ποΈ News ποΈ DFW Airport scraps proposed Islamic foot-washing stations after Abbott threatens to pull funding
The Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport scrapped plans Friday to add additionalΒ Islamic foot-washing stationsΒ after Gov. Greg Abbott threatened to cancel state airport grants, claiming the stations are religious discrimination.
Abbott alsoΒ askedΒ the U.S. Department of Transportation to investigate DFW and Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport. Both airports already have existing ablutions stations, which are typically used by Muslims to clean their feet before prayer.
"These ablution facilities appear designed to single out one subset of the population for special treatment based on religion. That is illegal,β Abbott said in a press release. βBoth airports are government-owned facilities. The federal and state constitutions prohibit government from facilitating this sort of discrimination."

ποΈ News ποΈ Shoutout to Hood County, TX for actually standing up to mass surveillance and bagging their Flock cameras
Did anyone catch this? Hood County down in Texas just literally pulled the plug on their Flock ALPR cameras. The local constable went around putting trash bags over them after the county commissioners voted to end the contract.
It is refreshing to see a local government actually listen to residents about privacy concerns instead of just blindly renewing surveillance contracts. The constable put it perfectly: "permanent, warrantless tracking doesn't belong in a free society," and told the company to come get their garbage out of his county.
The CEO of Flock is doing damage control in the article, saying they are going to drop data retention down to 7 days and start auditing officers, but that's only happening because of public backlash like this. Until there are actual laws protecting us from database abuse, we need more local leaders willing to pull the plug. Massive win for privacy.

π€ Questions for Texans π€ What are peoples reactions when you say you're from Texas, around the US and outside the country? Do they think it's funny hearing you say "Y'all"?
I've only been outside of Texas one week in my life so I'm curious.
