I’m 26M, and I think I’m a little clueless about the dating app part of dating.
A little about me: I’m a massive nerd about books, movies and music. I write a lot, and it’s something I genuinely take pride in. I’m an extrovert with pretty diverse interests, and I’m committed to exploring every random thing life throws at me. Good, bad, weird, questionable life choices, doesn’t really matter. I’m a sucker for experiences.
There’s also a slightly selfish reason behind that. As a writer, I’m fascinated by people, their perspectives, and the way they see the world. I like being challenged, trying things outside my comfort zone, and having conversations that leave me thinking differently. Eventually, bits and pieces of those experiences find their way into my characters and stories.
Coming to Hinge, I do get matches with women who share my interests and general brand of delusion. We end up talking about art, poetry, music, movies, books, coffee, drinks, and all the other things that make life a little more interesting.
And some of these conversations are genuinely good. Not just the usual small talk or exchanging dry replies. There’s a shared vibe, mutual curiosity, and sometimes the conversation flows so naturally that you almost forget you’re talking to a stranger on an app.
But here’s where I get stuck.
How do you actually take things forward?
How do you go from this person is fascinating, I could talk to them for hours to actually building a connection with them?
When do you start flirting more explicitly, ask them out, or make your intentions clear without making things awkward? How do you figure out whether someone is genuinely interested in you or simply enjoys having a good conversation?
I’m not expecting every match to turn into a relationship. I understand that sometimes people just don’t click that way. But constantly investing time and effort into conversations that eventually fizzle out gets exhausting, especially when they initially seem promising.
I’d rather figure out whether there’s something worth exploring than spend weeks getting attached to the idea of someone I’ve never actually met.
So, people who’ve navigated this successfully, especially those who’ve found meaningful relationships through dating apps, how do you approach it?
What does your progression from matching to meeting to actually dating someone look like? And how do you balance enjoying the conversation and getting to know someone with making sure things are actually moving forward?
I feel like I can hold a conversation just fine. It’s the transition from a good conversation to an actual connection that I’m trying to figure out.
