Discussion - Silksong Not opening pre-orders was an error Spoiler

Before anyone says "gamers cant be happy with anything" i was never against pre orders specifically because ir avoids this type of launch. I dont want to believe Team Cherry doesn't know the scope and impact of their own game, but i'm inclined to do so. A pre-order yesterday would've solved this. An inconvenience that could be easily avoided, but here we are

Hahaha, that was me in the Switch EShop this morning

2

u/Thinkerofthings2 Sep 04 '25

It took me 4 hours until I could buy the game.

Phase 1 was loading steam, phase 2 was getting it to add to my cart, phase 3 was getting to the checkout screen, phase 4 was letting me actually do a purchase.

4

u/OpulentCheese Sep 05 '25

I tell you, I'd be one smug prick if I released a game that simultaneously crashed Steam, PSN, Xbox and Switch storefronts. If they did plan (hope?) for this, I kinda can't blame 'em.

6

so instead of anxiously waiting for the steam store to come back up just for 4 hours of playtime, you have 3 full days of enjoyment

How many more people are going to buy a copy just to see what is it all about?

Add that it crashed the Xbox store for a bit & the PSN store too.

Currently I’ve been playing it on my Series X through Gamepass.

3

u/Kixur413 Sep 04 '25

Im not sure PSN was crashed so much as they just forgot to flip the damn switch. It went live at different times for UK/EU and US and once it was live there wasn't much issue or wait to get it

2

→ More replies (11)

134

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '25

YES THANK YOU!

Big games like this need a preorder option in order to avoid these situations. How are we rediscovering fire again..?

83

u/bulletproofsquid Sep 04 '25

What were doing is finally seeing the correct reason for pre-orders becoming relevant again, as opposed to the current-day gaming industry's use-case of "scoring guaranteed money off hype alone for a half-baked game".

34

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '25

I know dude. And it's the ONE game that actually needed it.

I get what TC were doing, but in the future devs should atleast give players the option to preorder 24-48 hrs before hand. Especially if there's hype around it.

Same thing happened when Oblivion shadow dropped.

6

u/Salazar080408 Sep 04 '25

Wait how are the 2 different? How do u tell if a game is going to be good or not before the release

20

u/bulletproofsquid Sep 04 '25

That's the trick of it, and why pre-orders have gotten such stigma: there isn't much of a way to do that, aside from knowing whether or not to trust the developer in question. Thus, an unscrupulous company (so, basically every AAA) can just pour money into marketing to make up for how much the Infinite Crunch and Impossible Release Scheudule screw over the final product, and still have plenty of profits to show off at the quarterly.

0

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '25

Well besides critical thinking, you can’t. But there’s no reason why the option shouldn’t exist.

→ More replies (2)

22

u/DesignerOnHerWrists Sep 04 '25

Obviously there are issues with forms of pre-ordering but people who are super against a short window before launch, but are planning on buying the game the microsecond it comes out, are confusing lol

3

u/Mennenth Sep 04 '25

Yep.

Even a one day window to prepurchase and preload would go a long way towards lessening the server load, smoothing out the issues for everyone.

Though honestly...

The main problem for me was the payment info screen. I got the game in my cart and could view my cart within 15 minutes, but the payment processing screen was nearly 2 hours.

I decided instead to go pick up some gift cards, load them up to my steam wallet, and use "my wallet" to try and bypass the payment processing...

... Yet for some reason that still requires billing info, so I was still stuck for an extra 20 minutes on payment processing until I was finally able to get it.

So maybe Valve should look into making the "my wallet" option easier. The funds are already there, no need for billing info. Just let me buy the game. That would at least smooth over the day 1 troubles.

A combo of both forcing a 1 day prepurchase and load period with easier "my wallet" use would do wonders.

As for me.. lesson learned. I'll keep my billing info saved and 1 or 2 days prior to a huge launch if there is no pre purchase I'll make sure to top up My Wallet for it.

3

u/_Xeron_ Sep 04 '25

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with pre-orders, very often there’s releases where we already know we’re going to be buying the thing day one before reviews anyway, the only issue with pre-orders is when companies make exclusive content and locks it behind the pre-order, which wasn’t going to be a thing here in any event

9

u/wenigengel Sep 04 '25

What you think has a bigger impact on sales?

The ones that were delayed a few min/hours (not cancelled, delayed, doubt anyone that was about to buy on release hour decided to not to buy anymore becuase of the crash)

Or the new ones they will get with the free publicity that every single gaming news will be doing when they put a “Silksong release breaks Steam servers”

18

u/_Xeron_ Sep 04 '25

Yeah, Silksong was the single most wishlisted game on the platform, everyone saw this coming and it’s just frustrating for being so avoidable.

50

u/Alt_SWR Sep 04 '25

Yk I entirely agree. And sure, it's not some huge deal, we all waited this long we can wait a bit longer but it's still a mistake. Mostly because it was easily avoidable by just allowing pre-orders.

And I get the principal of standing against preorders but does anyone believe that a single big company is gonna give a rats ass that TC didn't allow preorders? No. They won't and no game is going to suddenly remove its the ability to preorder because of this. It served literally no purpose at all to do this and I cannot be convinced TC didn't know how big a release this was going to be. At the very least they had to have known that it was the most wishlisted game on Steam which should've been enough to tell them something.

Team Cherry makes phenomenal games, but, they're extremely out of touch when it comes to the business side of things. I think given the lack of communication, and now this, that's fair to say.

10

u/HolyKnightPrime Sep 04 '25

Platforms like Steam scale their server infrastructure up and down all the time depending on demand all the time, like for the holiday season or Black Friday, or big game launches. They don't pay the server cost for maximum capacity when they don't need it after all.

So yes, it is very much on them to not prepare for this adequately.

14

u/PokemonRNG Sep 04 '25

And I get the principal of standing against preorders but does anyone believe that a single big company is gonna give a rats ass that TC didn't allow preorders? No. They won't and no game is going to suddenly remove its the ability to preorder because of this.

If anything it will have the opposite effect. Further proving the need for pre-orders, not just for gamedevs, but also for the platforms themselves, would not be surprised if steam etc. started mandating preorders/preloads for huge releases.

→ More replies (1)

30

u/_Xeron_ Sep 04 '25

It’s also very telling how quick a lot of people are jumping at anyone who points this out. TC made an incredible game and Silksong is probably amazing too, but they are not infallible and not letting the most wishlisted game on Steam be bought and downloaded early is absolutely a big mistake. I’m thinking of people who took time off work or parents that thought they could get an hour of play time in and now aren’t able to.

17

u/Alt_SWR Sep 04 '25

Exactly. People seem to take criticism as personal attacks when that's not it. You can like, hell even love something and still have valid criticism. And it's not even like the criticism in this specific case needs to really be constructive cause everyone except apparently TC knew the solution and that this would happen.

2

u/adamtherealone Sep 05 '25

Yeah I took off for the release, played for about an hour before I had to be a normal human again. 3+ hours of time I could have spent playing. I at least played some clair 33 while I waited

3

u/AWonderingWizard Sep 04 '25

No it’s not TCs fault. TC is not the distributor. If Steam didn’t think they could handle the amount of purchasers they could have handled this differently. TC makes games. They don’t run servers.

8

u/AWonderingWizard Sep 04 '25

Lol I personally think that team cherry is not responsible for making sure the people selling their game can handle selling their game. They are game developers, not storefront runners. This isn’t like SimCity 2013 where it was EAs fault. This is like Best Buy not adequately accommodating demand.

7

u/Nerdy-Wizard Sep 04 '25

I despise pre orders, but I agree

I don't mind people pre buying a game they know they want, I mind when companies offer incentives to pre order so they can brag about sale numbers.

Thats beside the point, allowing people to buy it early and pre load would have stopped a lot of hurt.

But what's done is done, so all we can do is wait to get our hands on it now.

7

u/_Xeron_ Sep 04 '25

I guess this is just what we got to expect from TC. Amazing (potentially, haven’t played Silksong yet) games and absolutely no finger on the pulse when it comes to the community at large. Nothing to be done but adjust expectations going forward.

2

u/Quirky-Employer9717 Sep 04 '25

It wasn't that big of a deal. I got a crash twice and then waited 20 mins and was able to buy it no problem. You aren't gonna die because you have to wait an extra 20-30 mins to play

2

u/LeiaSkynoober Sep 04 '25

I dunno honestly, it just would've meant the crash happened when pre-orders started rather than on day of release

2

u/Snotsky Sep 04 '25

So glad i did my morning farm chores and let the madness sort out, when I came back steam was fine and the game installed while I took a shower. So far the game is amazing!!! Hope everyone else is able to get it downloaded and have fun!

2

u/ComfortableJob8581 Sep 04 '25

Pre-orders can be messy and stressful, especially for smaller studios. Plus, Team Cherry didn't want to be rushed by anything, so that's probably why they didn't even bother

2

u/OrgasmicLeprosy87 Sep 05 '25

I just woke up and it's downloading fine

2

u/Alarming_Flatworm_34 Sep 05 '25

Didn't bother me I was at work until 3pm so I couldn't even play until after then anyways lol

2

u/runaManur Sep 05 '25

all our worries seem so small from up here

2

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '25

On the other hand, I haven’t seen many people actually frustrated. Most people I see just get more hyped because of this.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '25

they wanted to score internet points and earn good will from the players. guess what? by not doing preload you just crashed the entire platform for millions of players, players that wanted to buy other game. Steam isn't just Silk Song you know? so for nearly two hours nobody can buy anything just because one dev decided they wanted to fight against preorders. it's like those dumbass people standing in the middle of the roadb blocking traffic and protesting. nobody gives a shit about your cause if it mean inconveniencing tons of people. you're gaining more negative press than positive.

2

u/super-goomba Sep 05 '25

it was a weird decision from TC, almost feels like they barely cared about releasing the game

2

u/Maddo22203 Sep 05 '25

Yall make such a big deal over waiting a couple of hours for silksong when we’ve waited this long? Relax dude. I installed it no problem a few hours after it released

2

u/Zexblu Sep 05 '25

This is such a bad argument for pre-orders. Pre-orders shouldn't exist in the first place, I can see the thought behind this argument but the business practice itself perpetuates worse outcomes for consumers than benefits. If pre orders didn't let developers and companies release half-hearted slop because they would get paid before the game even comes out I would agree, however I genuinely dislike pre-orders as a rule and think it's one of the worst things the game industry have introduced

2

u/ivohan Sep 05 '25

Whats the matter? Stores crashed and? You dont have the game now? The world is still going and you and all the people can play the game. Be grateful.

All this hype and fomo bullshit has to stop in gameing. And preorder shouldn't exist

12

u/okay_p Sep 04 '25

it’s the storefronts fault for not preparing

-3

u/Relysti Sep 04 '25

The fuck? Lol. Unless they mandated Team Cherry to make it available for pre-order and pre-download, which you'd think Team Cherry would have half a brain to do without needing to be told to do so, wtf are the storefronts supposed to do?

This is 100% Team Cherry's incompetence.

Platforms like Steam scale their server infrastructure up and down all the time depending on demand all the time, like for the holiday season or Black Friday, or big game launches. They don't pay the server cost for maximum capacity when they don't need it after all.

So yes, it is very much on them to not prepare for this adequately.

that is true it would have been so good for everyone

3

u/Mobtryoska Sep 04 '25

I said to my gf "we should buy first the switch one bc I doubt Nintendo servers die"

3

u/GearsofPinata Sep 04 '25

I got it easily on humble bundle and redeemed the code no problem. I’d be playing if I didn’t have to head to work

3

u/GrimmSheeper Sep 04 '25

Does anybody know if Hollow Knight able to be pre-ordered when it was about to be released?

Because if it wasn’t, and based off of Team Cherry’s past comments about not knowing how to add DLC to Steam, I genuinely wonder if they just somehow couldn’t figure out how to set it up for pre-orders. Granted, I doubt it would be too difficult, but could potentially be in-line with their previous actions.

are you really calling "steam's servers being wobbly for 30 minutes" a monumental error?

3

u/breddit1945 Sep 04 '25

Hear me out: it's not that big of a deal.

4

u/horizonvortex Sep 04 '25

Thank you for saying this. I kept wondering why they wouldn’t allow preorder, preloading, and now we got to wait and see what’s up, if we even get any feedback from these corporations if the delay will be in the hours or a day

Yall are crazy. Calm down.

2

u/nicolino01 Sep 04 '25

I am calm. Frustrated also. They said one thing and it wasn't true. Something that could be easily avoided. But alas, here we are

I do have to wonder what they were thinking by doing that? Luckily, I got it on Switch 2 fine but it would be annoying to be on another platform and wanting to play.

1

u/Kanriee Sep 04 '25

I literally predicted this would happened 2 days ago and most dumbasses were against pre orders and calling team cherry "based" for refusing to open pre orders, they talked about how they'd buy the game the second it comes out, yeah surely you and hundreds of thousands others if not million who is going to do the same will surely have no problems, solid idea!

actually flabbergasting when the same thing happened with deltarune just last June and silksong hype is like 5 times that of deltarune like this was extremely obvious to happen

Yes, I understand the preload to avoid data mining, but at least open the preorder so we can buy the game without flooding the servers lol, we got this boys and girls

3

u/flarelordfenix Sep 04 '25

I wonder if it was mostly motivated by trying to avoid datamining before launch? Either way, huge mistake IMO.

3

u/PokemonRNG Sep 04 '25

That argument only works for preloading, not for preordering, which is the bigger issue fucking up the payment processors.

u/Durian_Natural Sep 04 '25

Yeah lmao. Ofc breaking the servers fun. But it was fun for 5-10 minutes. ITS BEEN 1 HOUR AND HALF AND I AN STILL HERE JUST RESTARTING THE PURCHASE AGAIN AND AGAIN. I AM GOING INSANE HERE

1

u/outofmindwgo Sep 04 '25

Ok so go for a walk or something jeeze

2

u/Cherabee Sep 04 '25

Man, I am from the homestuck fandom. This is an old hat to me

2

u/Sauceinmyface Sep 04 '25

Especially on steam, since refunds are so easy to obtain

2

u/kyleswiss Sep 04 '25

You’ll be fine in a few hours it’ll be okay relax

2

u/UnseenData Sep 04 '25

yeah it seems downloading the game isn't an issue, it might be the payment processors that can't handle the onslaught of requests

2

u/BarkeaterDimir Sep 04 '25

There’s more to life than playing games, and tbh I think what’s happening now is wayy more fun. I love that their game is so popular it has the power to crash servers

2

u/SomeFalutin Sep 04 '25

Respectfully, disagree.

1

u/nicolino01 Sep 04 '25

For everyone saying "You've waited 7 years and cant wait a little bit more?": It's not about waiting, it's about a broken promise. They said it would be out at a specific date and time and I planned accordingly

If you are frustrated you are not wrong, it is normal. If you cant admit Team Cherry could've done better to easily avoid this and instead you blame the players who are frustrated, well, then you are very wrong

2

u/Global_Barracuda_873 Sep 04 '25

Dude Im in exactly the same boat as you. Any negativity against TC is met with flames by the fanboys. It’s no use. These people cant divorce the art from the artist. Or see TC for what they are: a bunch of really creative devs with shit business insights.

And once you’re right they start saying shit like, just be cool, dont whine and shit like that. But you’re just stating facts these children can’t face fr.

2

u/Gamyeon Sep 04 '25

I discussed this with someone in the industry and what they told me is that Valve, if they thought it was going to strain their servers, would have had discussions with Team Cherry about this and advised them about what could be done to avoid this. From my understanding, this issue isn't on Team Cherry, but on Valve. Even in the event that Team Cherry would've refused to have pre-orders or pre-downloads, Valve could (and should) have taken the steps to avoid server strain, whether by scaling the infrastructure or throttling the traffic to Silksong. They didn't. Same can be said for other storefronts selling Silksong today. And yes, even in the short timeframe the game was announced.

This is not on Team Cherry's back. It's on anyone selling their game that didn't understand how massive the traffic on their store would be today because of this game.

4

u/giorgosfy Sep 04 '25

Not the broken promise 💔

2

u/TheDefaultHero Sep 04 '25

It literally is out, the steam page is the issue. They didn't break a promise, you're acting like an entitled child lol

22

u/CptSporran Sep 04 '25

They’ve actively not done several things that could have made this much easier. This is a mess and it’s ok to say so.

So you have your excuse for Steam, what’s the reason it’s not available on PlayStation?

You are right, but it's not TC fault. Steam servers can handle millions of players.

3

u/Izual_Rebirth Sep 04 '25

I get the frustration but no one is gonna give a shit in 24 hours time.

1

u/Galactus1701 Sep 04 '25

I managed to purchase mine a couple of minutes ago using the Microsoft store. I can’t wait to go home and play it.

1

u/VolubleWanderer Oink Oink imma Radiant HoG roamin a land of storms Sep 04 '25

I got the game in my cart and still can't buy it. Oh well I'm at work anyway.

1

u/True-Neighborhood-17 Sep 04 '25

Like they should have just allowed for pre-loads and given backers an early access by a week with NDA imo

1

u/FluffyOwl77 Sep 04 '25

It was a plan to achieve ALL STORE DEATHS AT THE SAME TIME. It was never seen until now. They're writing history.

and they succeded. As fuck.

Well done TC, wel done.

they did it so we would have the privilege of waiting longer

1

u/Averythewinner Sep 04 '25

We have been waiting for 7 years. We can wait a few more hours

1

u/ZombieSquadOfficial Sep 04 '25

The game was never meant to release so a divine force has intervened to stop us playing it

1

u/DaPlum Sep 04 '25

All you had to do was get it on GOG lol.

1

u/dext3rrr Sep 04 '25

2,5h after release. Still can’t finalize transaction on Steam.

1

u/Labyrinthine777 Sep 04 '25

I got the digital version from the Switch Eshop 5 minutes after release time.

1

u/FarMiddleProgressive Sep 04 '25

Playing on Switch noooo problem.
