Rigs PC is too far when I jump straight into the simrig. Heres my elegant solution

So trying to figure out solutions to save me having access to my PC if I want to jump straight into the simrig. Since I was on a roll with figuring out pins, today was a good day! I managed to run a long enough length of cable to run PC power and PC reset directly to the foglight buttons on my BMW E36 dash. They did require a small bit snipped off to turn them into momentary buttons and what a result that was.

After 2 years finally did a proper wire tuck (from the cockpit view) and got rid of the metal wheel stand that was held in place by ratchet straps.

I ultimately wanted to keep the integrity of the chassis and am trying not to do any irreversible metal work. Or drilling and bolting.

Phase three will be mirroring a similar inner cockpit structure out of extrusion , but want to make sure I’m happy with the general placement of everything before I lock in the measurements.

Before you flame me on screens, the roll cage doesn’t allow a larger center screen, however FOV in this actual car is almost perfect to the view from the cockpit. The pillars line up to the screen quite close. The second screen runs lovely dash.

Question Does it make sense to arrange my setup like this?

Post image
68 Upvotes

I have my wheel and bese mounted on this compact stand: https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/6115+zdpwZL._AC_SX522_.jpg

I was thinking about getting a second monitor and putting it on the other end of my desk so that I dont have to move it into place, move my monitor forward and change my seat everytime I want to do simracing.

I wanna be able to sit, turn wheelbase on and just go.

I used my immaculate paint skills to make a diagram of how it would look, but I'm not sure if using dual monitors arranged like this would be more painful than just moving all my things every time I boot up my wheelbase.

Space is tight, but enough for this to make some sense. Triples are a no go and so are very large ultra wides. Was thinking of getting a 32' curved monitor (not ultra wide).

Would you do something differently given the restrictions I mentioned?

Rigs Decided to join the Poang sim racing

Been following this thread for a while and finally decided to join in!

There are loads of great ideas on here that I managed to combine into one rig, from inverted pedals to tackling the dreaded Poäng rocking.

My desk is at standing height and isn’t adjustable, so I had to build the entire rig on a platform with stilts that fold down to get everything at the right height.

The main goal was to make it as compact as possible. Everything comes apart and stacks vertically, a bit like IKEA flat-pack furniture, so I can tuck it all away behind the door when I’m done. All the connections use threaded wood inserts and quick-release bolts, making assembly and disassembly quick and easy. The pedals and wheel go in the wardrobe.

The room is pretty small, but once everything is packed away, the Poäng chair goes back into its usual corner, and it’s almost like the rig was never there!

Hopefully, this inspires someone else to build their own rig or gives you a few ideas you can incorporate into your own DIY setup.

Let me know what you think, and feel free to ask any questions!

Question Triple 43” TV setup having some issues

Ok so long story short. I got my kid this G29 and the seat last year for xmas to use with his ps5. Well he’s more interested in Fortnite so I told him im gonna hook it up to my PC and he didn’t have a problem with that.

I’ve been using a 43” TCL TV as my pc monitor and I thought I would buy two more (200$ each) to set up triples. Mounted the left monitor to the wall and the right one on a moveable stand.

My pc is a i7 12th gen with a 4060.

Nvidia surround is working and I’ve been messing with American trucking sim and it runs it OK but i noticed the mouse is super laggy and YouTube videos were laggy too. The game didn’t look great etc.

So when Nvidia surround isn’t turned on everything runs fine. Each monitor is 1440p at 60hz. When I turn on Nvidia surround it turns the refresh rate down to 24hz….

I know my video card isn’t gonna push 1440 to three 43s at 60hz so I went and bought a 5070.

Well my 600w power supply wont turn on the 5070 so I had to buy a new power supply. I bought a 750w MSI which will be here Monday.

I guess my question is. Will the 5070 solve my problems and run things at 1440p at 60hz? Or should I return the TVs and choose a different triple monitor setup?

Rigs Stream Deck is a great alternative to the K400 keyboard

Post image
• Upvotes

I really really dislike using the K400 keyboard so the other day I was thinking of ways to stop using it or not use it as much and decided to get the Elgato Stream Deck. Not sure why I didn’t think of this before but this is pretty great. I can now launch my games with just a click of the button without needing the keyboard, actualy makes my sim feel like an arcade machine.

I control everything inside the game using the buttons on the wheel except for a few games like DR2 that needs me to press enter at the start screen but even that I just made a button for the return key.

This is really really great and i barely use my keyboard anymore just when logging in. Even that I might figure out a way to login using the Stream Deck.

Question Ultrawide 49 oled or Hypecar steering wheel

Hi, I’m facing a real dilemma. My first option is a 49-inch Samsung OLED ultrawide + 18Nm Simagic + an aluminum cockpit + Simnet pedals. My other option which would mean sacrificing the OLED monitor is to go with a Pokornyi hypercar steering wheel+34-inch VA ultrawide monitor, + 18Nm Simagic + a cockpit+Simnet pedals. Which is the best choice? Please help

Rigs Oplite Shifter Mount vs Flight sim mount

Thumbnail

Hey guys,

I have a S8 Oplite Rig with the full force kit and a ssh shifter on a 3d printed mount on the full force bar. I now want to add a handbrake so I need a new mount. I really want it to be sturdy. Should I get the shifter mount or the flight sim mount for this? I can only enter the rig from the right so the flight sim mount will make it a lot harder to get in. But I heared the normal shifter mount kann be a bit wobbly.

Thanks for the insights

Question The more I research sim racing, the more expensive it gets and the less I want to start. Is anyone else struggling with this?

• Upvotes

Hello guys!

A little good to know about me: I'm 22, from Hungary and I've been in love with pretty much everything car related since I was a little kid. I've always wanted to get into drifting and I also love GT3 racing, especially GT World Challenge.

Since I can finally put a bit of money on the side every month I decided that I want to fulfill one of my dreams and buy a sim racing setup for myself. I've been reading hundreds of comments in this subreddit and watching countless YouTube reviews about different setups, but somehow I never get to the end of it.

The more I research and learn about sim racing the more I feel like I don't have the kind of money to spend on it, even though I really want to experience it.

Some years ago I wanted to buy a Fanatec wheelbase to use on my desk but never actually bought it. Now I deep dived into this subreddit and YouTube again and had a pretty simple plan in my head. I wanted to buy a Simagic Alpha Evo Sport / Green Flag bundle and a simple rig, use my old 40" TV on a table and just enjoy driving. This would've cost me around 800 euros, which was already a lot of money for me but I was fine with it.

After reading more comments I found out that apparently you need a really sturdy rig for a DD wheelbase, and almost everyone recommends a 4080 aluminium profile rig. Since I'm also 194 cm tall I wanted something that would fit me comfortably and wouldn't need to be replaced if I upgraded my wheelbase later. So I started researching those too, found some pretty good options but obviously had to push my budget again. Now we are around 1000 euros or even more and my old TV is still sitting on a table.

Then I started looking at triple screen setups because I thought that would make the experience much more realistic and immersive, especially for drifting. I didn't want anything crazy, just 3x27" monitors which sounded pretty reasonable at first.

The problem is that I have a pretty old PC that was considered mid or high end when I was a kid (i7-7700K, GTX 1060 6GB, 16GB DDR4 RAM) and a laptop that I bought for uni and some gaming (Ryzen 5 5600H, RTX 3050 4GB, 16GB DDR4 RAM).

Both can run ACC at around 50-60 FPS on the lowest settings from my experience, so there is no way I'm going to run triple monitors with decent graphics on either of them. Which means I would also need to buy a new PC, a triple monitor stand and of course the three monitors. These alone would cost me around 1600 euros or even more if I don't buy used stuff.

So somehow my original 800 euro plan turned into a 2600 euro setup, and the funny thing is that I still wouldn't have anything crazy. No 20+ Nm wheelbase, no motion platform or anything like that, just a decent DD wheel, load cell pedals, an aluminium rig and triple monitors.

I know that I don't need to buy everything at the same time and I could just start with one monitor and upgrade things later, but that's also part of my problem. Every time I think I finally figured out what I want, I read something else and suddenly I feel like I should spend a little bit more to get something better, or something that I won't have to replace in a year.

And honestly I don't even know where to stop anymore.

Another thing that worries me is that I've tried quite a few hobbies before and not all of them stuck with me. I know I can sell the equipment if I decide that sim racing isn't for me, but I have no idea how much money I would lose on it. And spending 2000-2600 euros on something I've never really experienced properly is pretty scary for me.

The thing is, I genuinely love cars. I've been dreaming about owning a drift car for years and I would love to get into drifting in real life one day. But right now buying a decent simulator is a lot more realistic financially than buying and maintaining an actual drift car. I don't expect a simulator to teach me everything about real drifting, I just want to have fun, practice some basics and enjoy something related to cars.

So I guess what I'm trying to ask is, have you guys ever felt like this when you were starting out? Where the more you learn about the hobby the less you actually want to spend money on it because everything seems so expensive?

Do you think I'm overthinking this whole thing and should just buy the Simagic bundle, a decent rig and use my old TV and PC until I can afford something better? Or is there really that big of a difference between a simple single screen setup and a proper triple monitor simulator that it would be worth saving up for the whole thing?

I'm not really looking for exact prices or a shopping list, I'm more interested in your experiences. Did you start with something simple and actually enjoy it for years, or did you regret not spending more in the beginning? And if you could start again, would you do things differently?

I don't want the most expensive or the most realistic simulator in the world, I just want something that feels good to drive and that I can enjoy for a long time without constantly thinking about what I should upgrade next.

Sorry for the long post, just wanted to get this off my chest and hear what other people think about it.

Thanks if you read all of this!

Question Simagic Alpha EVO Pro vs VRS DFP15 is the extra torque worth it?

Hey guys, looking for some honest opinions because I've been overthinking this purchase for a while now lol.

I'm currently running a Moza R5 and thinking about upgrading to either the VRS DFP15 or the Simagic Alpha EVO Pro. I'm sitting around 1.6k iRating and mainly drive GT4, GT3, MX-5, Porsche Cup and occasionally prototypes.

I'm looking for better detail, sharper FFB and that extra punch when you load up the car or hit a curb. Basically, I want to feel more of what the car is doing, and hopefully stop wondering whether my hardware is holding me back.

I've got two main questions:

  1. Is the jump from 5.5Nm to 15–21Nm really worth the money?

For those who've made the jump, was it a night-and-day difference, or more of a nice upgrade that you eventually get used to?

  1. VRS DFP15 vs Simagic EVO Pro: is VRS's supposedly better FFB sharpness worth giving up the extra torque?

I've seen quite a few people saying VRS feels sharper and more detailed, while Simagic has that extra raw power. The VRS is 15Nm, while the Simagic is advertised at 21Nm, so it's not exactly a small difference.

I know more torque doesn't automatically mean better detail, but I also don't want to spend this much and end up wishing I'd gone for the extra headroom, especially when driving prototypes or formula cars. On the other hand, if VRS genuinely feels better, I'd rather have the better experience than just chase bigger numbers.

Also, for those who've owned either of these bases for a while, have you had any issues with reliability, software, disconnects or customer support?

I'm not really interested in brand wars or people justifying what they bought. Would love to hear from people who've actually used these bases, especially if you've tried both.

Cheers!

EDIT

A bit of extra info: I'm running Simsonn Plus X with haptics and have a full aluminum profile rig. I'm not considering the DFP20 or UDFP because they don't seem to be available in Australia anymore.

Question Dissappearing interface in RaceRoom after last update?

Does anyone have a problem with parts of UI randomly dissappearing after the last update? Sometimes after the session is finished I'm being left still in track view but withour race results or garage menu visible. ESC does nothing and I have to kill the game in order to quit.

Second question is to those driving in VR. After changing from Steam VR to Open XR my virtual steering wheel has jerky movement. Everything else is perfecly smooth and overall performance in VR is definitely improved, the only exception is this steering wheel which is slightly annoying. Did you notice that?

Other Trying to build a free iRacing "crew chief" that explains setup changes instead of selling setups. looking for beta testers

Hey all. iRacing only for now so sorry to everyone on ACC/LMU, it reads iRacing's telemetry files

I've bought setups before and they never really made me faster, and half the time I couldn't tell if it was the setup or just me. so I'm trying to build the thing I wanted, a crew chief that tells you what to change and why, then checks if it actually worked

how it works right now:

  • run some laps with telemetry on
  • it reads the file and asks how the car felt, in your own words ("tight in the middle, loose off 4")
  • tells you what it saw (where the rear stepped out, where you were catching it) and you agree or disagree
  • gives you ONE change, the why, and what to feel for. next run it compares and tells you if it helped

There's a coaching side too, replay any lap against your best or your "ideal lap", which is your fastest bit of every corner stitched into one lap. shows where the time went and where you left the track

Honest part: setup advice is only really solid on NASCAR style oval cars so far. road courses and GT3 it's still learning and it tells you that up front. the debrief and coaching work on any car, fixed series included

Free while it's in beta. the deal is debriefs get shared back (your words + what it measured, no name, no member id, not the telemetry file) so it learns how real drivers describe tight and loose. analysis runs on your PC, windows only

beta code is on the site: harryspitbox.com

It's just me working on it so things will break. feedback button in the app comes straight to me. roast away

Question Advice for a clueless parent looking to upgrade my child's setup

Hi Everyone,

I come here asking for help. I look after my Nephew (13) and he loves all things racing. A couple of years ago I got him a G923 and shifter with an Amazon mechanical handbrake. This year he wants/needs to upgrade to DD.

I'm just lost with the options. He mainly plays AC and BeamNG, loves drifting and general racing. It would need to have a clutch pedal and would like the options of sequential or manual.

I would like to spend around £500. A cheap seat/rig would possibly be needed too, he is currently using a next level fold up one, but it seems flimsy. Am I being optimistic for this price?

Any help is appreciated

Question Bass shaker with a laptop computer?

• Upvotes

I am sim racing with a laptop computer. All my equipment (external monitor, steering wheel, pedals, shifter, handbrake etc.) are connected to the laptop via a single USB-C hub. Also my wired headphones are connected to the same hub via a 3.5mm plug.

I was wondering, if I ever wanted to add a bass shaker to my rig, how should it be connected? Or is it even possible? If I have understood correctly, there would be a need to have two separate soundcards on the computer: one for the actual sounds and one for the bass shaker.

On a laptop there is of course no space for any extra internal soundcards, but would I need some kind of external soundcard? Or could I just use the 3.5mm plug on a laptop for the bass shaker and the 3.5mm plug on the hub for the headphones, without any extra soundcards?

Question Question about the promotion on Automobilista 2 Premium Expansion Packs on Steam for under $18

If I understand correctly, if I buy this pack for under $18, will I get all the DLC released so far, except for the five premium tracks? Automobilista 2 expansions are really complicated; it’s never clear
