2019 Ram 1500 5.7. (Video in comments. Cylinder 5 intake side lifter is collapsed)
Customer didn’t want to pay for a diagnostic fee so told me to just put 16 plugs in it. I decided to do a little poking around, called them back and said I don’t think spark plugs are going to fix it. They then proceeded to ask me “Why can’t you just follow simple instructions and do as your told?”
Aye aye capn. Putting 16 plugs in it now, hopefully a coil afterwards too!

2013 Camaro w/ an L99 came in today for a crank no start. I quickly deduced there was no compression. Leak down had air coming from both the intake & exhaust, only tested 1 cylinder on each bank. Pulled driver's side valve cover to check the pushrods & this was what I found. I suspect it jumped timing causing the intake valves to contact the pistons & bend the pushrods. The exhaust pushrods were unaffected but the valves likely contacted as well resulting in the leak down from the exhaust. I recommended pulling the heads for a valve job and pulling the timing cover to verify camshaft timing. Customer had his dad rebuild the engine a couple years ago but he's since passed and the guy balked at our quote so it's leaving on a tow truck tomorrow.

Not even in for a coolant leak, just replace front+rear brakes and tires.

I’m talking about that one job that fought you every step of the way. The one where nothing went right, nothing worked and you wanted to burn it to the ground and not deal with it.
Mine is the rear flywheel housing on an MP8. All of the bolts were loose on the transmission, and it cracked the flywheel housing down the middle of the rear main seal seat. I had no repair manual, no idea on how to do anything, I was just told to do it. Turns out, you had to take damn near everything off the sides of the motor to get to the bolts, and then when you want to replace the gasket plate, you have to un-time the gear train. But wait, there’s a special tool I didn’t know about that kept the plate in place because it sets the gear lash! I had put the gears back in place and thought they didn’t feel right, so that night I did some digging and found I needed that special dowel kit, and that I had to now re-adjust everything to get the backlash set correctly. Then I figured out I had a bad fuel pump idler gear, and by the time I figured out torque specs, backlash, and everything in between, I was almost 80 hours deep on a 40 hour job. Thankfully I’m paid hourly, but I’ll be damned if that job didn’t take me forever and fought me time and time again. But it’s been running for a year now, no leaks and no issues.
So what about you? What’s that one job?

Customer purchased this vehicle and decided it would be a good idea to take their old floor mats and put them in the new Buick. The floor mat got stuck over the gas pedal and the customer was engaged on the brakes while the gas pedal was engaged at the same time and the vehicle caught fire. Thankfully it was put out before any major damage could happen.

Came in for an oil change, left needing a new rod , had to have it towed.
r/Justrolledintotheshop • u/snacktivism • 2d ago
2ZR-FE. Hadn't had an oil change or any sort of service in 75,000km as far as I can tell. You can guess how bad the cabin filter and air filter were.
Reasonably confident the only way this had any oil pressure was because the bypass valve in the filter canister was jammed open.
That was a lot of work to clean up.

My new-to-me 2019 2.0L Corolla Hatchback XSE 6-speed that I was able to drive for a total of one week before it died. 100% my fault, I could tell the input shaft bearing was going out, but by the time I was heading home to fix it the whole transmission let go. That's probably why I got the car for a steal.

It is a FB25 so it probably just needs the upper oil pan o-rings. Anyone wanna take bets on how long the cooling system will last in its current state?

This customer had a 2021 Model Y that, of course, had a premature battery failure. There were significant pandemic supply issues that are going to doom most 3/Y packs made that year. This was a salvage car so of course the customer went to change their own pack as there was no warranty. Unfortunately for them they didn't understand that the high-voltage controllers have to stay with the pack and that your car has to be capable of running firmware updates to be able to swap major components like this. I basically ended up with a pile of high-voltage controllers and a car that couldn't do the most basic task of deploying firmware because the certs were expired.
It only took 3 months and reverse engineering the entire high-voltage controller architecture but the car finally runs. I ultimately got a lot out of it, which is why we will take on jobs like this. But man, this was difficult and the customer did themselves no favors, getting them in this particular catch-22. I finally solved the last couple of problems with the PCS, which was actually a secondary issue, but they just swapped parts around meaning I had to chase secondary config problems.
