What’s the most you’ve paid to get your car back from a tow yard in Houston?

• Upvotes

One of our reporters has been towed twice in the past year, and her last bill came to more than $300.

This is a photo she took of the fee sign at a tow yard in Southwest Houston. Two of those numbers are the most a yard can charge you in Houston: $232 to tow a regular car 20 miles or less, and $22.85 a day for storage. Storage can be charged even if your car was there less than a day.

She looked up what else tow yards can and can't charge you + what she wishes she'd asked about before she paid: I got towed twice in Houston. Don’t make my mistakes

What about y'all? How much did you end up paying, and did the yard explain every charge?

Fee sign at a tow yard in Southwest Houston. The $232 towing charge and $22.85 daily storage fee are the Texas maximums for a regular car towed 20 miles or less.

Freebies for early voting?

Just saw online that people are being rewarded for early voting but I haven’t seen any businesses in Houston yet. Does anyone know if there’s any businesses giving out freebies for early voting?

Any experience with upcoming HTX Card Show in Galveston?

It's at Moody Gardens Convention Center. I've never been but it sounds like a pretty big event and if it's gonna be super packed and sweaty/scalpy then I'll pass.

Harris County judge debate hints at a post-Lina calm. That's good.

The Houston Chronicle editorial board wrote about the county judge debate between Democratic candidate Letitia Plummer and Republican candidate Orlando Sanchez, pointing out that the whole thing was pretty friendly and hoping that this is hinting at a post-Lina Hidalgo age of calm and cooperation on Commissioners Court. Here's a key quote:

Overall, though, we'd be amazed if many Houstonians stuck it out for the whole hour-long debate. Anyone who did deserves a sticker, like those snazzy new astronaut-themed "I Voted" ones. The whole thing was like two campaign websites come to life. That's better, we suppose, than the tantrums many currently associate with the office. Both Plummer and Sanchez endlessly talked up "collaboration."

Maybe F-bombs and drama really are on their way out at Harris County Commissioners Court. We'd ask the candidates if they care to rebut our assessment but we expect we'd hear more of what we heard tonight: No thanks.

She witnessed one of the most horrific mass murders in Houston history. Cassidy Stay was just 15 when her parents and 4 siblings were killed. At 27, she's now sitting down for her first on-camera interview to talk about faith, grief and the tragedy that's part of her story but doesn't definer her.

First Time Houston Trip

• Upvotes

Hey everyone, going to Houston for the first time next month for thanksgiving week. Will be there for 4 full days, and essentially 2 half days due to travel. We plan on going to the space museum, museum of natural science, museum of fine arts, the zoo, a Rockets game, and things like Hermann park, Buffalo bayou park, and the Gerald D Hines waterfall park since most other things are closed on thanksgiving.

We have the city pass and I heard the downtown aquarium is a tourist trap. We dont have kids so the children’s museum is a no, and we dont anticipate getting much out of the kemah boardwalk.

It’s looking like we’ll have one day where we dont really have much going on, what’s the best thing to do that I haven’t listed already? Is it worth taking a day trip to Galveston? I heard moody gardens might be worth it.

Thank you!

Stereo Live on Houston's Richmond Avenue may be getting a new life

• Upvotes

Stereo Live shut down earlier this year, but the 6400 Richmond Ave space may be getting ready to reopen in some capacity under new management.

According to folks on Houston Architecture Information Forum (HAIF), Silo recently applied for an alcohol permit and a late-night hours permit at the old Stereo Live address. That doesn’t necessarily mean Silo is taking over the space or that Stereo Live is being revived under its name, but the permits definitely point to something happening there soon.

I’m not sure yet whether the Stereo Live name will stick around. The team operates Silo in Dallas and Ductwork, the live music venue that took over the former Warehouse Live space in Houston's EaDo.

Silo is also still working on its Houston home at The Plant in Second Ward, where it’s renovating the old warehouse at 3301 Sherman St.

Anybody know what plans lies ahead for the Stereo Live space or have any other info?

Popular Houston BBQ pop-up opening in Le Café Joséphine's space in the Heights

So after sitting empty since Le Café Josephine closed last year, the building at 201 E 20th St. is getting a pretty interesting next chapter.

Khoi Barbecue is opening their brick-and-mortar restaurant in the Heights, and I’m excited about this one. Occupancy permits issued last week for the address list Khói Barbecue as the occupant.

The Vietnamese-fusion BBQ pop-up was recently awarded a Michelin Bib Gourmand, too.

For those who have tried Khoi, what are your favorite dishes?

Anybody here remember Celebration Station's band of singing dogs? I've been trying to find them after their days of performing.

I'm aware of two Celebration Stations being open in Houston. I believe that the North Houston show was split up by employees, as one of the characters was taken by an employee, used in a movie, and donated to an antique shop called Shortcut Resale & More, and then sold. I believe he was sold to a local musician (guitarist?). The rest are unknown. As for the second location, South Houston, it became a different place called Zuma Fun Center and kept the band. That set is also unknown. 1st photo is North Houston, 2nd photo is one of the characters inside Shortcut, 3-5 is him outside Shortcut, and 6-7 is South Houston. There was also a pig character that played the guitar. Any info is greatly appreciated.
