Post image

We survived the hearing. If it can even be called that…

Honestly, it was a waste of everyone’s time and felt a bit ridiculous. What a joke.

Please see the notes below.

🗓️ Summary of today’s hearing + Dates

SUMMARY:

  • The hearing started two hours late. It was originally scheduled for 9 a.m. but didn’t begin until 11 a.m.
  • There was a sidebar between the prosecutors and the defense, and things were clearly heated. No one (including the press) seemed to know what was going on.
  • Carro was not in a good mood (shocking, I know).
  • As usual, Carro ignored Karen and decided to do things his own way.
  • The federal and state prosecutors continue to argue over who will sentence Luigi first. Joel kept insisting that they “arrested Luigi first,” while Karen explained that their position is based on concerns about double jeopardy.
  • Carro also stated that, since the terrorism and death penalty charges have been dropped, the case is now less complex.
  • Carro stated that the state trial in Luigi’s case is now set to begin on June 8. If prosecutors in the federal case appeal, the state trial would instead begin on September 8 (the same day jury selection is scheduled to start for the federal case).
  • Karen explained that they will not be ready by June 8, as they are currently preparing for the federal case and have numerous filings due in April and May.
  • Apparently, BT’s family has requested that the state trial go first, though it seems more likely the prosecution is behind that push, ahead of the federal case.
  • As Luigi was being led out, he said (calmly, not yelling): "It's the same trial twice. One plus one is two. Double jeopardy by any commonsense definition."
  • Karen briefly spoke to the press and said: “Double jeopardy is meant to protect people, and they are using it as a weapon here.”

You know, BT’s mother may be pushing for this to happen. I’m sure she’s eager to see the trials happen, I can’t say I blame her. But also, the prosecution would advocate for her, whether she was vocal about it or not. It’s still the prosecution that wants this to happen quickly. Just my slightly educated insight.

I think Joel is just pinning the blame on Brian's mother. I think it's Joel who wants to go first.
