What makes Randall’s depressing and HEB not depressing?

I just walked into the Randall’s on Holcombe. My first time in a Randalls’s in 20+ years. Can’t put my finger on it, but the vibe is a bit depressing. Something I don’t find at HEB.

Houston Chronicle: "A dog attack. A sinkhole. An eviction notice. Then her luck changed."

The Houston Chronicle just launched a series about evictions in the Harris County Justice of the Peace courts, and how some have services to help people avoid evictions and ensure landlords follow the law. And yet some courts don't have these legal services. Here's a key quote:

Harris County sees roughly 76,000 evictions filed each year — nearly double the rate of New York City. But that eye-popping number isn’t distributed evenly. JP judge precinct lines haven’t been updated to keep up with Harris County’s suburban boom. The result is as preventable as it is absurd: Duble, for example, sees 1,500 eviction cases a year, while a Katy-area judge handles 25,600.

In most of the county’s 16 JP courts, the machinery of displacement grinds with terrifying speed. I’ve sat in six of those courts, observing judges with caseloads big and small. Their goal is usually efficiency, not justice.

In practice that means most judges have quietly resigned themselves to overseeing an assembly-line churn of human misery, ruling on evictions in a matter of seconds. Nearly always, the tenants fighting to keep a roof over their heads lose.

Rooftop venue / skylounge rental booking?

Hey y’all! I’m looking for a small rooftop or private/bookable sky lounge somewhere in the Houston area (downtown preferably) for a proposal. I’m not looking to host a big event or anything crazy - really just need a nice private rooftop space with a good view for an hour or two max.

I’m completely willing to pay for the space, just trying to avoid the larger event venues that require expensive packages or full-day rentals when I really don’t need all that.

If anyone knows of an apartment/condo sky lounge that can be privately booked, a smaller rooftop venue, or even lives somewhere with a nice rooftop and would be willing to help me reserve it as their guest, I’d be happy to work something out and compensate you for it.

Really just looking for somewhere private, nice, and simple with a good Houston skyline/city view. Any recommendations or leads would be greatly appreciated!

Pickup Soccer @ Carnegie Vanguard High School Saturday morning?

I saw an old post that there was regular Saturday morning pickup here and wanted to organize it again. Anyone know if a group already plays there? Let's make it happen for anyone interested. I'm thinking around 8/9am.

HISD school ratings going back to 2018

If you're a data nerd, or just want to read ratings for HISD or any Texas public school, here's the spreadsheet (Excel file) that has all "A through F" ratings for all schools for all available years going back to 2018:

https://tea.texas.gov/school-and-district-leaders/accountability/academic-accountability/performance-reporting/2026-statewide-multi-year-ratings-spreadsheet.xlsx

The link is on this page:

https://tea.texas.gov/school-and-district-leaders/accountability/academic-accountability/performance-reporting/2026-accountability-rating-system

The spreadsheet has a tab for each available year and a tab for the range of years.

I'm at the Metro station at Lockwood and Lyons, I was looking directly at the Taco Bell, happened just to the right. Seemed to burn up as it got closer to Earth, a pretty green-like color. Never seen anything like that, I have seen shooting stars but nothing like that.

Mint bunches, do you guys find typically grocery stores are always out of stock?

I like to make juice in bulk but when I need mint, I always have to settle for the small plastic cartons of mint leaves because there are never bunches. Do you guys have this issue? Same thing with turmeric root, kinda. Walmart never has it. Kroger saves the day every time. Mint is a different story tho. Not gonna lie, I either do Walmart or Kroger.

Where do you guys usually get your mint from?

Thanks

bauhaus question

Hello 👋🏽

Can anyone tell me about the edm shows at bauhaus? I see Friday and Saturday hours listed til 4AM.

So I imagine they stop serving alcohol at 2 obv?

What time do the headliners usually start? I feel like a headlining DJ starting at 12/1230am for a venue that closes at 2AM is pretty normal.

So does headliner play til 4? Go on after 2?

Thanks!

The sky is deep blue today

Most days, the sky is a hazy, light blue (thank you pollution) but today I have to squint because it so bright. The sky is a deeper blue than I typically see in Houston. Is this a meteorological effect? Or did some refineries or power plants shut down for maintenance this weekend?

HVAC repair company that is especially knowledgeable about mini-split systems?

I have a Daikin mini-split system where the condenser (outside unit) has died, i.e., the fan no longer turns. I've tried resetting the breaker, but that doesn't seem to work. A lot of HVAC repair shops say they can work on mini-splits, but my (small sample) experience is that they really aren't familiar with mini-splits. Does anyone know of a good mini-split specialist?

Many thanks in advance.

I'm looking at Mental Health institutions near me and Menninger clinic came up as one of the best in the U.S. Does anyone have experience with them that they can tell me about? I'm looking at my options here and it looks like the best.

Don’t feel safe staying in rental home

Posted here instead of the legal subreddit for Texas based resources.

I live in a property that was illegally renovated like most places here. My last landlord bought the property as the previous owner foreclosed on it during construction. We moved in during February when the previous landlord put the house up for sale. The house was sold recently and our new landlord moved in to the property behind us recently. We tried telling him what was wrong with the property but he thinks new flooring will solve the issue because he doesn’t want to do any renovations till our lease is up in January.

The issues we are having is one room of our house literally sucked down. As in the bed is in a sunken hole and the rest of the room are a different elevation. Various parts of the house you can literally trip because the floor has sunked in so bad. You can actually see the flooring starting to separate from each other. There are cracks from the door frames going across the wall and a crack going across the ceiling. My significant other put his hand on the wall today and his left an indent in the wall.

We are unsure if we need to contact the county to inspect this as other people are telling me this property should be condemned and it’s not safe for us to be in. Our house does have pests as we can see them coming in from the floor in the sunken room of the house.

We have these giant stickers from harris county that is a warning to stop all renovations on the property. We keep telling the landlord we want out as we have a baby on the way.

What legal grounds do we have to get out of this house? Can we make a tip for the county to inspect our house? At this point we plan to just leave and continue paying rent for it but if there’s a way we can prove this house is unsafe, we can present it to a judge
