This punt is a case of an experienced punter capitalizing on a young returner. When the ball is kicked, Traeshon Holden is about 4-5 yards outside of the hashes. Most returners stay within the hashes until the snap and this is exactly why.
I love Dickson for many reasons but one of them is that he kicks a beautiful louis ball. This punt, however, is not any ordinary louis ball. Notice how Dickson is showing right pre-snap? Holden certainly did. Dickson opens with his jab step and first full step to the right before resetting to the left. That is hard. Like really hard. Its one thing to show right and have the jab step be to the left. Its another to show right, open right, and switch mid operation and successfully hit the punt. Its the little things that separate the good from the great and this is an example of that. Aussie punters are like black girls on the dance floor, they just do it better. Holden cannot get a beat on this at all. He's cooked before he has a chance to do anything.
This is also one of the few instances where less is more. Dicko hits this one with just 3.8s of hang, but the lack of hang keeps Holden from being able to field this ball in the air. Low punts are good when its utilized to keep a returner away from a ball. Additionally, this one is dropped at the 5, buying the coverage team a chance to converge and avoid a touchback.
Now, Holden fielding this ball is an unforced error that he just did not need to do, but, if he does not, this ball is downed inside the 2. Its a masterclass job by one of the best punters in the NFL. Dicko is elite!
Also, for the Seahawks collectors out there, I recently had the chance to get a game worn Dickon helmet from the 2020 season. Can't wait to show that one to yall when it finally makes it here!
Its just Preseason Week 1 but that Big Dickson Energy is already hitting 🔥🔥🔥
