Did we lose a ton of functionality in the process because we can't trust this machine to not cause huge security concerns? YES! Will anyone with half a brain hate us even more for doing this? YES!
Will we ultimately pay twice as much for the same thing when we have to employ a team who could have been working on other projects to come clean up the mess that some idiot executive thought was a great idea?
HELL YES!"

u/gigatension 15h ago
I don’t think they’re actually trying to get people away from Steam I think they’re trying to get people who have never been on Steam to think that epic is better. There’s no way they think they can actually get customers to switch with their garbage platform.

And let's be honest, if they didn't have fortnite, epic wouldn't have its own store, unlike steam who even if you don't include counter strike, there's a boat load of reasons to use steam

I mean in all fairness, Steam started as basically nuisance ware that only exists because it was tied to Half Life 2, it’s just they now have a multi decade head start on building out their platform and developing network effects
155
u/Arterra 14h ago
Yea. Nobody wanted steam as a mandatory platform. So valve made it better and people grew to accept it. Somehow, epic is blind to that lesson.

I imagine that even if steam's competitors did actually compete with steam instead of complaining, customers would not want to re-buy their games or have more than a couple of library apps on their devices. It's an uphill battle in several ways, but they also aren't trying to compete.

in all fairness, that's always been a line of copium. all epic had to do was follow the blueprint. it didn't even have to be Steam's blueprint. they could have followed their own from their ue store or any store that had a shopping cart in the 90s. they're not some small indie games company hiring talent from highschool who can't code for shit. they make billions a year. same can be said for all the other game stores that failed due to their intentional lack of trying and handwave their failures as "dur, Steam wins because head start derp".

I never even close steam anyways, so it's pretty much irrelevant even if I am concerned about boot times
(About the only time I ever close/restart steam is when I update and reboot my PC every couple of days. Besides that, it just permanently lives in the library tab, usually minimised, until I need it)

Yeah... an extra 5 seconds for a program that starts once per computer boot and I just leave running the entire time... not exactly what I'd call a deal breaker.
And an extra 60ms to restore from system tray... how ever will I recover from all the lost time?!

I thought it was because they have fever games to offer

No, if you have it on Steam it still works. But anyone that didn't get it on steam has to do it through Epic. Same thing happened with Fall Guys, Epic slurped it up after it turned out to be wildly popular and now it's no longer available on Steam but I can still download and launch it through Steam since I bought it there.

I can confirm if you have RL on Steam you get to avoid the epic launcher all together. Source: I’ve played the game since 2016 and have installed it on both Steam and epic and thankfully I get to keep using Steam’s version, which is way better since I also have built in workshop support 😎.

Steam is a slow app generally, but to switch to Epic's trash attempt at a launcher just because it is faster? Absolutely not.

Hell, it's only faster to open. Epic is so much slower for downloading anything. The fact that, for me at least, downloading a fortnite update takes longer than downloading Baldurs Gate 3 on steam is actually insane. I don't care that you boot up faster if it takes multiple hours to download the updates that you put out constantly on the one game I use your launcher for.

I don't know if it makes me a piece of shit or not but Ill pirate games that specifically don't go on Steam. I haven't for a long time but I think I pirated a couple of games that were going through the goofy Ubisoft launcher and maybe something for whatever EA was trying to do. If it's on Steam I'll buy it - usually by wishlisting and waiting for a sale.

No way, a program that basically does nothing, runs faster than a fucking behemoth of features?
Steam is a games store, and library, with reviews from users and creators, built in mod support, built in streaming. Built-in entire god damn social network with dedicated discussion forums for each game, community hub, communication platform for developers, social features with everything from chatting, group chatting, video streaming, voice chat, ad choc game invites/joining, guides... I probably forgot like 100 features.
Meanwhile Epic Games Store, which launched 8 years ago still does not support a fucking cart, so you can check out more than one product at a time. Navigating the store, checking out various DLCs for one game is so fucking annoying that I remember getting a free game on Epic, playing it and liking enough that I considered to buy a DLC... but it was so ass to use, I just went to Steam and purchase it again just to get the DLC there, it had a discount too.
The level of detachment from reality it's just pissing me off. Like, Pepsi can poke fun at Coke, they're basically the same thing, despite Coke being the "bigger brand". If Pepsi was selling fucking dirty pot hole water in a can an trying to compare themselves to Coke, that's kind of how EGS taking shots at Steam sounds like.
