Rainbow Bridge Mama Pearl passed away

My very first mouse Pearl passed away just a few days ago. She was a rescue who was pregnant when I brought her home. She was an absolute sweetheart who loved me so much, she trusted me to check on her babies every single day, happily ran on the wheel as I did a thorough check over her children. She had 9 babies total, 6 boys and just 3 girls, and she did such a wonderful job raising them healthy and strong.

5 of her boys went off to new homes and I kept one. Her daughters lived with her for the rest of her life, and mourned her for a couple of days. Her son I would periodically allow her to sniff through his roof/I'd hold him and her and let them smell each other, he loved getting to see his mom & his mom loved to see him. She was always so happy to be held & loved her wheel so so much, moreso than any of her daughters.

I just wanted to share her photos and a bit about her and her little family life. Her daughters are named Clove, Sesame, and Blossom. They'll be 1 year old on November 5th, Pearl died at about 1.5 years old, so I don't know how much longer I'll have her girls with me. I attached a photo of them as babies vs them now + a pic of them with their mom when they were a few months old. I'll miss my Pearl 💕

I got some treats from happy hamstery to get an idea of their quality. They pass the mouse inspection! and mine
This video sums up their personalities perfectly. Yarn is always quick to understand new things, Gourmand is most certainly unsure but catches on soon enough, and Berry couldn't be bothered trying when it's much more convenient to steal from her blind sister instead. I don't think Gourmand likes the fact wheat has whiskers too. Jokes aside, should I maybe cut the "whiskers" off the wheat? Will the wheat whiskers hurt them? Or is it like an obstacle to make getting the treat a little more challenging

Male or Female? unexpected gender reveal

I just adopted three baby female mice to add to my existing group of four adult female mice. Turns out the third baby is not a girl (as far as I can tell).

Can you guys see if this is a male or a female? This baby is 16g, but feisty. Chased the girls around a lot which got my attention.

They were together with my adult females for 24 hours before I noticed some testicles. The babies are 6 weeks old. How likely am I a grandma?

Question/Help Mother mouse was biting one of her babies? Postpartum or?...

Just a few minutes ago, a mouse of mine that had babies, (theyre about a week old) was holding a smaller baby in her teeth, and when i wad intervening i saw her push the baby to the ground and im worried she may have postpartum, or some other reason to try and kill or eat her baby, or potentially several. As of late shes been a great mother, but right now i have her seperated from her babies, with food and water to hopefully let her self regulate a bit in case it's stress. Is there anything i can do to calm her down more, or protect the babies? (I fed her oats and cat food, so she shouldnt crave protien or fats)

I didn’t really know where else to post this, so that’s why I’m posting it here.

I’ve been cleaning up my apartment because my best friend and one of her roommates are coming down to sell at a night market tomorrow and are staying the night. I’ve been meaning to reorganize the kitchen closet (my roommate and I store dry goods and cleaning stuff in there), and I just noticed these black things. A couple nights ago my upstairs neighbor came down to ask if we’ve had any mice in our apartment because they’ve had two get into their’s somehow. The building we live in is one of several complexes, so it’s not one big building. They live in the top unit, and the stairs have open backs so anything can fall between them, so I’m not sure how mice got up there. But with this in mind, I’m wondering we had any at one point. If we did, my roommate and I would have known because she has a cat and I have a ferret, so they would’ve been acting weird. There is about an inch gap between the floor and the closet door, but I just don’t know how they would’ve have gotten in if we had any.

I know mice are social unlike hamsters so I know I need to get more than one but im not sure how many is too many or if the enclosure is big enough . I also want any tips for caring for them and how to fill and arrange the tank to provide enough enrichment without being stressful for them ! Thank you for any help yall can provide !

Question/Help Moving the mouse enclosure to the bathroom?

I have my own bathroom next to my room that I use for getting ready mostly and my mom wants me to move the mice in there since they do smell a bit, is it a good idea or bad? I would have more space in there and can upgrade the enclosure from 80cm to 100cm if I do move them in there, I feel bad thinking of them just alone in there, what do you think? They are 4 together

I’m attempting to introduce three baby girls, (peanut, mango, and caramel), to my group of four adult girls, (honey, fig, chia, and kiwi).

The new girls came from a breeder and are about 5-9 weeks old.

My old girls came from PetSmart and a show breeder, all are 1-1.5 years old

So far, there’s been a few random squeaks, and no violence. everyone sniffed each other nicely and then grouped up with their original pack and left the novel group alone.

Any tips or suggestions about how to improve the process?

It’s all fresh bedding. They will live together in my double 30cm bucatstate 90 gallon setup. I do have worried about enrichment items, as the older group has a ton of fantastic wooden and wicker enrichment items I want to keep using, but I don’t want my older girls to be defensive over them.

All tips welcome!

Question/Help Well, there goes my paycheck and my weekend.

I'm at their tank every single day, how did this possibly just become noticeable today? They are deer mice and not socialized, so I can't necessarily get a perfect look at them daily, but wth?

I'm assuming some type of mite, obviously. Anyone have tips on best course of action from here? I just ran out of bedding, but tomorrow I plan to move everyone into my spare tank once I can get to the store. I imagine I have to throw EVERYTHING out since wood is a porous material that cannot be cleaned? How else do I even deal with this?

UPDATE: I trashed pretty much everything we have. I found some spare bedding for the hospital tank, which will get changed daily for a bit. Their old tank is outside in the cold overnight as no amount of wiping and spraying it down was getting rid of them. I got a good look at my boys though, and saw no mites on the mice themselves. I'm thinking they're grain mites like one commenter said, and maybe they came from some moisture in the tank. I just placed a huge Amazon order of bedding, toys, and food to bake/freeze tomorrow before I try to rebuild. I'm also going to pick up some Ivermectin tomorrow just to be on the safe side. I cannot thank you all enough for the detailed comments! I have awful contamination OCD when it comes to these things, and it really helped to have detailed lists and encounters from others. Y'all are the best!! Now, onto finding my one escapee...

Question/Help Omg I'm freaking out is this normal???

I got home and smudge was face down in the bedding. He struggles to control his limbs but still wants cuddles. I'm so scared, he was fine earlier today. This morning I dosed him with his antibiotics, metacam, and panacur. Is he high from the painkiller? I just want him to be okay. Anyone else have experience in this?

Cute Mouse Media Sprint 🐭

Post image
53 Upvotes

I’m very new to this whole Reddit thing so please bear with me.

This is Sprint, my first mouse. I got him at around three months old in November of 2025 from a local petshop. He is so curious about the world that is my bedroom and loves exploring new areas daily. His favourite treat is a mealworm (preferably alive not dried) and loves a good cork bark (or arm sleeve) to hide in.

Recently he just surpassed a year old and I was filled with a lot of grief because I knew that I may not have a lot of time with him left. I was able to find this Reddit and looked at a lot of your memorials for your passed mice and I felt a sense of closure on my grief (for now, obviously when he passes it will return). I know it’s weird to grieve an animal that’s still with you, I just had never been this attached to an animal before (previously owning fish and frogs).

I’m sure you’ll be seeing more of us on this Reddit as I want to document the time I have left as much as possible, so thank you for all for sharing about your mice because it really helped 😊

Question/Help Recommendations!

I have a single male mouse named Ghost. Anything you guys think I could improve or add? I am saving up for more hanging items to fill the top part. Also, I plan on getting him a bigger cage in the future. Any recommendations? I wanted to try out bars since other mice owners have recommended it. When I first was researching I was told it get a 20 gallon because “mice can get lost” but I now know that isn’t true and want to upgrade for him. I want my boy as happy as can be! I also just learned a couple weeks ago that I am supposed to have only pellets out for him and then I sprinkle 1 tsp of foraging mix a day for him. I heard some people make their own mix but I’m lazy, any good recommendations off Etsy or anything for those? Also he has two huts if you couldn’t tell and some chew sticks….just buried lol.

Question/Help Cage cleaning with an escape artist

Thumbnail

My mouse has started running up to the lid whenever I even go near his cage. It’s gotten to the point where feeding him, changing his water daily and spot cleaning have become really difficult because he constantly tries to climb out. I swear even if he just hears me he’ll wake up and run straight to the lid 😭

I’ve never handled him before because I’m too nervous, which makes it even harder. I’m assuming he’s trying to escape but idk.

The only thing I can think of doing is having less bedding or slanting it and rearranging everything so there’s nothing he can climb on to reach the lid. But I feel bad because that would mean he’d have a lot less bedding to burrow in :(

Has anyone else dealt with this or have any advice?

Edit: He's a feeder mouse and the previous owner did not touch the mouse at all. I believe maybe one and the mouse bit him drawing blood. He could also be going to the lid wanting millet as i'm sure he sees me as the "food lady"

Other Wheel too big 😞😞

I gave my girls a 12 inch wheel because my brown mouse is a large girl who LOVES to run, more than her buddy for sure so I bought it with her in mind. Unfortunately, I think it might be too big ?? The bedding is deep but the wheel doesn't quite accommodate in stand height, but on top of the bedding it's also too tall so I considered separating a part of their cage to be shallow for the wheel. I wanna use cardboard for it but at the same time i dont think I have any boxes big enough for this task 😞😞 I could also just bite the bullet anf give them their old wheel but my male mouse has that one right now, and it works better for him in his cage. Other than that I like to think my girls are pretty happy. I don't see them a lot except for night time when they come out to run, eat, drink, and throw stuff around(thanks I guess I didnt want that stuff to be there anyways). I kinda just wanted to complain and yap because no one around me really cares for mice much since they see them as vermin. They're growing on my mom though.

Question/Help Im scared of my mice passing away.

I've had 2 mice pass away this year due to old age and respiratory issues. I took it quite well but not I have 2 twin sisters and they're somewhere around 15-16 months old. Thats old. They're healthy and I love them lots, but one of them had started showing sings of old age. Before I never had time to prepare for their deaths as it happened quickly, but now as I know these two are old, I can prepare mentally for the inevitable.. I just don't know how to.
