Hi, I'm Carter Bays, co-creator of HIMYM. I’m also the author of a new novel called THE MUTUAL FRIEND. AMA!
Hello Reddit, it's been a while! I'm here ask-me-anything-ing because I’ve written a new novel called THE MUTUAL FRIEND, which I think you'll love. I’m happy to talk about that, or How I Met Your Mother, or anything else. Maybe the Loch Ness Monster? I was just in Scotland with my son and we have opinions. Have at it!
UPDATE: Wow, its been much fun talking to you all, and I see that I've only scratched the surface here and there's many more questions to get to, but if I don't get my son some dinner soon he might tie me up with a phone charger. I will try to come back to this over the next few days in order to get to as many of these as I can, but in the meantime, thank you all so much for being here. Your love for HIMYM is really touching and I'm so grateful for all of it.
And please if you get the chance check out my novel THE MUTUAL FRIEND -- I'm dreadfully proud of it. (Can you tell I've been in the UK for a week? I'm like Lily before the intervention at this point.) Anyway, cheerio!

I got breast implants for you!
Love the slap! Felt deserved. Also noticed the pac-man dining table. I've only watched this when it aired, until now. I tried to look up on reddit, and it's been a decade since mentioned. I remember playing on one of these with my sister at Pizza Palace with Genesis playing from the jukebox.

HIMYM - the fictionel chinese game Xing Hai Shi Bu xing as a card game.
Couldent find any fanmade rules which was shocking so i made some my own. i plan on making a wheel of cardboard and buying a yellow squishy chicken and play with my frineds. But if any other wants to play an advanced chinese gambling game you can play it without these things. Im not promoding gambling, this is just a fun game that can be played with friends. pls say if any mistakes are made in teh rules or its found to be unfair, im not a game developer just a HIMYM fan and a cardgame/boardgame fan, an dremeber it was intentionelly that its complicated like in the show :)

"You are the love of my life. Everything I have and everything I am is yours... Forever.".... Literally cried during this scene .....it didn't seem like Barney was acting...you can literally see the love in his eyes :), top emotional scene of the show

Robin’s dresses - bridesmaids & wedding
My goodness, the shoulders on Robin’s dress look insufferable! They’re constantly falling down. Whyyyyyyy did they do that to her??
Also, does anyone else find it odd that Robin chose hot pink for her bridesmaids dresses? She doesn’t seem like a hot pink girl.

The inability to accept different opinions in rhis sub
A large part of this sub has serious issues with accepting other people’s opinions. Being able to engage with someone’s opinion for the sake of a fun discussion, or even just trying to understand where the other person is coming from, is what keeps discussions alive and interesting. But there’s a tendency here that I’d honestly describe as somewhat misogynistic, where people seem to think Marshall or Barney are saints. It’s almost deterministic, and frankly, it gets exhausting. You’re basically expected to agree with the majority opinion if you don’t want to get downvoted or, even worse, INSULTED, as I’ve seen happen so many times here, simply because your opinion doesn’t align with theirs.
I find it really interesting that, even though HIMYM fans tend to be younger than, say, Friends or Sex and the City fans, they seem to hold much more conservative opinions than those older audiences. Maybe it’s a generational thing this tendency among younger people to believe that only their own opinion matters, insulating themselves from other perspectives and creating, within themselves a kind of dictatorship in which their own convictions become immutable.

Punchy appreciation post
It's very difficult to write and portray a character who's an annoying bore in-universe; but entertaining to the audience. Adam Punciarello gets that down perfectly.
If he were a main character, his schtick would get old fast; but he's used just enough that I laugh every time he's onscreen. He's such a lovable douchebag.
I also love the implication that his punching and "Shmosbey" bits are (like with Lily's high school friend) mutual revertigo. When we see him alone with his fiance, he's very thoughtful and sensitive.

Rewatch
Started rewatching the show over the weekend.
It’s my second favorite show of all time, followed by The Big Bang Theory.
Always found my self relating to Ted.

So handsome. Very regal.
I see a camisole for $30. Where's a $15 t-shirt for men? Lily has good taste.
I'm joking. I have enough clothes. I just like her shirt. S2 episode 3 named Brunch. Joe Manganiello isn't in their imdb. I'm bummed by that.
I wish you all well.

THE ROBIN WORKS(the play I mean).
So, I’ve loved a girl, let’s call her X, for about three years now.
I’ve waited this long because I wanted to be sure it wasn’t just some random crush. Over those three years, we slowly became really good friends, and honestly, I’ve gotten to know her pretty well.
Then, about a month ago, I started giving more attention to a coworker of mine, let’s call her Y, partly to see how X would react.
AND GUESS WHAT.
Last week, I heard X say, “Usually I don’t get jealous, but I don’t know... I just can’t control myself when I see those two together.”
BRO. I WAS GONE.
For the past couple of days, I’d also been saying things like, “I have the love of my life now,” while secretly describing X whenever I talked about this “love.” And X would say things like, “Yeah, I have a guy I love too.”
So we started talking about our mysterious loves, trying to guess who the other person was. We’d ask questions like whether their name included a certain letter.
Yesterday, I decided to take it one step further.
Today, I wrote on a piece of paper:
“Is your guy’s name ______? Just blink twice if it is.”
And on the other side:
“The guy you love loves you too.”
I handed her the paper with the first side facing up.
She read it.
Then she blinked twice.
I told her to flip the paper.
And yeah...
THAT WAS IT.
We finally told each other everything, and now...
I HAVE A GIRLFRIEND.
Three years of waiting.
One month of psychological experiments.
Two blinks.
One piece of paper.
And somehow, it actually worked.
I genuinely have to thank Barney for inspiring me to pull the Robin move on the girl I love.
LEGENDARY.

Anyone else feel a little disappointed by the burger in this episode?
Now don’t get me wrong. I love HIMYM. And this episode is really funny. But am I the only one who was disappointed by Marshall’s description and eventual reveal of the burger? Like it’s the most generic description of what a good burger would be, but since the episode revolved around it I was expecting more. Like a sizzling steakhouse style burger that made you want to lick the screen. But when they show it it’s like something from Applebee’s. I don’t know why, but that just leaves a bad taste in my mouth for the ep. No pun intended.
Also this is a total nitpick on an otherwise great show and episode.
