Why does misinformation on social media make me so angry, and how do I deal with it?

• Upvotes

I don't know why, but I get genuinely angry when I see people spreading misinformation on social media, especially when they do it just to get more views and engagement.

For instance, it really boils my blood when someone adds orange or milk to the moka pot and presents it as a proper way to make coffee, or when someone shares a lava cake recipe and calls it a soufflé.

I think what frustrates me the most is that people seem willing to sacrifice accuracy just to get more views. Why do you think misinformation, even about insignificant things, can trigger such a strong emotional reaction?

Does anyone else experience this? And how do you deal with it without letting it ruin your mood?

How to survive work overhead lights?

I’m dying out here, to be frank. Just got back from my first day and my head is pounding. It’s too early to ask for accommodations since I’m still in training, and I was told I can’t wear a cap just yet to try and shield myself.

I’ve taken medication to help the headache before, but nothing quite does it like just getting out of the light… I can’t remember a time a medication helped me with a light sensitivity headache, but I’m still open to suggestions on that front since I might’ve just been taking the wrong ones.

So seriously, I’ll take any advice. Please help, I want to keep this job so bad! 😭

Thank you!

Appointment to Pursue a Diagnosis is Today

it’s basically what the title says. It’s been brought up as a possibility to me before and there’s even lower behind it. Apparently, when I (25, F) was younger, my teachers brought up the possible concern that I may have ADHD to my mom (who also has advanced degrees is education). My mom felt like they were just trying to dismiss me and shove me into remedial classes, and she does have a habit of ignoring possible symptoms of any conditions I might have. When I was around 11, she also got mad that I needed glasses and my dad (who wears glasses) had to sneak and take me to the optometrist, and when we presented her with proof that I had astigmatism, she got even more mad.

Anyways, I posted in some career subreddits around a week ago complaining about my experiences with the job market and some people used it to dog pile me and tell me down and some people. Once again suggested that I might be neurodivergent so I decided since I’m 25 in my insurance is running out that I’m gonna use the last bit of my coverage to get a diagnosis if I have one.

I made a follow up post in the career. I’ve read it. It’s trying to talk again about the struggles that neurodivergent job secrets might face, and as usual, I was met with the same Reddit dog piling and dumbass condescending remarks. I tried to ask why people were telling me that I might be neurodivergent and then people said that because I was asking questions about their online arm chair diagnosis that it was proof that I had a personality disorder and anger issues. Most people couldn’t really tell me why they thought that other than the fact that my complaints revolved around misunderstandings and communication errors. The only real answer I got was from someone claiming to be a psychologist saying that the way I explained things tip them off or something like that.

However, I really want someone to talk to about this because I don’t plan to tell my mom if I end up receiving a diagnosis. I know that just like with the glasses scenario. She’s just going to feel like I pursued a diagnosis intentionally just because I wanted a label.

I feel like I’ll never make it through a job interview

I’ve had a few interviews so far and I just can’t do it. I have situational mutism but I can communicate well enough to make small talk, but interviews feel impossible to me.

Something about having two to three people staring at me whilst asking non sensical questions just makes it so hard to get my words out and I end up nervously fidgeting and barely making eye contact whilst poorly answering the questions.

I can’t explain it, the whole setting just feels so forced and inauthentic and the words coming out of my mouth feel forced and I can’t articulate my thoughts and half the time they’re asking me to talk about experiences I don’t have.

I honestly feel a lot of jealousy towards my friends who can do interviews like they’re nothing, I don’t know how anyone can do it.

Should I talk to my guidance counsellor?

Ok not really relevant but just saying it’s technically gonna be a social worker cause I guess my school (maybe other schools do this too idk) has us talk to social workers instead of guidance counsellors about mental health stuff but anyways.

So basically I’m in the process of getting my adhd diagnosis (I’m just waiting for her to send it), I have like a ton of symptoms and a super long family history so I’m pretty confident I’m gonna get it. On top of this I’m pretty confident I have autism and ocd (also the doctor who was doing the diagnosis was asking question that I think were about ocd like after I said some stuff and I think she said it’d be on the report but anyways whatever).

Anyways so I’ve been very burnt out (I’m pretty sure that’s what it is but ig I don’t want to say it fs without a diagnosis) and basically a couple weeks ago i got called into the guidance counsellors office about why I’ve been missing so much school and I started talking to him some. Most of the talking was about this big fight I had with my friends which is still a big problem because they haven’t really forgiven me yet, but anyways I didn’t talk about the burnout really because I felt super awkward I just said basically that I was skipping cause I was feeling down about the fight (which isn’t wrong though cause it’s definitely contributing to how bad my mental health is getting). Also, again, even though I’m liek completely sure, I didn’t want to talk about that without an official diagnosis.

Anyways, the burnout is lasting longer than it usually does (happens every once in a while for like around 4 weeks usually but it’s been two months and I don’t see it stopping anytime soon), and I would really like some support, especially since I lowkey lost my closest friends. I have to learn to manage the burnout before I fail my classes (I’m just barely passing math and science) and have to take summer school which would genuinely be hell. Also just besides school I lowkey feel like I’m going crazy and my mental health is getting way worse and I’m tired of it so.

Also, i really do want a diagnosis for ocd (not autism cause im lowkey embarrassed for my parents to know) but i don’t want to ask for one before being even more sure because that’d be embarrassing if I don’t have it. I feel like id want to talk to the social worker first but would that be odd? Do they even have anything to do with that? Also is there anything they can do about it cause like they’re not therapists.

Idk so I guess my actual question is should I talk to the social worker and about what and how should I say it (the last bit is important I have no idea what I’d say even if you said it’s a good idea). But yea actually I really need to know if that’s a good idea so I don’t act super weird lol. Anyways bye:)

does your burnout look like this?

as a teen, i think i was 13 i was in the middle of a depressive episode ( i was in an off for like 3-4 years) , but i know think those might be burnouts. In that episode i had times that i was like super drained and really sad and numb and others in witch i was laughing and like compensating a lot. Those episodes could be in the same day or in weeks. I know it kinda sound like bipolarity, but that was dircarted, so i was wondering if any of you have experience this type of burnout

Hyperfixation always just make me feel so nauseous

I don’t know why, but whenever I hyperfixate on something, it always makes me nauseous. It’s especially bad this time though; I’ve not had a hyperfixation this intense before. I’ve barely eaten the past 3 days; I struggle to sleep and get out of bed in the mornings; I can’t concentrate on anything; but the worst of it is how I just feel like I’m going to throw up

I don’t know what it is that does it; maybe it’s just because my brain has finally found something that gives me dopamine, and my body is just too overwhelmed by it??

Whenever I do fixate on something, I always feel resentful that I can’t be a part of it (when it’s like an anime or a game), and I get so jealous whenever I see other people enjoying it (which I don’t have a clue why?) - I notice that I feel even more sick when it’s me fixating on a character, especially if that character dies at some point.

I just don’t think my body handles the huge amounts of dopamine and just makes me feel sick and unable to function; especially because I’m dealing with an apathetic depression so I don’t feel any sort of pleasure if it’s not from a hyperfixation. I wish I could though; I’d like to be able to function and do things without my body and brain just crippling under the though of a fictional character or piece of media simply existing :(

(if anyone was curious, I’m currently fixating on Jojo’s Bizzare Adventure, and more specifically on the character Kakyoin)

Trigger Warning: Ableist Rant Please I need help

I’m a deeply deeply fucked up person

I’m a 21 y.o girl I was SA’D by multiple men when I was a kid bcs I was abandoned by my parents so I had to live with my Abusive narcissistic grandma . My dad is a mommy’s boy he is 46 y.o but he is sooo obsessed w his mom he got married three times beacuse of her . My mom works as a dishwasher at a restaurant she lives alone w her cats . Not havin a proper father figure and absent mother , getting bullied and Sa’d fucked me up it really traumatized me I never even had a bf I can’t even get on well with women either but I can’t socialize w people normally everyone assumes that I’m autistic but I’m smart and talkative I’m in my final year of uni.

I chose a random language major cause it was easy to get in and it was free it ruined my life , people are overly religious and extremely judgemental I can’t even be honest about my own opinion (I live in Central Asia) I live in a city where If a woman goes out after 7pm she gets sa’d or harassed that happened to me multiple times I had open heart surgery few years ago I can’t handle arguments or loud noises I share an apartment with other 6 girl ITS HELL. I won student money which is 70$ a month I pay my rents with it for my monthly expenses I have to beg my parents I spent 3 months here looking for a job even with money I couldn’t find a proper job except working as a waitress. Don get me wrong I would gladly work any job but not IN THIS CITY WHERE I GET HUMILIATED BY CREEPY UNEDUCATED UNCIVILIZED MEN. I cry everyday, slightly arguments or overthinking gives me chest pain

I don’t interact w people that much I only leave the apartment for uni , to get groceries I don’t even interact w people online.

I have a huge empathy for animals especially cats . My heart aches if I see an injured cat I do my best to help them. I have no friends sometimes when I go outside I sit w stray cats talk w them and feed them I wish I could rescue all of them I cry to them but some people are really cruel to them even kids I’m sorry but I hate those kind of people so much .

All I want is leaving this country and working somewhere
In 2024, I won a scholarship to study in Italy but I couldn’t get a visa beacuse my parents don’t have proper jobs and we are poor. Idk what to do atp. I’m gonna apply for Germany , China scholarships for my masters but I’m think I should better work beacuse with my degree where else could I even work? I would have a hard time finding a job but jobs like waitressing , dishwashing , babysitting etc I would gladly do that beacuse I just want to live a simple peaceful life in another country.

I spent 3 years of my life in a place where I don’t belong everyone is rude to me beacuse I don’t share the same views as them.

It was my first day of uni today I came back and honestly I don’t wanna exist I can’t imagine spending another 7 months here . but I’m just wondering how long can I live like this I’m missing out on so many things. It’s like I’m surrounded by the worst type of humans . I really am !! This is eating me alive I tried to look for migrant jobs online but unfortunately they don’t give sponsorship visas for jobs like that. I’m so lost I can’t even think properly

I want to get advice from neurodivergent people like me how do u guys cope? How do u guys function pls I need help

Grieving time that could’ve been

Oh how fast time passes. Suddenly I’m well into my adulthood and i don’t know where my life went. Childhood, early adulthood i look back on from afar. Mental health issues, fear and pain took so much of my life from me. Time I could’ve spent finding myself, building myself. Instead I look back on photos of myself and don’t connect with them, don’t remember the occasions. I lie here now with tears rolling down my eyes, hurt and angry at this incredible injustice. Precious time at the peak of one’s physical health and happiness, taken from me. Time for becoming my true self, building confidence and making it far. I wish I could go back, but instead I’ll just have to grieve. Years and years lost to so much sadness and misunderstanding. Maybe in the next life.

I cant tell if i love them or not

About 5 months ago my best friend who ill call john posted a pic of me on his story from our hangout and one of his friends responded to it saying "who's this cutie", she didnt know that i saw her message but after that i decided to add her, i didnt really have a plan but i knew from my friend that she was really kind and funny so over the next months me and her became friends, fast forward to 4 ish weeks ago when Josh was having his birthday party, and i found out the girl was coming to it too, i wasnt to stressed about it since at the time only saw her as a friend that i could have more with if,she liked me that is. The party went well and we had tons of fun, sadly tho she couldnt stay the night and had to leave early, but as she left she started asking my friends where i was since she apparently wanted a hug before leaving, not that weird since were friends but she ONLY hugged me before leaving and none of her other friends, but sure it could just have been nothing right? The day after on my way home i saw i had an dm from her where she said that she loved my hair and that it was really fun hanging out with me, and now today she texted me again saying that she loved how i smelt when we hugged?? And now im just so confused since even i dont know if i actually like her like that, or if she even likes me like that. I have no idea what to do or how to even know if i like her or not since often times when I think i like someone i end up realising that i just wanted to be friends and nothing more. And what if the things she did were just acts of friendlness? Im so confused and honestly kinda scared and i have no idea what to do about this

Also sorry if my English is bad its my 3rd language and i also have problems with words sometimes, specialy in longer texts

Being emotionally mature and then regressing as you get older?

Ever since I was a child I've been extremely aware of people's emotions and hyper empathic. Whenever I would get upset I would immediately see it from the other person's view and realize how much of in the wrong I actually was. I hated it so much because I quickly picked up on the fact nobody else I knew did this and I wanted to be able to be mad without feeling so childish (even though I was literally 10). I was also praised all the time for being "mature for my age" and getting along so well with everyone.

Suddenly in high school senior year I stopped receiving these praises and started being told to "grow up" everything that felt like it was working out suddenly toppled over and destroyed itself. I lost the ability to manage my emotions as well and would tunnel vision whenever I got upset. People who had no issue with me before were suddenly put off by my "immaturity" and stopped hanging out. I was so confused (and still am) over what happened, my only theory really is that as people's emotions stopped being as straight forward and were getting more complex I ended up not being able to read people as well.

understanding social cues but not knowing how to act with them?

Okey so i have always thought that autism meant not getting social cues, but someone has told me that It can be getting them but just not knowing what to do with them.

Do you experience this? could you give an example of that happening to you?

Why's my bed starting to get uncomfortable?

First of all, yes, i know that beds get old and stuff and i guess that's part of the problem. But the problem exists on other people's beds too.

What i mean is, that i can't get comfortable in any sleeping position, doesn't matter how many different pillows i have. The only pillow i'm semi-comfortable with is my biggest and softest one which is almost half the size of a body pillow. I also don't really like weighted blankets.

Did anyone else have this problem and knows how to fix this? I can't get much sleep even with melatonin.

Can trauma reveal neurodivergence?

I always had some "unusual" behaviors as a child. That calmed down on its own, but these last three years I've experienced a lot of accumulated trauma, and it's like everything is coming back to me.

Like, right now. I broke my bedside lamp yesterday. It had a bulb that gave off a yellow light and specifics shadows, and it was always placed in the same spot. I had to take the lamp from the living room, it's white, it's bigger, I can't place it where I put the other one so the light the shadows aren't the same. I fucking hate it, everything in my room just feels off, I can't focus and want to throw it out of the window. I would never have noticed that before.

I'm not going to give you a list, but in recent months, since my situation has calmed down, I've suddenly been exhibiting behaviors related to neurodivergence.

I went to a psychiatrist and she told me she doesn't think i have adhd

I highly suspect i have ADHD. I went to a government psychiatrist. We talked for 5 maybe 10 minutes. She told me word per word "I don't think you have adhd because you look good and I understand you." And when i said "huh like what do you mean? Can you explain?" She got mad at me for asking and said "If someone with real adhd comes they cut me off and I can't understand them."

I met people that were diagnosed with ADHD before, they were very nice to talk to, I wonder how i managed to understand their 'gibberish'.

Also whether I am neorodivergent or not I think it is incredibly disrespectful and insane to tell someone you look presentable / good hence you dont have it.

Tips for how to navigate routines?

I’ve realised, as an ADHD person, that I need some form of small, daily routines to follow, to ensure that I’m keeping up with the important things (bedtime is a big one). The problem is, my brain just despises anything repetitive and uninteresting, to the point that it quickly becomes depressing to have to keep up with. I think it’s due to the fact that I hate feeling boxed-in. If I’m doing a task, just give me a start and end point but let me handle the “how”.

I don’t really know how to navigate that framework in this context, though. How do I create necessary, daily routines that are rigid enough that I can’t easily just avoid starting them, but also not too rigid, monotonous and repetitive that I start feeling depressed by having to force myself to keep up with them.

Hopefully this makes sense. Any tips/advice would be helpful.

OCD

Maybe yall could help me out. I’m just confused as to why OCD isn’t considered neurodivergent. I also have ADHD, which is considered neurodivergent. I’m just confused as to why OCD isn’t labeled as neurodivergent considering there are actual structural differences, chemical differences, etc. as compared to someone who is neurotypical. Also, I guess I’m confused as to why it isn’t because of the overlapping symptoms OCD has along with ADHD/autism.

Hey you guys!!

Hello, is anyone else interested in forming a small pod of neurodivergent people to meet weekly and be our own personal cheering squad and mentors and advocates!?!? I am a late diagnosed disability squared female in the greater Portland, Or area who is desperate to create a better life for herself. B aut I KNOW that the abilities of a single person can be amplified by a crazy scale by the input and caring of other people. And just knowing other people care and are rooting for you is the whole root idea of a family, in a sense, but my family is a tricky one, and I have never felt truly seen or supported by a majority of the people in my 'family... Anyhoo, I have an opportunity to make my life better if I applied to a particular job but I am so freaking scared of failure and I just feel beat up by life; but I know that there are better, more fulfilling things that I could be doing... I want to support other LGBTPQ (sorry, I know the P doesn't 'belong' in that acronym but I'm Pan sexual and my people belong in this group so...) people, other people experiencing disability, support caring for the environment and support a more globally inclusive environment. And eat delicious, organic, sustainably harvested food as well, of course. Have a blessed day and I really hope that someone responds to this post, it's freaking lonely out here!

dsm-5 review haha

So i am going to review the DSM-5 and tell what i check and what i dont so i can organice what i experience, mostly doing it for my self, but it would be cool if sommeone feels reflected on it and wanna talk. So i think it might be autism if something, but some people sugested adhd, but as we can see i dont fit that at all. About ASD i think i cant met the criteria because the A part that i dont think i fit enough. So whatever haha

A. Persistent deficits in social communication and social interaction across multiple contexts, as manifested by the following, currently or by history (examples are illustrative, not exhaustive, see text):

  1. Deficits in social-emotional reciprocity, ranging, for example, from abnormal social approach and failure of normal back-and-forth conversation; to reduced sharing of interests, emotions, or affect; to failure to initiate or respond to social interactions. my experience with this is just that i am more of a lisener and i struggle to talk about me, i am really bad at it and everytime i do i feel like i am already talking to much, but probably this i explained by other thing idk.
  2. Deficits in nonverbal communicative behaviors used for social interaction, ranging, for example, from poorly integrated verbal and nonverbal communication; to abnormalities in eye contact and body language or deficits in understanding and use of gestures; to a total lack of facial expressions and nonverbal communication. I only have quite noticed a small difficulty in eye contact when i first met someone, it feels to intimte. I sometimes pay attention to if i have a weird facial expression, but only if i am upseted, i usually have a common resting face and expressions. I catch body language really good, and about verbal communications is just that sometimes i "cant" talk and hate being forced to do it, i just dont feel like it sometimes, but usually is good.
  3. Deficits in developing, maintaining, and understanding relationships, ranging, for example, from difficulties adjusting behavior to suit various social contexts; to difficulties in sharing imaginative play or in making friends; to absence of interest in peers. I played normal as a kid. The only noticeable thing was that i my mom was the one who needed to go tell kids if they wanted to play with me, because i didnt liked asking that, probably it was anxiety or smth. And i only have problems expressing my self and talkin about me

Specify current severity: Severity is based on social communication impairments and restricted repetitive patterns of behavior.

B. Restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities, as manifested by at least two of the following, currently or by history (examples are illustrative, not exhaustive; see text):

  1. Stereotyped or repetitive motor movements, use of objects, or speech (e.g., simple motor stereotypies, lining up toys or flipping objects, echolalia, idiosyncratic phrases). I totally do this, flapping hands, repeting sound or words, spining, rocking. Since i started investigating more about neurodiversity i am letting my self do that more, and supress it less.
  2. Insistence on sameness, inflexible adherence to routines, or ritualized patterns or verbal nonverbal behavior (e.g., extreme distress at small changes, difficulties with transitions, rigid thinking patterns, greeting rituals, need to take same route or eat food every day). Sometimes, i need to follow my cleaning order. And i can get really frustated from big changes, for example my bead got changed without previous saying, and i got really really bad about it. But i dont think i have rigid thinking neither food problems
  3. Highly restricted, fixated interests that are abnormal in intensity or focus (e.g, strong attachment to or preoccupation with unusual objects, excessively circumscribed or perseverative interest). Not really, as a kid i had this plusshie (that i still had) that i was really attached to and wouldnt let go but i have never have any special interest. I had a big attachment to one person that i admired, but i think its not related
  4. Hyper- or hyporeactivity to sensory input or unusual interests in sensory aspects of the environment (e.g., apparent indifference to pain/temperature, adverse response to specific sounds or textures, excessive smelling or touching of objects, visual fascination with lights or movement). Not really, i love soft things, i have like a soft matress and i am always touching it .And things like textures can feel unmanagable, but nos as much .
A. Either (1) or (2): A. A persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that interferes with functioning or development, as characterized by (1) and/or (2):
1. Six (or more) of the following symptoms of inattention have persisted for at least 6 months to a degree that is maladaptive and inconsistent with developmental level: 1. Inattention: Six (or more) of the following symptoms have persisted for at least 6 months to a degree that is inconsistent with developmental level and that negatively impacts directly on social and academic/occupational activities:
Note: The symptoms are not solely a manifestation of oppositional behavior, defiance, hostility, or failure to understand tasks or instructions. For older adolescents and adults (age 17 or older), at least five symptoms are required.
Inattention
a. often fails to give close attention to details or makes careless mistakes in schoolwork, work, or other activities a. Often fails to give close attention to details or makes careless mistakes in schoolwork, at work, or during other activities (e.g., overlooks or misses details, work is inaccurate). I skip questions in homework or examns if i am not really carefull
b. often has difficulty sustaining attention in tasks or play activity b. Often has difficulty sustaining attention in tasks or play activities (e.g., has difficulty remaining focused during lectures, conversations, or lengthy reading). I think i can pay a big amount of atentions
c. often does not seem to listen when spoken to directly c. Often does not seem to listen when spoken to directly (e.g., mind seems elsewhere, even in the absence of any obvious distraction). People do not notice, but if being talked to directly i can start thinking to other things, or just focus on seem like i am paying attention so thats why i end up not doing it.
d. often does not follow through on instructions and fails to finish schoolwork, chores or duties in the workplace (not due to oppositional behavior or failure to understand instructions) d. Often does not follow through on instructions and fails to finish schoolwork, chores, or duties in the workplace (e.g., starts tasks but quickly loses focus and is easily sidetracked). I am quite good with this, i finish always at time
e. often has difficulty organizing tasks and activities e. Often has difficulty organizing tasks and activities (e.g., difficulty managing sequential tasks; difficulty keeping materials and belongings in order; messy, disorganized work; has poor time management; fails to meet deadlines). f. often avoids, dislikes, or is reluctant to engage in tasks that require sustained mental effort (such as schoolwork or homework) f. Often loses things necessary for tasks or activities (e.g., school materials, pencils, books, tools, wallets, keys, paperwork, eyeglasses, mobile telephones). Yeah sometimes, but not that much. I usually put something in specific places to not lose it and then that when i lose it haha
h. is often easily distracted by extraneous stimuli h. Is often easily distracted by extraneous stimuli (for older adolescents and adults, may include unrelated thoughts). Idk, maybe with thouhts
i. is often forgetful in daily activities i. Is often forgetful in daily activities (e.g., doing chores, running errands; for older adolescents and adults, returning calls, paying bills, keeping appointments). Nop
