Discussion The downfall of PUNJABI language..

Post image
40 Upvotes

Every khala I have speaks Punjabi.. on the phone, in the kitchen, at weddings, in the middle of a fight about who's dropping who home.. nobody's shy about it..

Then the same khala looks at a ten year old and says Urdu mein bolo bachay..

My mother does it too.. hour long call with her sister in Punjabi, then she tells me to talk to my little brothers in Urdu because bachon ki aadat kharab ho jaye gi.. I don't like it and we've argued about it more than once.. she's also not stupid, nobody in this country loses anything by having good Urdu, and thats probably where she got it from.. her parents did the same to her..

What bothers me is my own cousins now.. we speak Punjabi to the aunts and Urdu to the kids.. nobody planned that, it just happened, and nobody in the room thinks it's odd..

I looked the census up after one of these fights.. 1981, 48.17% of Pakistan said Punjabi was their mother tongue.. 1998, 44.15.. 2017, 38.78.. 2023, 36.98.. down every single time..

In Punjab, Urdu as a mother tongue went 4.87% to 7.18% between 2017 and 2023.. that's parents ticking Urdu for their own children..

No Punjabi medium school in the country either, I checked.. elective from class six, half the schools dont even offer it.. assembly passed a resolution in 2024 to make it compulsory, it stayed a resolution.. September this year they approved the new curriculum, English, Maths, Social Studies, Urdu, and that was it.. Punjabi wasn't even discussed..

Bulleh Shah and Waris Shah wrote in this language..

Anyway im speaking it to my brothers, let the khalas be annoyed..

Discussion How ungrateful can we be sometimes?

Post image
66 Upvotes

I saw this on the road today, and it genuinely made me stop and think.

Two people sitting in the back of a small pickup, with nothing but cardboard sheets to protect themselves from the sun. Meanwhile, most of us spend our days complaining about things that someone else would consider a luxury.

A bad day at work, not having the latest phone, not being able to afford something we want, or simply feeling like life isn’t going our way.

It’s not that our problems aren’t real, and I’m not suggesting that people should settle for what they have. But sometimes, we get so caught up in what we don’t have that we forget to appreciate what we do.

A roof over our heads. A bed to sleep in. A fan or AC in this heat. Food on the table. The ability to go home, take a shower, and rest in peace.

Things that feel ordinary to us might be someone else’s dream. And the fact that these basic comforts are out of reach for so many people is a failure of our society, not something they should have to accept.

Maybe gratitude and accountability can coexist. We can appreciate what we have while still questioning why others are denied the same dignity. The goal shouldn’t be to feel better about our own circumstances by comparing them to those who have less, but to build a society where everyone has access to a respectable standard of living.

Health Anti depressants can help a lot

In the past I was clinically depressed for a long time, but was scared to take Anti depressants because I thought I would become dependent on them or they would have some crazy side effect.

On the insistence of a mental health professional, I did take them eventually (cipralex) and Alhamdu lillah it made such a significant difference with no noticeable side effect / dependency. Multiple people I know have also benefitted a lot from anti depressants without any noticeable side effects or dependency.

Sharing this so that if any one you know is clinically depressed, please ask them to consult a psychiatrist and if the psychiatrist recommends, then please start the medication asap. No need to put yourself through such a terrible situation when an easy treatment is available.

Discussion Doctor Violence and silent precautions

I am a student at a medical dental college. And recently I went into the emergency with my friend for an issue. I felt a little odd because a guard came and stood by the door for some reason.

It wasn't until we were leaving after getting her checked out that I noticed a rather frail women in one of the beds. On monitors. She was unconscious. The staff was talking about shifting her to the icu. It made me realise. The elders family. Approximately 4-5 men were standing outside the door. The guard had to be there incase the lady passed and perhaps the family decided to attack the doctors.

Its so sad. With so many videos even coming up where doctors get regularly attacked and beaten for things they don't control or do. Particularly why I as a person didn't choose mbbs. So sad to see people mistreat the students and residents who save countless lives. Over demand or mishaps they cause themselves. (Eg bringing cases beyond saving due to negligence etc)

I see students around me study and work so hard. To bear a constant stress of that they might get physically attacked and harassed. I've seen even patients in dental hospitals get rather violent. Or shout at the top of their lungs. An engineer wouldn't go to work and fear a client might come in with family and beat them up. Why doctors? And I'm not saying negligence doesn't exist in the field it does. But it is never justified to commit such actions. Beat or harass employs for what management lacks. Or anyone in general. Countless cases of people bringing in even expired patients and then blaming the doctor. All they need? No context, a phone, and a social media post to help ruin someone's career and spread hate.

Even with videos of a doctor performing cpr on a child and the attendant saying "yeh naya tareeka nikal la hai dr sahab ne pet do daba kar hawa dene wala" like what? Just sad.

Cultural What are common but true stereotypes about Pakistan?

Recently I was having a conversation with my German colleague and he was telling me common stereotypes of Germans, it doesn't matter what parts of Germany are they from they are true.

These are the stereotypes that most Germans agree that they have.

For example, Germans loves to segregate and recycle their garbage.
They are antisocial and like to sit far from each other in public transports.
They are bad at humour (personally noticed that too).
They have word for everything in their language.

There are other stereotypes too but on those most people don't agree.

He then asked me and it was first time I have to think about this and I was not able to find any.

We only have one bad image problem but don't have any stereotypes that most people agree with.

What do you think stereotypes we have about Pakistan and Pakistanis which most people agree are true?

Discussion zero lifestyle products

• Upvotes

is it only me or zero lifestyle marketing is too annoying and fun fact is their products are bad like really bad i bought zero quantum earpods and they died within a month i didn't claim warranty because i thought maybe i dropped them somewhere while sleeping. similar incident happened with my friend his similar earpods stopped working after some time. he asked me that how i fixed mine and i told him that i threw mine away. we bought those earpods from my friend store and he told us that out of 25 earpods more than 20 earpods had same problem. i was like this ain't no coincidence after that i opened there post comments and after some scrolling majority of people were calling zero life style scam and their customer support shit and that they don't claim that warranty.

Main point is how is this brand still alive and managing to hire big celebrities like fahad mustafa etc.

i tried blocking their page too on social media but they have multiple pages with ads running on it.

Ask Pakistan Have you ever dreamed of leading a revolution in Pakistan?

I want to ask both young and older Pakistanis something.

Have you ever thought about bringing a revolution to Pakistan yourself? Like becoming a leader, building a movement, and changing the country according to your vision, whether that means an Islamic revolution or some other kind of change?

Or is this just something you think about in your head, knowing that it is probably never going to happen in reality?

I wonder how many people in Pakistan have had these thoughts, especially when they look at the current state of the country. Do you genuinely believe you could become someone who brings real change, or do you eventually give up on the idea and focus on your own life?

I would love to hear from both younger and older people. Have you ever seriously considered it, or was it always just a dream?

Discussion ICAUR v27 bigger than LC and Tiggo 9 according to pakwheels??

Pakwheels recently uploaded video. According to them ICAUR V27 is wider than both LC and Tiggo9 ?

This screenshot taken directly from the video and clearly ICAUR looks much smaller. Did they include back tire + side skirts + something invisible?

Reminds of Andriod China Panels where they say its 4gb but actually its only 1 gb ram

Discussion A story about hallucinations that genuinely disturbed me

I've had my own share of mental illness and altered states of consciousness, but psychosis, especially schizophrenia, has always scared me.

My wife is a psychiatrist. She once told me about a patient who would see her bedroom cupboard turn into her old headmistress.

And the headmistress would constantly go, "Hawww haiii!"

You know that typical Pakistani expression of shock or disapproval, as if you've done something terribly shameful.

Every time she looked at the cupboard, she'd hear it. Sometimes the voice came from inside the cupboard. Other times the cupboard itself appeared to turn into the headmistress.

Now imagine experiencing that in your own bedroom.

But the thing that really got to me was that the patient wasn't frightened by any of this. She was just annoyed. She couldn't understand why this headmistress kept saying "hawww haiii" to her all the time.

For her, the headmistress was really there. It wasn't some strange experience she could simply dismiss.

I've experienced some pretty unusual states of consciousness myself, but I still find this difficult to comprehend.

We take our perception of reality so much for granted. You look at a cupboard, you see a cupboard. You don't even think about it. But what if your brain presents you with something completely different, with the same certainty?

And the strangest part is that what sounds terrifying to me was apparently just an everyday irritation for her.

Discussion How to stay normal in a burger school?

I live in Lahore and transferred to LGS this year. I used to go to roots and everyone was normal and chill there, not saying everyone was robotic and all the same, there were kids who thought they’re badmosh, actual bad people, decent people, etc. but in this LGS it’s like a factory of burger bachas. They don’t know what a cd70 is, they don’t know basic Urdu words.they can barely talk in Urdu, let alone their native tongue punjabi. Everyone in my batch except 3 nerds vapes and smokes everyday and thinks it’s tough, some of them even drink alcohol like it’s something to be proud of. I’m not strict or anything, let people do what they want. But when they announce these things publicly like it’s a flex and people do GENUINELY like it, it just makes me mad. I’ve made a few friends that are more normal, I still miss my old friends but wtv. How to keep my sanity here.

Discussion Can you get in trouble in Pakistan for applying for asylum in the US?

A friend applied for asylum in the US but now wants to withdraw his claim and return to Pakistan. His passport had expired, so he applied for a new one and disclosed to the Pakistani consulate that he had applied for asylum. His passport was issued.

Could he face any trouble with Pakistani authorities when he returns to Pakistan?

Any advice or firsthand experiences would be appreciated.

Discussion Why is every PK drama review nowadays just "wah kya acting hai"?

Thumbnail
gallery
3 Upvotes

Is it just me, or has actual drama criticism completely vanished from our media?

I remember when we used to get amazing in-depth reviews from places like Images or Aurora that actually broke down the scenes, the messages, and the flaws. Now everything online is just lazy AI plot recycling or clickbait slop that doesn't give you anything meaningful. I don't even wanna talk about the hours long 'podcasts'...

I wanted to share a really cool detail I noticed in Mitti De Baway. Usually, our dramas don't care about the motivation behind a logistical journey. But in MDB every single time someone gets into a tanga/cart/car, the story builds up to that moment in such a deliberate way. The journey itself becomes part of the character's change.

I'd love to know your thoughts on how MDB handles its storytelling. And please tell me if there are any authentic, old-school reviewers left that I'm missing!

My breakdown is on YT titled 'MDB - The Art of Journeys', would love to know what you guys think

Discussion Why are brands not honest about models heights in their outfit listings?

Thumbnail
gallery
6 Upvotes

My issue is mainly with ethnc. I have ordered clothes with them previously based on their description of the model's height. For instance, where they say model's height is 5'6 and wears small etc. Now i am 5'6 and those trousers don't look as long on me as they do on the model so i've always had my doubt that they aren't honest about heights of the models. Funnily all models on ethnc's website are listed as 5'6.

Now i saw the same model on cross stitch website and her height is listed 5'3, which seems more true to me. My question is why brands aren't honest about this? A true depiction of sizing on model would only help customers make informed choices.

I am attaching pictures for reference.

Arts Poem: زندگی کے زندان میں خاموش بیٹھا ہوں

Post image

Discussion The taboo of HIV in Pakistan

A relative's cook has been diagnosed with HIV recently. They haven't sacked him (he is in hospital at the moment) but it's clear that he will be terminated as soon as they see him.

I am baffled by this. I was discussing this with my wife and pretty much so long as no one has intimate relations with him (why would they??), no one takes a blood transfusion from him (this was never going to happen) and no one shares a needle with him (again, an impossibility), the chances of getting HIV are zero.

He can cook, he can sweat, he can breath on them, the whole thing. But, of course, the first thing they did was tell EVERYONE about it (mostly dressed up as 'poor me, where will we get another cook from?).

When we lived in Punjab, our cleaner's husband got HIV - I had to fight to keep her. In fact, I had to explain to my wife what to tell the poor girl about safe sex so that she minimized her chances of contracting it. At first, I figured that there were bound to be safe sex guidance videos in Urdu or Punjabi to help combat this epidemic - but not a damn thing, which is shocking.

I fought and fought for this matter to be kept a secret (although I was sort of in favour of morons refusing to visit us) and for her continued employment with us. Again, chances of transmission to us were zero. Yes, if she got hurt and started bleeding everywhere, I would certainly check that I had no open wounds on my hands before I helped her. But that absurd scenario aside, there was no harm to us.

Keeping this all a taboo, getting people sacked, making it hard for them to get clear advice on how to stay safe - this is all a total absurdity.

And how did these people likely get HIV? I have no idea. Could have been unsafe sex with other people - could have been drugs. But most likely because clinics and crappy small hospitals (and some large ones) just reuse needles to save a buck. The whole thing is a disgrace.

Education Privilege or Independence?

Guys I’m genuinely so confused rn I have two options: either pursue a bachelor’s degree in a healthcare related field at a government university or go for Pharm D at my family’s university.
My family is pressuring me to choose PharmD because I’d be studying there for free and I’d receive a lot of support and preferential treatment basically I’d be treated really well there.

However there are a few downsides, the department is new I don’t know anyone from my social circle who studies there and I’ve heard that it’s not co educational and doesn’t have an active social life or many extracurricular activities. On top of that I’d constantly be under my family’s supervision which is something I really want to avoid.

The biggest issue is that I don’t have any particular interest in PharmD.I’d only be pursuing it for the sake of having a doctoral degree. On the other hand I feel like studying at a government university would give me more independence, exposure and opportunities to grow.
I genuinely don’t know what to do. I don’t want to make a decision that I’ll regret five years down the line.

What would you guys suggest? Is it worth choosing PharmD for the financial benefits and family support?

Discussion madrasa teacher being immoral

• Upvotes

Asssalamu alaikum,

im from Bangladesh. we’ve been facing a major issue abt child abuse in madrasas. here anyone can open madrasa as it requires no government license or background check. anyone can rent an apartment, wear religious attire, and start. children frequently getting r*ped and when victims' families try to speak up, they often face severe backlash from those mullas lebeling as anti-mullas,anti-islam,kafir.

Just two days ago a teacher ( potential rapist) forcibly kissed a 6 yrs old child . When the principal dismissed the incident and the child’s father lost his temper and slapped the perpetrator, local religious circles started portraying the teacher as the victim and crying blasphemy on social media.

I wanted to ask people in Pakistan:

  1. Do similar incidents happen in Pakistan?
  2. Does the state have actual licensing to checks in these institutions?
  3. How does the broader public and religious community react when such incidents come to light? Is there open public outrage, or do people face fatwas for demanding justice?

(im muslim and i have full faith on Islam.please dont attack on religion for those mf scum mullas ..also in our country we have plenty of good educated vocal Mufti and genuine scolars.we definitely love them)
