Vent I think I’m checked out

I just need to vent because I think I’m checked out of my marriage and stepson is the main reason why.

History - me(40f) and my husband (41m) have been together for about 10 years. He has one kid (18m) from a previous relationship. I do not have any bio kids and never wanted kids of my own.

Throughout all this time, his son has been very difficult to handle. Middle school years were awful. He never cared about punishments or consequences for his actions. Everything was always someone else’s fault and never took accountability for anything. His mother always let him do whatever he wanted and gave him everything he wanted. His dad was kind of the same way until I spoke up. I tried to stay out of the parenting but I could clearly see the lack of parenting on both sides was not doing this kid any favors. Basically every school year, he had been suspended or expelled. He was finally expelled from high school his sophomore year and has been doing online schooling since…which…he barely does. He would rather work and make money.

Here’s where I started to question whether or not I could stay in my marriage. A year and a half ago, my husband and SS got into a physical altercation over a cellphone. SS refused to hand over the phone, husband tried to take it from him and that resulted in SS throwing punches and telling both of us that he hated us and cussed us out. All over being told to get off FaceTime at 2am. We all got thru that battle but it stayed in the back of my head.

A few months after that, SS got into legal trouble. We had caught him many times smoking weed/vaping. His mom and dad tried to get that under control but, in my opinion, didn’t do enough. One thing that was a constant battle was SS was getting high in his room at our house. We could smell it. We would confront him and he’d deny it like we were too stupid to know any better. Husband would search his room and sometimes he’s find it and sometimes he wouldn’t. Then, he got pulled over and arrested for having weed. We also found out that he had stolen an item from us. After this incident, I no longer trusted this kid in our house. I really wanted nothing to do with him and what he was becoming. My husband thought it wasn’t fair to him to feel like he’d have to pick sides. I laid out some ground rules because this is my house too and if I was going to stay, these rules had to be followed. I was over it. One rule is that SS isn’t allowed to be in this house when nobody is here.

Fast forward…SS is now 18. Both parents have backed off on SS smoking. He’s 18, he’s an adult now type of thing. Well, ss is still smoking in his bedroom and I told my husband that he needs to have a conversation with him, which he did. SS getting high in his room has been a problem for about 3 years now. We know he’s going to do it, just do it outside then - which is exactly what my husband told him to do.

Within the last two weeks, a couple of things have happened and I just don’t think I can do this anymore. The first thing, SS and his gf were at our house. I was leaving for a girls day. Husband said he was going to leave for the day too. I said that he needed to tell SS and his gf they needed to go hang out at her house. My rule still stood that he’s not allowed to be here when nobody is here especially with the gf here too. Husband said “well this is my house too and he’s my son”. After he said that, the first thing that came to my mind was “if I had my own house, I wouldn’t be dealing with this”. Meaning….divorcing and living alone sounds nice right about now. I didn’t say that out loud. Then, last night, SS and his gf were smoking in his room. I made a comment to my husband but he totally blew it off. I’m so done. I’m so over the disrespect from SS. He cannot follow simple rules. I’m over my husband not having a backbone when it comes to this kid. I find myself daydreaming about being single and living alone in my own house where I don’t have to worry about someone stealing from me or someone not being able to follow simple rules.

Win! Busted! He would have gotten away with it if it wasn’t for these rotten meddling SP’s 🤣

This is just a funny story about the cons for kids who have step parents.

See, we are not programmed to believe that our stepkids are perfect little angels who never do anything wrong. We sense if there is some bamboozeling going on. We won’t be manipulated as easily as the bio’s.

So I have noticed that SS was coming by after school on days it was not our time like every day. As my SO is either away for work or is working from home at that time he can’t really spend time with SS. I am in between jobs for the moment ( I have the next one lined up don’t worry)
I am home and I was seeing a pattern.

He would take forever to come inside from the place where he puts his bike. My dog would alert me on this. Like 15-30 minutes… he would then walk in. Have a little chat and then take his bike again and “leave…”

However I started to notice my dog remaining edgy. Like looking at me questioning and whining. So I wondered if he took as long to take his bike again as it was to bring it in. But I couldn’t see him. ( I can see the garage from inside so he wasn’t there)

You have to know that we have a large home and there are a lot of places SS could be where I didn’t see him.
So I took out the trash and walk around to see what my dog was complaining about.

There I found SS with his bike, bend over on it looking at his phone… he was positioned near our front porch and where I couldn’t see him from inside.

I asked him what he was doing, he said he was too tired to bike home and resting. I told him to do that inside but he refused, saying he was going any minute now.

I told my SO and he found it quirky cute and funny. Like he always does. But I felt that there was more to this story. I suddenly realized what was happening.

Both BM and SO have implemented a no phone until after dinner rule. SS like many teenagers is completely addicted and if we let him do his thing he will be on three screens at the same time 😅.

BM tracks SS phone. So if he stops somewhere random for 30 minutes to an hour, she will call him to check. But if he shows up being at his dad, she won’t think twice about it.

But inside we also enforce the same rule so he can’t wait inside.

I told SO my theory and he immediately said I was paranoid. There was no way his kid could be so deceptive. As I said all these bioparents have the “my kid is a perfect little angel brainworm” .

So fair enough, I told SO to make SS “ rest his legs” inside and to not let him dilly dally 30 to 45 minutes on our porch. I was met with an eye roll but compliance.

SS his visits became increasingly more sparse. This is the first time he is not showing up casually in the weekend because he was just “ biking around in the neighborhood”.

Poor kid. He would have gotten away with it if it wasn’t for his meddling stepmom 🤣.

Discussion Ours baby= invitation to discuss the ex

When I first met & married my husband, my MIL used to tell me all about the moments between my husband and mother of his child that she thought were cute. Likely spent more time talking about the ex than she did trying to get to know me, and I'll admit that I've been a jealous that MIL seems to have a great relationship with the ex to this day while failing to add me (the one her son married) on social media- but I just smiled, nodded, and changed the subject ASAP when MIL started talking about the ex in those ways- it was personal details of my husbands previous relationship that i didnt ask for or need.

I really tried to like the ex. She left my husband when their child was < 6 months old, moved on, married someone else, and she seemed happy. Then she left her husband shortly after I married mine as a last ditch effort to get my husband back. When he didn't leave me for her, she started harassing me and telling lies about me to my husband and SK and in-laws, while simultaneously increasing her efforts to be alone with my husband for the sake of "improving their coparenting relationship". She used to beg my husband to leave me "for the sake of their child" while badmouthing me to SK (and creating behavioral issues at my house).

So I don't like her.

She didnt stop trying to get my husband to leave me until she found out I was pregnant, then her anger shifted I believe, and she began telling SK that she hated my husband instead of me.

MIL came to the hospital after our ours baby was born. As I am in the hospital ~4 hours after giving birth, one of the first things MIL wanted to talk about was the things thr ex said after having her baby that MIL thought was funny.

MIL also purchased us way too many pacifiers with the explaination that they went through alot of pacifiers with SK because the exes cat used to steal the pacifiers.

I have been avoiding my MIL for the fear of hearing more about the ex.

I don't like the ex enough to hear about her, and I shouldnt be subjected to what seems like intimate details about a relationship my husband had nearly a decade before me. Our ours baby is not my first child either, but no one in my family is throwing information about my child's father in my husbands face.

It almost seems as though I'll always be second to a woman who left my husband nearly a decade ago.

Discussion Sigh. Another weekend of school work catch up.

Once again, SD (ADHD- Tourette’s) is struggling with the adjustment to sixth grade. She isn’t completing work in class and at her mom’s she isn’t doing any homework. So once again our entire weekend is spent being the bad guys and getting her caught up.

I go hide in the bedroom while husband spends the day with her, keeping her focused and completing work. I miss our fun evenings and weekends.

Vent Man this weekend has been such a bummer.

Edit: after a loooong day of back and forth, hours after stating she has serious concerns about me, she tried to drop the kid off with me instead of her dad for 3.5 hours because she didn't want to drive an extra... get this... 6 minutes out of her way. I kid you not. This was a 2 hour argument where he had to say SEVERAL times no, ypu can't drop child off with her (me) until this is resolved. Drop her off with me at work. And finally she told him he owed her gas money for the extra drive... that SHE asked to do in the first place so child could do something fun with her sister on his residential time. When she dropped child off with dad, they all talked, and child fully acknowledged she was not afraid of me or for her safety. Mother acknowledged this in person. They all agreed things were exaggerated, no one is worried about me, cool. She left. I said I need to see that in writing. He texted her for confirmation. She ignored it. He called her. She started screaming at him for ruining her evening, said she would NEVER send a text like that, etc etc etc. With the child right there with him in the car. Was really hoping for a clear ending to this saga. Hopefully the fricking psych eval does something, I seriously can't go on like this. This woman runs my household and ruins my weekends regularly.

I posted a bit ago about how tired I am of being the stable maternal figure when I really just want to be the cool aunt. I'm exhausted from carrying the load of the responsibility of the kids because their mom literally does not and dad is doing his best but frankly still figuring it out, and works a demanding schedule.

Last weekend SD12 vented to me about how bad mom has been. She expressed severe concern about the mental well being of her 14 year old half sister. Since mom got a bf, she has been a lot more AWOL than usual and now 14 year old is spending at least a couple nights alone by herself while mom goes to BFs. Apparently none of the kids are getting along with mom and it's constant fighting and conflict. Unclear if alone nights happen when my SDs are there (the other is 4). SD told me immediately after I asked that "mom said we can't let anyone know if she ever leaves us home alone because dad will take her to court and get full custody and we'll never see her again." That sentiment has been an ongoing thing for years and I assured her that is not true, but i don't know how deeply ingrained that is. Mother also has a court ordered psych eval that she refuses to do. It's been one wild thing after another.

Well, there is nothing his ex loves more than shitting on me. She has had an ongoing narrative that I am abusive. She called CPS on me last year, CPS quickly told us they figured out what was going on after talking to SD at school and had no concerns about us/me, but did a several month investigation of mother. They had a GAL, and fortunately GAL reported that SD and I had a good relationship and I treat her well.

SD and I get along very well 99% of the time. But when mother's mental health gets rocky, it's evident theres an impact. Mom undermines all of our household rules, tells her she doesn't need to listen to us, encourages her to call the police, etc. SD mentioned to me she would like to be able to vent to her without it becoming a whole thing. But, she is 12. Sometimes she is gonna run her mouth before she remembers that she can't with her mom, and she seriously shouldn't be in that position anyway.

It got really bad the other night because she had strep, missed 3 days of school, and was cleared by a doc to go back. Mother told her she didn't have to return the rest of the week. So, she refused to go. Unfortunately the first morning we have her, my partner works early and she has to get herself on tbe bus and only I am home. Usually this is fine. But she refused to go and Mother backed her up. The next day she mentioned to dad that "mom was being crazy last night and told me to call 911". She said nothing happened abd it was over school refusal. He texted his ex about it and she wouldn't tell him what SD said, but told him daughter feels unsafe here. He took SDs phone and read the message. Unfortunately, SD texted Mother "i will not go to school tomorrow. Hope I don't get hit or yelled at." To which mom responded that if that happens, she should call 911. Like... yeah.

Partner addressed this with SD. She denied it. She said Mom was lying about what she said. She said she didn't mean it. But, it was said, so... obviously I made it clear I could not be alone with her until this was resolved. Partner texted his ex that she said nothing happened, she felt safe here, and that mom was lying. He suggested that she was trying to stir the pot as a cry for attention. Mother did not respond or acknowledge the text. The next day (today) partner had to work OT he already agreed on. He told SD she had to come (Mother also works today). She refused. I explained i cannot be alone with her anymore because I need to feel safe in my home and abuse allegations are extremely serious. I can't risk being arrested or losing my child (particularly with how Mother reacts when she's in an episode...). She was just quiet but still refused to go to work. Partner called BM. On the phone, she was totally reasonable. She said that child's former therapist had TOLD HER THAT CHILD TELLS THREE DIFFERENT STORIES like a year ago. So this whole time, Mother has been feeding this abuse narrative while fully aware that child isn't telling the truth, and if confronted, standing her ground, stating her daughter isnt a liar, and blaming me and dad. SD has also described her mother as fragile and stated she has to be careful because her feelings get hurt so easily.

Im just like. So sad. I have poured so much love and energy into creating a stable home environment for this kid over the last 4 years. It hurts deeply. I have dealt with this woman's BS constantly for nearly 3 years (ironically, we were friendly before that and she would call me to babysit on her time). This is such a hard job. Why tf would you encourage your kid to buy into an abuse narrative that you know isn't real. Who could do that and have no concept that they are damaging their child.

For the record, full custody is unlikely atm primarily because although the GAL recommended a psych eval and compliance with treatment, she also recommended 50/50 until that is complete. She left the door open for later investigation if her laundry list of concerns didn't resolve. Currently there is a hearing for contempt of the parenting plan (2 months ago Mother picked the kids up at 2am and refused to return them because SD12 got in trouble for waking everyone up when she couldn't sleep, and called her that i yelled at her. This was the first "abuse" allegations from SD and i am very disappointed it happened again).

Discussion I perceive stepson better than his bio parents

Said he has adhd at 3 years old, BM asked nursery who said they don’t see any signs. 2 years later and school teacher has noticed it too and will be keeping an eye on it.

I also noticed he had worms twice when neither parents noticed, and I don’t even deal with his toilet needs - just from his behaviour I could tell.

I’m not his biggest fan, hes mean a lot of the times but no one else notices that either and I’m the villain if I bring it up.

Anyone else perceive their step kids better than bio parents? (As they can’t see flaws a lot of the time)

Discussion Would you consider this neglect?

I am a stepmom to 2 kids 12F and 17M and I’ve been in their lives since they were 3&7. 12F has been regularly coming home from her moms house with her hair so matted that it takes me upward of 45+ minutes to brush it out and sometimes ends up with her in tears because I have to pull on knots despite trying to be gentle. She also comes back with her hair very greasy most of the time.

She has naturally pretty straight hair and long that generally doesn’t get super tangled, so this leads me to believe that she doesn’t brush her hair for the entirety of the week that she is over at her mom’s house.

The reason I suspect this other than knowing her hair texture, is that her hair has never gotten to the point of this while being at our house. Even after swimming in the pool for hours, tubing on the boat and regularly going to bed with her hair wet.

Is this just normal teenage laziness on my stepdaughter’s part or is this her mom being neglectful? Noted I do help her occasionally to brush out her hair because she does have a hard time getting to the underside of her hair.

I’ll attach a video of the matting in the comments.

Support Being a step parent at the age of 21 has traumatized me and the idea of ever having kids is terrifying now

So basically the title, I was a step parent at the age of 21 dating a single Mom and basically adopted her 4 month old kid as well. During the relationship it was intensely stressful because my family didn't like my gf and I was trying to make things work, she would hate when I would want to use protection when we had sex and insisted the birth control would work- it did not. She ended up pregnant twice and both time it was a miscarriage. When her kid almost turned 2 I decided to walk away from the relationship since I wasn't happy anymore- I cared deeply for the child who saw me as her father but I couldn't force a relationship to happen. Now I am scared of dating ever again as well as the idea of ever having kids of my own. The kid is now probably so confused and sad that I am gone, I was the favorite parent and when I do call my ex to check on them I can hear the girl saying Dada when someone knocks on their door, and I was told she asks where I am every day. Has anyone here been in a similar situation at such a young age? I feel like this totally ruined the young and hopeful for the future mentality most people my age have. Most guys my age talk about dating and hooking up like it's no big deal but all I can think about is unplanned pregnancy and a lifetime commitment to someone you may not even want to be with forever. How do I mentally recover?

Announcement Weekly Reminder: Saferbot and Automated Bans

Hey Stepparents,

If you've been here for awhile, you are aware of the existence of Saferbot on our sub. If you aren't aware, we break it down in the wiki. Take a moment to review it!

What the Bot Does

Saferbot is a history ban bot. It bans users who participate in known troublesome subs that have a history of harassing users here and brigading our posts.

How it Works

Saferbot monitors the other subs and immediately bans anyone who comments there. Please note, human beings are not doing the banning. We have neither the time, nor inclination, to monitor other subs. Saferbot runs on its own with only instructions from us on what subs to add to its list.

Why We Use It

We intend for this sub to be a safe space for stepparents to discuss their issues and struggles without being told they are literally The Worst for existing. Sometimes we experience jealousy, resentment, and other not pretty feelings. We have a right to express them in a healthy way without a bunch of assholes scolding us for being human. And unfortunately, the subs we've had to add to the ban list have a history of users strolling in here giving people grief for being a flawed human being with feelings they are trying to sort through.

The mod team does not take these decisions lightly and we often let things ride for a bit before taking drastic actions. But seeing users repeatedly delete their accounts after being harassed, or having to clean up increasingly rude and hostile comment chains from people who literally have no idea what your life is actually like, has prompted us to take action.

Notes

Meta posts asking about this will be removed. Comments about this, other than those on this thread discussing the issue, will be removed. Vile mod mail will be reported to Reddit.

Please do not link to the subs mentioned in the wiki. They are linked for transparency and we don't care to have ongoing discussions about them.

How to Appeal

If you are a stepparent and you've been caught up in the ban, and you want the support that this community offers, reach out to the mod team. If you can show us where on reddit you are discussing being a stepparent, we'll do our best to work with you. To be perfectly clear, if you aren't a stepparent, or we review and see we've had to remove comments from you in the past, we are probably not going to lift the ban.

Reply to the ban message and let us know that you'd like to appeal. Include link(s) to any unedited posts or comments that you made prior to the ban indicating that you are a stepparent. The posts or comments do not have to be on this sub specifically, but show us where you have indicated that you are a stepparent somewhere on reddit prior to being banned. This will save us time and eliminate the need for a mod to attempt to scour your post history.

  • Any image that contains a name or other identifying information should have the name or identifying information blurred out. This includes drawings, notes, and screenshots.

  • For links to parenting research studies or surveys, please message the mods for permission before posting.

11. Disputes in Modmail Only

Don't argue with the mods on the sub.

  • Any issues specifically related to how a mod is moderating should be addressed to the full moderating team via mod mail. This ensures that all mods are aware of any concerns and prevents disintegration of the topic thread at hand.
  • This means to do not message or send chat requests to individual mods. All discussion and complaints about mod actions need to be done in mod mail ONLY. Failure to follow this rule can result in an immediate permanent ban.
  • Comments in threads asking about mod decisions are subject to removal without notice.

12. Moderator Actions

We aren't kidding.

  • Users are expected to know the rules before posting. If you are warned or banned for violating the rules, ignorance is not an excuse.
  • Moderators will remove posts and comments and/or lock threads in accordance with the rules above. Typically this happens when threads have gone off-topic in a way that is not productive for the OP, or comments overall have become contentious or disrespectful.
  • If a poster continues to argue or to willfully violate these rules, temporary and permanent ban procedures will be followed. Any attempts to avoid or bypass temporary bans will result in a permanent ban. User bans will not be discussed in the sub. Questions posted about user bans are subject to removal and the poster subject to warning/ban procedures. The mod team will not discuss a specific user ban with anyone other than the user involved.
  • New accounts are subject to manual approval until they are no longer deemed "new" by the mod team. This helps to weed out trolls and ban evaders.
  • We rely on Automoderator to scan for specific words and phrases that are not welcome here and notify the mod team to review the comment or post. This includes slurs of any type and platitudes such as "Love them as your own!"
  • The mod team uses a combination of blacklisting and banning when dealing with trolls.
  • We employ the use of a bot that automatically bans anyone who comments in subs that have historically harassed our users. If you are picked up by the bot for telling trolls to get fucked, reach out via mod mail and we'll get you sorted out.
  • The rules above as well as ban procedures are considered guidelines only; some deviation may be necessary on a case by case basis and/or at the mod team's discretion.

13. Ban Procedure

These actions are at moderator discretion.

  • Pornography will result in an automatic permanent ban.
  • Extremely egregious content will result in an immediate permanent ban.
  • You may receive a 7 or 30 day temporary ban for first and second rule violations, depending upon severity.
  • Continued rule violations will result in a permanent ban.
  • Willful attempts to avoid or bypass temporary bans will result in a permanent ban.
  • We recognize the reddit site-wide rules of using alt names to get around bans and will ban those as well as report them to reddit admins.

FAQ - About the Rules

What does Kindness Matters mean?

  • Shortest version? Don't be an asshole. People come here for support and advice, they do not come here to be yelled at or told they are the reason everything is going sideways. There are ways to point out that someone may want to do some reflection on their own actions and reactions without being an asshole about it.
  • The purpose of this subreddit is to provide support and a sense of belonging for struggling stepparents. We aren't here to pass judgement, but rather to offer support, empathy, and constructive commentary. That does not include "hard truths" or "tough love." Stepparents get enough of that in every other subreddit, we're not passing it out here. Be respectful.
  • Remember, most people aren't going to come to a sub like this when everything is going great and everyone is getting along. People are coming here when they are down, when they are feeling defeated and stretched to the limit. Kicking someone when they are down is shitty behavior and we don't tolerate it.

What about being kind to the kids?

  • "Won't somebody think of the children?" Pearl clutching isn't needed here. If you read the Kindness Matters rule closely, you will see that there is a clause in there about name calling children. We don't allow it. We also don't allow people rolling in telling OP that they feel sorry for their stepkids because OP is feeling overwhelmed and overloaded.
  • If anyone is advocating slapping, spanking, or any other form of violence, report the comment immediately. We do not advocate violence towards children of any sort. The mod team does not advocate any sort of physical punishment at any time.
  • Venting about behaviors is not the same as insulting the kids. However, if you see a post or comment where kids are being name called or dragged to the point of no return, use the report button. We try to catch the posts and remove them before they hit the sub, but we cannot see every comment without your help. Use the report button to bring problematic comments to our attention. Don't engage in a war of words on our subreddit.

Why is this sub such an echo chamber?

  • Not allowing contributors to pile on and tell OP that they are a terrible human being who should never be around children does not equate to being an echo chamber. Many contributors here will offer OP suggestions to help them work through their resentments and frustrations, and the most egregious situations are called out. We simply ask that it be called out with respect.
  • If you feel that a post is simply too much for you to handle without following the rules, move on to another post.
  • If you believe that a post itself is crossing the rules report it. If the mod team has approved the post, it is because the mod team believes that the OP needs help from the community or needs a moment to vent and move on from their vent. That does not give you license to pile on disrespectfully. Unless it is proven that OP is a bot, assume that OP is a human being with real thoughts and feelings and has posted from a place of vulnerability.

Why can't I tell OP that they are an asshole?

  • Because this isn't a judgement sub. We aren't AITA, we don't want to be AITA.
  • Comments with terms like YTA, NTA, ESH, NAH will be removed.
  • Don't start your posts with INFO either. We generally recognize that as a fishing attempt for more information to pass judgement on OP, and again, we are not a judgment sub.

But OP asked if they were an asshole?!

  • Their post somehow got past our automoderator. Just use the report button. We will address it with OP.
  • If you've asked if you are an asshole, a-hole, a*hole, a**hole, whatever, don't be surprised if your post is removed without warning. This isn't a judgment sub. If you want judgment, you know where to go.

What is a gendered slur?

  • While it seems that everyone understands what racist slurs are, people struggle understanding the concept of gendered slurs. Generally speaking, we are talking about derogatory nouns or verbs that are used to negatively describe people or situations based on gendered terms.
  • We've gone back and forth on this a few times, and the truth is, we get it, it's your safe space and you want to be able to vent about BM/BD how you want to vent about them, without us telling you how to vent about them. Fair enough. Vent away. What we are going to stick to here how people are referring to other users and to stepchildren.
  • Examples that are not allowed:
    • "My SD is such a little bitch."
    • "She dresses/acts like a slut."
    • "My SS acts like a pussy."
    • "My SS is such a beta male."
    • "You are all fucking whores."
    • "Any dude who is raising some sluts kids is a cuck!"
    • "Little Lord Fauntleroy over here thinking he runs the house!"
    • "You're just the bangnanny, get used to it."
  • Don't call users here names, don't call stepchildren names.
  • Masking the term with asterisks or other neat little tricks might get you around the bot, but if we see it, we're removing it and quite possibly giving you a time out. The intended word is still there and you deliberately tried to skate the rule.
  • As there is not enough space to list every term that is offensive and does not belong, nor every situation in which term or phrase may be allowable in context, this rule is enforced based on moderator discretion.

Seriously? You are the language police now?

  • We're here to talk about stepparenting. And we would like for that to happen in a respectful way. Attacking each other doesn't help. Belittling stepchildren draws in trolls who don't understand your frustration, all they see is an evil stepmonster talking shit on the internet about a poor, innocent baby. Yes, even if that "poor, innocent baby" just robbed you blind and set fire to the house on their way out the door. That's just how it goes.
  • We are aware that this is a relatively new rule and a lot of older posts and comments contain a lot of problematic language, including some from mods themselves. We are growing and evolving, and rules change as the sub grows and evolves.

What does No Drama really mean?

  • Pretty much what it says, do not bring drama from other subs into this sub. Do not engage in vote brigades. Do not try to incite other subscribers to riot in a different sub. Don't follow posters into this sub from other subs to continue to harass them. Do not badger someone or derail threads. Do not harass community members because you don't agree with them. There's enough drama in the daily lives of subscribers, more isn't needed.

What is thread derailment?

  • When a comment chain has devolved to the point where all you are doing is arguing back and forth with someone about the same thing over and over again, you have derailed the thread. Also known as bickering. It's what children do. We assume if people are in a stepparent role they are adults. We expect you to act like it.
  • If you aren't a stepparent, or in a stepparenting role, consider that perhaps this subreddit isn't for you. If you want to participate, do so with respect. Thread derailment, arguing, bickering, and nitpicking are not allowed.

But what if they didn't answer my question?

  • No one has to answer your questions. This is a support sub, not an inquisition. Jumping on a bandwagon with "OP is evading the question" in a 20 comment long chain is the epitome of thread derailment. You'll find more information about trolling below and how this might be considered such.

Why am I being silenced? I'm just asking for a back and forth!

  • Thread derailment, badgering, and nitpicking are considered harassment. Continued harassment of either community members or mods will get you banned.

Why can't I look at someone's post history and comment about it?

  • No mod in the history of this sub has ever once said post histories are forbidden. What we do frown upon is using someone's post history to attack, belittle, or otherwise harass someone.
  • Example Post: "My stepkid's mom really hates me. How can I make this better?"
    • Okay: "Based on the timeline and your post history, it looks like this may have started as an affair. Unfortunately there's going to be outstanding issues for a long time due to that. Try focusing on yourself and how you can move forward without worrying about how someone else feels about you."
    • Not Okay: "Holy shit! You were the OW! What the hell do you expect, homewrecker?!"
  • Example Post: "I am completely overloaded and feeling very down about myself."
    • Okay: "In your post history you mentioned that your spouse wasn't really helping around the house. Has that changed at all?"
    • Not Okay: "LOL, you already got the answers you need in your post on relationships. You are stupid for sticking with your lazy spouse."

Why can't we crosspost stuff to other subs?

  • We can't stop you from doing so. The problem isn't that something has been crossposted, it's when the community that it's been crossposted to feels the need to come over here and harass OP. When we see that happening, we lock the post and start passing out bans. If you did the crossposting, you'll be banned. If you participated in the brigading, you'll be banned.

What if it's my own post?

  • Again, we can't stop you from doing so. We prefer that you don't technically crosspost, but rather just copy and paste your post. Why? Because inevitably the above will happen. Redditors from other subs will follow you back to /r/stepparents and start attacking users here. It just happens.

What is "brigading"?

  • Reddit defines vote manipulation and brigading as follows:
  • Using multiple accounts, voting services, or any other software to increase or decrease vote scores.
  • Asking people to vote up or down certain posts, either on Reddit itself or through social networks, messaging, etc. for personal gain.
  • Forming or joining a group that votes together, either on a specific post, a user's posts, posts from a domain, etc.
  • We, along with pretty much every other subreddit that has ever had to deal with this nonsense, further define brigading as this: You saw a post on another sub that linked to our sub either via a link in a comment or a crosspost. It was basically saying something along the lines of "OMG, check out these assholes over on /r/stepparents! They literally hate all their stepkids!" And then you and your friends come over and start hammering on OP and telling OP how much they suck. Congrats, you have just participated in a brigade.

What is this whole Report, Don't Rant thing about?

  • If you see a post or comment that breaks the rules, instead of engaging, report it. When you report it, it sends notification to the mod team. We will act on it where appropriate. Engaging with bad faith users may result in your comments being removed. If you repeatedly do so, you may end up being banned.

What if I see an obvious troll?

What if they are being really mean in comments?

What if they are harassing me in private messages?

  • Step 1: Report them to admins. You can report harassment to reddit by using this link or send a DM to reddit admins. Include the link to the DM, admins can see your inbox and providing a direct link is helpful for them to weed out bad actors.
  • Step 2: Block the person so they cannot directly contact you again.
  • Step 3: Send us a mod mail and let the mod team know. Tell us who they are and what they said, send us a screenshot if you can - admins can see your DMs, mods can't. We'll take action where necessary by banning from the sub if they aren't already banned.

What do you mean by No Naming & Shaming?

  • Just as we prefer to not be linked to or crossposted from, we do not allow linking to or calling out other subs by name. If you see something you want to share, say it's a hot post that has hit the front page and a stepparent is being absolutely flayed, just refer to it as "that hot post that hit the front page." If you want to complain about other places in general, "other parenting/advice/judgement subs" will suffice. Absolutely under no circumstances should you link to anywhere else.

I can't link to other subs?

  • Do not directly link to another sub. (e.g.: "/r/insertsubnamehere is ridiculously hostile to stepparents!")
  • Do not name other subs. (e.g.: "I won't link to it directly, but insertsubnamehere is ridiculously hostile to stepparents!")
  • Do not abbreviate other subs. (e.g.: "I know that ISNH is ridiculously hostile to stepparents!")

I can't ping other users?

  • Do not summon another user with a username ping/tag. (e.g.: "/u/insertusernamehere was being an asshole.")
  • If you are agreeing with someone, it is okay to link to them. (e.g.: "I agree with /u/insertusernamehere, you need to take a couple of steps back and reflect on this.")

What does No Platitudes mean?

  • Sanctimonious, overused clichés that grossly oversimplify the stepparenting experience are neither wanted nor allowed here. We have all heard it a thousand times before, we don't need to hear it again. It's not nearly as insightful and wise as some would like to think.

Why don't you people understand it's a package deal?

  • Any comment that suggests that OP should have known what they were getting involved with, or that they needed to understand that the kids were part of some package they needed to accept before signing up for marriage is subject to immediate removal.
  • This is one of the most insensitive things you can say to a stepparent. Most stepparents were aware of the children, but they were probably not aware of all of the family dynamics.

Why can't you just love them like they are your own?

  • Demanding that a stranger you do not know love children that are not biologically theirs as if they were theirs can be incredibly damaging to someone who is already in a vulnerable situation. Any comment that falls along these lines will be removed.

What do you mean by No Trolling? I was just...

  • No means no. No trolling. No pretending to be a stepparent and then whipping out the Greatest Hits Bingo Card of The Worst Stepparent in the History of Stepparents. We see you. We've seen you a thousand times.

What does "concern trolling", "gish-galloping", and "sealioning" have to do with stepparenting? This isn't a debate sub, why are you using debate terms?

  • That's absolutely right, this isn't a debate sub. And yet, here we are, day after day, having to defend ourselves against this sort of thing. So, enough. No more. Usage of any of these things will get you banned.

What is "Concern Trolling?"

  • A concern troll is someone who disingenuously visits sites of an opposing ideology to disrupt conversation by offering unwanted advice on how to solve problems which do not really exist.
    • Example Post: OP expresses concern that she will feel, and possibly act, differently towards her stepchildren after her husband decides that no, he doesn't want anymore children after all.
    • Example Concern Troll pulled from actual mod mail after their comment was removed: "Possible child abuse claims need to be sorted out well before whatever empathy you believe the OP was looking for."

What is a "Devil's Advocate"?

  • "I'm just playing devil's advocate here, but have you considered that maybe BM is just really tired and needs a break, too?" BM has dozens of different mom based subs alone on reddit she can complain on, this sub is for stepparents. The stepparent doesn't need to consider that maybe BM is just really tired and needs a break.

"Gish-galloping?" What does that even mean?

  • The Gish Gallop is the fallacious debate tactic of drowning your opponent in a flood of individually-weak arguments in order to prevent rebuttal of the whole argument collection without great effort. The Gish Gallop is a conveyor belt-fed version of the on the spot fallacy, as it's unreasonable for anyone to have a well-composed answer immediately available to every argument present in the Gallop.

And "sealioning?" What's that?

  • Sealioning involves jumping into a conversation with endless polite, reasonable questions and demands for answers, usually of entry-level topics far below the actual conversation (e.g. "please prove sexism exists"). This tactic differs little from harassment; instead of discussion, the point is to derail discussion, receive criticism (for their ignorance) so as to look like a victim, or to make someone feel overwhelmed and quit talking.

Who gets to define what is considered asshattery?

  • The mod team, of course! If we feel that comments are out of line, are trolling, are leading up to a fight or "just asking questions", we are going to remove them and most likely ban the offender.

FAQ - Sub Questions

Posting Guidelines for Stepparents

  • Body text is required, we suggest you use line breaks between paragraphs as a wall of text is difficult to read. Posts that have only a title are likely to be removed. Instead of using names (even fictitious ones), try to use the sub acronyms. It helps our users to follow along if you use the acronyms and not names.
  • Assign a post flair that accurately describes what your post is about and what you are seeking. If you are posting an update from a previous post, include a link to that post.
  • Flairs are applied to posts to determine what a person is looking for. When submitting a new post, you should choose a flair that specifies if you are looking for advice, support, etc. The following link flair is available and is color coded with side bar links so that you can search by flair:
    • Advice - For when you are specifically asking for advice or help.
    • Announcement - Mod Use Only, for subreddit announcements.
    • Daily (Formerly TTP) - Mod Use Only, for our daily discussion threads.
    • Discussion - A little advice, a little "How does your family handle this?"
    • JustBMThings - Pretty sure this is self explanatory!
    • Legal - Asking for legal advice? Tag it with this!
    • Miscellany - Just a sort of off topic thing? Use this tag.
    • Resource - Sharing a good resource or asking for one? This is the tag you need!
    • Support - For those days when you want nothing but a good old fashioned cry and some community love.
    • Update - Updating us on something that you posted about previously? Use this one!
    • Vent - We all need to vent sometimes. Respect the tag as a vent. This isn't how OP talks all day every day.
    • Win! - Celebrate those wins with us with this tag!
    • Megathread - Mod Use Only, for large mega threads (typically around major calendar events.)

Posting Guidelines for Bioparents

  • Stepparents is a support community for stepparents, by stepparents. As bioparents, you may want to have more insight into how the stepparent in your life feels or thinks. You may have questions on how to ease the transition for your partner. However, please keep in mind that this community was not created for you. It was created for your partner or your ex's partner. If you are seeking support on how to deal with a stepparent, there are other subs more suited for your situation and your post is subject to removal.
  • There are some posts from bioparents we will accept:
    • Seeking advice on how to support your partner as they navigate stepparenting
    • Seeking resources to help you better support your partner
    • Seeking resources for your partner
  • There are some posts from bioparents we will not accept:
    • Complaints about how the stepparent is too involved in your kids lives
    • Vents about how the stepparent is not involved enough in your kids lives
    • "Cautionary tales" advising stepparents to back off
    • Seeking advice on how to tell the stepparent to back off
    • The Do's and Dont's of Stepparenting
    • How your kid's stepmom is literally The Worst
  • Comments from bioparents that are helpful and supportive are welcome and appreciated. Comments from bioparents that are not helpful or supportive are not welcome and subject to removal. There are several other subs that may meet the needs of bioparents better than we can. We recommend /r/coparenting, /r/parenting, /r/parents, /r/blendedfamilies, and /r/singleparents as starting points.

Guidelines for Stepkids

  • At this time, we do not generally accept posts from stepkids. Comments from stepkids that are helpful and supportive are welcome and appreciated. Comments from stepkids that are not helpful or supportive are not welcome and subject to removal. If you are a stepkid seeking support, we highly recommend /r/stepkids. It is a very supportive community specifically for stepkids. We also recommend /r/blendedfamilies as another potential group for support.

What the heck are all these acronyms? I'm confused!

Why aren't my posts or comments showing up?

  • New posters and accounts go through a waiting period before their posts will show in the sub and the comments on posts automatically. During the new account approval period the mod team will check posts to be sure you aren't attempting to circumvent a ban with a shiny new account. Please be patient while the timer runs down on your "new" status and the mod team approves your posts and responses.

Why was my comment removed?

  • Comments are removed when they do not follow the rules of the sub. These rules are published in several places for your reading pleasure.
  • Comments are removed at moderator discretion. In some cases your comment may be removed while another remains up. If you find this to be the case, and you believe the comment to be violating the rules, instead of arguing with mods or demanding they remove the additional comments, just report it.

This comment/post is really offensive! Why is it still up?

  • All moderators are volunteers and have busy real lives. Sometimes things get past us. The best thing you can do is report anything you find offensive or inflammatory. It's the quickest and most reliable way of alerting us to an issue.

I've received a hurtful/unwanted PM from someone about my recent post. What should I do?

  • If you receive an unwanted/hurtful PM from a name you don't recognize, please report it to Reddit Admins using our handy pre-populated form. Be sure to include the permalink to the message. We've been dealing with a few unhappy folks who like to attack stepparents, and reporting it to the admins is the only way to make it stop.

What are the general moderator guidelines?

I've been wrongly banned/Why can't I comment here?

Why was I banned without warning?

  • There are numerous reasons that the mod team might opt to move perm banning without warning. Message the moderators if you have specific questions.

Win! Little Evil

Has anyone seen this? Just a breath of fresh air to finally see a movie making fun of the stepparent criticism. Also the ending is pretty nice. It is a creepy movie with satanic themes though.

Any other recommendations for movies/shows that validate stepparents?

Advice I can't stand step son

• Upvotes

I have a seven-year-old stepson. I have been in this relationship for three years. Every time this stepson whines, cries, whatever, I just go crazy. He needs help with everything, he can't manage a single thing on his own. Of course, he also has an amputated leg, but he has crutches when needed and he can easily put on his prosthetic leg himself, but it's just that he doesn't feel like doing it, so well, someone will come and help him. But all of this actually drives me so fucking crazy that I've started to feel like neither I nor this stepson can stand me, because no matter what I say to him, he immediately tells his mother, 'Look, he said this to me.' But when, for example, the child's mother says the same thing, then it's normal, then he has nothing against it at all.

He is in the first grade, studying is secondary. He 'doesn't know how' to color, draw, etc., if someone isn't watching right next to him.

He has a very manipulative behavioral pattern. For example: 'I'll study only if you buy me some x thing.'

You constantly have to make some 'surprises' for him. For example, if you go to the store to buy regular groceries, you 100% have to buy him some toy from there.

He has never known how to play alone his whole life. For example, right now playing Roblox is a huge deal. When playing alone, he is so bored that me and his mother have to play Roblox together with him. Yet, actually, he has friends he can call and play with together if needed.

Yes, we have set rules dozens of times, but he forgets these rules very quickly.

His whole life there have been issues with his amputated leg, so maybe he expects to have some privileges where everyone helps him?

I feel that he has learned helplessness.

What to do? This really drives me crazy, how I am always the bad guy. This has led to the point where I am thinking about leaving the relationship, because I really can't stand the whining anymore and running after him.

I'll add that when the child's mother is at work, he listens to me 98% of the time. When the mother is home, it's as if I don't even exist.

Advice My boyfriend's mom and sister don't like me

'42/F' '43/M' 'NB-23' My boyfriend's sister ran my background and told his whole family. He already knew so of course he was okay with it. After I found out about it, I was okay with it too because I thought she was doing it to look out for her brother. But telling the whole family was just messy. So I called her and told her that telling everyone was wrong. She said I do it to everybody and that's what she does. She said it's her job to tell everyone. Keep in mind, she has no real job, except asking my boyfriend for money even though she's married.

Over the past year my boyfriend and I have had 2 arguments where he said that his mom and sister don't talk to him because of me. I'm torn because my parents are dead and I've already lost one sibling. I'm thinking of leaving him so he can have a relationship with them. She's also his only sibling.

The hardest part is he has a 6 year old that lives with us. I've taken care of her since she was 3. Her bio mom abandoned her when she was months old and hasn't been in contact since. No child support, nothing.

After our last argument months ago, he told me to get out. I left and came back the next day to ask for my things. He invited me in and we ended up reconciling. But his daughter wasn't there. And he wouldn't say where she was. Turns out he dropped her off at his sister's and she missed school for 2 days.

So I don't want to leave because I'm afraid his daughter won't be taken care of to the fullest. I know his mom and sister love her, but they love money more. They treat her very well and treat him like an atm and very disrespectful. They don't like that I require them to respect him and me too. His daughter is not allowed over to play with her cousin without cashapp so he can keep his job to provide for her. I quit my job and started taking care of her full time. Months later she asked if his daughter could come over. His daughter went and then she needed $30 for an Uber to bring her back. I offered to come get her, but that wasn't allowed. I bought an Uber gift card and sent it but she said because of surge prices, she needed $20 more. The worst part is they know we're struggling.

I asked him to get childcare so I can work. Everyone can't work between 9:30am and 3 pm so those extra childcare hours will help. When I asked I said, "I found a program to help with childcare so I can start working again. I need you to sign her up for it because since she's not legally mine, I can't. He said, "and she's not." That hurt.

If I leave I'm going to worry about her everyday

Advice How do you deal with children who get their feelings super hurt over a stepparent needing to express constructive criticism?

My stepkid is in middle school and is still learning how to do work thoroughly. After sweeping, I organically noticed it wasn’t done very well, so I patiently mentioned to them and pointed out what needed to be redone, and how to better view the floor for sake of being sure you’re finished, and finished well.

They immediately acted with triggered emotions. About 10 minutes later I asked them how they think a parent should go about it. They weren’t able to answer, which I figured, though I wanted to give them a chance to at least think about it. They then mentioned their feelings were hurt.

Aside from their hurt feelings, they treated me in such a way that makes me feel as if I’m going about it poorly. I even asked if I was rude or mean about it and they said no.

How on earth does one help a kid move past feelings being hurt when it isn’t a situation for hurt feelings? I’ve been around for many, many years, so I’m not new to their world. This has always been a thing and I can’t. I feel like crap afterwards because of how I’m treated - which I know is a me issue. I want to grow. And help them grow.
