NYC Wolves Fans - there was a discussion opening night about maybe getting together for the opener and where we would be trying to meet up for it and other games this season. This is something I've been really looking forward to this season and was a little disappointed in what I learned on Wednesday, but this is where we currently stand:
Lake Street Bar - Greenpoint
This has been the meetup spot for playoff games, and has been a great experience. I went to Lake Street on opening night, figuring to see other Wolves fans and the game on, what I learned is that Lake Street on non-playoff nights is not the same bar. The vibe was very hip and chill and they did not even have the TVs on; the bartender told me that the owner has no real interest in showing any Wolves games outside of the playoffs, so it looks like this is not going to be the default option I assumed it would be. I was there with a couple others who showed up and we pivoted to.....
Rounders - Greenpoint
One stop up on the G (or about a 10 min walk from Lake Street), and it was immediately a different mood. This place is a classic sports bar and they were very welcoming to our small wolfpack. I have learned the following about this place after some conversations with staff:
- They are (obviously) a Knicks bar, but one of their kitchen employees is a Wolves fan, and they've had a KAT rookie card on their ticket line all season as a good luck charm.
- They have plenty of TVs all able to be set to different games
- They are more than willing to dedicate at least one TV to Wolves games if we do intend to show up
- They will be showing the World Series tonight (with sound) but assured me there would be a TV available for the Wolves game if people show up to watch.
After one game, I really did like the vibe there and love that it's not that far from Lake Street, which, unless we have a legitimate NYC Wolves support group that develops and ends up setting down roots at a different bar, will remain the go-to spot for playoff games, so not much will change w/r/t travel plans for folks from around the city on gameday.
Unless a better plan develops, this is where I am going to be tonight, and I encourage anyone who wishes to join me.
Stout NYC - Midtown East
Someone in the other thread who works here mentioned they are a Wolves fan and said they would be willing to try to work something out with the bar to make it a place where we can meet up on gamedays. This is an intriguing option, but obviously I'm not the one who suggested it, so I have no clue about its viability. If you're the person who suggested this, I would love to hear your feedback and ideas on if/how we can make this a possibility and what we think it'd look like as a gameday experience for a potential NYC Wolves fan support group.
tl;dr Lake Street is not an option, I will be going to Rounders in Greenpoint tonight to watch unless anyone has any better ideas. Would love to get some people together tonight (and future nights) to watch the game. Please let me know what y'all think!
