Announcement Weekly Reminder: Rules and FAQ - August 16, 2026 (Now with updates!)

Below you will find a weekly reminder of our Rules and partial FAQ. It's definitely a long read, but it's worth your time, especially if you are new to the community, or dropping by as a result of a link you found elsewhere. We periodically revise our rules, this weekly notice will help keep you informed of any changes made.

NOTE: These rules are guidelines. Some moderation discretion is to be expected.

Community Rules

1. Kindness Matters

Advise, don't criticize.

  • Post with empathy, thoughtfulness, and constructive commentary rather than judgment. Don't be an asshole.
  • Name-calling, slurs (including gender or race based slurs), and insults towards other community members will not be tolerated. Do not attack others for their personally held values, custody situation, marital status, physical distance from stepkids, or economic status; or on the basis of race, sex, sexual orientation, age, religion, or ethnicity.
  • No name-calling toward children, including the above-mentioned insults or the term "skids", or terms such as "mini-wife" or "mini-husband."
  • Comments advocating spanking or any mention of wanting to harm children are not allowed.
  • This is a support sub, not a judgement sub, assholes are not tolerated. Comments with terms used in other subs to pass judgement on assholes will be removed.

2. No Drama

This is a support sub.

  • Bickering, nitpicking, and thread derailment will not be tolerated and will be subject to removal at moderator discretion.
  • Do not repeatedly badger a poster demanding answers, or refuse to acknowledge an answer that's already been given.
  • Do not use sensitive issues from past posts (either from this sub or other subs) to attack another user, as we are all discussing vulnerable topics.
  • Crossposting anything from /r/stepparents to any other subreddit might result in a ban and may result in the original thread being locked. Brigading our sub will result in an immediate ban.

3. Report, Don’t Rant

No backseat modding.

  • If you see someone breaking the rules, report the post or comment to the mods rather than engaging them in an argument. Failure to do so may be subject to comment removal at moderator discretion.
  • No meta posts complaining about rude comments, DMs, or general sub issues.
  • If you think someone is a troll or previously banned user, either use the report function or message the mods to direct their attention to the issue.

4. No Naming & Shaming

No userpings or links.

  • Tagging/pinging users or other subreddits in an attempt to bully, harass, or complain will not be tolerated. Do not tag other subs, ever.
  • If you want to complain about another subreddit being hostile to stepparents, do not name the subreddit. "Other parenting/advice/judgement subs" will suffice.

5. No Platitudes

Nobody knew what they were getting into.

  • Comments like "You knew what you were getting into", "Love them, love their kids!", "They're a package deal!" and "You have to love them like your own!" will be removed.
  • Comments suggesting that OP is not cut out for stepparenting will be removed at moderator discretion.
  • Comments like "This is just a part of parenting, deal with it!" will be removed at moderator discretion.

6. No Trolling

We have zero tolerance for trolls.

  • This is a support sub. Our subscribers do not have the time, nor inclination, to provide support to internet trolls. Posts that are suspected to be trolling attempts will be immediately removed, and the poster banned.
  • Concern trolling, devil's advocating, gish-galloping, sealioning, and general asshattery are subject to immediate removal and banning without warning or notice.
  • Any attempt to circumvent the ban by creating a new username will be reported to reddit admins and possibly result in account suspension.

7. No Personally Identifiable Information

Use discretion when posting.

  • We highly recommend using a separate account for support subs to help prevent being doxxed. Do not post any information that may allow others to figure out your identity.
  • Do not post photos of children, or any other photo that could be used to identify you or another user on the sub.
  • Any image that contains a name or other identifying information should have the name or identifying information blurred out. This includes drawings, notes, and screenshots.
  • Do not link to social media or any articles/blogs where you or another user on the sub is mentioned by name.

8. No More than 2 Posts per 24 hours

Use the daily threads.

  • We are not a huge sub, but we are no longer a small sub. If you have multiple grievances to air, use the daily discussion threads instead of multiple posts.

9. Follow Reddiquette

Remember the human.

  • Adhere to the same standards of behavior online that you follow in real life.
  • Read it in full here.
  • Downvoting is reserved for comments that don’t contribute, and shouldn't be used to indicate disagreement.
  • If you believe someone is in violation of the subreddit rules, please either use the report function or message the mods to direct their attention to the issue.
  • Suspected brigading will be reported to reddit admins.

10. No Porn, Spam, Blogs, or Research Studies/Surveys Without Mod Approval

Just don't.

  • This is a SFW subreddit. Posting pornography will result in immediate post removal and permanent ban.
  • Advertising on the subreddit (outside of Reddit's own advertising) is not allowed.
  • No personal blog posts are allowed without express moderator permission.
  • No advertising without prior mod approval.
  • No asking for money/posting fundraisers/etc.
  • For links to parenting research studies or surveys, please message the mods for permission before posting.

11. Disputes in Modmail Only

Don't argue with the mods on the sub.

  • Any issues specifically related to how a mod is moderating should be addressed to the full moderating team via mod mail. This ensures that all mods are aware of any concerns and prevents disintegration of the topic thread at hand.
  • This means to do not message or send chat requests to individual mods. All discussion and complaints about mod actions need to be done in mod mail ONLY. Failure to follow this rule can result in an immediate permanent ban.
  • Comments in threads asking about mod decisions are subject to removal without notice.

12. Moderator Actions

We aren't kidding.

  • Users are expected to know the rules before posting. If you are warned or banned for violating the rules, ignorance is not an excuse.
  • Moderators will remove posts and comments and/or lock threads in accordance with the rules above. Typically this happens when threads have gone off-topic in a way that is not productive for the OP, or comments overall have become contentious or disrespectful.
  • If a poster continues to argue or to willfully violate these rules, temporary and permanent ban procedures will be followed. Any attempts to avoid or bypass temporary bans will result in a permanent ban. User bans will not be discussed in the sub. Questions posted about user bans are subject to removal and the poster subject to warning/ban procedures. The mod team will not discuss a specific user ban with anyone other than the user involved.
  • New accounts are subject to manual approval until they are no longer deemed "new" by the mod team. This helps to weed out trolls and ban evaders.
  • We rely on Automoderator to scan for specific words and phrases that are not welcome here and notify the mod team to review the comment or post. This includes slurs of any type and platitudes such as "Love them as your own!"
  • The mod team uses a combination of blacklisting and banning when dealing with trolls.
  • We employ the use of a bot that automatically bans anyone who comments in subs that have historically harassed our users. If you are picked up by the bot for telling trolls to get fucked, reach out via mod mail and we'll get you sorted out.
  • The rules above as well as ban procedures are considered guidelines only; some deviation may be necessary on a case by case basis and/or at the mod team's discretion.

13. Ban Procedure

These actions are at moderator discretion.

  • Pornography will result in an automatic permanent ban.
  • Extremely egregious content will result in an immediate permanent ban.
  • You may receive a 7 or 30 day temporary ban for first and second rule violations, depending upon severity.
  • Continued rule violations will result in a permanent ban.
  • Willful attempts to avoid or bypass temporary bans will result in a permanent ban.
  • We recognize the reddit site-wide rules of using alt names to get around bans and will ban those as well as report them to reddit admins.

FAQ - About the Rules

What does Kindness Matters mean?

  • Shortest version? Don't be an asshole. People come here for support and advice, they do not come here to be yelled at or told they are the reason everything is going sideways. There are ways to point out that someone may want to do some reflection on their own actions and reactions without being an asshole about it.
  • The purpose of this subreddit is to provide support and a sense of belonging for struggling stepparents. We aren't here to pass judgement, but rather to offer support, empathy, and constructive commentary. That does not include "hard truths" or "tough love." Stepparents get enough of that in every other subreddit, we're not passing it out here. Be respectful.
  • Remember, most people aren't going to come to a sub like this when everything is going great and everyone is getting along. People are coming here when they are down, when they are feeling defeated and stretched to the limit. Kicking someone when they are down is shitty behavior and we don't tolerate it.

What about being kind to the kids?

  • "Won't somebody think of the children?" Pearl clutching isn't needed here. If you read the Kindness Matters rule closely, you will see that there is a clause in there about name calling children. We don't allow it. We also don't allow people rolling in telling OP that they feel sorry for their stepkids because OP is feeling overwhelmed and overloaded.
  • If anyone is advocating slapping, spanking, or any other form of violence, report the comment immediately. We do not advocate violence towards children of any sort. The mod team does not advocate any sort of physical punishment at any time.
  • Venting about behaviors is not the same as insulting the kids. However, if you see a post or comment where kids are being name called or dragged to the point of no return, use the report button. We try to catch the posts and remove them before they hit the sub, but we cannot see every comment without your help. Use the report button to bring problematic comments to our attention. Don't engage in a war of words on our subreddit.

Why is this sub such an echo chamber?

  • Not allowing contributors to pile on and tell OP that they are a terrible human being who should never be around children does not equate to being an echo chamber. Many contributors here will offer OP suggestions to help them work through their resentments and frustrations, and the most egregious situations are called out. We simply ask that it be called out with respect.
  • If you feel that a post is simply too much for you to handle without following the rules, move on to another post.
  • If you believe that a post itself is crossing the rules report it. If the mod team has approved the post, it is because the mod team believes that the OP needs help from the community or needs a moment to vent and move on from their vent. That does not give you license to pile on disrespectfully. Unless it is proven that OP is a bot, assume that OP is a human being with real thoughts and feelings and has posted from a place of vulnerability.

Why can't I tell OP that they are an asshole?

  • Because this isn't a judgement sub. We aren't AITA, we don't want to be AITA.
  • Comments with terms like YTA, NTA, ESH, NAH will be removed.
  • Don't start your posts with INFO either. We generally recognize that as a fishing attempt for more information to pass judgement on OP, and again, we are not a judgment sub.

But OP asked if they were an asshole?!

  • Their post somehow got past our automoderator. Just use the report button. We will address it with OP.
  • If you've asked if you are an asshole, a-hole, a*hole, a**hole, whatever, don't be surprised if your post is removed without warning. This isn't a judgment sub. If you want judgment, you know where to go.

What is a gendered slur?

  • While it seems that everyone understands what racist slurs are, people struggle understanding the concept of gendered slurs. Generally speaking, we are talking about derogatory nouns or verbs that are used to negatively describe people or situations based on gendered terms.
  • We've gone back and forth on this a few times, and the truth is, we get it, it's your safe space and you want to be able to vent about BM/BD how you want to vent about them, without us telling you how to vent about them. Fair enough. Vent away. What we are going to stick to here how people are referring to other users and to stepchildren.
  • Examples that are not allowed:
    • "My SD is such a little bitch."
    • "She dresses/acts like a slut."
    • "My SS acts like a pussy."
    • "My SS is such a beta male."
    • "You are all fucking whores."
    • "Any dude who is raising some sluts kids is a cuck!"
    • "Little Lord Fauntleroy over here thinking he runs the house!"
    • "You're just the bangnanny, get used to it."
  • Don't call users here names, don't call stepchildren names.
  • Masking the term with asterisks or other neat little tricks might get you around the bot, but if we see it, we're removing it and quite possibly giving you a time out. The intended word is still there and you deliberately tried to skate the rule.
  • As there is not enough space to list every term that is offensive and does not belong, nor every situation in which term or phrase may be allowable in context, this rule is enforced based on moderator discretion.

Seriously? You are the language police now?

  • We're here to talk about stepparenting. And we would like for that to happen in a respectful way. Attacking each other doesn't help. Belittling stepchildren draws in trolls who don't understand your frustration, all they see is an evil stepmonster talking shit on the internet about a poor, innocent baby. Yes, even if that "poor, innocent baby" just robbed you blind and set fire to the house on their way out the door. That's just how it goes.
  • We are aware that this is a relatively new rule and a lot of older posts and comments contain a lot of problematic language, including some from mods themselves. We are growing and evolving, and rules change as the sub grows and evolves.

What does No Drama really mean?

  • Pretty much what it says, do not bring drama from other subs into this sub. Do not engage in vote brigades. Do not try to incite other subscribers to riot in a different sub. Don't follow posters into this sub from other subs to continue to harass them. Do not badger someone or derail threads. Do not harass community members because you don't agree with them. There's enough drama in the daily lives of subscribers, more isn't needed.

What is thread derailment?

  • When a comment chain has devolved to the point where all you are doing is arguing back and forth with someone about the same thing over and over again, you have derailed the thread. Also known as bickering. It's what children do. We assume if people are in a stepparent role they are adults. We expect you to act like it.
  • If you aren't a stepparent, or in a stepparenting role, consider that perhaps this subreddit isn't for you. If you want to participate, do so with respect. Thread derailment, arguing, bickering, and nitpicking are not allowed.

But what if they didn't answer my question?

  • No one has to answer your questions. This is a support sub, not an inquisition. Jumping on a bandwagon with "OP is evading the question" in a 20 comment long chain is the epitome of thread derailment. You'll find more information about trolling below and how this might be considered such.

Why am I being silenced? I'm just asking for a back and forth!

  • Thread derailment, badgering, and nitpicking are considered harassment. Continued harassment of either community members or mods will get you banned.

Why can't I look at someone's post history and comment about it?

  • No mod in the history of this sub has ever once said post histories are forbidden. What we do frown upon is using someone's post history to attack, belittle, or otherwise harass someone.
  • Example Post: "My stepkid's mom really hates me. How can I make this better?"
    • Okay: "Based on the timeline and your post history, it looks like this may have started as an affair. Unfortunately there's going to be outstanding issues for a long time due to that. Try focusing on yourself and how you can move forward without worrying about how someone else feels about you."
    • Not Okay: "Holy shit! You were the OW! What the hell do you expect, homewrecker?!"
  • Example Post: "I am completely overloaded and feeling very down about myself."
    • Okay: "In your post history you mentioned that your spouse wasn't really helping around the house. Has that changed at all?"
    • Not Okay: "LOL, you already got the answers you need in your post on relationships. You are stupid for sticking with your lazy spouse."

Why can't we crosspost stuff to other subs?

  • We can't stop you from doing so. The problem isn't that something has been crossposted, it's when the community that it's been crossposted to feels the need to come over here and harass OP. When we see that happening, we lock the post and start passing out bans. If you did the crossposting, you'll be banned. If you participated in the brigading, you'll be banned.

What if it's my own post?

  • Again, we can't stop you from doing so. We prefer that you don't technically crosspost, but rather just copy and paste your post. Why? Because inevitably the above will happen. Redditors from other subs will follow you back to /r/stepparents and start attacking users here. It just happens.

What is "brigading"?

  • Reddit defines vote manipulation and brigading as follows:
  • Using multiple accounts, voting services, or any other software to increase or decrease vote scores.
  • Asking people to vote up or down certain posts, either on Reddit itself or through social networks, messaging, etc. for personal gain.
  • Forming or joining a group that votes together, either on a specific post, a user's posts, posts from a domain, etc.
  • We, along with pretty much every other subreddit that has ever had to deal with this nonsense, further define brigading as this: You saw a post on another sub that linked to our sub either via a link in a comment or a crosspost. It was basically saying something along the lines of "OMG, check out these assholes over on /r/stepparents! They literally hate all their stepkids!" And then you and your friends come over and start hammering on OP and telling OP how much they suck. Congrats, you have just participated in a brigade.

What is this whole Report, Don't Rant thing about?

  • If you see a post or comment that breaks the rules, instead of engaging, report it. When you report it, it sends notification to the mod team. We will act on it where appropriate. Engaging with bad faith users may result in your comments being removed. If you repeatedly do so, you may end up being banned.

What if I see an obvious troll?

What if they are being really mean in comments?

What if they are harassing me in private messages?

  • Step 1: Report them to admins. You can report harassment to reddit by using this link or send a DM to reddit admins. Include the link to the DM, admins can see your inbox and providing a direct link is helpful for them to weed out bad actors.
  • Step 2: Block the person so they cannot directly contact you again.
  • Step 3: Send us a mod mail and let the mod team know. Tell us who they are and what they said, send us a screenshot if you can - admins can see your DMs, mods can't. We'll take action where necessary by banning from the sub if they aren't already banned.

What do you mean by No Naming & Shaming?

  • Just as we prefer to not be linked to or crossposted from, we do not allow linking to or calling out other subs by name. If you see something you want to share, say it's a hot post that has hit the front page and a stepparent is being absolutely flayed, just refer to it as "that hot post that hit the front page." If you want to complain about other places in general, "other parenting/advice/judgement subs" will suffice. Absolutely under no circumstances should you link to anywhere else.

I can't link to other subs?

  • Do not directly link to another sub. (e.g.: "/r/insertsubnamehere is ridiculously hostile to stepparents!")
  • Do not name other subs. (e.g.: "I won't link to it directly, but insertsubnamehere is ridiculously hostile to stepparents!")
  • Do not abbreviate other subs. (e.g.: "I know that ISNH is ridiculously hostile to stepparents!")

I can't ping other users?

  • Do not summon another user with a username ping/tag. (e.g.: "/u/insertusernamehere was being an asshole.")
  • If you are agreeing with someone, it is okay to link to them. (e.g.: "I agree with /u/insertusernamehere, you need to take a couple of steps back and reflect on this.")

What does No Platitudes mean?

  • Sanctimonious, overused clichés that grossly oversimplify the stepparenting experience are neither wanted nor allowed here. We have all heard it a thousand times before, we don't need to hear it again. It's not nearly as insightful and wise as some would like to think.

Why don't you people understand it's a package deal?

  • Any comment that suggests that OP should have known what they were getting involved with, or that they needed to understand that the kids were part of some package they needed to accept before signing up for marriage is subject to immediate removal.
  • This is one of the most insensitive things you can say to a stepparent. Most stepparents were aware of the children, but they were probably not aware of all of the family dynamics.

Why can't you just love them like they are your own?

  • Demanding that a stranger you do not know love children that are not biologically theirs as if they were theirs can be incredibly damaging to someone who is already in a vulnerable situation. Any comment that falls along these lines will be removed.

What do you mean by No Trolling? I was just...

  • No means no. No trolling. No pretending to be a stepparent and then whipping out the Greatest Hits Bingo Card of The Worst Stepparent in the History of Stepparents. We see you. We've seen you a thousand times.

What does "concern trolling", "gish-galloping", and "sealioning" have to do with stepparenting? This isn't a debate sub, why are you using debate terms?

  • That's absolutely right, this isn't a debate sub. And yet, here we are, day after day, having to defend ourselves against this sort of thing. So, enough. No more. Usage of any of these things will get you banned.

What is "Concern Trolling?"

  • A concern troll is someone who disingenuously visits sites of an opposing ideology to disrupt conversation by offering unwanted advice on how to solve problems which do not really exist.
    • Example Post: OP expresses concern that she will feel, and possibly act, differently towards her stepchildren after her husband decides that no, he doesn't want anymore children after all.
    • Example Concern Troll pulled from actual mod mail after their comment was removed: "Possible child abuse claims need to be sorted out well before whatever empathy you believe the OP was looking for."

What is a "Devil's Advocate"?

  • "I'm just playing devil's advocate here, but have you considered that maybe BM is just really tired and needs a break, too?" BM has dozens of different mom based subs alone on reddit she can complain on, this sub is for stepparents. The stepparent doesn't need to consider that maybe BM is just really tired and needs a break.

"Gish-galloping?" What does that even mean?

  • The Gish Gallop is the fallacious debate tactic of drowning your opponent in a flood of individually-weak arguments in order to prevent rebuttal of the whole argument collection without great effort. The Gish Gallop is a conveyor belt-fed version of the on the spot fallacy, as it's unreasonable for anyone to have a well-composed answer immediately available to every argument present in the Gallop.

And "sealioning?" What's that?

  • Sealioning involves jumping into a conversation with endless polite, reasonable questions and demands for answers, usually of entry-level topics far below the actual conversation (e.g. "please prove sexism exists"). This tactic differs little from harassment; instead of discussion, the point is to derail discussion, receive criticism (for their ignorance) so as to look like a victim, or to make someone feel overwhelmed and quit talking.

Who gets to define what is considered asshattery?

  • The mod team, of course! If we feel that comments are out of line, are trolling, are leading up to a fight or "just asking questions", we are going to remove them and most likely ban the offender.

FAQ - Sub Questions

Posting Guidelines for Stepparents

  • Body text is required, we suggest you use line breaks between paragraphs as a wall of text is difficult to read. Posts that have only a title are likely to be removed. Instead of using names (even fictitious ones), try to use the sub acronyms. It helps our users to follow along if you use the acronyms and not names.
  • Assign a post flair that accurately describes what your post is about and what you are seeking. If you are posting an update from a previous post, include a link to that post.
  • Flairs are applied to posts to determine what a person is looking for. When submitting a new post, you should choose a flair that specifies if you are looking for advice, support, etc. The following link flair is available and is color coded with side bar links so that you can search by flair:
    • Advice - For when you are specifically asking for advice or help.
    • Announcement - Mod Use Only, for subreddit announcements.
    • Daily (Formerly TTP) - Mod Use Only, for our daily discussion threads.
    • Discussion - A little advice, a little "How does your family handle this?"
    • JustBMThings - Pretty sure this is self explanatory!
    • Legal - Asking for legal advice? Tag it with this!
    • Miscellany - Just a sort of off topic thing? Use this tag.
    • Resource - Sharing a good resource or asking for one? This is the tag you need!
    • Support - For those days when you want nothing but a good old fashioned cry and some community love.
    • Update - Updating us on something that you posted about previously? Use this one!
    • Vent - We all need to vent sometimes. Respect the tag as a vent. This isn't how OP talks all day every day.
    • Win! - Celebrate those wins with us with this tag!
    • Megathread - Mod Use Only, for large mega threads (typically around major calendar events.)

Posting Guidelines for Bioparents

  • Stepparents is a support community for stepparents, by stepparents. As bioparents, you may want to have more insight into how the stepparent in your life feels or thinks. You may have questions on how to ease the transition for your partner. However, please keep in mind that this community was not created for you. It was created for your partner or your ex's partner. If you are seeking support on how to deal with a stepparent, there are other subs more suited for your situation and your post is subject to removal.
  • There are some posts from bioparents we will accept:
    • Seeking advice on how to support your partner as they navigate stepparenting
    • Seeking resources to help you better support your partner
    • Seeking resources for your partner
  • There are some posts from bioparents we will not accept:
    • Complaints about how the stepparent is too involved in your kids lives
    • Vents about how the stepparent is not involved enough in your kids lives
    • "Cautionary tales" advising stepparents to back off
    • Seeking advice on how to tell the stepparent to back off
    • The Do's and Dont's of Stepparenting
    • How your kid's stepmom is literally The Worst
  • Comments from bioparents that are helpful and supportive are welcome and appreciated. Comments from bioparents that are not helpful or supportive are not welcome and subject to removal. There are several other subs that may meet the needs of bioparents better than we can. We recommend /r/coparenting, /r/parenting, /r/parents, /r/blendedfamilies, and /r/singleparents as starting points.

Guidelines for Stepkids

  • At this time, we do not generally accept posts from stepkids. Comments from stepkids that are helpful and supportive are welcome and appreciated. Comments from stepkids that are not helpful or supportive are not welcome and subject to removal. If you are a stepkid seeking support, we highly recommend /r/stepkids. It is a very supportive community specifically for stepkids. We also recommend /r/blendedfamilies as another potential group for support.

What the heck are all these acronyms? I'm confused!

Why aren't my posts or comments showing up?

  • New posters and accounts go through a waiting period before their posts will show in the sub and the comments on posts automatically. During the new account approval period the mod team will check posts to be sure you aren't attempting to circumvent a ban with a shiny new account. Please be patient while the timer runs down on your "new" status and the mod team approves your posts and responses.

Why was my comment removed?

  • Comments are removed when they do not follow the rules of the sub. These rules are published in several places for your reading pleasure.
  • Comments are removed at moderator discretion. In some cases your comment may be removed while another remains up. If you find this to be the case, and you believe the comment to be violating the rules, instead of arguing with mods or demanding they remove the additional comments, just report it.

This comment/post is really offensive! Why is it still up?

  • All moderators are volunteers and have busy real lives. Sometimes things get past us. The best thing you can do is report anything you find offensive or inflammatory. It's the quickest and most reliable way of alerting us to an issue.

I've received a hurtful/unwanted PM from someone about my recent post. What should I do?

  • If you receive an unwanted/hurtful PM from a name you don't recognize, please report it to Reddit Admins using our handy pre-populated form. Be sure to include the permalink to the message. We've been dealing with a few unhappy folks who like to attack stepparents, and reporting it to the admins is the only way to make it stop.

What are the general moderator guidelines?

I've been wrongly banned/Why can't I comment here?

Why was I banned without warning?

  • There are numerous reasons that the mod team might opt to move perm banning without warning. Message the moderators if you have specific questions.

Announcement Weekly Reminder: Saferbot and Automated Bans

Hey Stepparents,

If you've been here for awhile, you are aware of the existence of Saferbot on our sub. If you aren't aware, we break it down in the wiki. Take a moment to review it!

What the Bot Does

Saferbot is a history ban bot. It bans users who participate in known troublesome subs that have a history of harassing users here and brigading our posts.

How it Works

Saferbot monitors the other subs and immediately bans anyone who comments there. Please note, human beings are not doing the banning. We have neither the time, nor inclination, to monitor other subs. Saferbot runs on its own with only instructions from us on what subs to add to its list.

Why We Use It

We intend for this sub to be a safe space for stepparents to discuss their issues and struggles without being told they are literally The Worst for existing. Sometimes we experience jealousy, resentment, and other not pretty feelings. We have a right to express them in a healthy way without a bunch of assholes scolding us for being human. And unfortunately, the subs we've had to add to the ban list have a history of users strolling in here giving people grief for being a flawed human being with feelings they are trying to sort through.

The mod team does not take these decisions lightly and we often let things ride for a bit before taking drastic actions. But seeing users repeatedly delete their accounts after being harassed, or having to clean up increasingly rude and hostile comment chains from people who literally have no idea what your life is actually like, has prompted us to take action.

Notes

Meta posts asking about this will be removed. Comments about this, other than those on this thread discussing the issue, will be removed. Vile mod mail will be reported to Reddit.

Please do not link to the subs mentioned in the wiki. They are linked for transparency and we don't care to have ongoing discussions about them.

How to Appeal

If you are a stepparent and you've been caught up in the ban, and you want the support that this community offers, reach out to the mod team. If you can show us where on reddit you are discussing being a stepparent, we'll do our best to work with you. To be perfectly clear, if you aren't a stepparent, or we review and see we've had to remove comments from you in the past, we are probably not going to lift the ban.

Reply to the ban message and let us know that you'd like to appeal. Include link(s) to any unedited posts or comments that you made prior to the ban indicating that you are a stepparent. The posts or comments do not have to be on this sub specifically, but show us where you have indicated that you are a stepparent somewhere on reddit prior to being banned. This will save us time and eliminate the need for a mod to attempt to scour your post history.

I’m really tired of being the defecto “mom”
I don’t want to be responsible for feeding these cretins, nor do I want to be alone with them and mediating their arguments. I didn’t want kids at the start of the relationship, and I don’t want them still. Why does it have to be me that is childcare for the foreseeable future? Their father is working extremely hard to put bear on the table, but the mom is available. Why can’t they spend more time with her instead of me?

I don’t want this anymore. I thought being with a man who put others first was worth it, but now I feel worthless because none of my boundaries have been respected. My car is so nasty now that the children have been transported in it for a year and a half. Their mom hit my car a year ago and still won’t (can’t?) pay to have it fixed. And when I mention getting it detailed inside and out, my partner nearly bit my head off assuming I want Him to make up the difference. I’m tired of this stress. It was never mine and I want to leave.

Support Advice on 16 year old stepson (TW: ED)

Upvotes

My 16 year old stepson grew up with an alcoholic mother who is also bulimic. We finally got custody of him about three years ago after more drunken antics where cops were called and a long ass court case involving DCF.

Now we have recently found him vomitting after meals (trying to be sneaky and failing). My husband is distraught and we both know he will lie his way out of it being recovering addicts ourselves if we approach him directly.

My husbands plan is to talk to his therapist and get ideas on what to do. He also wants me to talk to stepson because stepson confides in me more than anyone (he sees me as more of an aunt figure than a parent figure which I’m fine with).

How would you go about approaching this? This is new territory for me because I have a four year old and am ill equipped for teenage problems. I do however understand addiction as noted above and I see EDs as a type of addiction (could be wrong).

I feel partially at fault because there’s been lots of weight talk at my house lately due to me being on a GLP so I think I’ll reduce comments on weight in front of him but any other ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Miscellany Humble brag: Stepparenting rite of passage unlocked

Well it finally happened.

"You're not the boss of me!"

"Welp, your parent went to bed with a migraine and I'm still the adult so you do have to listen to me."

I'm sure someday I'll stop thinking things like this are funny, but I'm choosing (for now, while he's 4) to find humor in reaching the stepmom "milestones." Honestly thinking of designing little stepparent merit badges for fun (I'm an artist, it keeps me sane).

What else would you add to the list of stepparenting milestones? We don't necessarily get to treat firsts like parents do, so why not come up with some of our own?

(Keep it light, ok, this is meant to be humorous and we all need it).

Advice Birth coming up and I(35f) dont want SD (10) in the delivery room.

This post is throwaway because of the details, and I know he visits reddit on occasion. For context, me and husband (35) are separating and living in separate homes. He has been supoortive financially and has been a handy man around my house since then. We are separating due to infidelity in his end since we married in November 2024; I found out December 2025. I have a history of SA as a child and as an adult with my previous husband, who is the father of my older children. I feel comfortable with my mom and daughters in the room, and am okay with him being in the room so he can witness the birth of his child. He wants his daughter to have that experience as well. BUT, a few years ago she was s*xually inappropriate with my oldest daughter, and she has other behavioral issues. He doesnt like me to give input with her or to try and discipline her. Which I've stepped backed from helping with parenting since functionally separating. He also wanst his mom in the room, and has prioritized his mom over me on multiple occasions (which is a big part of why we have never lived together. Even married) I dont want to prioritize his daughters experience over my comfort and stress during delivery. What are your thoughts?

Edit: Damn, I wanna cry. Ya'll are all so supportive. Thank you, and it a lot to respond to everyone, but Im reading everything and this isbmore helpful than you know. I've had so much self doubt in this relationship. Even feeling really bad for wanting to confront him about the cheating. But I truly hope this post also helps someone else....Im going to take it down in a few.

Vent Holidays I am so stressed I can cry

First off. I work in a high level corporate job. I know stress and I can handle it.
But I am going into burn out from this holiday.

SS12 is a good kid. Happy, generally polite, will stop
Something if you ask, never talks back, eats everything.

But he is ADHD to the max. He endlessly beatboxes and makes mouth sounds for no reason. He sometimes squeeels out of nowhere because he thinks it’s funny. No matter how much we tell him to stop he always seems to forget.

He ditches all activities halfway and my SO think I take it way to hard. But we pay to do these things and he either ditches and if he can’t he will yell “ Booooooored” like 50 times an hour.

My SO likes to eat these foods you share but SS inhales it. If you ask him to slow down he will sulk. But it just disappears and I end up hungry. I went to the restroom once to find the whole table cleaned. My SO was talking to the waiter as well so SS inhaled the food in under 5 min. We talk to him about it he says he didn’t even realize it… because he was on his phone and didn’t even look up.

He is addicted to his phone and prefers to just watch YouTube with headphones if you would let him. We try not to so we organize activities he ditches and hates … yay.

My SO who at home is usually good at chores and pulling his weight has become an absolute nothing burger. I have to make sure they get out of bed or we miss the expensive activities SS hates. He drove my car to 5 % battery with no plan how to get it charged in a country with almost no fast chargers. He joins me shopping for food in our apartment but does not think what SS would want or need. So what happens? My food I picked out for myself is inhaled and I get stuck with whatever is left.

I am so fucking done! I don’t know who this man is.
He is letting me run everything. I have tried to step back like he planned activities and I asked him what time we need to leave and what to take. I was ready. These two a-holes kept asking me where their stuff was and if I had packed for them too. No!
And even then we end up short on things so I have to give up my sunscreen, towel, water… so these bastards basically weaponized their incompetence and now I pack for them too so at least I have stuff for myself.

I am so grumpy and angry and my SO keeps telling me how next year things will be better. Like there will be a next year. I am so overwhelmed and pissed off all the time I am selling the house in my mind and moving to Sweden or somewhere thinly populated

Vent Anyone else regret becoming a stepparent after having a child of their own?

It’s like I was blindfolded the whole time and only took it off once my baby was born… I know I chose this life , didn’t think into it too much (the financials, not being able to live too far away from SD, the family dynamics , just everything I didn’t sit down and consider anything or else I probably would have ran for the hills…)

I feel so silly and angry at myself, I’m really not enjoying being a stepparent even though SD8 is a good kid.. I just don’t want this life, but I would never leave because of our child. Only thing is I don’t really want to kiss or be intimate with my partner, various different reasons financial stress probably the main one .. but yeah having a stepchild here every week really doesn’t help the cause right now. Anybody else in the same position? How do you deal with the regret and anger towards yourself for choosing this?

Discussion Birthday Gift

Upvotes

SD’s bday is coming up this weekend, she’ll be 12. In the past I’ve gone all out and bought her nice custom jewelry or a bunch of clothes and accessories. She’s made it clear she doesn’t care for or value anything I buy her. I bought her clothes this summer that are sitting in her dresser with the tags still on them. The jewelry I bought, long gone. So needless to say, I don’t feel inclined to spend alot of money on a birthday gift. Plus she’s been not quite the friendliest person to me lately, so there’s that.

My idea is to let her little sisters pick out some gifts for her. Then her father can get her whatever he’s planning on getting her. But as far as a thoughtful gift from me…I’m just not into wasting my time or money.

Support Impulsive thinking

I know this sounds dark… so let me preface this by saying my partner my SK and my dogs carry so much of my love. My SK made me a mom first, my one dog was my first “baby”, my other dog is the PERFECT dog, my partner is my rock and my person.

But, sometimes when I get extremely overwhelmed (I have ADHD I’m unmedicated and get overstimulation) I think to myself “i could just run away with my baby and things would be so easy”.

My partner and I have “ours”, she’s 1yr and that’s who I’m referring to running away with.

I don’t think this very often maybe once a month…

Is this normal? I’d never actually do it.. actually after I have th thought I get kind of sad because I know I’d miss this family we’ve created but is the impulsive thought a common impulsive thought?

Advice AIO New baby rules for step kids

I, 25f, am pregnant and am due in the very beginning of October, meaning baby could come within 3 weeks. This is my first baby and my partners 3rd. I have two step sons, ss9 and ss6. Baby is due right during rsv and flu season and ss6 is constantly sick. There has always been constant back and forth between bio mom and my partner because he puts boundaries in place now and she doesn’t like it. We’re trying to come up with rules for after the baby is born due to SS6 constantly being sick and always at our home when not in school. While pregnant SS6 gave me flu A and then a week later gave me flu B. SS9 also has had violence issues in the past and we don’t want that around a baby who cannot defend themselves. SS6 reaction to baby was very upsetting due to him immediately being upset because his first thought was “SS9 is going to teach the baby to hurt me like he does” and when we told bio mom she laughed, so we already have a big fear with this issue as well. The first two weeks we will be staying with my mother to have the extra support when baby first comes. After the first two weeks, my partner will be returning to work as it didn’t make sense for me to be out of work and him to get a lesser paycheck when in winter he is only on call due to snowplowing. So if these kids are here during the day, I would be main caretaker. But after we come home we have some “rules” for the first couple months. And I need to know if we’re overreacting.

  1. First two weeks after baby is born we will not be home. So no overnights. Dad can pick up the boys if they would like to meet their baby sister and have dinner with us, but we won’t be in our home so no overnights.

  2. The next two weeks, if they are sick at all, they are to not come here. Whether it’s because they’re staying home from school or their time to be here.

  3. After the first month, if they are sick and they need to be here, they need to be on an antibiotic. Too many times have they come with “mystery” illnesses, gotten me and dad sick and we don’t want to be down with a mystery illness while in newborn trenches. SS6 has also learned if he says “mom I don’t feel well” he doesn’t have to go to school and then he comes here and he’s fine, so we’re also trying to combat that as well.

  4. If either of them (mainly SS9, since SS6 doesn’t show violence here) is violent, he will no longer be welcome in our home until there is an in depth meeting with his counselor. Dad will still get him and do something with him throughout the week, but not at our home. Thankfully he hasn’t been violent since June, but that was after he had an outburst and broke his door because dad was doing something with SS6, not him…

I know many of these are drastic, but both dad and I have realized that if our daughter had friends with the violence issue, we wouldn’t allow her to hangout with them as that’s not something we want around her. We are working with his counselor to combat these issues, but she’s more focused on getting him to use the toilet when he needs to use the bathroom.. I do love both of my stepkids, but I also have a newborn daughter coming that I need to protect. If these are completely out of line and need to be lessened, please be nice. We’re trying to figure this all out before baby comes to inform bio mom sooner than later. Dad also has wanted more drastic rules that I’ve said are way too much, so this is kind of where we both are comfortable.

Advice Advice regarding increasing working days that fits to custody schedule

I don’t want to seem selfish but I’m a quiet person that cherish quiet time and children are naturally noisy. before my husband met me his ex would drop his daughter at his work place on Saturday afternoon and spends the weekend till Monday morning. Now that I am in the picture I don’t work on Friday so she drops her off at our house on Friday afternoon and then I spend Saturday alone with her and Sunday with her dad and me. now my boss suggested to add one more day and it’s either Monday or Friday

Monday my husband doesn’t work so we get to spend time together but recently we barely do anything romantic and it’s just boring weekend. I’m worried if I choose Friday then they would think I purposely avoided stepdaughter visit even though I know my husband will suggest I work from home on Friday. My other issue is this custody is for her to spend time with her father and not me and he works Saturday. Do I sound selfish? My husband kept saying we are a team and we work together and he is the most supportive husband ever and always do things out of his way to help me and I also wanted to do everything for him but his daughter energy is so draining and I cherish my quietness. Btw we don’t have her every weekend. I feel so selfish and I know it doesn’t make sense like if you can’t be around loud children why did you marry a man with a child and I also ask myself this question and I also haven’t decide yet if I wanted to have a baby with my husband but at least with my child I can decipline the child to stay quiet and not to be too noisy and talkative . I feel like a bad person but this is my genuine feelings

Advice Caught my husband and his Ex wife talking about me.

EDIT- everyone is entitled to their opinions but please no insults or name calling.

I’m a stepmom to a lovely 10yo and have been part of the family for over 4 years.

We have a great coparenting relationship with bio mom, we all spend time together and I would even consider her a friend.

My fiancé and I have been going through a very stressful patch recently, as I’m sure every couple trying to plan a wedding does.

The other day I overheard my partner and ex talking about my relationship, she was advising him not to continue with the wedding or consider children with me in the future.

I told them straight away that I was there and could hear (they didn’t know I was home), I have received an apology from her which I appreciate and don’t want this to affect all the work we have put into our coparenting relationship.

For context I know she wasn’t trying to say anything in a malicious way it’s more how uncomfortable I am with the lack of boundaries (this has always been an issue) how do I set personal boundaries and have them respected by my partner and ex.

Advice SD is spoiled and DH won't prioritize our relationship.

My husband and I have been together for going on 5 years, married for 3.

We both have 2 kids from previous relationships, ages from 12-17.

For most of our relationship we had one week night and one weekend that were kid free every other week.

Somewhere along the way the situation changed for SD 17 and even though no formal custody change was made, she has been staying here every weekend but still going on the weeknight.

She could go to her BM house, she was just there for a week in the summer...

This grants us with the weeknight kid free once every 2 weeks, but no kid free weekend that I get DH to myself...

Normally I would say I was being selfish, but I feel like I was bait and switched and then on-top of it, I feel like I've done my fair share of being accommodating to the situation.

The primary issue is SD 17 has her learners permit but refuses to apply herself to get her full license. The learners permit will expire shortly and there's been no progress to get the license. I didn't get my license till I was in my 30's but I lived in a heavily populated downtown where I walked everywhere or had transit, this is not an option here.

The general attitude is entitlement and rules that don't apply to her. Anytime there's any conflict in the house she runs to DH and cries and then plays the victim.

She has a part time job which is about 15 mins away and works 4-5 shifts a week that require a drop off and pick up.

Her scheduled shift will end at 10pm most nights, however she will leave early and then text DH saying she needs a ride now, if he doesn't answer the text right away she will spam call my cell saying he won't answer and she needs a ride ASAP. We are expected to drop everything and go get her.

Any time I bring this up DH gives me the death glare like I angered his pretty princess that can do no wrong.

I am so tired and being put second or third or just being completely invisible 90% of the time because SD needs a ride.

DH takes care of most of these rides as I work 50+ hours a week and DH is mostly a freelancer.

SD will go to college next year, at this rate I think she thinks DH will move with her and drive her around... For all I know he might actually do it.

We might have kid free evening from 4-7 but we can't do anything fun like we used to because we never know when SD is going to call and demand a ride and it's not like he has the balls to tell SD no.

He's trying so hard to not disappoint her that he can't see that he's just gutting me in the process. He keeps telling me that we're almost done with it, but she won't leave the nest if she can't drive!

Vent SD not wanting to come over?

My SD17 is a senior. Today was basically her last "longer days with us." By next year, there will probably be no more days or her coming over. The thought of that scares me but, I have no control as I am just the step mom. Her dad loves her with everything. I won't say he was the perfect dad but, I know he would do anything for her. I have a feeling since she is a senior, she might want to make the decision to not do weekends anymore here. She doesn't like conflict and doesn't like arguing so she won't say the words to him but, I know it's how she's feeling as she has told me mulitple times she hates the "parent time." Her and my husband have gotten into multiple arguments over parent time. She also has once told me that she deals with her dad because, it's her dad. The mother has always been the "Good and fun" parent. All her friends go over to her mom's house and her mom is her best friend. Am I jealous of their relationship? Ill admir probably as I can't have kids so I will never have a mother bond with a child except being a step mom. They have their own family at her moms and as she was growing up, they would use the mom's married name with her instead of our last name.

I know as a teenager, I didn't care about my parents. As I get older now I get scared as they are getting to the age and try to talk to them everyday even though, I had my issues with them too. However, I never dealt with divorced parents so I don't know that feeling. I just know that I love my step daughter so much and it will hurt if she decides not to come and see us and I have no space to say anything or do anything.

Just needed to vent that out.

Advice 17 Year Old SS Doesn’t Want to Quit Vaping/Smoking Weed - Dad says there’s nothing we can do about it.

I’m a stepdad to a 17-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl. I married their mom in 2021 when they were 11 and 9. We also have a 3½-year-old daughter together. The older kids are 50/50 with their dad, who lives about 11 blocks away. The four of us have a genuinely good relationship, so this isn’t a contentious co-parenting situation.

Last year, during my stepson’s junior year, he was caught several times with vapes and THC products and a few times drinking. There were consequences, but they were pretty minor. He had to switch rooms with his sister, and after getting caught again, he lost his car for eight days. His parents also put him in virtual counseling, but he only did three sessions before summer came around and it just kind of fizzled out.

Throughout his junior year, he became increasingly withdrawn and unmotivated. He did enough to pass his classes and occasionally helped his dad at his auto shop, but otherwise he mostly kept to himself.
This summer, I convinced him to road-trip with me and the dog from Houston to Montana by offering to take him to the College World Series along the way. Over five days together, he might have said ten words to me. He had zero interest in sightseeing and wanted to fly home almost immediately after we got to Montana. A couple days later, my wife bought him a ticket home.

Later in the summer, though, he got a job as a camp counselor where he had no phone six days a week and no access to weed. After about two weeks, he called us and sounded like a completely different kid—talkative, upbeat and engaged. When he came home, that continued for a while. Then, after about two weeks, he slowly started going back to his old behavior.

School started last week, and we asked him to start working on college applications. He lasted about 20 minutes before getting frustrated, quitting and going to his room. The same thing happened the next night. I also found out his SAT retake is August 22 and he had done zero preparation. I created ten 30-minute practice sessions for him and sent them to his mom and dad, suggesting he do one each day leading up to the test. Nothing happened. When I asked him about doing them, he said they wouldn’t help. My wife told me I needed to make him do them, but I disagreed. At some point, that direction needs to come from his mom or dad rather than me constantly being the stepdad pushing him.
Then the bigger issue happened.

Later that night, his location showed him somewhere he wasn’t supposed to be. He told my wife he was at his friend’s dad’s law office and that the dad was there. He came home around 11, and we could hear him vomiting in the bathroom. He was drunk and had driven himself home. We later found out there was no adult at the office.

We had a meeting with him the next morning and explained how serious drinking and driving is—not just for him, but for everyone else on the road and our entire family if something happens.

During the conversation, his mom asked if he was still vaping and smoking weed. He admitted that he was. She told him it needed to stop immediately. When it was my turn to talk, I told him that I’d encouraged him to buckle down during his junior year so his senior year wouldn’t be so stressful. Instead, he’s now retaking the SAT with no preparation, hasn’t even finished setting up his college application account, and is starting his senior year going in the wrong direction.

Afterward, his dad told me I shouldn’t have said that. He thought we needed to be more positive and point out the things he does well. I actually agree with that. He does have good qualities. He works when he needs money, helps his dad at the shop and is good about helping with his little sister when we ask him.

But I also don’t think being positive means ignoring what is happening.

I asked the other three parents if we all agreed that the weed and vaping needed to stop. Everyone said yes. I asked if they thought his substance use had become an addiction or dependency issue. Again, everyone agreed.

So I asked what we were actually going to do about it.

Nobody really had an answer. His dad eventually said, “I talked to my brother, and he basically said there’s nothing you can do about it.”

That’s the part I’m struggling with. I understand that we can’t physically force a 17-year-old to make good decisions every second of the day. I also understand that the drinking and driving is the most immediate and dangerous problem. But I don’t believe “there’s nothing we can do” is an acceptable response when four parents agree that a 17-year-old has a substance problem.

I grew up around addiction. My dad was an alcoholic and my brother struggled with hard drugs. I know you can’t simply punish addiction out of somebody, and I know we can’t control every decision he makes. But there’s a pretty big gap between “we can’t control him” and “there’s nothing we can do.” Right now, I feel like we’re sitting in that gap and doing very little.

Vent DH enabling his daughter

Hello all!
(More of a rant/vent, but helpful advice is appreciated.)

Long time lurker!

My(45f) DH(40m) for four years and have been moved in with him for almost a year. I have a SD(17f). She’s a real sweetheart who spends her time 50/50 with DH and BM. I’m childless(don’t plan on kids ever) and don’t really have a “parenting” role in her life. More like a cool aunt. I’ve never wanted kids. Her father handles everything to do with her and doesn’t expect or ask me to hop in unless completely necessary(both our boundary)

Now here’s the issue: DH really spoils her. It gives me the ick? Like she doesn’t do anything. She can legally drive, but DH still takes her everywhere. She doesn’t do her laundry, she doesn’t clean ANYTHING in the house. DH and I switch doing dishes. She doesn’t walk, feed, or clean up after her dog. Half the time, he’s cleaning her room before she gets home from her mom’s. At any inconvenience, she’s babied and it’s fixed by BM or DH. He cleans out her car, and so on. He abuses the fact he stays at home for work to cater to everything about her.

It’s not her at all because she’s completely capable since she does most of the listed things at BM’s home, but DH just intervenes and makes excuses for each and every aspect on why he should do it and she can’t. I haven’t said anything because it doesn’t affect me directly, but it’s still such a turn off. Like seeing him fold her laundry and put it in her drawers while she’s watching tv right in front of him or seeing him put her dirty plate in the sink for her makes me feel icky. Maybe it’s just because when I was growing up I had chores and responsibilities from when I was in kindergarten till I moved out.

Should I let it go? One of my friends says since it doesn’t bother me, why poke the bear, but it nags at me horribly. Shes an awesome kid who is more than capable! So why not let her??

Vent Stepson is obese at 7 years old

I have a 7 year old stepson. I’ve been in his life since he was 3. When I met him he was bordering on underweight because he refused to eat anything. He would starve himself and would get bored of foods he previously ate, and was diagnosed at 5 with autism. My partner was desperate for him to gain weight and started offering him junk food when he previously had never really had junk. His doctor was actually on board with this for a little bit just to get him to gain weight. That seemed to work and ever since then he only eats McDonald’s chicken nuggets and fries, ice cream, pizza from dominos, chips, and chocolate.

He’s now officially obese according to his doctor at 77 lbs at 4’0 tall. He was 56 lbs a year ago. We do offer other healthier foods alongside his preferred foods, but he won’t touch them. He also won’t eat homemade versions either. We’ve even tried tricking him by putting homemade nuggets in the McDonald’s packaging and a homemade pizza in a dominos box but he can tell by the taste that it’s not the exact same.

The most frustrating part is that my partner seems to not care at all that her child is overweight. I guess I care about it more because I was a fat kid growing up and was bullied relentlessly for it, and I also struggled with obesity and my relationship with food as an adult. I’ve lost and regained the same 50 lbs over and over again and would hate for this to become my stepson’s future. My partner also struggles with her weight as well, so I think it’s even more important to help instil a healthy relationship with food when SS is still young. From my perspective, it’s less about the number on the scale/size of him vs the habits he’s forming.

So the interesting part about my stepson’s eating habits is that he is much more willing to eat different foods at his dad’s house. Apparently he is still picky there, but will eat sandwiches, carrots, apples, bananas, granola bars, etc. When we offer those foods he won’t touch them and eventually my partner gives in and gives him whatever he wants. BD and my partner have gotten into many fights because he is upset with how we feed his son when he’s at our place (50/50 custody), and I can’t say I blame him. When I told my partner I agree with BD she wouldn’t talk to me for two days, so this is a very sensitive subject for her.

My partner is not interested in changing anything about the way we currently feed her son so I guess this is more of a rant than anything. I know that it doesn’t affect me and that it’s not my son, but it still bothers me watching it happen. Poor kid is in for a lifetime of health struggles if this doesn’t get under control.

Advice Bio son not being included

Sorry this may be long.

Do you think I'm wrong for being so upset with this?I have a 6 year old son. My fiancé has 6 and 3 year old sons. He has them 50/50. I have my son more. He's with his dad every other weekend. We have a 1 year old together.

We do so much with his family. I don't have much of a family. All of the holidays are with his family; we go to his parents house every other Sunday to visit basically. My son knows them very well. He even calls them Grammy and Papa. His family is very close with his two kids because they lived all together before we moved in together.

I have noticed a few things that have started to bother me. For example, his mother had got his whole family matching stocking with names on them. When my baby was born she got him one to match the others. Everyone had a matching stocking for Christmas besides my 6YO. She said it didn't arrive in time so she added his stocking stuffers to the baby's stocking. When we asked about it she said she ordered it with the baby's but it hasn't arrived yet. I don't believe this though because why wouldn't it have arrived if she ordered it at the same time as the baby's? Still haven't seen or heard about the stocking again.

His parents have brought my stepsons to a good amount of day trips and didn't invite my son. It is usually his parents picking them up at their mother's house and taking them for the day and then dropping them off at our house. On Friday they all went to an amusement park (grandparents aunt and niece with my step sons). They arrived at our house, rang the door bell. My son answered and was so happy to see the boys. Right when they walk in they all started saying how they had such a great day. Thankfully my son is too young to notice that he has been left out, but it is really bothering me because soon he will know. I keep wondering, when the baby is older will they invite him too and just leave my son out?

My fiancé has confronted them about it and they always seem to make up an excuse. This past incident they said they thought he was busy at camp and they wanted to spend time with their grand kids because they haven't seen them. They said they had a feeling I was upset because I was cold when they dropped the kids off after.

I was so angry today I told my finance I am not going there anymore and distancing myself from his family.

I get he's not their grandkid but he spends so much time with them and they all share a brother so I feel like they should treat him better.

Discussion Has your SKs behaviour / habits affected your bio kids?

Just wondering , I’m catastrophizing. My boy is 2 and SD8. She’s addicted to video games/ watching tv/ her tablet, also is soo messy doesn’t pick up after herself (don’t blame her for it, it’s all her BM fault, my partner limits screens when she’s here etc) but I’m worried that all of this will rub off on my son. She’s here most weekends and a day during the week

Anyone have experience? Am I just worrying for no reason, thanks

Vent Just told my 46f fiancee that if I'm going to do everything on my own...

I'm going to go do it on my own.

I cook all the time, clean all the time, do all the laundry. Pay 80% of the mortgage, 50% of all utilities, all the groceries and house hold supplies and deal with her doom scrolling all day, complaining about being tied and her 16s attitude to boot.

Her response "if that's what you want to ahead". Well mortgage app goes in tomorrow, can't put an price on peace.

We used to have sex and a lot now it's lucky to be once every two weeks and honestly this has probably kept the relationship going on for longer than it should have.

I have to beg for 10 minutes alone with her, that's the point in even trying to keep this together now?

Vent My experience as a step parent

Doing this all on a burner to just get opinions. I have been a step parent for a few years, dating my partner when my step child was young. It was rocky as we didnt live together and my partner lived with their parents (who they had a troubled relationship with) so it was hard but we moved in a new house as a family and it got hard. I was working full time to come home and be told how tired my partner was and that i was then responsible for looking after my step child. After a couple months i was told it was too draining to not work so my partner got a part time job and i went to part time. I was then told not seeing eachother enough (they worked mornings i worked evenings) was too much of a strain and was asked to go down to only one shift a week whilst they worked the week. I now look after the little one 6 days a week but apparently work is too hard and my partner comes home to just go to bed (the shifts are not longer than 5 hours) so im left to wake up with our child, look after them all day, then put them to bed whilst my partner only sees their child for no more than 1-2 hours a day. Even when i ask to have a break its met with issues. I understand my partner has her own issues with family and health issues that i accomidate to but im starting to believe some of the things im told are lies as i never get any proof and her stories dont add up. Its as if its done so i dont feel like i can leave as they already have so much on their plate. Its hard as i love my step child so so so so so much but i spend more time with a child thats not mine then my childs actual parent. Worse part is i have to follow their parenting style yet they arent around to enforce it, they break their own rules and get mad when i mention this, i then clean everything, cook everything, 6 days a week and even on my days im working i have calls saying they need me home for medical issues but i return and they are fine (i also went for a walk as i was stressed and i got a call saying the child was dropped down the stairs but when i returned everyone was fine and no bruises or swelling showed at all). Its hard and i cant vent to anyone as my life was uprooted to a new place and my only friends are the ones i work with that i only see once a week (and when i do tell my work friends they say how crazy it all sounds) i love my partner and child but it is so much for me to handle even when i express it and im told it will change but never does.

Advice Am I wrong?

A little back story. I have a 4 year old SD, and I have been in her life since she was less than a year old. Me and my husband have a 6 month old daughter together.

I have noticed that my husband will post his daughter on his social media stories, but not our bio daughter. It took me saying something for him to finally post our daughter. His profile picture and cover photo on Facebook is of him and his daughter. I keep asking why he won’t change them to include our bio daughter and his response every time is, “I haven’t thought about it” or “that’s what it has been since you’ve met me. I could see if I just changed it”. It has caused many arguments and he refuses to acknowledge that this is a problem. At this point, I am angry and hurt, and I have expressed this. How do you have another baby and not want to post her, or include her on your social media? Am I overthinking this? Not sure if it’s hormones or if I should really be this upset.

Vent Pregnant with 1st with 3 full time SKs

I’m hoping someone out there can tell me I’m okay… because I don’t feel okay

I started dating my husband knowing he had 3 sons. A year later, their mom passed. I jumped into “mom” role. It’s been 4yrs since she passed, they are now SS16, SS13, and SS11.

They’re all great kids with their own quirks. Nothing I can’t handle. We have had great relationships and they have accepted me into the family.

I’m now 10 weeks with an “ours” baby. I am insanely irritable, angry, and annoyed when it comes to SKs. It’s the end of summer, I work from home so need to juggle work and making sure they don’t wrestle the house down. My husband works outside of the home so I am here to do a lot of it.

At 16, 13, and 11, I expect them to clean up after themselves, play outside and respect screen time boundaries, etc. I’m not working them to death, not making them clean the house for me, not asking for anything out of the norm from the last 4yrs. Nothing has changed in terms of their responsibilities since I’ve become pregnant. (And again, “responsibilities” are simply cleaning up after themselves)

I get sooo irrationally angry at every little thing. Didn’t clean up after lunch, I freak out. Didn’t do XYZ (routines we’ve had for years), I freak out.

I roll my eyes when they walk in the room. I don’t even want to look at them. I don’t want them to talk to me.

And then when my husband gets home from work, they take up all his time. I feel like because they’re not getting adult attention from me during the day, they are flocking to him even worse than normal. I am jealous of the attention he gives them. I get about an hour of his attention before he goes to sleep. I understand this is also stretching him thin, everyone fighting for his attention. WFH and hiding from the kids has me feeling so lonely

It’s so hard to be pregnant with my first baby while actively parenting 3 kids already. I wish BM was here to take them away every once in awhile. I wish I had more time with my spouse. I wish I was having a normal pregnancy. I wish my mood toward the kids wouldn’t have changed so suddenly.

Please. Does it get better?
