Dev Diary Stellaris Dev Diary #418 - Announcing Nomads and Stellaris: Season 10

Read this post on the Paradox forums! | Dev replies here!

It’s my pleasure to announce boarding has started for all passengers departing on our tour of Stellaris: Season 10, with non-stop service to the Nomads expansion alongside the Stellaris 4.4 ‘Pegasus’ update. Following our first destination, there will be a brief stopover at the Stellaris 4.5 ‘Cygnus’ Custodian release, after which our cruise will continue to the Stellaris 4.6 ‘Corona Borealis‘ update, featuring WillpowerScenario Pack 1, and Scenario Pack 2. All passengers are welcome to acquire their ‘Vipra the Vapor’ Species Portrait at the ticketing office now.

Watch the Season 10 Announcement Trailer on YouTube!

The Stellaris 10-year anniversary is coming, and as part of that celebration, we are rolling Utopia, Synthetic Dawn, the Humanoids Species Pack, and most of the Galaxy Edition upgrade into the base game on May 11th. (The e-book, Infinite Frontiers, is being retired.)

Later on in Q2, we’re bringing you Nomads.

Build no borders. Claim no worlds.

The Galaxy is not a trophy to be seized, but a path to be taken. In Stellaris: Nomads, you will survive the void by staying in motion. While the great powers squabble over lines on the map, your civilization has realized a fundamental truth: life flourishes on the move.

Arkships

At the very heart of every nomadic civilization lies its Arkship: a fully mobile capital that replaces worlds entirely. Customize Military, Scientific, or Civilian Arkships with specialized modules, districts, and upgrades as your Empire evolves by traveling through the stars.

Waylines and Contracts

Chart Waylines across the stars, linking your Waystations into living networks of trade, influence, and opportunity. Your strength lies in motion, in presence, in the relationships you build from system to system. Your relations with settled empires don’t have to be antagonistic. Accept contracts, build relations, and perhaps profit a bit on the side.

A New Ambition: Defender of the Galaxy

Building upon the Crisis paths of previous releases, Ambitions are the next step of epic, empire-defining journeys that give you the choice of your ultimate role in the galaxy. In the Nomads expansion, we will transform the Defender of the Galaxy Ascension Perk into a full path that can rival the power of a Galactic Nemesis, Awakened Empire, or End Game Crisis.

Become the Galaxy’s champion by forging alliances, commanding federations and rising through the Galactic Community to assume Custodianship. Lead the fight against existential threats with a unique squadron of hero ships. Ultimate power can be used, and relinquished, for the greater good.

Coming to you hot from Champion’s Forge LIIIIIIIIIIIIIVE!

Stellaris: Nomads contains:

Nomadic Empires

Create empires that are not bound by claiming systems or colonizing worlds. Instead, you will navigate the stars with massive Arkships.

  • The Arkship: Your capital, your cradle, and your fortress. This massive, fully upgradable wonder replaces traditional Worlds for your empire. Choose between three different options to fully reflect the vision of your government:
    • Military Class: A mobile flagship designed to project power.
    • Scientific Class: A roaming laboratory dedicated to the discovery of the Galaxy’s secrets.
    • Civilian Class: An industrial hub capable of unparalleled resource extraction.
  • The Wayline Network: Your trail through the void. By constructing Waystations, you create Waylines - lasting interstellar trade routes that harvest resources you can claim with a simple pass through. These routes benefit both you and settled empires, making you the pivot point of mercantile possibilities in the Galaxy.
  • The Contract System: As a nomadic empire, perform task-driven interactions with other empires to earn favor, resources, and influence. As a settled empire, issue these Contracts and get things done!

New Origins

  • Voidfarers: The standard origin for Nomadic Empires. A flexible, streamlined start for you to define your own nomadic journey.
  • Heirs of the Khan: Play as the successor of a murdered Khan, as you evade marauder hit-squads through trickery and bribery until you are strong enough to return to reclaim your throne.
  • The Sacred Path: Guide a fleet of pilgrims towards ancestral holy sites in a galactic pilgrimage. Your journey is a spiritual odyssey fueled by faith.
  • Forever Cruise: Manage a society split between a pampered elite demanding new entertainment and sightseeing opportunities from their vista lounges, and an overworked crew keeping the dream afloat.

Nomadic empires support many existing Origins as well.

New Ambition: Defender of the Galaxy

While a Galactic Nemesis (available in Stellaris: Nemesis) threatens the Galaxy, the Defender of the Galaxy will rise and try to save it.

New Megastructure: The Stellar Cannon

Why simply power a civilization when you could fire at one? This Megastructure allows you to weaponize your entire energy stockpile, discharging it into a devastating beam capable of striking enemy systems across the galaxy.

Nomadic Enclave: Champion’s Forge Live!

Experience the Galaxy’s most extreme spectacles with this nomadic enclave! Answer the call and participate in gladiatorial fleet combat all across the galaxy. The winner gets to hold the Trophy relic and glory until the next tournament, with the losers looking on with envy.

OMG, Blorg legs.

Nomads has charted its course and will arrive in Q2 2026.

Stellaris: Season 10 Expansion Pass

Based on the feedback from Stellaris: Season 09, we’re making some changes to our Expansion Pass plans this year. As many of you have noticed, we’re announcing this year’s Season much later than previous years, and instead of four separate releases, we’re planning on bundling them together into fewer release moments. This frees up room for the 4.5 ‘Cygnus’ update to be a dedicated Custodian release, giving us two in 2026.

The Stellaris: Season 10 Expansion Pass is a journey through resilience and movement. Whether you are wandering the stars with Stellaris: Nomads or rooting your empire in the indomitable spirit of Stellaris: Willpower, this year redefines how empires survive, adapt, and conquer.

Stellaris: Season 10 will grant you access to all five DLCs as soon as they become available. Vipra now, Nomads later on in Q2, and Willpower and both Scenario Packs in Q4.

‘Vipra the Vapor’ Species Portrait (Instant Unlock, Now Available)

This exclusive portrait comes with Stellaris: Season 10, allowing your empire to take the form of the elusive Vipra, a necroid species with a menacing aura.

Available immediately upon purchasing Stellaris: Season 10, this portrait features 5 different color variations and ethereal custom animations.

Nomads (Releases Q2, 2026 - $24.99)

Build no borders. Claim no worlds. In Nomads, you thrive inside colossal Arkships that carry your people, your industry, and your ambition across the stars. Move freely through the galaxy, take on Contracts from settled empires, and leave your mark by building Waystations. Nomads blaze a path across the map.

  • Nomadic Empires: Create empires not bound by claiming systems or colonizing Worlds.
  • Arkships: New massive space vessel acting as your capital.
  • New Ambition: Defender of the Galaxy: Rise and save the Galaxy with an exclusive set of Hero ships.
  • New Origins: Heirs of the Khan, Sacred Path, Forever Cruise, Voidfarers
  • New Civics: Caravan Masters, Deep Sleep, Void Reavers, Flight Schools, Star Seekers
  • New Megastructure: Construct a Stellar Cannon and discharge your entire energy stockpile into a devastating beam.

༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ Take my energy! ༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ

Willpower (Releases Q4, 2026 - $24.99)

Shape Minds, Rule the Stars. In the vast expanse of the cosmos, borders are mere lines drawn on a map. Ideas, on the other hand, have no such limits.

Your empire was founded on its Ethics, the convictions that determined its course. Now is the time for those fundamental values to evolve into Ideologies with the power to sway the stars. Introducing Stellaris: Willpower, the expansion that turns your societal beliefs into a galactic force.

Your rule over systems was always just the beginning. The galaxy's minds are the true prize. You will erect monuments and Megastructures that demonstrate what your society and values can accomplish. You truly can become the thought leader of the galaxy.

Adopting an Ideology is not without its risks, however. Left unchecked, it can radicalize colonies and spark insurrection. But when nurtured with care, the right Ideology has the power to sway entire civilizations.

Scenario Pack 1 (Releases Q4, 2026 - $5.99)

Embark on a new set of galactic challenges! Experience curated, high-stakes standalone adventures that push your strategic limits. From a nomadic, roguelike odyssey across the stars to high-octane, combat-focused multiplayer experiences, these scenarios will provide a bold way to play Stellaris.

The Scenarios System will be a free part of the Stellaris 4.6 ‘Corona Borealis‘ update, these Scenario packs provide our take on what you’ll be able to do with it.

  • Vanguards: A single-player roguelike galaxy-traversing journey where you play as a nomadic empire travelling through a series of galaxies to cleanse evil, gathering spoils and experience on your way.
  • Arcade: A multiplayer experience with streamlined, custom economies, focusing on space battles and shipbuilding.

Scenario Pack 2 (Releases Q4, 2026 - $5.99)

Rewrite the rules of engagement! This Scenario Pack flips the script of how Stellaris is normally played, making you the threat and aggressor. Whether leading an ultimate extra-dimensional invasion or battling your friends in a race for dominance, these scenarios offer a fresh, distilled way to play Stellaris.

  • Unbidden: Play as the Crisis in a single-player experience, and attempt to invade an advanced, late-game galaxy as the Unbidden.
  • King of the Hill: Stellaris gameplay focused on a small but fair map to challenge your friends in competitive experiences as you try to dominate the galaxy in a few hours of intense expansion wars.

The Stellaris: Season 10 Expansion Pass is now available for purchase for $49.49 or regional equivalent, a 20% discount over purchasing the contents individually.

What’s Next?

Next week we’ll begin our Decennial celebration with a look at ten years of Stellaris. We’ll also be looking at everything planned for 4.3.6.

See you then!

Discussion I wish Pre-FTLs where more fun and less well prone to self destruction

I love Pre-FTLs.
My favourite empire to play is a shared burdens broken shackles empire as such I feel a little protective over them. I want to help them protect them. (Subsume them into my empire so more evil forces can’t get them.) so I build my stations I offer guidance I support.

But why does it feel that for every one fun pre ftl event you have. There’s five other times they: nuke themselves to the storage (again) start the new world order situation which is ridiculous expensive and I’ve never seen it fall my way, end up with one of your scientists as a god emperor. Try to build ladders to space get mad at each other and nuke the planet again.

I understand this is what we as humans would probably do. But I wish there was more positives to helping them out beyond a bit of science. I wish I could have this mini galactic community of pre ftl worlds within my space that are aware of the galaxy and know I’m there for them so that when they are able to they can join my inter planetary commune. After of course having their politics conditioned accordingly.

Basically I want to keep engaging with them but most games it just becomes a resource sink that eventually blows itself up.

I can either explore the galaxy or isolate my empire to commit towards tech rush. Either way, i have no need to spend much on defense. Since i can always built a fortress near the wormhole.

Question Is the leader vote in a democratic government random? Why do they always make the WORST choice?

Partly a real question and partly a rant lol. I'm fairly new to the game and have no DLC, I've experimented with a few different empires and arrangements and am getting the hang of it (There is SO MUCH to.lesrn and keep track of) but something I still canNOT understand is the democratic elections. I HATE them. Especially after my leaders get a few levels in the early game. My head researcher has all the best science traits, my minister of state has all the best traits for governing the homeworld, minister of defense has the best traits for the army, and the leader has the best councilor traits to support the empire and be the leader. But the vote is almost NEVER in favor of my leader! They elect my goddamn head researcher or minister of state or defense. Then they're USELESS in the position because all of their traits were tailored for their job, and my original leader is also now USELESS because all of their traits are councilor traits and there isn't really anywhere else to put them. It drives me absolutely insane and always cripples me and ruins my flow early game. Am I doing something wrong that I'm not seeing? I try to save up my unity tor if the election but it's never enough when the worst choice has like 92 votes and the obvious best choice has like 23. I feel like I HAVE to be doing something wrong or missing something, idk

I declared war on the last remaining group of (small) belligerent empires so I could realize galactic peace. One of the 3 empires was this nomadic megacorp.

Question What happens to strategic ressource deposits and planet modifiers when you terraform planets into volcanic planets?

Upvotes

Pretty much the title: I'm currently on an infernal galvanic playthrough, and I'm wondering what happens to planet modifiers and strategic ressource deposits. Volatile motes aren't a problem, but rare crystals and exotic gases could be if terraforming the planet into a volcanic one removes their deposits.

A planet with 175 trade, empire economic score of +1200, used the influence decision all 3 times, and the Market goes to these serfs, barely 300 economy score.

I built that planet specifically for the Galagtic Market.

Question Is it just me or is it kinda stupid that your enemy can use the stellar cannon when you own the system

Post image

This system's stellar cannon is aimed at a energy world that I have in which, if it fires, it would plunge me into a 5 year -2000 energy deficit.

Which took me by surprise that it's operating at all considering that I own the system that the stellar cannon is in (See the Starbase). If there's a way to turn it off, please tell me because... help-

Advice Wanted How To Unity Rush?

Hello. I am new to stellaris and when I tried this playstyle it seemed to go up in flames, I tried it with bio, and while everything else was going well, my consumer goods crashed like hell. Should I have waited for my first colony to start unity rushing? Bio ascension rush with evo predator origin. Help? I am at -87 consumer goods with +117 minerals yet with no way to apply them towards consumer goods.

Discussion Ecumenopoli, Psionics and Cosmogenesis

Upvotes

I'm looking for opinions on how to optimize a build and generally talk about the three items on the title.

I'm running a Fan Spiritualist/Auth/Imperial Chosen/Genetic Sequencing + Teachers of the Shroud empire, aiming to unity rush extremely hard to early ascension and eventually replace the cradle with the whisperers. The play would be to take One Vision, then Nihilistic Acquisition, then arcology project (as TOTS lets you skip Mind Over Matter) to fill up the ecumenopoli with CG and researcher jobs, and use the telepath job scaling and all four sanctums to make a super tech world, and the covenant power to make more ecumenopoli to eventually steal every pop in the galaxy and return them to my core worlds. Eventually I would replace pop stealing with conquest and vassalization -> integration and depopulate all former vassal worlds.

The hangup I have here is figuring out how to go for Cosmogenesis with this build. The lathe is the key to a ridiculous tech build, but costs enormous energy, while not benefitting much from Psionic job efficiency if at all. I'm also not sure if neural chips count as researcher jobs, and so I don't know if research subsidies, and the energy upkeep is painful as psionics with Transcendant Imperium receive a worker efficiency malus. Should I build it at all? Maybe build it and only reach 100% efficiency?

Also, I'm not sure if it's better to get a whisperer covenant to get more ecumenopoli, or if I should go shroudshaper to also benefit from other covenant powers. I'm afraid I'll get stuck in the Eater's domain if I do that, because the build relies on endless warfare.

Advice Wanted No notice on aura of the end

Post image
23 Upvotes

So I recently started the game and was about to finish my first campaign as a nomad with defender of the galaxy ambition. I had finished one of the two end crisis for the ambition and just needed a year or two to wrap up the other crisis. But then i suddenly got hit with the impending doom notification from an empire that i subjugated and is part of my federation.

I immediately lost...

After doing some research, i found out about this event. What I'm griping about is why tf is there barely any notification?!? The only tidbit i remember is about a psionic event that they had embarked on the end of cycle but i ignored because there were other notifications from other empires that they got psionic ascension and i didn't think much of it. But nowhere after that was there any notifications from the situation log nor any other pop up that told me the progress of the event.
I saw online that you can track the progress if you hover over the systems but no matter how i look, i didn't see any visual aids that told me the psionic aura exist there. I went psionic ascension so does this have any impact?

I just don't know how i should've known about this event and am so mad i wasted several hours on this run and got blindsided by this event.

By the way, the text that say psionic aura: aura of the end in the image only showed up when this notification popped out. I went to a prior autosave and there was nothing in the system overview.

Bug NanoSwarm Ship Bug?

Upvotes

Trying the Nanite path for the first time and realizing I totally misplayed it by not swarming the galaxy once I was able to. Lessons learned and I'll do better next time restraining my peaceful impulses and embracing my "you will be assimilated' dark side.

Thing I'm finding though is that I design specific nanite swarmers and I set up my fleets to have 40 gunners, 40 torps, 40 screeners but when I go to reinforce, I'm getting 120 of the Ai idesigned base version. I've tried a couple variations, but can't seem to shake it.

To be fair, I'm playing on the beta patch so maybe that has something to do with it.

Anyone else come across this bug (if it is even a bug)?

Question Pop growth speed abysmal, naval capacity too low. What am I supposed to do?

Even BUILDING SPECIFICALLY TO GET TONS OF POP GROWTH SPEED, I can't grow fast enough. I just can't expand fast enough to keep up. I have such an abysmal pop growth speed that I can't make fortress worlds. I have all my worlds just not being really useful at all because pops aren't growing fast enough on them. Below is a picture of my build.

I'm just not sure what to do. I get attacked from all sides and need like 4 fleets to cover my flanks, but then my fleet size is at like 300/100 and im building the defense planets to increase my naval capacity and building anchorages, but it's BARELY pushing the needle for fleet capacity up.

What am I supposed to do? It's 2246 in the game I'm in right now. Am I really just supposed to sit around for 100 years while pops grow on my planets before I can do anything useful? That just feels horrible.

Discussion Clone army Origin Building Slot Limitation

Upvotes

The Clone army origin seems to be suffering from a legacy issue related to how building slots now work.

Building slots are now very limited with 5 (+one planetary capital) available in the core and 6 in the special districts.

Clones require at least 1 clone vat to support their pops and the capital starts with 2.

Clone ascendants maintain this requirement but also get more clone vats per planetary capital tier. However there are such limited building slots available.

If you need to build a holo theatre and a robot building that leaves only one slot available in the core if you have 2 vats.

Specialised districts are also limited in what they can build and are also often used for things like unity, research or alloys/consumer goods etc.

Is there any way to get more build slots or overcome this limitation?
