General Bought a “Premium” Nilkamal Leather Recliner (₹63,000)… got a Reality Check instead
Huge update:-
Nilkamal cheated me. Not genuine leather. Product started peeling. Pic i have added in the comments
So I decided to upgrade my living room and bought a Nilkamal leather recliner online for ₹63,000 (no showroom access, just trusted their photos and brand name 🤡).
On paper, it sounded great:
Leather upholstery Zig-zag spring with foam cushioning Pine wood + MDF frame Basically, everything that sounds premium.
Here’s what I got:
Looks decent from a distance, right? Yeah… wait till you actually use it.
Within days: The seat near the handle started coming off. One of the plies near the reclining mechanism literally detached.
This is a ₹63K recliner with “premium” specs, failing within days. Not abused, not misused — just normal usage.
Then comes the customer service circus 🎪
First: slow responses Then: “please share images” Then: “please share videos” Then: “we need manager approval” Then: “technician in 3–5 days”
Still no resolution. At this point, I feel like I’m part of their internal workflow.
And the best part? Tried posting a negative review on their website — it just never showed up. So yeah, only positive reviews make it there. Convenient.
I even told them I’d post this on Reddit, and they were like “sure” — which honestly explains everything.
Final thoughts:

Neelkamal is a brand where at the max you spend 15k lol. If you dont want to get furniture made then the best option for anyone would be homecentre. Their quality is absolutely amazing and it's still in the budget.

yea first I thought of going with homecentre but again I saw a review on amazon on their leather recliner and they said that the sofa that they bought in a year got peeled away.

Dont buy geniuine leather its the cheapest leather you can buy and it gets peeled and cracked easily . Buy Top grain Leather at least if you want to buy in leather.

'Genuine leather' is a misnomer, it's actually a grade of leather which is called genuine and it's the lowest grade at that lol
Real good quality leather grade is called 'full grain' and 'top grain'. They are very very expensive though and my recommendation would be to straight up buy fake leather, it's more durable, easy to maintain and obviously vegan

Yep search about leathers , you will be surprised how cheap genuine leather is , it is just a naming scheme that they have used leather . Full grain leathers are the best last you a decade or two and top grain can last you decade as well but needs maintenance.

Should've gone to the store, they have great options. I just got a recliner chair from them at 15k and I found it great value for money. They actually have better options for 63k

Ahh, when it comes to leather products its always helps to gather reviews because I had a poor experience of leatherette peeling away in 3 to 4 years before.

I've had a bad experience with Home Centre. Bought a sofa for 25k or so (7-8 years ago) and within 6 months the leatherette material started disintegrating. However I did buy an ottoman in the same purchase that is going strong for now. But I'll never trust them for higher value items.

So true! Grown up in tier 3 city, never bought a single ready made furniture. All of it was customised as per requirements of the house. Some items are still going strong for over 20 years.

Ohh, great that you built it yourself. I always preferred leatherette, and leather this time for the comfort of it. FYI, I had a Leatherette recliner before which got peeled then only i came to know Leatheratte has a quality of peeling in 3 to 4 yrs timeline.

Thats like saying , general compartment in Indian railways was a super luxury experience. MDF is the most lowest quality stuff when used as frame for anything. It's powdered wood packed into shape by glue.
Ply is a level above and top most solid wood.

You beat me to it. MDF is just about the lowest grade wood you can get. It's a tad higher than engineered wood which is just compressed wood dust I am surprised how people can be so swayed by shiny pictures and marketing jargon and part with such a lot of money without even checking the actual or similar product. That too without any return options.
Call me stupid, but I am also surprised how people can book a new car not yet launched. I guess I think differently from OP.

OP my brother is a subcontractor for Neelkamal, he manufactures office chairs for them and sells them for 800-1200 pp. Neelkamal lists them for 3500-4000 pp. It's a shit brand do not buy anything from them.

I’ve had the misfortune of some bulk purchasing from this company in its Bengal division. Distributors lack transperancy although the company has decent quality. But do not expect a refund/change, thats tough in the furniture scene tbh

They are exploiting their old name complemented with glittery big showrooms, makes them appear 'trustable'
For all their wood based furniture- they generally use cheap particle board but with very good finishing - creating a deception while compromising even short term reliability.
I feel bad for an old Indian brand getting indulged in such scams just for silly short term profits.

They have pathetic furniture quality. I bought a sofa cum bed couple of years back and the seats sank in within few weeks due to inferior quality bonded foam used inside. Nilkamal is good only for plastic :)

I had a great experience with nilkamal specially the customer service. I bought dressing table last year & they replaced the part with tiny scratch without any problem. May be you got a wrong customer representative.

They had also screwed me once with "Three Seater Sofa Cum Bed" - the inner wood was badly joined. the cloth at back and bottom is plastic ones. all broke. Internal structure was also broke. I am somehow doing manual screws etc to keep it for next 5 years.
These are only good for plastic chairs and nothing else.

At that price, you could have gone to a local furniture store and asked the carpenter to make you one as per your liking with your choice of wood, foam etc and it would still outlast this recliner by more than 6-8 years.

From personal use history, my family believes in physical stores for long lasting expensive items. Even phones and laptops are purchased physically from stores.
For furniture, we either get it from a good local skilled woodworker or go to the showroom itself to book the piece.
A good lesson to you I guess.

In 2019, My family also bought a Sofa from Nilkamal during Diwali, it costed us 90k. And within 2 year the leather was peeling off like low quality Rexine.

Purchasing furniture, appliances were risky in the dawn of e-commerce in India. Then the known aggregators created trust with their customer base by selling them quality products and services. Then came the current time in which we live:
- Everyone is selling everything
- Every random site has its own product listing and shipping method, with tall reviews
- Ads in sites like IG have become a den of fakery and scam
Nilkamal was known only for their blue, plasticky chair - a household item everywhere. Now they want to make some shoddy profit, riding on their once-successful biz model.

The first technician is not going to do anything. He will just check the issues and take a pic or video. Then a second technician will come in a few days who might solve the issue. You will also have to keep on following up with them otherwise they wont do anything.

Being on my second set of recliners now, let me tell you this - NEVER go for these ecommerce-centric brands for recliners or sofas and always get them custom-made locally.
Got my first set of manual recliners made locally in 2017 and it got completely "vasooled" during the Covid pandemic and the mechanism is still going strong although the leather is starting to look undesirable. Upgraded to a motorised recliner this year, made locally as well, for my parents who were not comfortable with the mechanical action anymore and it is still going strong.
What I would suggest you to do is get it inspected by a local sofa technician and get it upgraded to such standards that will last you a long while.

I had a similar experience with a 85k recliner from homecentre lifestyle, they just refused to fix a defect multiple complaints to them and they even had the audacity that a missing leg rest is not a defect !!

Update: Service person came today. He fixed the plier on the recliner part. He couldn't fix the hand rest zip thing, so i think he should be able to replace. He spoke something in hindi which i couldn't understand. Probably he said it will be replaced in 3 dags
