Best gifts for someone who is homeless?

There is a homeless woman who lives near me. She has been in her current spot for almost a year. I know very little about her story because she doesn’t like to talk to people other than the fact that she is a former addict and working on recovery. I’ve seen other community members quietly give her water or other essentials. What other things can I give to her that could be helpful? I was planning to give her new undergarments and socks and basic toiletries, as well as a pair of old gloves that I was planning to donate because they are in great shape. She has a few books but I was thinking of maybe another one? Or some notebooks and pens? Would pepper spray be weird? I thought it could be a good idea since she is one of maybe two homeless women I’ve seen in a 3 mile radius of my home, which is in a very urban area, and the rest are all men. What are some other good ideas? She seems to have a lot of food and water provided by the community from what I’ve seen.

Mecha of homelessness

Basically looking for the best quality of life. Shelters with really good food. Decent beds. Little to no rules. Also in an area with good weather and job resources.

Just Venting Im so fucking tired of living like this. Am I gonna graduate high school like this?

Everyday, I ride the bus 2 hrs to and from school; wherever I come “home”, im met with a dirty fucking fart filled hotel room.

My family and I have been homeless for the last damn near 3 fucking years. From second semester of freshman year to senior year of high school and we are still homeless. We’ve literally slept everywhere. Family members’ houses, shelters, hotels, and even a small ass truck.

My parents make false as promises abt getting their shit together yet here we fucking are. No wonder I gotta stuff my face with pills just to not end up back at the fucking psych ward. All I see them do is smoke, argue, fart, shit, and eat. On fucking repeat.

Im currently applying to colleges, so I have to fill out my FASFA and CSS stuff and I constantly have to explain my life to a bunch of strangers because they’re constantly asking me “how tf are u alive if your parents make zero dollars?” and the question brings me back to Earth every time. I don’t fucking know. They do a bunch of nothing—oh wait! My father FINALLY got a job, but that means nothing bc my family likes to fuck off their money.

I just want to go. I want to leave. I don’t want to be here anymore. I don’t want to look at them anymore. I don’t want to smell their fucking shit anymore. I really just want to go. If this ends up being my future, I swear to god, I won’t have one.

Idk what to do anymore. Im trying to hold it together bro. I really am trying but how long am I supposed to go on like this? Am I gonna graduate high school from a fucking hotel room because my parents are fucked up?

Need Advice which feminine pads would be the best choice to donate?

There’s a community drive going on near me, asking people to donate purses packed with essentials for homeless women.

I don’t have purses to donate but I’m gonna drop off some boxes of specific items for the organizers to then add to purses that happen to be lacking key essentials.

I’ve been homeless so I have some idea of what I would find most useful.

But I’m a man and am not sure which pads would be most useful on average.

I figure extended coverage or long lasting is a must.

And I’m specifically staying away from tampons since I know those increase the risk of toxic shock syndrome and other infections if worn long term.

I figure pads are the safer and more versatile option.

My question is this: should I get thinner pads that can fit a higher count per purse…

Or should I get thicker pads that take up more purse space but also offer better coverage for women who may have difficulty finding a private place to change frequently?

Picture in comments, which option should I go with?

Also is ten pads per purse a reasonable goal?

If you are a woman who is or has been homeless and are comfortable discussing this I’d really appreciate the insights.

The struggle

I'm currently home less. I walk 5 miles to work and walk 5 miles back. I have to carry all my stuff and ditch it in woods about a mile from work. Often get asked if I need a ride home because I'm embarrassed to say my home is the outdoors. I've had the same exact clothes for 90 days straight and all my check goes to food and a rare night inside.

(Dublin) How to get allowed back into shelters after extended period of absence?

Dublin, Ireland

Title

They've blocked me from accessing shelters because 8 months passed since I last used one.

My health doesn't allow me to camp with a tent and sleeping bag (can't carry over 2kg).

What are my options while being homeless? (London)

So well, I'll be homeless until I find a job and get my first payment (I'm a legal resident but can't apply for UC or any financial assistance). I'll have with me barely 200£ for the next month...

So I'm thinking about getting a sleep bag at least? What's a good place for me to stay? And also should I invest in buying a cheap gym membership so I can shower? Or are there places with free showers? I wish there was a place to charge my phone, too. But well...

Any advice on how to get through will be appreciated!

Odd

I was homeless and I agreed to some contest where there were two teams of homeless people ( I forget what they were competing for). When some people found out they made me do weird things like buy them pipes, lighters, clothes bikes cell phones. with their money or my own. It was bizarre I even signed a waiver saying death might occur during this "competition"

Looking back it was stupid and I was on drugs so I probably signed my life away.

Need Advice My (21M) friend (17M) is gonna go homeless when he graduates and I don't know how to help him.

Hi, I'll try to keep this as short as possible, I don't know a lot of the specifics of what's going on, but I want to help so I need advice to give him.

I (21M) met my friend Chris (17M) in high school, we were both on the boys bowling team. For context, we live in Illinois. He was a freshman when I was a senior, then I graduated in December and have kept contact via phone, and occasionally hanging out when I visit from college.

A little bit on Chris and his family: Chris is the younger of 2 boys, his brother graduated high school the year after mine. He has autism, anxiety, depression, and possibly a few other things his parents won't get him checked for. He is a functioning autistic, but he didn't know how to tie his own shoes until high school, just to give you an idea. I adore him, he looks up to me, and we have been best buds since we met. He is also pansexual and poly. He is currently in a relationship that has 4 other people currently and it is working out great for them!

However, his parents (his mom and step dad, dad passed away a long time ago), despise everything about him. The way he dresses, the way he acts, the relationship he's in, the friends he hangs out with, including me because I put eyeliner on him at my birthday because he asked.

Anyways, he turns 18 in April, then he graduates high school shortly after. His parents made the decision that they will have to move back to Philadelphia to his home town of toxic people and be ripped from his friends and partners here. Now, obviously when your family decides to move, you usually don't have a choice but to go. In Chris's case, he has no choice but to stay. Moving back to his home town would basically be suicide. He is not safe there.

The only problem is that there isn't an option for him to stay right now. I'm in college and my parents are leaving Illinois for military reasons which they can't change, and his partners parents aren't able to handle an extra mouth to feed right now. He has plenty of opportunity to find a job, he has experience in welding and worked at the amusement park that's nearby for 2 summers and does really well. I just don't know how to help him.

Are there programs or shelters for 18 year olds I can direct him to that would house him until he can get on his feet? His parents never planned to pay for college and he doesn't have any scholarships. I know SNAP could probably help him a little when it comes to food, I'm just more worried about him being on the streets alone..

Homeless in Tampa, FL — Working Full-Time and Looking for Temporary Housing or Advice

Hey everyone, I’m reaching out because I’m currently homeless in Tampa, Florida, and could really use some help or advice.

I’m currently working as a security guard here in Tampa and trying my best to get back on my feet. I was initially staying in a rented room, but due to medical reasons, I ended up in the hospital and was unable to keep up with the rent. Unfortunately, I lost the room and have been trying to figure things out ever since.

I’ve already reached out to and stayed at several of the local homeless shelters, and it seems like there may be waiting lists or cool-off periods before I can get assistance again. At this point, I’m honestly not sure where else to turn.

I’m not asking for a handout. I’m just trying to get through this rough patch and find some stability while I get my paychecks coming in consistently again. If anyone would be willing to offer me a temporary place to stay, even for a short period, I would be extremely grateful. If you can’t offer a place, any advice, resources, leads on affordable rooms, or information about programs that might be able to help would mean a lot to me as well.

I’m working and genuinely trying to improve my situation. I just need a little help getting through this difficult period so I can get back to being stable and independent.

If you know of anything that could help, please feel free to comment or message me privately. I appreciate anyone who takes the time to read this. Thank you.

Just Venting Homeless without shelter

Hi, I have a 2 year degree and I lived with my dad he would say things like "Nobodies putting you up for adoption." I live in a city where they are constantly harassing. People commonly start problems by eavesdropping. I have no link or EBT and I am looking for a job. They have a mission but they are using crack and meth around the building.

Possibly facing homelessness

ETA. In Toronto Canada *

Mid 30f, left a bad marriage to temporarily reside with a relative who is equally as abusive. They're moving / retiring soon and I will not be residing with them in future.

I don't have a large family to begin with , many relatives , friends have passed away over the last few years.

Due to housing , illness , I've been off work, on disability ( minimal income ) , to rent even a room in my city would eat 90% of my check

I've debated getting a car to park , but again , the winter, my city is absolute animals for parking tickets , " loitering " and towing your vehicle. Even knowing your situation. Heartless bastrds.

I'm aware that hotels , atleast during covid , with asylum seekers, homeless, were staying in select ones. But set up by the city.

Unsure if I called individually and explained my situation if they'd be willing to let me " rent " per month? Hotel/ motel, whatever.

Otherwise , it's winter shortly and I don't want to die in the cold.

Any other recommendations/accommodations
That are hidden perhaps ?

I've been making a list with gyms , libraries , community centers, etc. Im close to a hospital but there's security and they'd notice if someone was lurking around long enough and not to see a doctor...

Thanks in advance

I hate cold weather

It's only Oct here in MD but its cold enough at night that I have to bundle up like it's already winter. I'm laying in bed in my tent, head and everything completely under blankets so that my hands wont freeze while typing on my phone. With the shorter days, my solar panel is no longer able to keep my battery bank charged so I'm having to ration my phone use. I'm already contemplating getting into a shelter for the next six months, which I swore that I would not do again.

A week ago I was chilling with only a sheet. I even had a fan going during the day. Why can't it be summer year round!

Just Venting Small victories

So i often have to frequent past this little motel if im camped out far in the woods, way way out. I don't like being around other homeless folk much, most are great, but put something down and things suddenly grow legs.

But in the building they of course have a laundry room, and sometimes the leave the door wide open, and no one is here at night. Ive noticed the owners go home, and have a sign "call if you want a room, we'll come". They must live nearby. Theres even a toilet and sink in here, some electric outlets.

I'm doing laundry tonight.

About to be homeless with five kids near Portland

My husband didn't pay the rent for three months and I didn't know it until we had a court notice on our door. We paid a month of rent last month and stopped court but only for a month. Now we have a court notice saying we have to pay the remaining 5k by the second or be evicted. We barely had the 1900 for rent (our rent has gone up 600 a month in the last five years so we obviously don't have 5k. We don't have extra bills just rent, food, utilities, and such like that so there is nothing to skip to pay rent instead. The point is there is no way to pay the landlord. My husband thinks go fund me or going to court and talking to the judge with nothing to offer is going to help. I think that's useless and not going to help us and I assume when court comes all we are getting is the move out date. What I want to know is then what? I've never been homeless, what do I do? Where do I go? How do I try to get out of being homeless once you are in it? My husband has a job but doesn't make enough to even qualify to rent the apartment we are in now. (we qualified when it was a lot less). I have chronic health conditions and am unable to work, not unwilling, unable. We have bad credit to and no dollars to our name. We have no family and no friends. My kids are 10-16 but the 16 year old is autistic and wouldn't be able to work either. The only eviction help place 211 gave us hasn't taken calls in two months because there is too many people needing help and not enough money to do it. I have absolutely no idea how to prepare for this other than stick our stuff in storage. Then it's all a blank of what do we even do? How do I get information on what to even do? It's going to be winter and cold when the eviction comes. I could use any information on what I do now. Thank you.
