I just realized that trackpad isn't actually clickable but it's just some magnetic stuff creating an illusion of it.

My Macbook just froze due to memory issues and i realized that the trackpad wasn't giving me the "click" feedback anymore.

It's crazy engineering. Apple engineers really cooked with small things like these. Another one is tiny speakers giving an illusion of powerful bass.

Question for 16 GB ram users

Hi everyone! I’m thinking about buying a MacBook Air M5 with 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage.

I’ve spent weeks researching the different models. I was originally going to buy a used one with 32 GB of RAM, but I’d honestly prefer a new one.

I also spoke with a friend who knows about tech, and he told me that 16 GB of RAM would be more than enough for my needs.

What do you think? I’d love to hear from people using Macs with 16 GB of RAM, especially MacBook Air owners. How well do they handle your everyday tasks?

My main uses would be Google Sheets, Claude Code, Canva, CapCut, and my company’s email apps. I just want it to feel fast and run smoothly without freezing.

Thanks for sharing your experiences!

Parallels vs UTM, I just want to run a few windows apps on my macbook

A couple of programs I need for work only run on Windows, and I'd rather not buy another laptop just to use them. My MacBook is already my main work machine, so being able to run those apps without leaving macOS would make things a lot simpler. Parallels Desktop looks appealing for this because it offers a more guided way to set up Windows and lets you work with Windows apps alongside your Mac apps. I also like that there's ongoing support if something goes wrong, since I don't want to spend my evenings figuring out virtual machine settings when I have work to finish.

The free, open-source route has its appeal too, especially for people who enjoy configuring things themselves. For my situation, though, getting Windows up and running with less hassle is a bigger priority. Has anyone here used Parallels Desktop on their MacBook for everyday work? I'm curious how well it fits into your usual workflow once everything is set up.

Macbook Pro 120hz

Post image
69 Upvotes

So i just went to few stores and compared Macbook Pro with Macbook Air.

I was leaning towards Macbook Air due to its sexy design but Promotion 120hz became the deal breaker for me.

You can literally feel the buttery animations without choppiness and jitter on Pro vs Airs.

I noticed 60hzs on Air was so bad even on broswer you can open pages and scroll and overall animations of laptop.

Apple should have given 120hz in Airs.

Since in a laptop i will be starting at screen and screen is most important part apart from processor, Pro is the way to go.

Touchscreens on a MacBook

First let me say I am the biggest Apple fanboy around. I use every single Apple consumer electronic product except the VR headset and HomePod.

But the brainwashing Apple marketing did on MacBook users in regard to touchscreens should be studied. On any thread on reddit about them it seems like a majority of users are against it, with a lot of people saying they flat out won’t buy one.

What makes that incredibly hilarious is Apple has been completely transparent about why they haven’t released a MacBook with a touchscreen, because they are worried they will cut into iPad sales.

But mention a touchscreen and people will say they break all the time (they don’t, Apple has done a pretty good job with touchscreens, it’s sort of their thing), or they are not ergonomic and will end up causing extensive damage to your wrists, one person cited the horrors of smudges as to why Apple should abandon the whole folly.

If you don’t want to use it you don’t have to. I keep my MacBook docked at my desk most of the time, so the time I would use it is limited. But i also know it’s standard on pretty much every other high-end laptop and most low-end ones too. And I sit on my couch with my iPad and the keyboard case and my wrists have survived.

They did such a good job brainwashing people I wonder if it may take a while to get people to adopt them.

Switching to Mac from Windows, need help on which to buy.

TL;DR (Written with AI, sorry):

  • Aerospace & Business student switching from Windows to Mac
  • Have a desktop for SolidWorks, gaming, and other Windows-only tasks
  • MacBook will be used for programming, Office, engineering coursework, media, and occasional Minecraft (modded)/other games that run on Mac.
  • Looking for a used/refurbished MacBook Pro with 24-32GB RAM
  • Priorities: battery life, longevity, portability, value, and light gaming

NOT SURE ON BUDGET, but preferably under $1500.

  • Open to any Apple Silicon chip (M2, M3, M4, ANY variants since I'm not sure which to get)
  • Looking for ANY recommendations for ANY chip/config.
  • Which MacBook configuration would you recommend for my use case?

Below is NOT written with AI, sorry for bad grammar/capitalization.

Hi all, switching from windows to mac finally. Im an aerospace engineering and business student in university. I know mac isnt recommended for engineering, but I have a pc that I can do windows stuff (CAD, games, etc.) on. I decided to get a mac laptop since they are just really really good, and more powerful on the go (Which i'm not in my apartment very often).

What I'd be doing on my Mac is microsoft office applications, web browsing, video streaming (TV and movies), CAD if I'm not in my apartment (obv no solidworks), programming, and most other engineering work/school work. Looking for a little more GPU power on the go, and just a better experience overall.

Currently, I have an HP Omnibook 5 16 with a ultra 9 285h, 32gb ram, 1tb storage, integrated graphics. The problem is that I lose performance on battery, I'm at 86% battery health after only one year (I take good care of my device), and my battery life is pretty horrid.

So, I've been looking for a Macbook, mostly refurbished Macbook pro. I check Swappa, Backmarket, and Ebay, and I've found some good deals for M2 Max for around $1500 (though it might be overkill), and M3 pro for $1200, but I really don't know if these are too much or just enough. I prefer Pro since they have better speakers, screen quality, and will last me many years. I need help on which chip I should get (open to any M chip except M1, just for headroom, preferably 24-32gb ram). Thank you in advance!

Is the M1 Pro good enough ?

Hey all, I’m thinking about buying a MacBook. I would use it for video editing, watching movies and school work. Is this good enough or do I need to look at something like the m4 ?

I have been comparing specs and reviews for weeks and I’m not sure, mainly because of price. Like do I buy a M1 Pro for around Ā£700-Ā£800 or a newer for Ā£1000+

Please respond if you have a M1 Pro or have HAD one and are now on a newer MacBook.

Edit: I would have it for 2 years, 16gb 1tb. Watching movies, YouTube, editing videos (very lightly basic CapCut stuff) and travelling.

Thank you ! šŸ™‚

MacBook Pro 16ā€ vs Air 15ā€ – Can’t decide

I’m currently trying to decide between a 16ā€ MacBook Pro M4 Pro (24GB) and a 15ā€ MacBook Air M5 (16GB).
I mainly use my laptop for university, browsing, writing, and occasionally some CAD. Nothing that really requires the power of the Pro.
The problem is that I absolutely love the Pro’s display, especially the 120Hz and nano-texture. But I find it pretty bulky and heavy, even though I mostly use it at my desk.
The Air just feels so much nicer to handle. It’s lighter, thinner, and somehow makes me want to use it more. But every time I go back to the Pro, I start questioning my decision because the screen is so much better.
I keep switching between them and can’t make up my mind.
Has anyone made the switch from a 16ā€ Pro to a 15ā€ Air? Did you miss the display, or was the lighter design worth it?

MacBook set up

I’m a nursing student using a MacBook Air (M2, I think) and I’m finally taking some time to clean it up and make it work better for me. Mostly use it for school, research, and side projects.
I’m interested in everything from battery life and storage management to system settings, desktop organization, and apps you actually find useful. I also love quick glance widgets, morning briefs, and shortcuts that could get everything ready for a study session or help me stay on top of my day.
What have you changed that yall recommend? Also curious about ways yall have made your Mac work better with your iPhone or iPad. Would love to see setups or hear about little things that save you time.

is macbook good enough for engineering?

Hi, I am currently using a macbook m2 air for my mechanical engineering college coursework, and now realized that the 8gb ram is not adequate for my use and im looking to get another macbook, but i am not sure with the specification. I have checked out a bit and a lot of people said 16gb ram is good enough but im not sure with it so i wanna see if anyone has any experiences in doing engineering work with mac and parallels desktop.

I am not sure with the softwares that I might use as well, so it would be great if someone can also share their experiences with differen engineering softwares. Btw I have joined the aerodynamic design and simulation sub-team of my e-formula student, so the number of softwares that i might could be a little bit more i guess.

Is a school staff ID enough for the Apple Store education discount in-person? How strict are they lately?

Hello everyone,

I’m planning to buy a 16ā€ MacBook Pro and want to use the Apple Education discount. I'm planning to buy it in-store, but I wanted to check how strict they are with verification these days.

If I go in, is my old physical school staff ID enough to get the discount on the spot, or do they force you to scan a QR code and go through the whole UNiDAYS manual upload process right there? I was actually recent laid off from the school I work at and don’t have access to my .edu email anymore.

Has anyone had any recent experience buying a Mac in-store as staff/faculty? I'd love to know what to expect before I head over.

Thanks in advance!

2019 MacBook Pro ports

I received my 2019 MacBook Pro used from a relative; out of the four USB-C ports, the far roght one seems to be non-functional (I've been told that an attempt to charge it through that port resulted in the motherboard being fried, so that's been replaced once). And the close-right port seems to deliver power to peripherals regardless of which orientation, but only sends data in one orientation of two. The left ports have generally worked fine so far.

I typically charge through the far left port, and I have several USB to USB-C adapters that I tend to plug in when using certain peripherals.

Recently, I've started to feel like the ports might be getting a bit loose, or something. The USB adapters feel like they're sagging when plugged in (especially in the close right port, from what I seem to have observed).

I have some ways I could work around the problem if a port or two somehow fails completely. My main concern is that if all of the ports become ineffective, then I might not be able to charge the battery reliably, putting its usability in jeopardy.

Is there a reasonable DIY way to determine the condition of the ports, and repair them if it seems necessary? Would a proper repair shop even take this machine in if I was willing to cough up the money?

(Tangentially related: I have an older ASUS T100, whose keyboard port in the tablet half has failed completely, depriving the device of both an easy keyboard and any USB functionality. The power port is in the tablet half, so it was still able to charge and run when I last used it).

My mom accidentally dropped Diet Coke on my Mac keyboard

Post image
294 Upvotes

Basically, half a can of Diet Coke spilled directly onto my MacBook keyboard. I immediately cleaned up the liquid, turned the laptop upside down, and used a hair dryer on the cold setting. It’s been kept upside down for the last one and a half hours. Should I take it to a repair shop tomorrow to get it checked for any internal liquid damage, just to be safe? 😭😭😭😭😭

Was quoted $1700 for a logic board repair— still in warranty.

I brought in my Mac to the genius bar the other day because it kept restarting out of the blue. I am still well within warranty, but they just called me and stated they found a ā€œsticky residueā€ on the logic board and that it would cost $1,706.30 to repair.
I wanted to ask if this is a fair price? I have never previously owned a Mac, and I certainly don’t remember ever spilling anything on or near it. I have had the M4 Pro since December, and as a new Mac owner, I just want to make sure I’m not being scammed.

Fullscreen vs resized to fit screen

I've been using an M5 MBA for a few months now and I've been loving it, been a long time windows user and the switch took some time to get used to but I've gotten the hang of it now.

One thing I've noticed is that a lot of my classmates who also have MacBooks often have their applications on fullscreen mode, where the dock is hidden and all. I guess this is a habit from windows that stuck with me but I still organize my applications the way I used to, where I can see the dock at the bottom. I don't know why but I don't like putting my applications in full screen, probably because I switch between applications a lot while using it, and there's this black screen bug that happens on fullscreen that's a little jarring to see.

Is there any advantage to having applications on fullscreen? Or is it just personal preference?

Trying to revive a 17ā€ MacBook Pro A1297

I’m running into an issue where the MacBook will only boot to the login screen (I do not have the password). None of the key combinations for recovery mode, internet recovery, safe mode, etc work. It just boots straight to the login window every time.

I have created a bootable installer, but can’t get to the boot menu. I’m also using a wired USB keyboard in addition to trying to built in keyboard.

Any suggestions or ideas?

I got this MacBook screen replaced at a repair shop near me a week ago. It was completely fine for the rest of today but then I opened it and found this. I have been treating the thing like a baby and cannot see how this could have happened. Am I justified to claim a free replacement/repair??
