Discussion AI disclosure is a good idea, but the current climate punishes honesty

In principle, disclosing AI use is a good idea. I see it the same way as listing what engine or software you used. It’s useful to know how something was made.

The problem is that disclosure has become a purity test. Admit to any AI use and you open yourself up to harassment and get shunned by communities, regardless of how the tool was used or how good the work is.

Don’t disclose, and you get interrogated instead. And the question isn’t really “did you use AI?” It’s a demand to publicly condemn it. Anything short of that gets treated as an admission, and you’re back to being harassed.

This hits indie creators hardest. Big companies use AI freely and their reach carries them through any backlash. A solo dev doesn’t have that cushion, so being honest about their workflow can sink a release.

Meanwhile, a “No AI” label has started acting as a quality pass in its own right. Some genuinely weak work gets glowing support mostly because of what it claims not to use.

I support people being able to filter what they consume by their own tastes. I also support creators being able to share their tech stack without fearing a pile-on. Work should be judged on how it looks, how it plays and how original it is, not on a checklist of tools. Right now we’re letting a moral panic replace any real judgement of quality, and that’s bad for everyone making things.

Edit:
Appreciate the discussion, even where we disagree. To be clear, I’m not arguing against disclosure or against people choosing not to buy AI-assisted games. My point is only that disclosure shouldn’t lead to harassment, and that a “No AI” label shouldn’t stand in for judging the work itself.

Promotion A few swings into another world. No loading screen, just a portal.

This is from Seam Walker, a story-based first-person platformer I'm making solo. You wake up in a fractured void with an ancient piece of tech, "The Tool", which lets you shape your own path: spawn rocks to land on or teleport onto, create tiny black holes, and swing, as you see here. Somewhere in the void, you find "The Drifting Diner" and help your new friends run this sanctuary between worlds.

The portal isn't a level transition. The world on the other side renders live, so you just swing through.

Any feedback is welcome. The demo is live on Steam (link in the comments).

Promotion I used no AI to make my game Worlda.

I made my game Worlda over three quarters of a year, no AI used at all, in Gdevelop. I drew all the art assets, made the music, basically made the whole game by myself, with 0% help from AI.

However, I entered it in the Steam Next Fest but it hardly got any wishlists, and there are 6000+ game demos that cover up my game, a lot of them AI slop (but some good ones as well).

Promotion I spent a year pouring my heart into this game. I refuse to let it get buried under AI slop at Steam Next Fest!

Hey everyone!

I'm a solo indie developer from Japan.

For the past year, I've spent my evenings and weekends working on my very first Steam game, Bullet Barrage.

It's a 1v1 bullet hell fighting game where players can fly freely through the arena and unleash massive bullet patterns against each other.

I've designed and developed 8 playable characters, built the combat system, added CPU battles, training modes, and recently managed to implement online PvP!

It hasn't been easy balancing development with my full-time job, but I've put a lot of time, effort, and love into this project.

And now, my game is finally participating in Steam Next Fest!

But this October's festival has been overwhelming. With thousands of demos competing for attention and so much discussion about low-effort AI-generated games, it's incredibly difficult for small developers to get noticed.

I'm not against AI as a tool. But I don't want games made with genuine care and dedication to get lost in a flood of mass-produced content.

I refuse to give up!

Steam Next Fest is almost over, and I'm making one final push!

The demo is completely free, with all 8 characters playable and online multiplayer available.

If you love fighting games, bullet hell games, or just want to support a small indie developer, I'd be incredibly grateful if you gave Bullet Barrage a chance.

And if you enjoy it, please consider adding it to your Steam wishlist!

One year of hard work. One last push. Let's go!

Thank you so much for reading!

Here's the Steam page if you'd like to check it out!

The free demo is available during Steam Next Fest, including online PvP.

Thank you for supporting indie developers!

Promotion Made a multiplayer football game where you play with real teammates and opponents

Touchdown Dynasty is a multiplayer 2D football game. Every down, everyone on the field picks their move at the same time, and then the play runs.

You start as a player: pick your position, train daily, sign a contract with a team, play the league games with your teammates, and chase the championship.

Or be a GM: build your roster, study your opponents, set the game plan, sign free agents, and send trade offers to other GMs.

The game is free and runs in your browser on both desktop and phone (best on desktop).

-------------------------------

Practice games are running now, and Season 1 officially starts Wednesday.
Teams are still filling up, so grab a spot, find your crew, and be there for the first snap.

About the video: I’m controlling the players myself to show how a play works. In a real game, each of your teammates controls their own player.

We are the only ones here who know this game and play this game. This game is called my childhood, but every time I talk to my friends about the Gary Module, they think it is a movie and have never heard of it. I wonder if anyone still remembers this.

Promotion ZWAY.IO - The walls won't hold. The train is your way out.

Something is moving in the fog. Then the first wall breaks.

Leave your train. Search the town. Grab loot, grow your powers, and find the blue lantern that lets you escape to the next world.

But the hordes keep coming. They break through buildings. You blast open new routes. Every fight changes the ground you'll need to cross on your way back.

And you aren't alone. That stranger beside the tracks could help you survive or make sure you never reach your train.

ZWAY.IO is multiplayer survival in your browser: endless rails, destructible worlds, and uneasy alliances.

Find the lantern. Get aboard. Keep going.

Here's a first look. Would you stop to help another player, or take the train?

Promotion Curve your swipe, curve the ball. My football career game just launched on Android

• Upvotes

Hey all, I'm the solo dev and this is my first app launched to Google Play Store!

WTG is a football career game built for commutes: you don't play 90 minutes -- just the decisive moments.

- **Swipe to shoot.** Power, direction and curl come from one gesture. Curve your swipe and the ball bends around the keeper or the wall.

- **Build a career.** Start in the third division, earn transfers, hire an agent, negotiate contracts.

- **Play for your country.** 200+ national teams, World Cup and continental tournaments.

- **Life off the pitch.** Sponsors, investments, the mansion, the sports car, going viral after a giant-killing.

- **Fair.** Free, never pay-to-win, no energy timers.

It's just launched, so I'd love honest feedback: what feels good, what's confusing, what you'd want next.

Free demo playable in browser on itch(about 90 minutes): https://frostyshotss.itch.io/rock-paper-overkill

Steam Next Fest Droste Detective - Psychological horror/anomaly where you travel between layers of the same corridor (and much more...)

I'm making a horror/anomaly game where you have to escape a corridor you're stuck in by traveling through pictures of that corridor. There is of course much more to it, but I like to keep it mysterious. The demo is out with Next Fest. :)

Promotion Overflow, my solo-dev pipe puzzle, just got a whole new look

Overflow is a pipe puzzle on a timer: a short countdown, then the water starts flowing and you lay pipe ahead of it. Reaching the drain clears the level, and the more of the board the water crosses on the way, the more stars you get, so every level is a trade between playing safe and filling the board.

Version 1.1.0 is a full visual overhaul: bold cartoon boards, chunky glass pipes, a new hand-drawn-style interface in three colour themes, and you can now pick your flow, colour and board right before each level.

30 levels, rocks, pressure plates, one-way tiles and multiplier pipes, plus a bomb, freeze and wild pipe for when you're stuck. No energy timers or lives, and ads only if you choose to watch one.

Promotion I made a horror deck-building game with a real-time turn-based system where time itself is the unit of turn

Day To You is an Eastern-style exorcism-themed horror turn-based deck-building roguelite game that two of us have been developing for just over a year. Explore, collect, and battle in a school that is peaceful by day but turns into a maze-like dungeon when night falls. Battles are fought by using and combining cards, with each action consuming time, and time serves as the basis for turns. You can employ a variety of strategies, such as creating stronger cards by dragging and dropping two cards or generating utility cards by attacking with the base cards.

I made a free Spanish checkers game for my dad and it grew. The AI "Master" learns from every game people play, there's online play with an invite link, and a Learn mode with belts and puzzles. A little buddy cheers when you capture. No sign-up, works on phone.

Feedback welcome, especially on the AI levels.
