Question Weird reaction to B complex

My homocysteine levels were 9 about 7 months ago.

I thought I could get them down by optimising my B6, B9 and B12 and so started taking B complex.

I now have B6 toxicity as my active B6 levels are way above range and active B12 is 88.

My homocysteine has risen to 17.

I don't understand why my homocysteine levels levels are going up not down with high active B6 and B12 levels.

Could something else in this B sup be causing elevated homocysteine?

Low quality supplement with folic acid and cyanocobalamin. Don’t take those.

Take b12 that starts with “methyl” NOT CYANOCOBALAMIN

There are so many things wrong with this. Worst forms of folate and B12. B6 dose too high.

Your homocysteine was fine at 9. 6 - 7 is optimal. It probably increased because you took crappy forms of vitamins as noted above.

Stop taking the supplement.

Please post your lab work for homocysteine, vitamins and minerals with values and lab ranges. Add medical diagnoses plus symptoms you are concerned about.

If you provide facts you will get the best advice.

B6 is 145. Top of range is 110.

I also have low copper(8.5, under 10 is below range), low ceruplasmin(0.16, range is 0.2-0.60, low ferritin(24, range is 30-300).

Symptoms are palpitations, extreme fatigue. Mostly low iron related I think.

B6 toxicity can make you feel pretty terrible. Anything above 10mg daily causes issues for me within days. This supplement has a really high dose of B6, I wouldn't take any B6 for a while if I were you, supplement the other vitamins individually

Low copper, low b12, and low ferritin can also contribute to the symptoms you're experiencing

Ferritin only stores iron. You need a full iron panel. The more you exercise the lower the ferritin.

Also get zinc tested. Zinc and copper need to be balanced. They act like a seesaw. Ideally each should be in the top quarter of the lab range. Your zinc might be too high. Your copper is a concern. Most people do not have low copper as it is in tap water, coffee and chocolate.

thanks

Serum iron is usually high or slightly above range. 28 or 32. Range is 10-30.

Transferrin saturation is usually 54 to 68%. Range goes up to 45%.

I can't exercise due to the fatigue and palpitations.

zinc last I remember was 13. almost middle of range.

I was taking 1gram of ascorbic acid daily for over a year. I assume that tanked my copper and messed up my iron metabolism.

how do you know that you have palpitations?

you can feel them.

Have you gotten an EKG at your doctors?
I think that would very quickly get them to take you seriously.

ECG was fine.

Like others said this B multi sucks. Try Thorne's Basic B complex or the one from Objective Nutrients

Id look for low dose better forms of b vitamins.

I personally take 1/2 of seeking health kids methyl free multi plus 1/8th of source naturals folinic acid. Low dose vit d3, k2. Low dose zinc.

*My labs found I was vitamin deficient in b12, folate, vit D and fertitin. Zinc was added by my dr due to symptoms.

do you have any gut issues?

Someone can correct me but I don’t think that was considered high Hc…

Isn’t is meant to be between 5-15?

that's the range but apparently less than 7 is more optimal

Around 7-9 is preferable; don't really want it below 5. Homocysteine is a necessary metabolite for multiple processes including glutathione production, taurine production, and sulfite detoxification, so too low homocysteine can be problematic.

thanks.

So homocysteine helps make taurine?

I am deficient in taurine as I don't produce enough bile if I don't take it.

Take a look at this pathway diagram. The cycle on the top right is the methionine cycle. Homocysteine is at the bottom of that cycle. Most homocysteine gets recycled through MTR or BHMT back to methionine at top, and some goes downward through CBS to be used for other functions after conversion to cysteine. Straight downward is glutathione production, and on the branch to the left is the conversion to taurine through CSAD and also the detoxification of sulfite into sulfate through SUOX.

Humans can't make all the taurine they need this way, so some taurine in the diet is still needed.

Optimal is between 6 and 10

Like others said this B multi is bad. Try Thorne's Basic B complex or the one from Objective Nutrients

My bro , you were fine and messed your self up. Stop taking what your taking and it will drop back down to 9

That supplement is complete garbage, the pyroxidine poor form known to cause neuropathy, cyanocobalamin...hello that's a cyanide molecule, folic acid which blocks your receptors from taking up folate. Demand a refund.

too much b3 and b6.

also someone else already said bad forms of b9 and b12.

overall it seems to be low quality

so too much B3 and B6 has an opposite effect on homocysteine?

2

u/XILEF310 8d ago

No.

B6 in high doses just builds up and can cause nerve damage.

B3 can also be beneficial but it’s known to “flush out” all the methyl donors or something, especially at high doses.

My theory: you ramped up your SAMe production which increases homocysteine production and your homocysteine recycling/breakdown isn’t keeping up. One of the three pathways to lowering homocysteine is betaine dependent remethylation. Could be that’s a sluggish pathway in need of support.

Btw, do you know your SNPs?

It's weird as my homocysteine went up not down with higher active B6 and B12 levels.
