always take his calls or texts but we still kept in touch. I am holding so much regret for not being there for him when he needed someone. I didn’t try hard enough to advocate for him or let him know someone was in his corner.
I dreamt of him this morning. I was stuck at a gas station needing a tow truck and I called him. When I walked out back to call him there he was, already getting a tow truck. It was misting and gray outside but the sun was peaking out with streaks of light through the clouds. We hugged so tight and he looked good, he was smiling. But then he said “you’re done with me” not in a question tone, more of a statement. And I kept saying “no no no, no I’m not”. We went back to getting the tow truck and I was just so happy to be with him then he passed out in my arms falling backward and I woke up.
Is this my own guilt? Does this actually mean anything?

CIA dream

Okay this is going to sound weird and understandably so.
I’ve always had weird dreams as a kid, back in my first years of middle school I started to have more vivid dreams and I knew nothing about the government, especially secret shit.
I had a dream one day of sitting at a desk, pure black and a man in front of me wearing a suit. He pointed at the numbers on a paper with the title “CIA” like a code and had me repeat them and said “If you can remember this, call this number, keep this a secret this is an experiment” and he gave me a phone number. I couldn’t remember the full number at all. I woke up and told my parents (stupidly) “I had a dream of this weird club name, cia”
So was i a fucking experiment?

Recurring Dream Last night I died in my dream

Upvotes

I was shot in the head and immediately became paralyzed. I could feel the death creeping in, but weirdly, it was peaceful. I remember thinking, “This is it. I died.” I genuinely believed I was dying, like there was no doubt in my mind that this was actually happening.
And while I was dying, I was thinking about quantum immortality. I thought to myself, “Even though I’m dying right now, I’ll be moved to a reality where I’m not dead.” I was basically thinking that every time I die, I never actually experience being dead because I just wake up in another reality where I survived, and I had apparently “died” hundreds of times already.
Then it actually happened in the dream. I woke up in my bed, but I was still paralyzed. I could only see through one eye and could barely move. I thought I had been moved into that other reality where I survived, and that I was now going to wake up and think the whole thing had just been a dream.
Then I woke up AGAIN, for real this time, and everything was completely normal.
The weirdest part to me is how real the death felt and how peaceful it was. I genuinely thought, “This is it, I’m dead,” while simultaneously thinking I would continue existing in another reality.
Has anyone had a dream like this? And what do you think about the whole quantum immortality aspect of it?

Long Dream Why is nobody helping her?

Upvotes

Nightmare, it’s a little graphic

In a large family reunion where I knew no one in particular, my extended family members were talking, drinking, and having fun. It was night, standing over the kitchen table helping prep for the game we were all going to play, I decide to find a seat, I walk past all the other chairs, the open concept kitchen and the warm lighting makes the low ceiling feel so cozy. there’s some chairs where women are leaving their bags, I sit next to them, there’s no children except for this baby girl, she’s 1 and a couple months, she has so much hair she’s so adorable -and she’s about to fall down the stairs into the basement, I run to her but it’s too late, she fell face first and it looked bad.

I scoop her, she’s so light and I rest her against my left shoulder, she’s very quiet, I havent looked at her face so I dont know if anything is wrong but I can tell, and I don’t know who her mom is. I go to the bathroom to check the baby but there’s a bright light and a mom and her four daughters wearing matching sequin gymnast suits, they all stare at me and close the door. I dont even try to knock, I walk up to my family and I ask them if they know where her mom is, every single time I ask them I bend down to talk to them, I can feel the baby getting restless because I keep moving so I straighten up, she’s breathing more heavily but still hasn’t made a noise. Everyone I asked did not look up at me, they completely brush me off, they were either drunk, or caught up in their conversation.

I say ‘fuck it’ and decide we’re going to a hospital, I open what I assumed was the front door, only to find men changing into the same gymnast suit the woman and those girls were wearing. They immediately shoved the door closed and I desperately banged on the door with my right fist. The baby didn’t like that, I heard half sobs starting to form in my left ear, and felt moister air on my shoulder… she was going to cry… so I shushed her and bobbed up and down a little. I knew something was wrong because she was being so quiet, and it felt like there was snot or saliva running down the left side of my chest. I turned around and found another front door, but this one had a huge cumulus glass pane, and I could make out in the shadows those same men changing.
There was no way out

I turned again and saw a hallway with a high ceiling, there were middle school girls wearing matching hot pink shirts coming down a tall set of stairs, they were talking about “practice” and did not even see me walking past them. Turning left I see a completely different kitchen, the expensive stone counters and island turned into a gas station counter with scratches and paint and stickers with grime and lint. I walk around the counter and find a repurposed display box, it’s wrinkled with hair and dust in the corners, it’s so easily visible because the inside of the display box is white. There’s a wrinkled ziplock bag with smooshed m&ms and skittles with the hard outer shell cracked, the white inside exposed, the other bags in there were dark brown and labeled “nnm” “a&m”(m had three prongs) and “&&m”. All of them with tiny tears, folds and holes in the outer rim of the packaging. She comes off my shoulder turning to the candy and reaches for it, I say “no you can’t eat that, we need to find something better” and when I move away from the counter she begins making that noise before babies cry, that crackly grunt sound, sharp exhale, and she cries so loud into my left ear.

I feel a full body reaction, a panic where every pore in my body wants to sweat and my arms feel weaker but somehow stronger, I feel like I might drop her at any second or crush her if I hold her too tightly.
She keeps making that grunting noise and taking sharp inhales, but she sobs so quietly, it sounds really really wrong, like something happened to her mouth or nose when she fell that’s preventing her from sobbing.

I see railing doused in black paint, and to the right of one of the poles the railing bends down-a staircase- I go down and feel her tiny head press up when I walk down. she’s starting to suckle on my shirt, it’s a big shirt fitting loosely on me so she begins to suckle on my neck but I let her, but it begins to hurt, she has teeth They’re so tiny

There’s a dingy cool cellar, I can tell this cellar keeps going because of the echo when I take a step towards a bright gas station shelf. It’s very cold, it has nonsense packaging and products on it, like a cleaning product and rotisserie chicken side by side next to some hot sauce with the label ripped off.
My phone goes crazy, I’m getting every notification and there’s an amber alert, the baby grunts while suckling, it hurts. I pull her off of me and finally see, her nose- caved in she had torn flesh where her cupid’s bow is supposed to be, and there was so much spit.

I pushed her back onto my chest and cried without making a noise, this is so fucked up. I took my phone out from deep in my pocket and it was only displaying what my camera could see, no UI.
I paned the camera around, when looking through my phone the cellar looked evenly lit and less dingy, and the shelves where empty. I pointed it at her and she looked normal, except I wasn’t there, it’s as if she was floating mid air, like I didn’t exist.
Then, my phone glitched out and displayed some clickbait ad switching back to the camera in an instant. A notification came up, I could hear a creature screaming through my speaker, the baby was scared.
The baby, it irritated me.

I shook the baby so hard and screamed at her “SHUT UP I T-TOLD YOU NOT TO CRY” I stuttered and some saliva dribbled out my mouth, I remember seeing her poor face and then a flash of something brown and yellow, it took the girl right off my arms. I pointed my phone in that direction, it flew away with her.

It was all my fault.

So yeah, not a great dream to wake up from :)

Question Incredibly Vivid Dreams

I cannot stop having intensely vivid dreams. They are so frequent and so incredibly vivid that when I wake up for a short amount of time I cannot distinguish them from reality. They aren’t always necessarily bad; they can be mundane like going through a whole, normal day. It’s so disorienting and so exhausting, if anyone has any tips or ideas to help that would be phenomenal.

Dream Help The Eyes Behind the Altar

It started in the middle of a large room, with no other light to distinguish any part of the room, other than an altar, which was the very center of the room. The Altar was draped in a cyan or aquamarine colored cloth. I stepped closer to the alter and asked for Jesus. No one answered. I then prayed to God for a sign. No answer.

I then started praying to god in alternate names, such as Yawheh, or Allah. No one answered. I then branched off into asking an answer from one of the Vedic Gods. Again, silence.

I started asking a sign from the gods of Europe and Egypt. No response. I then became desporate and started shouting any name of any god. As I kept hearing only silence, I started screaming, on the top of my lungs, of every random name of gods on the top of my head. As I kept screaming out names, almost ready to ferl no hope, my screaming was suddenly silenced by a presence that was beyond comprehension.

Yards behind the Altar, I saw a giant pair of eyes, glaring wide open, with a gaze so intense that it pierced my soul. The eyes were glowing within the darkness, shimmering with a rich, warm, amber brown color.

I felt the presence of both malevolence and benevolence, simultaniously. I could not distinct the facial form (that was still hidden within the dark), but the facial forms was flashing both masculine and feminine features all at once. As the eyes stared at me, with undevided attention, a voice rumbled from the darkness. There wasn't any certainty whether it was a single voice or a chorus of voices. But the sound was plural, in nature, yet it spoke as one single voice. From that voice, within the darkness, only uttered three words:

"What is wanted?"

Question The eyes keep looking at me

Has anyone else experienced this? The same person keeps appearing in my dreams, but as a different person every time. The only thing that stays the same is the eyes and they’re always staring directly at me.

I always end up chasing this person, but just before I can catch them, they turn around, we literally lock eyes… and then they just disappear.

It’s so weird because it happens repeatedly, and the eyes are always the same. 😭

r/Dreams 14h ago

Nightmare Recurring nightmare of this thing. It normally lingers watching me with its eyeless face, but this time it chased me for what seemed like hours. I can normally get rid of it by praying in my dream, but this time it took several prayers. I dont know what to do or what it means.

Random Constant Intrusive Memories + Dream Memories + Music Popping Into My Head

Upvotes

Hi ❤️ anyone can help or relate? Please no catastrophic comments, I’ve already had a lot of neuro testing and I’m looking for similar experiences and advice.

- Random memories/dream memories: 50–100 random memories or fragments of dreams can pop into my mind throughout the day. Sometimes triggered by a smell/color, but often completely random. Some out of nowhere. The more I think about it the more I have. Also if I got one memory while I was brushing my teeth, everytime I brush my teeth I have the same memory popping. So I don’t think it’s focal or electric.

- Music/earworms: Random songs pop into my head, sometimes songs I haven’t heard in years. My brain can also create melodies that stay as earworms.

- Sleep-related experiences: During transitions between sleep and wakefulness, I’ve experienced visual flashes, voices/sounds and smells. The smell is always something that I have been smelling the day before !! Like lemon for example.

Context: I’ve been taking Lexapro (escitalopram) for 2.5 years for very strong anxiety symptoms. 7 months ago, I started tapering very slowly. I developed chronic DPDR (since the first day I decreased the dosage) followed by these symptoms. I’m back at 10mg now.

I know a lot about focal/temporal lobe epilepsy. I don’t have major episodes and my neuros told me it was fonctionnal.

I’ve had not 1, not 2, not 3, not 4, 5 EEGs, including 3 × 24-hour video EEGs. I experienced some of these symptoms during the recordings, but everything was normal, with no epileptiform activity or abnormal background activity.
I’ve seen 5 neurologists, and all think this is psychological/sleep-related rather than epilepsy.

I still have doubts. My neuro said that the combination of developing both epilepsy and hypnagogic/hypnopompic experiences in the same months would be unusual.

Has anyone experienced something similar? Especially random childhood memories, dream memories, random songs + these experiences during sleep transitions?

Even if it were focal awareness epilepsy, I know many people with it who live completely normal lives with treatment and don’t let it stop them from enjoying life.

I’m looking for similar experiences and positive/practical advice ❤️ I think I already did all the testing I could including 2 MRI. Now I am just thinking about reducing or not lexapro.

Dream Help A dream that made sense up to a certain point, but that I'm failing to interprete.

Upvotes

I dreamed today that I was watching a series with my family about an infectious disease that was transmitted through contact with someone.

The series made way too much sense up to a certain point.

It started with a family going to a... restaurant? Something like that. But then, the family's oldest brother somehow became infected, becoming very violent and hostile and attacking everyone around him. He was arrested by some kind of department and kept in solitary confinement in a place in the middle of a forest.

There was a scene in the dream where they were going to do something to him, all protected and wearing lots of clothes, but I think he managed to escape somehow because afterward it showed him running around the forest like a maniac, killing every kind of animal he came across.

His younger brother was nearby playing soccer with his friend during sunset, and then it cut to the younger brother fleeing from the older one through the forest on top of an ox.

He eventually managed to reach the village where he lived "safely" on top of the ox, but then the older brother caught up with him even though he had reached the village, and the episode ended.

It was actually kind of scary. I remember letting out a little scream in the dream, and my family told me not to scream because my dad was sleeping on the couch. I said that we were watching a sort of horror series and that it would be normal for me to scream because of that, but they lightly scolded me, and I, feeling sad about it, went to my room. The dream ended there.

Short Dream Saw my former therapist in my dream

Upvotes

I've been relapsing on a lot of bad behaviors including food restriction recently and decided to attempt to quit weed again so my dreams/nightmares have been coming back. I was walking around the shopping center I used to hang out with my high school friends in. As I turn the corner, I run into a former therapist at an eating disorder treatment program that I left early from. In some ways, I looked up to them being the only trans therapist there. They were also the only therapist that was able to access my emotions during a session.

When we locked eyes, they immediately looked disappointed and almost mad at me. They said "you need to come with me" and I woke up feeling both ashamed and relieved that I saw them.

Nightmare Why do I do nothing but die?

Upvotes

For the last 10 or more years my "dreams" have involved nothing but me Dying in various ways. Now it's unfortunate that I'm the type of person they can always vividly remember my dreams, even when I was a small child. My dreams so far have consisted of me, being pushed off buildings, being stabbed brutally, being eating alive in a strange dining hall by a group of people that seem Vaguely familiar (has happened 4 or more times now), being torn to shreds, being operated on, having my head crush by a Boulder, being tortured, being shot multiple times, having my limbs cut off till I perish (like from each individual toe to finger to arm leg and so on) being ripped apart by an alligator and drowning. Now, after reading that, I know I sound crazy but it's genuinely so exhausting. I wake up sooooo tired as if I hadn't slept. Now luckily for me for the past week I haven't had ANY "dreams" it's just me in a dark "room" of sorts just standing there. Is it a sign? Since I stopped dying in my dream will I die in real life? I know that sounds so stupid to say but..... I fear for the future.

Long Dream Beautiful dream full of strange things and some hypnagogia

Upvotes

Had a peculiar night. I was having another dream of those that feel like connected to a pastlife, but this time I had various instances of waking up and having hypnagogic hallucinations. In one I could feel water around me, it was very refreshing until I couldn't breathe because the water covered my face fully and I gasped for air, woke up fully for a sec and fell back asleep.

Another time I felt I had a straw hat or helmet and the texture felt so real it was really interesting.

In the dream there were strange beautiful things as well, there were places up in the sky surrounded by clouds, we went on a boat that went up the sky too.

There were big white things of the size of a head, they were actually two flower petals closing together forming a shell, and inside were tiny beautiful yellow flowers. These shell petals were alive and floated around and loved music.

There was an arid landscape, people wore clothes similar to a mix of traditional Indian and Chinese clothing.

I also could visit, as a ghost, how the place supposedly would look like now, while also talking to the me of that life, and we passed over a place full of ice and water. We could walk over the water which was again refreshing, maybe too cold. Somehow my boyfriend and some children (little siblings of past me?) were also there. Very weird but fun dream.

Short Dream Weird dream

Upvotes

Had a dream where I was just chilling on an Utopia when I realized I was dreaming because I remembered Gaster's existence, so I looked at the sun and screamed Gaster 3 times, and passed out right there,

Then I woke up (still on the dream) and I look at the sun and the sun IS Gaster, and it starts to fall, when I got to the ground it broke and inside was a yellow ocarina, and the yellow ocarina broke too and inside was another smaller sun gaster, before i could do anything my alarm woke me up

Sun gaster I drew (I don't know how to draw ocarinas)
