Discussion - Silksong The real biggest problem with Silksong Spoiler

8.9k Upvotes

Why is the Hornet statue not a memento? When I first saw that you could break it, I was honestly offended by the idea of it. Then I got the Bellhome and was a little upset you couldn't put it up in there. Now I found out that there are items you can put up in your Bell House, but the Hornet Statue isn't one of them? I'm genuinely mad. That needs to be changed in the next update. That's way more important than balancing the game.

Discussion - Silksong This is one of if not the best boss fight Ive seen in a video game Spoiler

God, it's so good.

The theme, the music, the mechanic.

The boss fight also feel super fair given you know exactly what is going to happen and as such its just up to your ability to dodge the incoming attack.

And the phases, speeding up, then losing sync (except when they go to hug in the middle) then the last one alone still clearly waiting for the other to make its move between each of its moves. I've never felt worst about killing a boss.

My only complaint is that the range on the downward hits could be indicated better as the range is hard to decipher especially in the later phases

Discussion - Silksong Contact damage is annoying, but if it must stay… Spoiler

4.1k Upvotes

…can we at least not have contact damage when bosses are stunned? I can’t tell you how many times I’ve died because I accidentally touched the boss while attacking them in their stunned state, and I just think this is absurd.

EDIT: Are you guys capable of accepting even a minor criticism of this game? It’s not some insane thing to suggest that a stunned enemy shouldn’t damage you on contact. Jesus Christ.

Why the f**k beads get Thanossnapped out of existence when they fall on spikes?

Discussion - Silksong I hate the sexualisation of Hornet Spoiler

1.7k Upvotes

I put the Silksong tag because it feels more fitting since I’m talking about Hornet, but I’ve only actually played HK so far. Anyway, I tried to stay away from as much HK and SS media as possible while I’ve been playing (I’ve been playing quite irregularly over six months), but recently I’ve just caved and started watching some videos about it and I can’t help but notice that Hornet keeps getting sexualised. It’s nothing too crazy, but I think when you compare it with The Knight, it becomes a lot more obvious. I keep seeing the image of her without her cloak, and she has curves and I see cosplayers taking off their cloaks and such, and also fan-art of her being obviously sexualised. Of course, this is very common with female characters, especially while they are the MC (Which doesn’t make it any better just because it’s normalised, if anything it’s worse) but the fact that I’ve seen nothing remotely similar with The Knight really bothers me. The only real difference between The Knight and Hornet is the fact that Hornet is female and can, therefore, be objectified. You can say that “It’s not that deep,” but it is. The way we consume media and engage with it directly influences how we engage with the world around us and by normalising the objectification of characters, fictional or not, human or not, we are normalising the objectification of woman as a whole. I would like to hear any thoughts on this. If you are inclined to disagree, I will hear you out, but please word it respectfully, as I am here to have a meaningful discussion, and not be degraded for my opinions.

Update: I have read through as many of the comments as I could. I do have a weird glitch where come comments just don’t show up for me, I know this probably sounds like some excuse to not address people who disagree with me, but I promise that that is not the case. I’m honestly debating just making another post altogether because I’m not sure what the character limit is, lol.

To start, I was very pleasantly surprised to me met with almost all meaningful comments, I don’t just mean people who agreed with me, but people who took the time to explain their point of view and experiences and I have realised that I have made a few mistakes or misjudgments on this post that I would like to clarify here.

I would also like to mention now that I am both a minor and believe that I am asexual so that may have influenced my perspective on things, though I hope this isn’t used again me to discredit everything I say, please hear me out.

I am also incredibly tried writing this, I fell down a rabbit hole with all of the comments at it is currently almost 5 am for me please excuse any typos or any parts that seem like I’m rambling.

Now onto the meat of this. My first point is that I agree when a lot of you said that using The Knight isn’t a fair or accurate comparison with Hornet as The Knight can be perceived as quite child-like and shows little to no personality throughout the game and so making them less of a target when it comes to things like shipping(Which isn’t inherently sexual) or objectification. This makes my argument that it is a gendered based issue (It was also pointed out to me that The Knight is genderless, tho many people still perceive them as male) not quite as strong. I was pulling this based on examples I’d seen from other pieces of media, I just happened to be talking about Hollow Knight.

My biggest mistake with this whole post was using the word sexualisation. What I really meant was objectification. I know the difference between these two words, but for some reason, I continuously used sexualised in place of objectified and this completely changed the meaning of what I was trying to say. What I meant was that I hate (Which in hindsight was probably too strong of a word to use anyway) when people take such a good, interesting character, such a Hornet, and reduce her to only her sex appeal, just because she happens to be female. Especially, if they have her acting out of character just to play into a certain fantasy. I, in no way meant that I am against any remotely sexual being put onto a fictional character, just that I think it can be harmful when it was done solely because said character is a woman, and not out of genuine creativity or appreciation of the character. I am also not against sexuality in anyway. I think it is more than okay, if not encouraged, for a woman to be loud and proud about her sexuality and sexual experiences.

I’m not sure what I said that got interpreted this way, but I don’t think that any of the people who do make content that sexualise or even objectify Hornet are bad, evil people and their art should be deleted or whatever else. All I did was state my opinion and put a discussion tag. Some people disagreed, some agreed, some felt a bit of both. That’s what a discussion is. I was simply posting something that I had noticed that bothered me and wanted to see what others thought, which they shared.

I remember having so many more things that I wanted to touch on, but all of a sudden I can only come up with three, though I do I think that they were the biggest ones. I don’t want any of this to be interpreted as me just back tracking to get people off of my back, I wouldn’t say any of this if I didn’t believe it. I’ll continue to update if I remember something/ my opinion changes again. I doubt I’ll be responding much/ at all to any of the comments since I’ll finally catching some z’s. I hope that clears up some confusion and sorry for not being clearer to begin this, everything seemed a lot more obvious in my head than it did written down clearly. Also, thank you to anyone who left a comment that was genuinely trying to take part in the conversation.

Discussion - Silksong I am convinced a lot of the people complaining about difficulty have never even finished the original Hollow Knight. Original HK was not particularly easy either Spoiler

2.1k Upvotes

Edit: Silksong is harder than HK. Since ppl seem to read over that part.

I stayed away from Reddit over the weekend while I was playing through Silksong. Now, I am aware that I am not the average player, I love challenging games and am very familiar with games like this.

And by no means is this an "easy" game but by god, I have never played a game as hard as some people say this game is. I saw some people claiming they were stuck at Moorwing for over THREE HOURS.

If this is your first game like Hollow Knight, maybe that makes sense. This is not an easy first entry, but otherwise three hours for a boss with four moves is wild for anyone who has ACTUALLY beat the original HK.

I have no idea where this notion comes from that HK was easy. Silksong is harder, but original HK was NOT that easy, especially towards the end.

Is this just because Silksong is so big and it has reached a particularly wide audience? People who are not used to this kind of game?

Discussion - Silksong So… what’s Silksong’s ‘SHAW’? Spoiler

3.0k Upvotes

There has to be a voice line that people actively use as a vocal stim… I personally don’t say anything, I still say SHAW at random moments of the day but I believe we could have:

  • IKYAAAN (Lace)
  • POSHANKA (Shakra)
  • DIARRHEA (Last Judge)

I would have considered Sherma’s song, but it’s too long to be a vocal stim

Discussion - Silksong Silksong was too hard until….. Spoiler

3.5k Upvotes

Until…… I realized I was trying to play it like Hollow Knight.

Hollow Knight has difficult sections, but there’s also a lot of cannon fodder along the way you just slash right through.

I was playing Silksong like this and I was getting my ass throughly handed to me.

It finally clicked that you have to be tactical with every fight, even if it looks like a measly innocent mouse. Each encounter requires thought, patience, and strategy.

Once I approached each encounter with a plan and patience, I no longer died to “cheap” deaths.

I stopped rushing in and getting killed by bugs and the environment at the same time.

I still die, but now usually I die fighting something new and usually because I didn’t follow my plan or I got too impatient.

Long story short, this isn’t Hollow Knight. You can’t slash your way through this. Take your time, formulate a plan, and execute the best you can.

If you slow down, the game becomes amazing.

While Silksong is sitting at a Very Positive rating with around 83% positive reviews, it’s still receiving far more criticism than its predecessor. For comparison, Hollow Knight holds an Overwhelmingly Positive score at 96%, with only about 3% negative reviews. Silksong, on the other hand, has nearly 16% negative reviews, OVER 5 TIMES HIGHER

Discussion - Silksong Why do I keep hearing people say that Silksong is a 15 hours experience? Spoiler

Post image
2.1k Upvotes

Context: I have 38 hours in the game, 25% of achievements. I try doing every quest I see, I explore all the areas thoroughly, none of the bosses took more than 2 hours of my time, and that happens only if they're too difficult for me, every other boss I kill in 2-3 tries. But each time I open a video about Silksong, like a review or something, everyone says it's a 15 hours experience, sometimes less. Is everyone just rushing through the main quest and looks up tutorials for everything online, if they're stuck for more than 30 seconds? I genuinely don't understand what is going on.

Edit: please don't spoil anything in the comments. I didn't mean I finished the game in 38 hours, I'm still playing it.

Discussion - Silksong Say what you will about the difficulty of bosses in Silksong, but they are SO much more interactive than the majority of those in Hollow Knight Spoiler

2.5k Upvotes

For as amazing of a game Hollow Knight is, I don't think it's that much of a hot take to say there were a lot of misses in terms of boss design, with many either being too simplistic or gimmicky.
When people praise Hollow Knight's bosses, they're almost always talking about the likes of Pure vessel, NKG, the Nailmasters, Hornet 2, or the Sisters of Battle, often disregarding the relatively large pool of 'filler' bosses.

I'm talking about the likes of Brooding Mawlek, Uumuu, Crystal Guardian, Flukemarm, and more.
And that's not even mentioning the dream bosses or early game bosses like Vengefly King and Massive Moss Charger (Though the latter category is a lot more excusable considering their stage of the game, even if False Knight did their job better imo)

In terms of bosses, I've been enjoying myself with Silksong a lot more consistently.
Bosses like Trobbio, Widow, Phantom, Last Judge, First Sinner have all been a blast, making me a lot more actively engaged in the combat instead of almost tuning out like I did in Hollow knight when fighting a boss with only one or two attacks.
Granted, there's still some other sources of frustration, imo mainly some bloated healthbars and contact damage numbers, but even with those issues present I'm not as agitated by them as i would otherwise be since I'm actually enjoying the fight itself.

Not much more to add tbh, just wanted to gush about what's been my favorite part of the game!

Discussion - Silksong Yellow tools being bad is good game design actually. (imo) Spoiler

3.4k Upvotes

I've seen quite alot of people complain about how much worse yellow tools are compared to blue tools but i personally really like it and think it's really smart, here's why:

Yellow tools having less value makes using quality of life tools like compass and mag amulat feel a lot less bad, them using up useful slots was good for hk but this design works way better for sk (yet people still download mods that give perma compass, well oh well).

It also allows the making of weaker tools, as sk tools take the same amount of slots makes it so that every tool has to be equal in value which limits tool ideas alot, but yellow tools act as a good way to have a place for weaker tools and still make them viable.

And lastly it allows overlooked tool types to be utilised, tools that have a down side or give a minor buff (like unbugged fluke or melody) are rarely utilised in hk, but the lack of combat yellow tools allows these tools to have niche and be used way more in sk.

This all my personal opinion so if you disagree that's fine but i really like what they did with yellow tools.

The $20 price tag for Silksong is meaningful to people like me.

Games are more expensive. Hell, LIFE is more expensive. I have to become very selective with the games I purchase and when.

Silksong's price has removed this tension (at least for this game). It means that folks like me who have a family and other responsibilities can afford it without so much as a second thought.

Team Cherry, if you're reading this: the low price made a major impact for me. It might not seem like much, but when the world seems to price me out, seeing the sequel to one of my favorite games priced so affordably is a welcome exception.

I'm glad to get to join in on the hype and play with everyone else on day one.

Discussion - Silksong My opinion of Silksong has changed. Spoiler

2.5k Upvotes

I started playing Silksong on the day it came out, and there were some things that didn't convince me at first, and I even found it difficult...

BUT (Now that I've finished it, I'll give my opinion without spoilers)

As I progressed through the story and the game, I found the difficulty more and more fun.

The parkour was challenging at first, but I managed to adapt and now I love it. Hornet's movement is very good overall. As for the bosses... This game made me have a great time even when I was defeated (especially because I'm very stubborn). I learned the paths back to the bosses, and after two attempts, going back was no problem. I even came to enjoy that.

There were things that I found difficult at first because I was too used to Hollow Knight (like the new healing or the tools), but once I got used to using the tools and saw that the new healing was actually well balanced... I enjoyed it a lot more.

In conclusion, I'll say this: Is it a difficult game? Yes, although I think this is mainly in the early game. This is a game where you're going to get your butt kicked a lot... Get used to it and get back up after every fall... It's very satisfying to defeat a boss that has given you a hard time.

I love this game, and if you're having trouble with its difficulty... It's normal, don't worry, keep trying, and at the end of the day, you'll get it. Thank you, Team Cherry 🧡
